Moments

You know how, every once in a while, you have a brief moment of clarity? I had one on my run this morning. I went to my favorite trail to run 10 miles, and I listened to this episode of the Choose Strong podcast, where Sally recaps her Badwater 135 race. Close to the end she said something like “I know it sounds cliche, but it’s not all about the outcome. Make sure you appreciate the moments along the journey.” I looked around me and realized… THIS. This is a moment along my journey. It felt so poignant that I stopped to take a picture. It’s not like it was a perfect moment- I was tired, it was hot, and my back was achy. And it wasn’t like I had any revelations or breakthroughs- “Oh, THIS is the race I should choose next” or “NOW I know what to do with the rest of my life.” Nope! I just understood that this imperfect moment was my life, and worthy of my full attention. Looking back through the years, I have a lot of moments that stand out to me like that, and they usually occur during long runs. Maybe it’s because I’m out in nature, maybe it’s because the thinking part of my brain is exhausted, or maybe it’s the endorphins. I finished the run, and came back home. You know how some people are real go-getters, and like to be active all day long? I’m not one of them. I ate my breakfast, and am now lounging happily with my cat. I’m wearing my favorite hoodie… After I finish this post, I’ll read a little and then take a nap. Oooh… life is good.
