walkers walk… but runners fly

Stomach Virus of 2023 Recap

Ha!  This post was supposed to be a race recap, but we all know how that turned out.  Instead I’ll share some thoughts on the recent situation here.  The main takeaway is, as always, you just have to take the good with the bad.

On Thursday night, while I was lying in bed feeling queasy but not actually sick yet, I kept thinking “But I have to get up at 5:45!  I have to run!  I can’t stay home from work tomorrow- I’m fully booked with clients!”  It was causing me so much stress that when I finally got sick, it was a relief to realize that none of those things would even be physically possible.  In spite of the discomfort of being ill, there was a certain pleasure in that moment where I knew I had to let it all go.

My daughter had started throwing up right before bedtime, and Friday was the first day she’s ever stayed home sick from middle school.  I know.  How is that even possible???.  She had a 100% perfect attendance record for 6th grade and 7th grade, and then so far in 8th grade she had a few excused absences for things like All-State and All-County band rehearsals, but had never called out sick.  I guess a stomach virus is the one thing you can’t fight off.

If my daughter and I both had to be sick, I’m glad it was at the same time.  Even though she’s 14 and can stay home alone, a stomach virus is a whole different experience.  I felt like she needed me to make the toast and tea, and remind her to sip her water slowly.  ALSO…

It seems like this should be obvious to everyone, but somehow isn’t to kids- there are good places to throw up and bad places.  A good place would be the bucket next to your bed, or the toilet.  An example of a bad place would be the bathroom SINK.  Sigh.  Kids need a little extra guidance sometimes.

In other news, now I know what the cats do all day when we’re gone… ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.  No wonder they’re getting so chubby!  On Friday, I lay on the couch all day and my snuggly calico slept between my legs.  Our other cat, who’s a little more aloof, slept on the other end of the couch.  I was touched that she wanted to be near us (but not too near, of course.)

Such a good snuggler!

Since I really couldn’t do anything else, I read two books!

I thoroughly enjoyed both of these, although they were vastly different from one another.  Central Places was a beautifully-written book that made me re-live my own childhood and high school years.  Although I wouldn’t presume to say I know what it feels like to be the only Asian American in a small town in Illinois, I think most of us can relate to family struggles while growing up, and the feeling of being an outsider.  And although I didn’t live in a small town, Illinois is my home state, and I always have a soft spot for books set in the Midwest.  Without giving anything away, I also loved how in the end, Audrey focused on the truly important relationships in her life.

The Paris Apartment was just fun to read.  It was easy, it was interesting, and kept me happily occupied.

We’re feeling better now and happy to get back to our regular lives!  That’s the other thing I always realize when I’m sick- it’s kind of nice to have a break every once in a while, but my regular life is pretty good.

Have you read either of those books?

What do you do when you’re sick?

Weekly Rundown- Back At It

Happy official first day of fall!  Of course, the weather is not fall-ish here, but we will not speak of such things.  We WILL speak about my calf though- it’s still feeling good, and I went from running every third day to every other day.  Progress!  I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown.  Here’s how it all played out… Monday The last time I ran was Saturday, so this was my first every-other-day run since coming back from the calf injury.  Everything is feeling good, but I’m still nervous about it, so I was very conservative- I walked one mile and ran two. I followed the run with a Caroline Girvan standing core workout.  I’ve decided that I like standing core workouts, if they use dumbbells.  You don’t get the same burn as with deadbugs or crunches, but I like the way I have to stabilize my core against the weighted arm moves. Tuesday Strength day at home- hip stability (including Runner’s Touch and the one leg sit-to-stand.)  I also got out my pull-up bar and did dead hangs and scapular retractions (you hang from the bar and lift yourself up a few inches without bending your arms, only by retracting your shoulder blades.) Boy, are my lats weak.  I rounded it all off with the tried-and-true Caroline Girvan deadbug workout.. Wednesday This was a big day- I got back to the cross country trail!  I haven’t been here since the end of May. I walked a mile and then ran 4.  I loved being back and I LOVED running in the daylight! Thursday Upper body strength workout from Sally McRae’s app, and then this MadFit standing abs workout.  This is officially my favorite standing core workout (thank you, Engie!) I feel it in my core, there’s some balance involved, and it’s a good upper body workout as well. Friday Third run of the week! Once again I was super conservative- walked one mile and then ran one. Followed this up with hip stability exercises and squats. At night I went to our high school football game! Our team is undefeated this year, and we won 48-0.  I actually felt a little sorry for the other team.  The band had to play their halftime show on the track because the field was so wet, but it was still a fun night! Saturday Off!  Friday was a late night, so it felt good to sleep in a little before going to work. Sunday Ooh, I’m excited.  On tap for today- a trail run!  I’m going to my second favorite trail- my first favorite has a lot of sand and I don’t think my calf is quite ready for that yet- and I’ll do 6 miles (the first mile will be walking though.) As you can see, it was a great week!  The only thing that marred it a little was my low back, which has been very achy.  It doesn’t hurt when I run (so it’s not a “real” problem, ha) but I babied it a little and didn’t go to the gym for any heavy squats or deadlifts.  Hopefully I’ll get that back on track this week. How was your week?  Are you celebrating the first day of fall?

Friday Coffee Date

Hello friends!  We made it to Friday and GUESS WHAT.  Sunday is officially the first day of fall!  Pour yourself a delicious fall-themed beverage and let’s talk about what that means. This week, Elisabeth posted her Top Five/Bottom Five Fall lists.  In her Top Five was the delightful fall weather, and in her Bottom Five was “winter is coming.”  Well, in Florida that is reversed. One of the WORST things about fall is our weather.  September is absolutely terrible.  Hot, steamy, rainy, and the chance of hurricanes increases every day.  Now that my kids are older, it doesn’t bother me as much.  But when they were young, there were all sorts of outdoor activities we thought we should be doing… like the PUMPKIN PATCH. The “pumpkin patch” was actually the yard of a nearby church that had hundreds of pumpkins- obviously no pumpkins actually grew there- they were imported from another state.  It seemed like a fun thing to do, but the weather just wasn’t conducive.  One year stands out starkly. The day we planned to go to the pumpkin patch, it rained.  But then the rained stopped- oh, good!  Let’s go to the pumpkin patch!  The problem is, when it rains here in September, it just makes things unbearably steamy.  Our time at the pumpkin patch was muggy, muddy, and horribly uncomfortable. (They don’t have that pumpkin patch anymore- I WONDER WHY.) Okay, so we don’t have fall weather here.  But you’re probably thinking that I’m guzzling down all the fancy fall drinks, right? No pumpkin spice lattes for me!  Starbucks does have some vegan seasonal drinks, but they all have a ton of sugar.  This year I’ve been having some serious FOMO, so I’ve tried a couple things… This is a vegan, unsweetened creamer, and I’ve been putting it in my tea (NOT in my Earl Grey- that would be gross.  Just regular black tea.) I think I like it?  I can’t really decide, but it does make me feel festive and fall-ish. Some friends gave us another new (to me) beverage: It’s sugar free!  The ingredients are black tea, chai spices, and sucralose.  Okay, I know sucralose isn’t good for you.  I know!  But I’m more willing to have sucralose every once in a while than sugar.  I’ve only tried it once- I mixed it with soy milk and made a DELICIOUS chai latte.  My daughter went a step further and added the pumpkin creamer to hers and made a super fancy fall beverage. Let’s go back to Elisabeth’s Bottom Five Fall item: winter is coming.  YES.  Winter is coming!  In Florida that means a break from the heat and humidity.  We’ll get some cool nights and beautiful days.  It won’t happen until November/December, but we’re here, waiting patiently. What would you tell me over coffee?  Do you like festive fall beverages?  Are you excited for the first day of fall?

Reading and Eating

I’ve started Edge of Eternity and we are now in the 1960s!  It’s amazing to me how much I actually don’t know.  Yes- I did know there was a wall in Berlin.  But if you asked me when it was built, I would have said… right after WWII?  No!  It was built in 1961, after the US and USSR threatened war over the Berlin crisis.  This was going on during the Civil Rights protests in the US.  What an incredibly turbulent time!  Needless to say, I’m loving this book. This is the third book in Ken Follett’s Century Trilogy, and in between books 2 and 3 I quickly read this: This was a reread, as all Agatha Christies are for me.  I found it at the used bookstore, flipped through it and didn’t recognize any of the character’s names.  I took that as a good sign, and decided to risk it.  So many times I start an Agatha Christie (I read them all at least thirty years ago) and remember the ending about halfway through. Not this time!  I KNOW I read this one, but I truly couldn’t remember it.  I even tried out different “ingenious” solutions: “The narrator is the murderer!  The priest isn’t really a priest!  Someone is a long-lost son!”  Nope.  The ending was a complete surprise.  I really enjoyed this reread! Eating wise… I’ve continued to pretend that it’s not hot, muggy, and steamy here, and made chili!  I while ago I made Vegan Cincinnati Chili from this website. I was planning to make that again, but when I went to the website, I noticed he also has a recipe for “Texas Chili” which is called Best Damn Vegan Chili Ever.  Well!  I had to try that. It was very good!  I’m not sure I believe the claims that this chili is “award winning.”.  But to be fair, I did leave out two “optional” ingredients, pickled jalapenos and masa harina.  Mayne next time I’ll put those in and see if it wins any awards. I will say that my husband LOVED it!  We ate it for two dinners, and both times he exclaimed over how much he enjoyed it. Chili: Cincinatti, or Texas style? What are you reading now?

Fall Fun

I had a really nice, fall-ish weekend!  When I say “fall-ish,” I don’t mean I visited a pumpkin patch or went apple picking.  No, we don’t have that in Florida- although, I’m pretty sure it’s too early for those things just about everywhere right now.  But those are things that never happen in Florida, so we have to make our own fall. We may not have cool temperatures and falling leaves, but we do have football and homecoming!  Saturday night was our high school homecoming dance, and my daughter went with two of her friends, looking amazing in her new dress.  I got a lot of GREAT comments on my post about the suit vs. dress dilemma, including one from Julie saying that she wore a tux to her prom!  For this dance, my daughter wore a dress- who knows what will happen in the future. I dropped my daughter and her two friends at the dance, and I loved seeing all the kids dressed up.  I also loved that these three girls didn’t feel like they needed dates- they were happy to be going together.  I was excited that it was my daughter’s first high school dance. I was also excited that after the dance, another mom was picking the girls up and bringing them back to her house for a sleepover.  I knew that my daughter would be in good hands and I knew she would have fun- and my job was done for the night. I got home just in time for the start of the Baylor game.  It was gloomy and rainy outside (a typical South Florida evening in September) and my house was so cozy!  We broke out the fall food and beverages. We tried each of the beers: the Oktoberfest was very good; the Pumpking Ale was okay, and the Howling Gourds was terrible.  The only one we actually finished was the Oktoberfest.  It turns out some things just shouldn’t taste like pumpkin, and beer is one of them.  But it was fun to try them all. I LOVE chips and salsa, but don’t normally eat them.  It’s one of those thing I can’t stop eating once I start, so I usually don’t let myself start.  But I made an exception since they were “fall-themed” (holiday foods don’t really count, right???) and I loved them.  The pepita salsa is delicious, and chips are always good.  Plus they looked like fall leaves! We also had this: It was good.  I mean- it was good for a prepared dinner.  Elaborate cooking wasn’t in my plan for this night, so we definitely enjoyed these “heat and serve” enchiladas. We watched Baylor win, and oh yes- I was wearing my new favorite pajamas. After the game, I stayed up late reading, and finally crawled into bed, knowing that there was no work or school tomorrow, and no one would be needing me for anything.  I could sleep as late as I wanted, and didn’t wake up until 9 am.  It felt AMAZING. After a nice slow start to the morning, Sunday got underway.  I picked up my daughter, did the grocery shopping, and started thinking about plans for the week.  I felt a little melancholy that the weekend was coming to an end.  Sometimes everything just comes together perfectly.  I know there will be more fun times this fall, but it’s possible that I’ll look back and say “Yes, that was the best night of the whole season.” Are you starting to think about fall, or are you still in a summer frame of mind? Pumpkin ale- yay, or nay?

  1. Ah life lessons! Better to learn that the sink isn’t a good place to throw up when you’re in middle school as opposed to later in life. And we can all use a reminder not to take anything too seriously since it can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.

I’m glad that you got the lemonade out of this lemon and had your cat nurses on hand to take care of you. I’m hearing that the stomach virus is a thing so a lot of people are getting a “bathroom vacation” right now.

    1. Oh boy- “bathroom vacation,” I love it! Yes apparently this is going around. What I’m wondering is, can you be immune to a stomach virus??? I better not get this again!!!

  2. Well, better the sink than EVEN WORSE places… like the dinner table!
A relative of mine had such a mishap. I’ll spare you the details, it’s too gross. My niece and nephew are still traumatized by it, 20 years later.
So glad you’re feeling better now. Now that you got that virus behind you, you can focus on the big race ahead!

  3. I read the Paris apartment and liked it. I’m reading Trust now.

    Glad you’re feeling better.

I’m still in a state of depression but hopefully it will heal quickly and I can run one of those 6 paid for races

  4. My son was telling me about one of his friends who recently got really drunk and then threw up in his own bed. Thankfully we have not had that experience in this house. I very much recall when the kids were little and they were able to make it to the bathroom when they had to throw up, and what a glorious day that was. This was followed in glory by the day they could buckle their own car seats properly.
    Hope you’re feeling better!

    1. Amen to the buckling of car seats. My son never learned how to work the 5-point harness and I was mostly grateful for this, so I could make sure it was secured properly. But the day I stopped having to buckle him in to a booster…MAGIC!!

    2. Thank you Nicole- we’re feeling much better. That is a very gross and horrible story!!! Let’s hope that young man learned a lesson (and that he’s not living at home where his mom has to wash the sheets???)

  5. Ugh – so sorry to hear that both you and your daughter were sick. I saw on the news over the weekend that the norovirus is spreading like crazy all over the country. It’s so contagious!

    1. Oh wow. I bet that’s what we had. And I have heard that a lot of people have been getting sick. This explains everything!

  6. I’ve said this before, but my kids seem to vomit with almost every bug. Our financial advisor (we’ve been working with her for over a decade) told me once many years ago that her son had only ever thrown up ONCE his entire life. We saw her a few weeks ago and I brought this fact up and she confirmed her son – now almost 18 – has only thrown up once in his life?! I cannot even imagine. So the fact your daughter has never had a sick day in middle school astounds me. This is wonderful news, and I’m so very sorry her streak had to end (and that you caught the same horrible bug). Ugh. I’m still so sorry Jenny.

I also 100% agree that as horrible as it is to be sick, it is nice to be sick enough to realize that everything has to get canceled. That in-between stage is one of much anxiety for me. Am I sick? Should I go? Is this in my head? Once vomit comes, I know to cancel EVERYTHING.

Recently my daughter felt a bit sick to her stomach. Nothing came of it, but she rushed to the kitchen sink and I absolutely panicked. NOT THERE! I yelled. Ugh. I just hate dealing with vomit. I mean…no one likes it I suppose. We have two buckets in a closet in the bathroom for just such a purpose because I also think that throwing up into a toilet is SO gross (but that’s what I always do because it’s a lot easier than cleaning out a bucket…but for the kids, we have he barf bucket. It’s so sad.

    1. It’s very weird how some kids throw up and some don’t. I had completely forgotten about this, but when my son was little he used to throw up with every illness, even a cold. Glad he outgrew that phase!

  7. Oh my stars, that point about GOOD places and BAD places hit home! Even with a bowl next to her bed and the toilet, my girl has hit the sink and the tub (ew). So glad you weren’t alone (those cats may not have moved a lot, but they stayed close!) and are on the mend!

    1. Thank you Lindsay! Glad to know my daughter is not the only one. Yes, it’s funny how much company the cats give even just lying around like lumps.

  8. Oh, I’m sorry you were sick. That sounds absolutely horrible and there’s nothing I hate worse than throwing up. But I love that your kitties gave you cuddles and that you were able to just sit around and read while you’re sick.

I am generally the kind of sick person who just wants to sleep it off. I have trouble concentrating on books when I feel ill and so I tend to do less reading than usual when I’m sick! I *might* actually turn on the television when I’m sick, which I normally do not do!

    1. I actually lay on the couch all day, alternating between sleeping and reading. Every time I woke up I would read a little, and then drift off back to sleep. It was kind of nice!

  9. At least you kept your sense of humor 😉 Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I was truly sick. I don’t count Covid because I wasn’t confined to the bed, nor did I feel “that sick” other than some body aches and chills the first day or so. And, I was able to work from home (though I did have some brain fog). I’m glad you’re both feeling better!

  10. Oh nooooo the bathroom sink! Ugh. But seriously, these are things that maybe you don’t know when you are 14, and also that you may not think to teach because it seems so obvious! (All the love to my poor mother, I once threw up in the shower. I was so hurt that she got annoyed at me, but now I get it. Oh, how I get it.)

I’m glad you were able to be home sick together, too. Stomach viruses make me want my mommy. And your cats were very kind to heal you with their snuggles.

Of those two books, I have only read The Paris Apartment and it wasn’t a hit for me. It was a quick read though, I’ll give it that. I’m really glad you were able to read some enjoyable books during your illness!

    1. Ha ha… I’m trying to decide which is worse, the sink or the shower.
About The Paris Apartment- if I were in a different mood I might not have enjoyed it. And I’m pretty sure I won’t remember much about it in a couple months. But for whatever reason, I enjoyed it right now.

  11. Sorry to hear you have been sick; I have actually seen a couple other people post about this, so I think that it is going around!

I read and enjoyed the Paris Apartment and all of her books that I have read so far. They are entertaining, a bit predicable sometimes, but fun! I have not read the other book and in fact, I just went and put it on hold at my library! I have 8 weeks to wait but will let you know what I think!

    1. Yes, there’s a stomach virus going around for sure.
I also read The Guest List, and enjoyed that. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of Central Places!

  12. Ugh, stomach bugs are so awful. Paul threw up early in the morning yesterday. I was still in Chicago so it made a rough week for Phil even rougher! Both kids were home w/ him Wed/Thur, he had to shovel/snow blow 17″ of snow, he tried to work, and then had a sick kid! Luckily he only threw up that 1 time and felt better by mid-day. But oof did that up the mom guilt on my end as I am definitely the caretaker in our family! And of course he threw up in his bed. Last time he threw up on his floor so I guess it was better to puke in bed?

I will have to read Central Places! I grew up in a rural setting and was very much an outcast since I was not athletic. So that book sounds relatable for me, but obviously not because of my race!

  13. Ugh, I am so sorry that you and your daughter got so sick. That sounds absolutely terrible, and especially to interfere with a race. Nooooo!

I feel like I don’t do anything but watch tv when I’m sick. It’s hard for me to focus on books when I feel crummy. The last time I was sick, I watched an entire season of Cheer and Master Chef, lol.

Lazy kitties! Haha. Getting a pet camera led me to realize my cats DO NOT MOVE FOR HOURS. Some days, I’m gone the entire day and they just sleep and sleep and sleep, not moving from their spot at all. Hahaha.
