Hello! Welcome once again as I join Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Rundown. It was a weird week with heat, rain, wind, and lots of sore muscles. Let’s just see how it all played out…
Sunday
Well, best long run ever!!! I was scared, because when I started it was 72 degrees with 93% humidity- and the temperature climbed steadily through this run. But I felt AWESOME. 18 AWESOME MILES! I’m not sure exactly what to attribute it to, but I will say a truck should be arriving any day now with my lifetime supply of Tailwind. I used the raspberry flavor on this run, which contains caffeine. I strongly suspect that it was the Tailwind that made me feel incredible. Yes, I know it’s a little hard to drink- you get sick of it. But it’s worth it.
Monday
I was sore today, but got out for a one mile walk and then 3 miles of running. Once I got started it wasn’t too bad.
Tuesday
Gym day! My legs were STILL sore, so I didn’t want to do squats or deadlifts. I started off pushing and pulling the sled:
… and then focused on upper body. I did bench press (which I’ve been neglecting lately) and overhead shoulder press with dumbbells. I followed everything up with some work on the ab machines.
Wednesday
Now my legs are feeling better, but my arms and chest are super sore from the bench press. 4 mile run…
…followed by dead bugs, where I could barely extend my arms above my head because they were so sore! Sigh.
This was also the day our “mini monsoon” started. It was windy and rainy all day, and into the next day. The county next to us actually canceled school, but luckily our schools stayed open. It felt like a mild version of a tropical storm- weird.
Thursday
Leg day at the gym! Sled pushes and pulls, squats, deadlifts…
And then I made my way over to the machines. My right knee has been troublesome lately. Nothing terrible- sometimes I’ll feel it when I’m walking, and then in the first couple steps of my runs I’ll feel a jolt of pain. I don’t feel it for the rest of the time I’m running, but I don’t like jolts of pain. I figured the muscles around the knee needed some extra attention, so I did the leg curl and leg extension machines. While I was there I admired this guy’s t-shirt:
Friday
Oof. Following the laws of working out, since I did something different at the gym, today I was super sore. 4 mile run with heavy, tired legs. Sheesh! I need a day off.
Saturday
Oh, guess what it is- a day off! I was able to sleep in a little before work. And then in the afternoon, my son arrived home from college!!! Hooray! Best day ever.
Sunday
On tap for today- 10 mile run. Now that my long runs are entering the “actual long” category, I’m not going to do them every single week. This week is a “short” long run. I’m excited to run without sore muscles screaming at me for a change.
How was your week? Are you ready for Thanksgiving?
Do you have extra time off this week? – I’ll have Wednesday and Thursday off, but have to work on Black Friday. My daughter is off of school all week so that feels like a little vacation to me!

I have to try run with caffeine, to see if it gives me xtra push.
I miss those double digits long runs… they will be back soon 🙂
sore legs after new gym tricks for sure… I’ve been with sore legs for two weeks since I took a break from gym. now finally feel normal
I think the caffeine definitely helped. If you want to try Tailwind you can order individual packets. I’m not sure about international shipping though.. I think you could get some.
Nice week of running and strength! I’m so glad your long run went so well. That had to feel good.
I’ve been sore a lot lately, but we’re in that powerlifting cycle, so it makes sense. It has made running harder tho! I’m glad I’m not training for anything right now.
Enjoy your week! I’m working Black Friday as well.
Thanks Wendy! Yes, sometimes being sore is inevitable. It does make it harder to run though.
Ooh, well done doing that long run! And everything else!
I’ve never heard of Thanksgiving decorations, what’s that? I always thought Americans basically started celebrating Christmas at Thanksgiving, sorry for my ignorance.
I had a great week feeling strong and able! Lots of balance and stability to work on, but everything has been good. Caffeine isn’t to be underrated! I sometimes take coffee before the gym for an extra energy kick.
I would say most people here skip right over any kind of Thanksgiving decorations and go right on to Christmas- that’s why I was surprised to see the decorations on this house!
I don’t want to overdo it with the caffeine but I agree it does help! I’m going to have some before my gym session this week with my son- I have a feeling it’s going to be grueling.
Wow, what a week Jenny! You really pushed yourself. Be sure to recover 🙂 What are you training for now?? 18 miles! So glad you had such a great run!
Thanks Jessie! I have a 50 mile race coming up in February : )
An, how nice to have the family back together! We are having a very low key Thanksgiving & I need that.
Congrats on a great feeling long run! You’re doing so well with your training — and not just the running.
Enjoy the fam & the days off this week!
Thank you Judy! It does feel good to have the whole family here. We had a really relaxing day and it felt great.
Nice job running and all the strength training! Your gym time always impresses me. Glad everyone is OK after your storm. Enjoy your time off Wed and Thurs!
Thank you Melissa! I hope you have a nice week with some extra days off as well.
Nice job on your runs… DOMS and you still run. Kudos to you.
I never do leg exercises… I should but I figure my running is for that. LOL
I only have Thursday off but I don’t have to cook… going to my MILs and she’s orders out.
Thanks Darlene. Your Thanksgiving sounds nice and relaxing. I hope you enjoy it!
What odd weather — and it strikes me as extra odd that some schools would close.
Sounds like a very sore week, but I guess that means you are building muscle?
Yes, that’s a good way to look at it. I’m building muscle! And it is odd that schools were closed… I guess they had a lot of flooding.
Way to crush it this week! So glad your long runs are feeling good and you have figured out that magic mix of hydration. I saw about your monsoons! Crazy! Hope your run went well today too. happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you Deborah! You have a happy Thanksgiving as well.
Yay for the fantastic 18-miler! That’s truly fantastic!
I agree that jolts of pain are best avoided. Hope the alternative strength moves help keep them at bay.
Enjoy the week with your son home!
Thank you Coco! I’m hoping the added strength moves help as well- I’ll keep at it.
We Canadians just have a regular week ahead – Happy Thanksgiving week to you!
That’s true- it’s a regular week for you. But I hope it’s an awesome one!
Wow!!!! 18 miles in the happy bank! I hear ya on the DOMS, LOL. I justified my slacking on the lower-body work because of my fall races. So, yeah, reality kind of kicked my buttocks this week (literally).
Yes, I saw that on your blog- if you haven’t done it in a while, those lower body moves HURT.
DOMS is always earned and never given! I remember so well getting to my last run of the week and thinking “there’s no way I can do this”, and then doing it and getting to bask in the glory on my day off.
The wolves don’t lose sleep shirt wins best gym shirt of the week!
I know! I loved it. I felt like seeing that shirt was my reward for going over to the machine side of the gym.
Yay for everyone under one roof again! That’s so exciting.
I’m not really ready for Thanksgiving. I need to get to Costco at some point before Wednesday for supplies. How will this happen? I have no idea!!
Ha, we need to get moving as well. Luckily my husband is off this week so I’ll be sending him to the store.
Congrats on the fantastic 18 miler. That’s a confidence builder for sure. Glad the Tailwind works so well for you. Thanksgiving is at the IL’s this year so I won’t be cooking. And I’ve got a crazy work schedule on top of it all. Thursday is my only day off. Ugh. Enjoy having that college boy home!
Thanks Marcia, I’m enjoying it!!! Since Thursday is your only day off I’m glad you don’t have to cook. You deserve to have the day off!
Ha that turkey in the background Fun. Also that shirt haha.
Congrats for having two days off. No Thanksgiving here in Germany.
Also again impressed with all the exercise you managed. I hardly managed a walk outside.
I seem to remember you having a “Friendsgiving” one year! But I know it’s not a thing in Germany.
No surprise your legs were sore after that 18-miler… but great work for the rest of the week.
I’ll have Thanksgiving off, but will also work Black Friday. It’s ok because nobody else will probably work and it’ll be a quiet day where I can just chip away at my project work without interruption.
Thank you San! That actually sounds like a nice work day on Black Friday. Mine will probably be a little crazy- everyone else seems to be off and wants to come in for a massage.
Our Thanksgiving is loooonnngg over, but I’m excited to celebrate vicariously through all my American bloggy friends.
And three cheers for your son being home. How wonderful <3
It is wonderful, Elisabeth! And now that I have all these Canadian friends, our Thanksgiving seems really late.
That monsoon was rough, from what I heard. I don’t know how much more Florida can take!
I guess we’re ready. We aren’t doing any of our normal traditions this year, so it feels kind of weird.
I’ll do a little work on Black Friday, but since I’m freelance, I’m really trying to schedule otherwise. Have a great Thanksgiving!
As always, I’m super impressed by all the strength workouts you do in addition to your long run — and 18 miles at that! I think there is something in Tailwind that’s kinda magical, I tried it for the first time this weekend on my long run (13.2 miles) which was my longest since my 50K six weeks ago, and it really helped power me through the tough miles. I’d highly recommend the seasonal apple cider flavor if you get the chance to try it!
I’m excited for this week, I’m planning to drive up to my parents’ after work on Tuesday, working from there on Wednesday and then I have off Thursday and Friday, and my sister will also be around for Thanksgiving so it’ll be a great family time! Hope you have a nice week ahead!
What an awesome week of workouts for you! I was finally well enough to get back to working out which felt SO good. I missed the Caroline Girvan workouts! And I was able to run 4 miles on Sunday. I was sore at the end which confirms that dropping down to the 5k is the right decision on Thanksgiving. I am bummed I can’t do the 10k but oh well.
My new hire and I figured out our Thanksgiving work schedule today. We’ll both work today/Tues, then I’ll work Wednesday and he’ll check emails on Friday which I expect will be a totally DEAD day. So I get Thur/Fri off and he gets Wed/Thur off. So everyone wins I think? We have some busy days ahead with plans on Thur, Fri and Sun but it’s all things I’m looking forward to!
How exciting that your 18-mile training run felt so good even with the climbing temps and humidity!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Yay on that 18 miler!! I do like Tailwind. I have a big container of it but I always forget to take it with me, especially since it’s not hot out! I hope you are enjoying your family time. I have to work on Friday too and have Wed & Thurs off. It’s challenging trying to carve out some family time (all 4 of us) because my daughter is working, and of course she has to work a lot because she works at the mall! Oh well, I’ll take what I can get.
Wow, you had a really hard week and you still showed up and Did The Things! You probably did a lot more than others would have – you never, ever give up. 🙂
The Thanksgiving house is great! I am glad they went with what they wanted, no peer pressure. 😉
I’m sure you are enjoying your weekend at home with your WHOLE family. <3
