walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- I’m TRYING To Rest…

Oh, hello!  Thanks for stopping by the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah.  My big workout this week was a long run on Sunday, and then my focus for the rest of the week was rest and recover.  I made a serious effort to get at least seven hours of sleep a night, which was more successful some nights than others.  Let’s just see how it all went down.

Sunday

This was my last long long run before my race- there will be one more short long run coming up.  For this run, I ventured off the trails onto the roads, and ran from my house to the beach…

…and then turned around and ran back home.  I had to throw in some extra miles in the neighborhood, and the end result was a 26 mile run.  Honestly… it sounded like a fun idea, but dealing with the traffic, train tracks, and drawbridges made this run a little stressful.  I’ll stick to my trails from now on!

Monday

Oof.  I’m tired.  I mean… did I not know running 26 miles would be hard???  I didn’t expect to be this sore.  I took my tired legs to the gym and did what is known in certain circles as the “Cool Bloggers Workout.”  3/12/30- 3 miles per hour, 12% incline, for 30 minutes.

It actually felt pretty good, and when I was done I used a couple of the abs machines.  On days like this I like using the machines at the gym for core, because they isolate the abs and don’t stress out my sore hip flexors.

Tuesday

Time to run again!  I walked for a mile and then ran 3.  Followed by dead bugs and plank.

Still sore.

Wednesday

Strength day at home.  I wasn’t up to much- I did Runners Touch, the Knees Over Toes exercises, and dead bugs.

Then I spent the day in Jupiter!  My daughter was playing in the All-County band, and they had rehearsal from 8-4.  Jupiter is an hour away, so rather than spend four hours in the car driving two round-trips, I opted to stay up there and had a mini-adventure.  Details coming up next week!

Thursday

I’m starting to feel back to normal- I walked a mile and ran 4, followed once again by core.

At night we had to drive to Jupiter for my daughter’s concert.  The concert was fun, but we didn’t get home until almost 11 pm, which messed up my efforts to get more sleep.  Oh well (but I’m wondering- couldn’t they have this concert on a FRIDAY next year? Just a thought.)

Friday

Hmmm.  It seems like if I were doing things correctly, I would spring out of bed in the morning, cheerily exclaiming “Top of the morning!” to my husband.  Instead, the alarm went off and I muttered “Egads!” before getting up and literally staggering across the room.  My feet are always sore in the morning- it helps if I can stretch them out in bed first, but this morning the cats were meowing hungrily and I had to get my daughter up and moving.  Arg.

Instead of a gym day, I did strength at home again.  It actually turned out to be a pretty good workout- I did squats, Bulgarian split squats, overhead shoulder press, all with dumbbells.  I also did dead bugs and the Knees Over Toes exercises.  I’m making some progress with those!  My right knee is less achy while doing them, which I count as a win.

Saturday

Top of the morning!  Just kidding.  I grumbled a little again as I got out of bed, but then it was out the door for a 5 mile run before work.  No core after this run because I simply forgot.

You can see the moon peeking through the clouds.

Sunday

Ahhhhh.  On tap for today- OFF.  Sleeping in, a little cooking (it’s my husband’s birthday so we’re making a brunch) and then reading, relaxing, and football.  I’m making a Detroit style pizza for the Lions game tonight!

How was your week?  Did you get enough sleep?

Have you ever made (or eaten) a Detroit style pizza? – I haven’t, but I’m up for the challenge!

Weekly Rundown- That Was Weird…

What a week!  We thought we were getting a hurricane, and ended up with tornadoes.  Because the hurricane itself didn’t hit us that badly, most people in our area had little to no damage- except for those in the path of the tornadoes, where there was utter destruction.  Luckily we were in the first category, but everyone is left with the feeling, “What just happened?”  But of course… there were still workouts.  Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting.  Here we go… Monday It was a rainy day.  In the morning I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, and saved my run for later in the day.  I thought I might go to the gym and run on the treadmill, but there was no thunder or lightning, so I ran 3 miles outside. Tuesday I started the day with this 30 Minute Pilates Core Workout..  OUCH.  It was hard!  Followed it up with hip stability exercises, and that was it for the morning.  Later in the day we got news that schools would be closed Wednesday-Thursday because of Milton. Wednesday Hmmm!  I had a 10 mile run planned.  But there’s a hurricane coming.  Should I run on the treadmill?  Milton is still out in the Gulf of Mexico and isn’t due to make landfall on the west coast of Florida till night.  The weather seemed fine, so I decided to run outside.  Instead of going to my nearby trail (which is on the edge of the Everglades) I decided to stick to streets closer to home.  I was thinking it would be safer, in case of lightning. Once again, I was a little dismayed how hard 10 miles felt.  I thought about cutting it short, but instead did my trick of running 30 seconds/walking 30 seconds until I felt better, and ended up doing the whole distance. I went inside, took a shower and when I got out we had a tornado warning.  WHAT?   We turned on the TV and saw that a tornado was passing just to the west of us (you know, like where my Everglades trail is!) It was moving north, so didn’t affect us directly.  But several tornadoes went through our county and wreaked havoc, as tornadoes do. Lesson learned- take the weather seriously.  The outer bands of Milton spawned around 20 tornadoes throughout the state that day. Thursday Milton moved through overnight, causing some gusty winds but not much else.  We awoke to a beautiful, breezy Thursday!  Since we all thought the weather was going to be terrible, work was canceled for the day and I slept in.  But later in the day I decided to go for a run.  I had new shoes! I just ran 2 miles, then did a MadFit standing core workout.  Then we got word that schools would be closed AGAIN on Friday.  So many people in our county lost power in the tornadoes, and they were still going through every school to make sure there was no damage. Friday Okay, I’m so confused.  What day is it, anyway?  My daughter was home, but I had work (side note- it’s SUCH A RELIEF when your kids are old enough to stay home alone.  When they’re little, these school closures are brutal.). I went to the gym for leg day! Saturday 4 mile run before work.  I don’t know what’s up with this hazy photo.  It was a beautiful day!  Milton blew in some cooler, dryer air.  Not actually cool or dry- but coolER and dryER.  The end is in sight. Sunday On tap- sleeping in and watching the Chicago Marathon!  Then in the afternoon I’m hoping to put up my outdoor Halloween decorations.  I’m cautiously optimistic that we will have no more storms, so it’s time for outdoor decs! These storms are always scary.  Luckily everyone in our Florida blogging community made it through unscathed.  Our real life friends are all fine, although my daughter’s band director had a tornado go through his neighborhood!  He had damage to his house, but it’s still standing and, most important, he and his family are all fine.  PHEW. Did you have a “normal” week?- I’m trying to remember what that feels like. Are you getting fall weather?

Milton!

Hi there!  Usually I do a coffee date post on Fridays, but I’m all discombobulated this week.  It IS Friday, right?  We’ve had an eventful couple of days here… but we’re fine, our house is fine, and our friends are fine.  We’re VERY lucky. But, we had a tornado!  Actually a couple tornadoes went through our county.  We got a tornado warning, turned on the TV, and they were showing the tornado live, as it was caught on a traffic cam.  On the other side of the screen they showed a map of the county and where the tornado was going. It was scarily close to us, but we could see on the map that it would stay to the west and was moving north.  Remember- Florida houses have no basements!  Everyone in the path was urged to get into their bathtubs. Just about all our destruction from Milton came from these tornadoes.  Most of the county is fine, but the areas in the path of the tornado were obviously devastated.  The schools were closed Wednesday, Thursday, and they’re closed again today because so many people are without power, and they’re still making sure all the schools are structurally sound. Seeing the damage so close to home, and then all the flooding and wind damage on the west coast, makes me feel a little guilty- but we really had no issues from this storm (other than being temporarily scared by the tornado warning.) We had no damage and didn’t lose power.  I had a little unexpected vacation from work (we were closed for a couple days) and well…. I kind of …. cringe… (I’m very sorry!) enjoyed it. On Wednesday (when Milton was still out in the Gulf of Mexico) my daughter asked if her friend could sleep over.  Sure!  Because it’s always a good idea to be in charge of someone else’s kid in a natural disaster, right? I picked up her friend and we stopped at Target for last minute supplies.  Remember my storm snacks?  Well, the girls took a dim view of the Lesser Evil popcorn, keto plant-based cereal, and sugar-free chocolate chips.  They loaded up the cart with more “appropriate” supplies. I took the opportunity to get a couple more candles.  I figured, if we’re going to be stuck in the house, it might as well smell good, right?  I had such a good time smelling them all (I always think of the Girl Next Door Fall Extravaganza candle sniffing when I do this.) I love all the names… But this was my favorite: I ended up choosing these two: By the way, did you know that money spent during a storm doesn’t really count?  We were throwing things into the cart with reckless abandon.  My husband wasn’t too pleased (especially with the mocha marshmallow coffee.)  But we were ready to hunker down. The hunkering didn’t last long!  By Thursday morning the worst of the storm had passed, and we were left with a beautiful, breezy day.  We even opened our windows (for the first time since… March?) It wasn’t exactly COOL.  But it was less humid, and we enjoyed the windows open until 11 am, when I realized I was roasting and we had to turn the AC back on. Since I had a bonus day off of work, I decided to start working on my blog to fix the sidebar problem.  So if you never hear from me again, you’ll know what happened.  No, just kidding- I backed it up!  Hopefully I can fix the current issue and also clean up a few other things that have been bugging me. Now, back to regular life!  All our friends on the west coast evacuated.  Stephany went to Ocala; two more friends drove all the way to South Carolina, and others flew up to New Jersey.  We’ll be anxiously awaiting word from them on how their homes fared in the storm.  We’re so close to the end- PLEASE, no more hurricanes! Have you ever been through a tornado? Do you have a favorite fall candle scent? Top photo by Greg Johnson on Unsplash

Reading and Eating

Well, it was my first post- Century Trilogy week of reading, so it was bound to feel a little blah.  But I’m happy to report that I finished this book, and can weigh in with my opinion: I liked it!  But I didn’t LOVE it.  The characters were interesting and I was curious to see where the story was going to go.  It’s a mystery, and I always love a mystery.  The thing I didn’t love was, the story was told from multiple timelines.  I think that could be super confusing if you listened to the audio version of this book (anyone who listened want to let me know?) Overall the ending was satisfying- but I wish the same story could have been told without the confusing time period switching back and forth.  But that’s my personal preference- I’m just not a fan of that style. Next up: I’m only about 1/4 of the way into this, but I’m liking it so far.  The premise is, a mysterious woman gets up on an airplane and walks down the aisle, telling each passenger when and how they’re going to die.  The passengers react with confusion, outrage, amusement… but six of them are given especially early death dates, and I’m just getting to the part of the book where we’ll see if the first prediction comes true. I’m not far enough into the book to say if I’m going to love it, or just like it.  But I’m enjoying it so far. On to the eats!  This week I made Suzanne’s Chickpea and Sweet Potato Stew.  It was so good! I also decided to splurge on the weekend, and made lasagna (I always use the recipe from Isa Chandra Moscowitz’s Veganomicon.) And, storm snacks!  We were hoping that Milton would nudge a little bit north, but it’s actually tracking further SOUTH now.  The counties to the north of us now have a hurricane warning.  It looks like we’ll have a tropical storm, but if it tracks further south we’ll put up our shutters tomorrow (we have accordion shutters which are attached to the house- all we have to do is pull them closed and lock them.) Either way, I stopped at the store for snacks! WHY do we feel like we need and deserve junk food when there’s a storm coming???  The cashier actually asked the woman in front of me, “Are you having a party?” The woman said “No, I just want to make sure I’m stocked up in case I can’t leave the house.”  Hee hee. Wish us luck!  I’ll be here eating my popcorn, and anxiously watching to see how our friends on the west coast are faring. What are you reading now? What are your favorite storm snacks? My Superpower Would Be…

You know that question, if you could have a superpower, what would it be?  After contemplating many possibilities (flying, being invisible) I’ve decided that I definitely want my superpower to be the ability to control the weather. We have another hurricane heading to Florida.  It’s forecast to hit the Tampa area, which is terrible (if you haven’t already read it, here’s Stephany’s post– her car was totaled in the flooding from Helene, and now she has to evacuate.)  After it hits the west coast, Milton will continue across the state- hopefully staying just to the north of us. But we have a tropical storm warning, so school has been canceled for Wednesday and Thursday, and all after school activities are canceled for this week.  For my daughter this includes a rehearsal, a concert, an audition for an all-county band, a football game and a band picnic.  WHAT are the odds that this storm would hit us in this week of all weeks, where so many things were scheduled???  I’m really cranky about this, because we were supposed to bring soda to the picnic, and now I have about 50 cans of Coke in my fridge.  Grr. (Yes, I know- people died from Helene, and I’m complaining about having too much Coke.  Yes, I feel like a bad person.) I hate not knowing what’s going to happen.  Did they cancel school for nothing?  Should we be putting up our hurricane shutters?  At least, it seems smart to prepare for a power outage.  Let’s see- do we have our battery powered fans?  Check.  Lamps?  Check.  Beer?  Check.  (WAIT.  How did that get on the list?)  Food?  Che-eck… a trip to the store is probably in order.  Water?  Nope.  I’ll start filling bottles with our purified tap water (or, if we have a boil water order, we can just start drinking Coke, heh heh.) I don’t mean to make light of the situation.  There’s no great outcome here.  If I say I hope the storm doesn’t hit Tampa, then I’m wishing it on someone else.  But since I can’t control the weather (darn!) I have an alternative superpower. From this article, “40 Simple Rules for Life”, #37: Separate almost everything into two: things you can control and those you can’t. Don’t waste time and energy on what you can’t influence. Yes, that’s a superpower right there.  I’ll prepare, hope for the best, and deal with whatever happens.  Sending love to all our fellow Floridians on the west coast!  Hope everyone is safe. 1. 26 miles takes a toll in your body, so I’d be surprised if you are not tired the next day.
never tried Detroit style pizza? do they also have vegan version? I’m intrigued.

  2. Super impressive week! I am not surprised you felt tired/sore after a 26 mile run.. that is FAR! I can totally relate to staying up too late and then feeling groggy the next morning. I feel like I often have things that keep me up too late like that and it sort of just is what it is. Enjoy your relaxing Sunday! That sounds like a great day. We don’t have anything too pressing on the agenda either. My son was supposed to have a swim meet but turns out now he doesn’t so it opened up our weekend!

    1. Yes, sometimes staying up late is unavoidable, and when you have kids/work sleeping late the next day is not an option either. Oh well- I tried to make up for it last night.
I hope you have a nice day- are you watching football? Who are you rooting for now that the Packers are out of it?

  3. Oof that is a late night on Thursday. That seems like a bad night to have a concert like that when it requires driving for many! I would be exhausted. I never see 11 in the clock, unless I wake up from my slumber at that time to like go to the bathroom. My sleep hasn’t been awesome this week? I have been up during the night reading a few times after lying awake for awhile. I think it’s probably work stress that is the culprit? I had a really intensely busy week at work.

Nice work on getting back at it after basically running a marathon on Sunday! That is a lot of miles to bounce back from!!

I have never had a Detroit style pizza. I am not 100% sure what it is actually. Are they rectangle shaped? We are cheering for Detroit today too!

    1. Yes, they are rectangular shape and the crust is kind of like deep dish, but not exactly. I’ll let you know how it comes out.
You must be tired too if your sleep wasn’t great this week. I hope things calm down at work and you can rest.

  4. Ha ha we all try to rest but then school events be like “jk…everyone’s staying up tonight!!!” What is it that they say about the years being short but the days are oh so looooooong. For a variety of reasons, I slept terribly last night so I’m feeling the effects today.

I can’t wait to hear about Jupiter!

    1. That saying is 100% true- the days are long but the years are short. i try to remind myself of that when I get annoyed by school events like this- in 3 and 1/2 years my daughter will be in college and I’ll be missing her!

  5. Sounds like you had a great week and got in some great workouts even though you were tired and sore! I bet that pizza was so good!!!

I am pretty good at getting plenty of sleep. I am usually ready for bed by 8:30!!

    1. The pizza is coming up tonight! The recipe looks good- now we’ll just see if I can pull it off.
I got in bed at 9:30 a couple times last week, which was big progress for me.

  6. You did a lot of running and a lot of driving this week — both can be exhausting!

Great idea to make Detroit-style pizza. I’m fixing chili in between the games.

  7. I like your goal of getting seven hours of sleep every night. I don’t pay attention (and I know I SHOULD), but I think I’m overall getting more sleep than I used to. I have been “sleeping-in” on the weekends a bit (until 6:30-ish instead of the usual 5:30 routine), and I haven’t been as diligent with the 5:30 workouts on the weekday mornings. That may be due to all the shoveling that’s rocked my world in recent weeks (and my body is simply just more tired than usual), but who knows? I know it’s not because I’m getting older, LOL.

  8. I would be surprised if you were not tired after running 26 miles! I’ve seen the “cool bloggers” workout and 12% incline is tough for 30 min especially the day after a marathon. Rest is definitely part of the training!

    1. I’m going to continue to prioritize rest this week- my sleep isn’t perfect, but it’s better and I’m going to keep this momentum going.

  9. Nice job on that 26 miler. It seems like this training cycle has gone really well for you! Good luck next weekend!

And I must not be a cool blogger because I’ve never heard of that workout! :p

    1. Well, you’ve heard of it now so consider yourself “cool.”
Overall my training for this race has been good! The race is on the 17th and now I just have to not hurt myself between now and then.

  10. Nice workout week! 26 miles – that’s a marathon, isn’t it? So you should be sore!
That strength workout at home sounds great. When I’m back to normal I’ll try to do more Bulgarian split squats at home for practice, I’ve avoided it while I’ve been doing the heavy strength program to be in top shape for the gym.
Sleep can be so hard! There are so many variables that can disturb it. And sometimes you simply want to do things (like concerts) in the evenings.

    1. I don’t have access to heavy weights at home, so I try to do things like BSS where I can’t use heavy weights anyway. Next week I want to get back to the gym and do some proper squats!

  11. Brooklyn pizza. Chicago pizza but nope no Detroit. Keep us posted.

I actually know where Jupiter is… I have a friend in Hove Sound just north.

Good luck tapering… it will be hard for you to hold back, I bet.

I try to get 7 hours. I’m in bed that long but rarely sleep through the night.

    1. I NEVER sleep through the night! Getting up at least twice for the bathroom is normal for me. So I need to be in bed longer than 7 hours to actually get 7 hours of sleep.
Hmm, I wonder if you’ve been to the areas of Jupiter where I was on Wednesday… you can tell me on Tuesday after I write about it.

  12. Ohhh, I’m part of the Cool Bloggers Club (though my treadmill only goes to 10, not 12, incline, and last week I didn’t have 30 minutes, so I did 15 and was still SWEATING.

Jenny – after 26 miles I feel like I would be very worried if you WEREN’T sore and tired. I just can’t believe you keep working out every day. Like I just…am in awe.

Happy Birthday to your husband. I’m watching the Chiefs game with my daughter now.

    1. Somehow I messed up my comment replies- my reply to your comment ended up after Debbie’s. Anyway, you are the OG cool blogger!

  13. It’s great to hear that your long run went well despite the traffic and other obstacles. Congrats!

Apparently, your Detroit style pizza is bringing the Lions good luck. They’re having quite the game so far! 😉

    1. I know!!! My sister and I are texting back and forth- she also made a Detroit style pizza and we’re congratulating ourselves on helping the Lions along.

  14. The Chiefs game was good- close and exciting and the correct team won (ha ha, at least according to me.)
I think you might have been the one to start the “cool bloggers workout.” I like it, and I’ll probably be doing more of it in the next three weeks while I taper for my race.

  15. I would be tired too after a 26 mile long run! I’m impressed you made it to the gym the next day!

I actually do a variation on the cool bloggers workout to work on my power hiking for ultras. Usually it’s 2 miles at 10% incline at 4 mph, but sometimes I bump up the incline or only do 1.5 miles if I’m short on time, and it’s usually as a double workout in the evening after a morning run on the trails. It definitely gets your heart rate up in a short period of time!

My sleep was great this week, but then again I don’t have kid activities to attend! I somehow got over 10 hours Friday night and 9 hours Saturday night, and about 8.5 every weeknight. I don’t love going to bed before 8:30 every night but it does feel good to get that much sleep!

    1. WOW. I’m so envious of all that sleep. I’m wondering how good I could actually feel if I slept that much. You’re motivating me to get in bed earlier this week.
i’m going to incorporate more workouts like that into my routine from now on. Time on feet! It doesn’t all have to be running.

    1. Ha ha… I know. In the past I’ve run there, jumped in the ocean, and had my husband pick me up. i thought a round trip would be fun, but it turned out to be not as much fun as I thought : )

  16. Sigh, Detroit. That was oof. I have never had a Detroit-style pizza but after Google-ing it, I just might!! My sleep was all sorts of messed up last week, but I hurt my back and had a kid up at 3am more nights than not (apparently, “the moon was loud”, sigh). Here’s to more rest for me and a good week for you!

    1. Hahahaha! The moon was loud- I get it!!! But that’s so funny.
Yes, I’m depressed about that game, and I feel really bad for all the Detroit fans- so heartbreaking. The pizza was good though! I’ll post a link to the recipe I used, because she gives you the option of NOT using an official “Detroit style pizza pan” (who has one of those, anyway?)

  17. Good luck with your race! I have been taking a break from anything longer than a half since my 50-miler last May, so I miss those long, long runs! But I’ve got a 50K coming up in November, so I’ll be back at it soon! On the vegan Kit Kats: Amazon has them! My friend ordered some and gave me one. Only problem is they’re kinda pricy for candy bars, and there’s $10 shipping because it’s not a Prime item. But if you really want them, here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Finger-Vegan-Milk-Chocolate-41-5g/dp/B0C7HGWLB3

  18. Oh, man. Detroit. Why you gotta do me like that? I was actually in Michigan over the weekend and it was cool to see so much Lions gear out all over the state (well, the lower peninsula, which is where I was – I think the upper peninsula has a lot of Packers fans). I didn’t feel as weird about wearing my Lions sweatshirt as I normally do in Wisconsin.

Those skies!! The beautiful pink-orange sky of the first photo is giving me life. And the moon peeking out from the clouds!

  19. I’d be tired after 26 miles and several late nights, too!

I’m sure it was wonderful listening to your daughter, though.

I’m tired this week. I had a hot race on saturday, stayed up late, left early for Orlando, spent the day at Sea World, then was up early again to drive home, and then had to help move appliances and paint the laundry room.

    I’m done!

  20. I know it was a training run, but 26 miles is 26 MILES! Of course you’re tired. (Well, and not getting enough sleep doesn’t help). I’ve been tired too this week… I need to get to bed earlier.
