walkers walk… but runners fly

Reading and Eating

Well, it was my first post- Century Trilogy week of reading, so it was bound to feel a little blah.  But I’m happy to report that I finished this book, and can weigh in with my opinion:

I liked it!  But I didn’t LOVE it.  The characters were interesting and I was curious to see where the story was going to go.  It’s a mystery, and I always love a mystery.  The thing I didn’t love was, the story was told from multiple timelines.  I think that could be super confusing if you listened to the audio version of this book (anyone who listened want to let me know?)

Overall the ending was satisfying- but I wish the same story could have been told without the confusing time period switching back and forth.  But that’s my personal preference- I’m just not a fan of that style.

Next up:

I’m only about 1/4 of the way into this, but I’m liking it so far.  The premise is, a mysterious woman gets up on an airplane and walks down the aisle, telling each passenger when and how they’re going to die.  The passengers react with confusion, outrage, amusement… but six of them are given especially early death dates, and I’m just getting to the part of the book where we’ll see if the first prediction comes true.

I’m not far enough into the book to say if I’m going to love it, or just like it.  But I’m enjoying it so far.

On to the eats!  This week I made Suzanne’s Chickpea and Sweet Potato Stew.  It was so good!

I added spinach, because why not?

I also decided to splurge on the weekend, and made lasagna (I always use the recipe from Isa Chandra Moscowitz’s Veganomicon.)

And, storm snacks!  We were hoping that Milton would nudge a little bit north, but it’s actually tracking further SOUTH now.  The counties to the north of us now have a hurricane warning.  It looks like we’ll have a tropical storm, but if it tracks further south we’ll put up our shutters tomorrow (we have accordion shutters which are attached to the house- all we have to do is pull them closed and lock them.) Either way, I stopped at the store for snacks!

WHY do we feel like we need and deserve junk food when there’s a storm coming???  The cashier actually asked the woman in front of me, “Are you having a party?” The woman said “No, I just want to make sure I’m stocked up in case I can’t leave the house.”  Hee hee.

Wish us luck!  I’ll be here eating my popcorn, and anxiously watching to see how our friends on the west coast are faring.

What are you reading now?

What are your favorite storm snacks?

Weekly Rundown- That Was Weird…

What a week!  We thought we were getting a hurricane, and ended up with tornadoes.  Because the hurricane itself didn’t hit us that badly, most people in our area had little to no damage- except for those in the path of the tornadoes, where there was utter destruction.  Luckily we were in the first category, but everyone is left with the feeling, “What just happened?”  But of course… there were still workouts.  Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting.  Here we go… Monday It was a rainy day.  In the morning I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, and saved my run for later in the day.  I thought I might go to the gym and run on the treadmill, but there was no thunder or lightning, so I ran 3 miles outside. Tuesday I started the day with this 30 Minute Pilates Core Workout..  OUCH.  It was hard!  Followed it up with hip stability exercises, and that was it for the morning.  Later in the day we got news that schools would be closed Wednesday-Thursday because of Milton. Wednesday Hmmm!  I had a 10 mile run planned.  But there’s a hurricane coming.  Should I run on the treadmill?  Milton is still out in the Gulf of Mexico and isn’t due to make landfall on the west coast of Florida till night.  The weather seemed fine, so I decided to run outside.  Instead of going to my nearby trail (which is on the edge of the Everglades) I decided to stick to streets closer to home.  I was thinking it would be safer, in case of lightning. Once again, I was a little dismayed how hard 10 miles felt.  I thought about cutting it short, but instead did my trick of running 30 seconds/walking 30 seconds until I felt better, and ended up doing the whole distance. I went inside, took a shower and when I got out we had a tornado warning.  WHAT?   We turned on the TV and saw that a tornado was passing just to the west of us (you know, like where my Everglades trail is!) It was moving north, so didn’t affect us directly.  But several tornadoes went through our county and wreaked havoc, as tornadoes do. Lesson learned- take the weather seriously.  The outer bands of Milton spawned around 20 tornadoes throughout the state that day. Thursday Milton moved through overnight, causing some gusty winds but not much else.  We awoke to a beautiful, breezy Thursday!  Since we all thought the weather was going to be terrible, work was canceled for the day and I slept in.  But later in the day I decided to go for a run.  I had new shoes! I just ran 2 miles, then did a MadFit standing core workout.  Then we got word that schools would be closed AGAIN on Friday.  So many people in our county lost power in the tornadoes, and they were still going through every school to make sure there was no damage. Friday Okay, I’m so confused.  What day is it, anyway?  My daughter was home, but I had work (side note- it’s SUCH A RELIEF when your kids are old enough to stay home alone.  When they’re little, these school closures are brutal.). I went to the gym for leg day! Saturday 4 mile run before work.  I don’t know what’s up with this hazy photo.  It was a beautiful day!  Milton blew in some cooler, dryer air.  Not actually cool or dry- but coolER and dryER.  The end is in sight. Sunday On tap- sleeping in and watching the Chicago Marathon!  Then in the afternoon I’m hoping to put up my outdoor Halloween decorations.  I’m cautiously optimistic that we will have no more storms, so it’s time for outdoor decs! These storms are always scary.  Luckily everyone in our Florida blogging community made it through unscathed.  Our real life friends are all fine, although my daughter’s band director had a tornado go through his neighborhood!  He had damage to his house, but it’s still standing and, most important, he and his family are all fine.  PHEW. Did you have a “normal” week?- I’m trying to remember what that feels like. Are you getting fall weather?

Milton!

Hi there!  Usually I do a coffee date post on Fridays, but I’m all discombobulated this week.  It IS Friday, right?  We’ve had an eventful couple of days here… but we’re fine, our house is fine, and our friends are fine.  We’re VERY lucky. But, we had a tornado!  Actually a couple tornadoes went through our county.  We got a tornado warning, turned on the TV, and they were showing the tornado live, as it was caught on a traffic cam.  On the other side of the screen they showed a map of the county and where the tornado was going. It was scarily close to us, but we could see on the map that it would stay to the west and was moving north.  Remember- Florida houses have no basements!  Everyone in the path was urged to get into their bathtubs. Just about all our destruction from Milton came from these tornadoes.  Most of the county is fine, but the areas in the path of the tornado were obviously devastated.  The schools were closed Wednesday, Thursday, and they’re closed again today because so many people are without power, and they’re still making sure all the schools are structurally sound. Seeing the damage so close to home, and then all the flooding and wind damage on the west coast, makes me feel a little guilty- but we really had no issues from this storm (other than being temporarily scared by the tornado warning.) We had no damage and didn’t lose power.  I had a little unexpected vacation from work (we were closed for a couple days) and well…. I kind of …. cringe… (I’m very sorry!) enjoyed it. On Wednesday (when Milton was still out in the Gulf of Mexico) my daughter asked if her friend could sleep over.  Sure!  Because it’s always a good idea to be in charge of someone else’s kid in a natural disaster, right? I picked up her friend and we stopped at Target for last minute supplies.  Remember my storm snacks?  Well, the girls took a dim view of the Lesser Evil popcorn, keto plant-based cereal, and sugar-free chocolate chips.  They loaded up the cart with more “appropriate” supplies. I took the opportunity to get a couple more candles.  I figured, if we’re going to be stuck in the house, it might as well smell good, right?  I had such a good time smelling them all (I always think of the Girl Next Door Fall Extravaganza candle sniffing when I do this.) I love all the names… But this was my favorite: I ended up choosing these two: By the way, did you know that money spent during a storm doesn’t really count?  We were throwing things into the cart with reckless abandon.  My husband wasn’t too pleased (especially with the mocha marshmallow coffee.)  But we were ready to hunker down. The hunkering didn’t last long!  By Thursday morning the worst of the storm had passed, and we were left with a beautiful, breezy day.  We even opened our windows (for the first time since… March?) It wasn’t exactly COOL.  But it was less humid, and we enjoyed the windows open until 11 am, when I realized I was roasting and we had to turn the AC back on. Since I had a bonus day off of work, I decided to start working on my blog to fix the sidebar problem.  So if you never hear from me again, you’ll know what happened.  No, just kidding- I backed it up!  Hopefully I can fix the current issue and also clean up a few other things that have been bugging me. Now, back to regular life!  All our friends on the west coast evacuated.  Stephany went to Ocala; two more friends drove all the way to South Carolina, and others flew up to New Jersey.  We’ll be anxiously awaiting word from them on how their homes fared in the storm.  We’re so close to the end- PLEASE, no more hurricanes! Have you ever been through a tornado? Do you have a favorite fall candle scent? Top photo by Greg Johnson on Unsplash

My Superpower Would Be…

You know that question, if you could have a superpower, what would it be?  After contemplating many possibilities (flying, being invisible) I’ve decided that I definitely want my superpower to be the ability to control the weather. We have another hurricane heading to Florida.  It’s forecast to hit the Tampa area, which is terrible (if you haven’t already read it, here’s Stephany’s post– her car was totaled in the flooding from Helene, and now she has to evacuate.)  After it hits the west coast, Milton will continue across the state- hopefully staying just to the north of us. But we have a tropical storm warning, so school has been canceled for Wednesday and Thursday, and all after school activities are canceled for this week.  For my daughter this includes a rehearsal, a concert, an audition for an all-county band, a football game and a band picnic.  WHAT are the odds that this storm would hit us in this week of all weeks, where so many things were scheduled???  I’m really cranky about this, because we were supposed to bring soda to the picnic, and now I have about 50 cans of Coke in my fridge.  Grr. (Yes, I know- people died from Helene, and I’m complaining about having too much Coke.  Yes, I feel like a bad person.) I hate not knowing what’s going to happen.  Did they cancel school for nothing?  Should we be putting up our hurricane shutters?  At least, it seems smart to prepare for a power outage.  Let’s see- do we have our battery powered fans?  Check.  Lamps?  Check.  Beer?  Check.  (WAIT.  How did that get on the list?)  Food?  Che-eck… a trip to the store is probably in order.  Water?  Nope.  I’ll start filling bottles with our purified tap water (or, if we have a boil water order, we can just start drinking Coke, heh heh.) I don’t mean to make light of the situation.  There’s no great outcome here.  If I say I hope the storm doesn’t hit Tampa, then I’m wishing it on someone else.  But since I can’t control the weather (darn!) I have an alternative superpower. From this article, “40 Simple Rules for Life”, #37: Separate almost everything into two: things you can control and those you can’t. Don’t waste time and energy on what you can’t influence. Yes, that’s a superpower right there.  I’ll prepare, hope for the best, and deal with whatever happens.  Sending love to all our fellow Floridians on the west coast!  Hope everyone is safe. Weekly Rundown- Between the Storms

Oh, hi there!  Thanks for stopping by the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!)  It was a good week- read on for details… Monday I started the week with a 3 mile run… …followed by the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout. Tuesday This was a strength day at home- hip stability exercises, upper body strength focused on back, and a MadFit standing core workout.. Wednesday “Long” run!  8 miles at my old favorite trail.  The last time I was here was before my race in February. I forgot how much I love this trail.  We may not have mountains or woods, but I like to call this trail “Florida-beautiful.” I was really happy with how well my calf held up in spite of the fact that this is a sandy trail.  But, I was a little alarmed at how hard eight miles felt!  Maybe it was the weather- I’m not complaining, mind you, but I’ll just mention that it was hot AF.  Or, maybe I’m just out of shape.  This was the first long-ish run I’ve done since May.  Well, I’ll just keep grinding away. Thursday Leg day at the gym!  Squats, deadlifts, and abs. Friday I knew I was going to run two days in a row- for the first time since May- so I kept this run short.  2 miles… …followed by another MadFit standing core workout. and then hip stability exercises. Saturday It was a dark and stormy morning! Actually, it was just dark at first.  I ran 4 miles, and in the last mile the rain started.  Luckily no lightning though! I’m loving this schedule of a long run in the middle of the week, and Sundays off.  I finished this run, congratulated myself on a solid week, went to work, and then came home and hunkered down for the weekend. What?  Some people go out on Saturday night?  Don’t be ridiculous!!!  We had plenty of entertainment right in our living room.  First up was my son’s senior recital. This was a big day for him, and while we couldn’t be there in person, we were able to livestream the concert.  Other friends and relatives around the country were able to watch as well. After that excitement, we watched the Baylor game.  Arg!  Can we ever WIN???  Oh well- at least we have the Dolphins tomorrow (Oh.  Wait… sigh.) Sunday On tap- sleeping in!  Waffles… football… the usual Sunday activities.  And- we have ANOTHER hurricane headed to Florida.  It’s predicted to hit Tampa, which is the last thing they need.  We’re forecasted to get a lot of rain.  I don’t want to wish away any of this time, but we’ll all be happy when hurricane season is OVER. How was your week? Do you like to sleep in on weekends, or do you keep to your regular schedule? – I know you’re supposed to stick to the same schedule every day, but there’s no way I’m getting up at 5:30 if I don’t have to!

  1. I have God of The Woods on loan but have not started it, but it IS an audiobook, so I will report back. I do hate it when listening to a book when there are a lot of characters and/or the swap timelines or time periods, so we will see how it goes. I tried to read a book about Richard the Lionhearted and it kept going back and forth in time and back in forth between countries and I just got too confused! I also tried to listen to the Road to Jonestown and it was talking about the color of his eyes and I kept getting distracted by the less important details.

I am currently listening to All The Colors Of The Dark, and I just went to look at the synopsis and it says… a literary saga spanning multi generations and decades…uh oh. However, I enjoyed his book We Begin At The End, so I have hopes that I will like this one too! One I recently read and liked was Looking For Jane, but it is about abortion laws in Canada, so if you are sensitive about that, you may not like it.

    1. God of the Woods switches between timelines AND narrators, so I’ll be interested to hear how you like it on audio.

  2. Except for one book, I have really enjoyed Moriarty’s work, and I’ve been meaning to put that one on my list.
As for snacks – I am always a proponent of a little treat now and then, and if you’re preparing for a storm, well, you need to take joy where you can get it. I love popcorn as you know but I’ve never seen that Catalina Crunch. I bet I would enjoy it.

  3. Ahh, that Here One Moment book sounds….creepy, but also really good! That would be a terrifying situation if that actually happened. I think we always think maybe we’d like to know that, but based on my gut reaction when I read that book premise, I think… I would not! Some things are better off just not knowing, I guess. You’ll have to keep us posted on what you think. It reminds me a little of the YA book “They Both Die in the End”. Have you read that? I read it in 2020 I think and also had similar premise of knowing your death date (although in that case you get a call within 24 hours of your death to let you know that your time’s almost up. EEK.) It follows the story of a couple people who get “the call” and how that last day is spent.

    1. Nope, I wouldn’t want to know. The premise of this book also reminds me of The Measure. When I read that book I also decided I wouldn’t want to know my death date!

  4. Nom nom storm snacks! The next time we get a storm I’m going to make that a thing for us. It doesn’t matter if a storm is coming or not, you’re allowed to treat yourself and have fun. Hopefully Milton will take the hint and go away.

When there is a reason to do multiple timelines in a story I’m all for it, but when it’s done wrong it’s a huge pet peeve of mine. I feel like more often than not it’s just a way to hide a weak story or pad out the book. I’m glad that I DNF’d GOTW.

Hmmm….do I want to read Here One Moment? I think I might! Liane Moriarity is very hit and miss for me, but when she gets it right she is incredible.

    1. I’ll let you know how this one is! And, yeah, I just felt like GOTW didn’t need all those multiple timelines. It distracted me from the story, I guess.

  5. Those are some good storm snacks! I haven’t had the Catalina Crunch cereal in awhile and I think I need to get it again — it’s nice that it actually has some protein to make it more filling than other cereals.

Hopefully Milton doesn’t hit you too hard!

    1. Thanks Ashley! We are also hoping we don’t get hit too hard. I’ve been loving the Catalina Crunch lately- they had a pumpkin spice one for a while that was yummy.

  6. I listened to The God in the Woods and LOVED it. If I didn’t feel moments of confusion about the timelines/multiple characters, I think it just added to the mystery for me. I really, really loved that book.
I had the Here On Moment audiobook on hold (I ONLY listen to Liane Moriarty because I ADORE Caroline Lee’s narration) and som how I missed the notification that it because available when my library added way more licenses. I’m actually wondering if they messed up because I’ve been so eager to listen to it and I highly doubt I would have missed it. It’s supposed to come available again next week and I hope that is the case!

    1. Noemi, so many people loved that book. So, there’s obviously something to it. I hope you get the Moriarty next week. I can imagine it would be good on audio.

  7. The different timelines in God of the Woods did not bother me but I can see how it’s not everyone’s jam as it is more work for the reader to keep track of what is happening. But I kind of prefer that to a linear storyline because it can make the story a bit more interesting. But if you are confused that is not good! I just finished “The Return of Ellie Black” and that might be one that you would like. Very plot-driven and quite a page turner.

We don’t have intense storms like you guys do. I mean we get snow storms but we don’t have to worry about losing access to water or things like that. We have lost power but that is more likely to happen in the summer than the winter and while it’s a pain to lose it in the summer, it’s not as dangerous as losing power in the winter! People will still go to the storm ahead of the storm so it can be quite busy and annoying!

    1. Ooh- I’ll look into that book. It sounds like something I would like. Our stores are insane here- entire shelves cleared off ( like there’s no bread or toilet paper.) People definitely go berserk when there’s a storm coming.

  8. Jenny! I was thinking of you as I listened to news of Milton on the radio this morning. Stay safe and batten down those hatches! (I have no idea what that means and must go look that up, it’s something nautical, isn’t it?)

Glad to hear you’re suitably fortified with snacks and a good book! XOXO

    1. Also: both those meals look SO good! Yes to adding the spinach. I’m all for adding extra color even when the recipe doesn’t call for it. I’m happiest when my dinner can feature all five food colors…

  9. I haven’t found any books with The Century Trilogy magic since I finished those, so you might have a bit of a book hangover for a little while yet.

When bad weather strikes, we load up on snacks and non-perishables because we just don’t know how long we’re going to be without power. Maybe we’ll never lose power, but it’s better to have snacks and delicious treats than to be hungry!

    1. Yes, you never know. Hopefully we won’t lose power in this storm but again- you never know.
I don’t imagine I’ll find a book with the Century magic for a while. When I finish this Moriarty I’m going to strike off in a different direction and read a sci fi book my son recommended.

  10. I don’t typically buy snacks specifically for a storm, but we have a local chip company that actually makes a type of chip called Storm Chips! They’re very popular.

Your food this week looks so cozy and hearty. I love meals this time of year (though admittedly our weather is a whole lot cooler than yours).

These hurricanes are terrible and I can’t believe two intense ones are so close together. Thinking of you and all the other Floridian bloggers I know and wishing every safety and some relief from the mental anxiety of it all…

    1. Thank you Elisabeth! I can’t speak for everyone, but we’re fine today. The storm has passed us. The scariest thing for our coast was tornadoes! But it’s over.
      Ha- Storm Chips, brilliant idea.

  11. I think I have that Moriarty book on hold — I really enjoy her books.

Yay for liking the sweet potato stew! I enjoyed it, too. Adding spinach is a genius idea!

Hope the storm is a non-issue for you! Glad you stocked up on yummies just in case!

    1. Thanks Suzanne! The storm has passed and we’re fine. A lot of people are NOT fine though- there were some scary tornadoes. But it’s over now.

  12. I like the gods in the woods, especially the ending, but I agree that it was confusing if one doesn’t read for extended period of time as there is a lot of switching in characters and time period.
oh… crunchy things always help to calm my nerves so I fully understanding stocking up when waiting for the hurricane to pass.

    1. Yes, I thought the ending was good (but so sad!)
Hmm, I was thinking we were just using the storm as an excuse to buy junk food. But maybe we did need to calm our nerves!

  13. Because storms are stressful and stressful means potato chips! It’s either that or bite each other’s heads off.
I had some butter chickpeas (rather than butter chicken) from the Farm Boy hot bar the other day and they were freaking amazing. I need to try making that stew. I made a lemon pepper roast chicken in the instant pot last week that my husband raved about. My daughter is coming home for fall break on friday which means I have to make peanut chicken and tacos.

    1. Hmmm! I’ll bet I could find a recipe for butter chickpeas- I’ll let you know. And yes, that should be a saying- stress means potato chips.

  14. I made that sweet potato stew last week too! I didn’t have two cans of chickpeas, so I did one can of chickpeas and one of kidney beans and it was so tasty. The spinach addition sounds great too. My husband and two young kids didn’t love it, but my older kid and I did. On well, more for me!
I don’t know if I’ve ever gotten storm snacks! I love the idea, though.
