walkers walk… but runners fly

The Big Day

Halloween, I mean.  But also… the election.  I’m challenging myself not to talk about the election again here until next week.  I was doing pretty well, but now every time I think about it my stomach clenches with anxiety.  I know other people are feeling the same way, so the last thing you need is me reminding you to worry.

So let’s talk about Halloween!  Do you dress up?  I love Halloween, but I never dress up.  There would be nowhere for me to wear a costume- I can’t wear one to work, and I’m not going to a party.  I have been wearing my Halloween t-shirt though:

And I’ve been sporting my “spooky” hair clip.  My daughter says claw clips are for old people.  So be it.

My daughter will be going to a Halloween party, and I’ll stay home and give out candy.  My trick-or-treating days are long over, and I don’t miss it.  Well… maybe a little.  This year, my daughter is dressing up as a character from a… game (I think?) and her costume is a black wig, white shirt, and black pants.  Apparently her friend is going as a partner character, and the two of them will make sense together.  Whatever!  I miss these days:

This was the last year of a full, actual costume.

We also don’t carve pumpkin anymore, and I do NOT miss that!  I never really enjoyed it.  I think these were the last ones we carved:

Tee hee! I made the “eye roll” design.

In addition to Halloween, we have a busy week and I’m all for it!  My daughter has an audition, another social event, a pep band rehearsal and we have a home football game.  Bring it on!  It’s the start of our super busy season, and I love it.

Are you doing anything for Halloween?  Do you like dressing up?  Do you carve pumpkins?

  1. the girls have halloween party at School and at our condo, so I am happily not doing anything for them except ordering the costume. I think I dressed up only once for halloween, Wonder Woman probably. it was fun but not anymore if it’s a night outing.

    1. Ha, that’s true- Halloween occurs at night, and we go to bed early. I’m not too happy that my daughter’s party is on a school night, but oh well. We’ll survive.

  2. Ha, that eye-roll pumpkin is genius! 🙄
What do you do with the inside stuff of the pumpkin when you carve it? Do you save it for soup or something?
We’re not doing anything Halloweeny over here. I’m not into scary stuff at all! I can’t even watch a moderately scary film without having a sleepless night afterwards. 😅

    1. When I carved pumpkins, I would roast the seeds but throw out the rest of the inside gunk. I’m pretty sure the big pumpkins aren’t great for eating. Anyway I don’t have to worry about that anymore!

  3. As you know I am NOT a fan of Halloween. But the kids love it. Thankfully, this year I get to skip it and I am THRILLED. I don’t know if my husband if going to carve a pumpkin with them or not. Not my circus, not my monkeys this year. One year we used tiny cookie cutters and a drill bit to make perfect circles and stars in the pumpkin and it was stunning. Definitely my favourite year.
I dressed up a few years ago to go around with the kids; I put on PJs, a robe, put an eye mask on my head and carried a teddy bear. Basically, I went outside how I was currently dressed. It was the best. I’m in awe of people that go all-out, but that’s never going to be me…

    1. Ha ha, okay great idea. If you’re going to make me go to a Halloween event at night, I’ll just wear my pajamas. I know it’s not your favorite holiday- I’m glad you get to skip it this year!

  4. The kids are using our house as a Halloween home base, so we will have a bug pizza situation happening for 6th, 7th, and 11th graders. The high schoolers are I think just watching a scary movie and answering the door while we are out with Minnie.

Follow Michelle Obama’s advice and when you feel nervous DO SOMETHING– donate, phone bank, knock doors– whatever you can do

  5. I love the eye roll pumpkin! And Angie’s throw back costume is so cute! You know you’re in Florida when you can wear flip flops on Halloween!

I did not like Halloween until I had kids. I love how excited they are to dress up and I enjoy taking some of their candy. Ha. I do not dress up, though. That is just not my think at all!!

    1. Yes, I wasn’t that into Halloween until I had kids- but it is a very fun kid holiday! And yes- you can tell she was a Florida witch.

  6. Neither of my boys are trick or treating this year, I don’t think, for the first time ever! E has a playoff soccer game right after school, and later A has swim practice. (They give the little kids off, but still hold practice for the older ones!) I always make chili and salad and cupcakes on Halloween, family tradition, and my parents often come if it works out. (Sounds like they will this year!)

In terms of election talk, I will vote (haha, pun intended!) for you to not talk about it for a bit. lol! I hate politics though and it’s my least favorite subject to talk/read about, and of course it’s EVERYWHERE right now. I made an intentional choice when I started my blog (in 2020) that I would never blog about politics there. I’m not saying it’s not an important topic, of course, but for ME, I guess I really just want blogging to be an escape from all of that! It already permeates everything else, everywhere, so I decided to keep my blog a little politics-free bubble where I can just enjoy thinking and writing and reading and talking about other more uplifting aspects of life. 🙂 There are enough other places for politics already in my world. That said, it’s your blog and you should absolutely talk about whatever the heck you want!! (But if you want a brief escape from it too, come on over to my blog bc I promise I won’t be talking about it! haha 😅)

    1. Yes, I agree that we all need some fun diversions right now. I will talk about it a little, but absolutely not for the rest of this week! Even next week, I don’t think I can help mentioning it, but for the most part NaBloPoMo will go on as usual, not dwelling on whatever the outcome is.
Angie had a scheduled pep band rehearsal on Halloween but the band director moved it to Wednesday, which she was very happy about!

  7. I love Halloween – well, I love the people watching and having a few candy treats. I haven’t worn a costume or carved a pumpkin since middle school, and I don’t miss it.

This year is going to be a wild card because we’re not sure how the puppy will react to two hours of strangers coming up to the door. I imagine that it’s going to be a tag team effort of one of us staying upstairs with the dog and the other handing out candy.

    1. Oh yes- you have a new puppy! Yes, it will be a bit different. And challenging, probably. Hope you still enjoy the night.

  8. I love that eye roll! I used to like carving a pumpkin and roasting the seeds, but I haven’t done it in years.

I haven’t dressed up in years, either; let’s see, it was 2014 when I worked in that office, and people did dress up if they wanted to. I have a sort of renaissance costume I bought when my cousin had a costume wedding (true story), so I wore that. I still have it, stuck in a closet, but haven’t worn it since. It’s a fun costume but the billowing sleeves get old by the end of the day. I should dig out the picture of myself wearing it.

    1. Ha, that does sound like a great, but possibly impractical, costume to wear to work. I definitely couldn’t wear it as a massage therapist! I’ll just stick with my spooky hair clip.

  9. The eye roll pumpkin is great! I’m not super into Halloween but I did carve a pumpkin when I was up with my parents this weekend. I probably could wear a costume to work but it feels weird, so I’ll just wear my bat sweater because it’s festive and it’ll finally be chilly enough this weekend to wear!

The one Halloween “tradition” I do enjoy has been volunteering at the Javelina Jundred ultra race that happens every year the weekend before Halloween. I’ve volunteered at an aid station every year since 2021 and the race has such a party vibe and it’s fun to see the costumes that runners are wearing, and it’s crazy that they can wear some of these costumes while running 100 km or 100 miles in the heat!

    1. Ooh, that does sound like a fun tradition. And- running 100 miles isn’t hard enough? People wear costumes? Sheesh!

  10. When Iwent to the office, I used to dress up or if Iran a themed race.

    Now just a halloween shirt.

No parties anymore but I will be around to give out candy. Our neighborhood is growing with younger parents and thus kids!!

  11. I used to love dressing up, and when we were young there were so many parties… There are barely any these days. I guess our friends are all grown up :).

I would count your tee and claw clip as a “costume,” Jenny. It makes life interesting and it’s got “flair!”

We carved pumpkins as a family maybe one time? I didn’t grow up in the U.S., but somehow my husband’s family didn’t do it growing up either, so our kids got cheated out of that whole experience.

  12. I love the eyeroll pumpkin. Adorable! I think we may have aged out of carving pumpkins? Like you, I don’t really miss it. But my kid is still super gung ho about costumes and has THREE planned for school this week. She cracks me up.

I think we are doing a sort-of family costume this year? I’m looking forward to it, as long as the rain stays away.

    1. One year my husband dressed as Darth Vader and my son was Luke Skywalker. And they walked around trick-or-treating together. They were a big hit! But we’ve never done a whole family costume.

  13. No Halloween fun for me! I used to go to my mom’s house to help pass out candy but she’s gotten >10 trick or treaters the last few years so we gave up, lol.

I haven’t carved a pumpkin in so long! The only thing I love about carving a pumpkin is roasting the pumpkin seeds!
