walkers walk… but runners fly

Day in the Life- Wednesday

Wednesdays are my day off from work, and this one was extra-easy for my because my daughter did not go to school!  She had a rehearsal all day for the all-county jazz band, which didn’t start until 9 am.  The best part was, SOMEONE ELSE DROVE HER.  One of the other girls in the band picked her up and brought her home.  I’m loving this new phase where my daughter has friends who drive!

We were able to sleep in until 6:30, which felt luxurious (I usually get up at 5 or 5:30.) I made my daughter’s breakfast and puttered around the house until she left at 7:45.  Then I went for a run!

It was late for me to be out running, and I felt the heat and humidity.  Oh well- it was worth it to sleep in.

After I showered, I had breakfast of oatmeal with a scoop of protein powder.  I ate and then lingered for a long time over my tea while I read blogs.

Not too many days left of Crazy Pumpkin Lady! Christmas mugs come out on Black Friday.

At 11:00 I got myself out the door.  I had a bunch of errands, but they were mostly fun.  First up, the mall!  I had to return something for my daughter, and also purchase a birthday present for one of her friends (body lotion from Bath and Body Works.)

Our mall has pretty holiday decorations.

Then it was on to Barnes and Noble!  I’m working on my “Christmas Book Flood” list.  I think these two will be on it:

And, I worked on the little project for yesterday’s blog post (random lists of likes and dislikes.)

At 1:00 I headed to Trader Joe’s, where I encountered a great tragedy:

Dog advent calendars on the left… gaping hole on the right.

THEY WERE OUT OF CAT ADVENT CALENDARS!  I asked, and they said they won’t be getting any more.  Boohoo!

After Trader Joe’s, I stopped at TJ Maxx for a gift card to round out the birthday gift for my daughter’s friend; I stopped at the library to return a book; and I stopped at Sprouts to get my daughter some sushi for dinner (Wednesday is $5 sushi at Sprouts.)

It was a gloomy, drizzly day and I was ready to be home.

Finally- home!  I had a bowl of cereal for lunch…

And then took a lovely nap on the couch.

Wait! Something’s missing…
That’s better.

At 4:15 I woke up.  What a lovely day so far! I had about an hour until my daughter was due to return, so I decided to watch an episode of a holiday baking show.  Hmm, that’s funny.  Why isn’t the TV working?  I guess I’ll read some blog posts instead.

WAIT A MINUTE.  That doesn’t work either.  That’s how I discovered the wifi was out.  Goshdarnit!!!  (Ha… if you read my recent post on how I’ve decided to start swearing more, you’ll know that wasn’t the actual word I used.)

I tried all the usual things- unplugging, resetting, and finally called AT&T.  That was fun!  The account is linked to my husband’s phone number, and apparently he set a four digit passcode, which they needed to access the account. After several unsuccessful guesses, the woman said “Do you want to try the security question?”

Er… sure.  The question was, Who’s your favorite singer?  Um… I DON’T KNOW HOW MY HUSBAND ANSWERED THAT.  “Barbra Streisand?”  No, that’s not it.  OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.  The woman said “Can you contact your husband?”  My husband was in a meeting.  I imagined sending him a text “Hey, who’s your favorite singer?  It’s an emergency, I need to know right now!”  Finally they sent him a verification code, which he sent to me.

But it was all in vain.  They couldn’t figure out what the problem is, so they have to send out a technician.  After a day where I literally had nothing important to do, now we have two days where no one will be home, for the entire day and evening.  Technician appointment for Saturday morning.  Fudge.

By then my daughter was home- I expected histrionics when she discovered there was no wifi, but she was cool.  She said she had to spend the evening reading Lord of the Flies anyway (if she’s spending the evening reading, it means she got WAY behind on that class and now has to dig herself out of a hole.). Perfect!  I made my dinner and sat down with my book as well.

Dinner was a roasted “honey nut squash” which I got at Trader Joe’s- it was so cute!  It looked like a mini butternut squash- with cauliflower, tempeh, and a tahini sauce.

The rest of the evening was spent cleaning the kitchen and doing a load of laundry.  I got in bed around 9:45, read for a while, and turned out the light just after 10:30.

Would you know how to answer the question- who is your significant other’s favorite singer?  – Turns out the correct answer was Ella Fitzgerald.  Darn!  I should have guessed that.

Reading and Eating!

Hooray!  A good old fashioned reading and eating post, like I always used to do on Wednesdays.  My reading slowed

I’ve Changed My Mind

For years, I’ve been adamant about NOT starting Christmas festivities until after Thanksgiving.  However, lately I’ve been re-thinking that.  Today

  1. My Mr and I have such different musical choices that I’d never dare a guess haha! We have a set of responses to security questions that we made up together when we first started having shared things that has served us really well in moments like that haha! For a no WiFi, oof advent calendar day, it seems like you had a good one! I love the picture of you and your daughter finishing the night reading (even if hers was deadline induced)!

    1. Yes, I think my husband and I should sit down and talk through these things. For what it’s worth, he had no idea what the four digit code would have been. I guess we set this up a long time ago.

  2. Days off are amazing. I gf ave one on Monday

My Trader Joe’s has cat advent calendars.

Hope your WiFi is fixed. What a drag.

  3. It’s funny how when you are out of wifi, you all of a sudden get more reading done! When I am camping (and have no service at all) I read A LOT! When I am in service land, I tend to waffle more and not be as good with my reading. Your day sounds great, your nap looked awesome, but that cereal gives me a huge bloat! I think it is the high fiber, but it could be the sunflower oil. Whatever it is, the last time I ate it, I was struggling!

  4. This sounds like a productive but also restful day. I have Fridays off and lately there have been so many things on Fridays that I haven’t gotten to do the things I want to do. Boo. Today I’m off, but I’m going to the little girls’ school for Friendsgiving celebration and I’m brining a turkey breast and pumpkin bread. I would not know who my husband’s favorite singer is. Good question. I know he liked groups growing up like Def Leopard and ACDC. Bummer about the internet. Ours was struggling recently and then I realized that in the great credit card compromise, we hadn’t updated our new cc info. Oops.

  5. I cannot answer who my husband’s favorite singer is, but now I know to ask him on the way home in case there’s a password emergency!

I had taken Wednesday off as a “shouldless day,” but instead it became a day when I just ran errands and was miserable. I did get a cat cuddle on the couch for about thirty minutes, but I wanted it to be the WHOLE DAY. Darn it.

  6. Oh wow I would have no idea who my husband’s favourite singer is. I don’t even know if he has a favourite singer. I’ll have to ask him.
Your day sounds really nice, Jenny! I love all your pumpkin things. We’ve transitioned into Christmas stuff here, I am currently drinking out of my Buddy the Elf mug! Your squash dinner sounds excellent. I love a good roasted veg dinner!

  7. Waking up at 6:30 am on a weekday is a nice treat! I usually take my rest day on Sunday but I ended up running last Sunday so I took Monday off and was able to sleep in until 7:30, and I did 20 mins of yoga before I had to leave for work, and that felt so luxurious compared to waking up at 5 am in the pitch black!

I’m surprised it’s still warm and humid for you at 7:45 am. It’s in the 40s here in the mornings now, maybe up to the low 50s by 8 am but definitely still feels chilly!

I had the opposite scenario with my internet last month — my cell service wasn’t working because of a SIM card issue, so all I had was WiFi until I could take my phone into a Verizon store the next day and get it figured out. I was a little worried I would need to make a call and wouldn’t be able to but fortunately I was ok for about 15 hours without cell service!

  8. Your husband is so classy w/ his love of Ella! I would probably say Phil’s favorite singer is ZZ Top or the Rolling Stones (which are clearly bands and not singers). He would have a hard time guessing if I said Brandi Carlile or Taylor Swift for that question, though. I hope your internet gets restored tomorrow. That is a major hassle!

Your day off sounds wonderful, though, especially the nap with the cat! We are in the part of the year where holding off on your run is beneficial. It has really cooled off here – it’s in the 30s. When Phil opened the door this morning and the cold air came in I said “oh burr!!” and he was like, “actually it’s pretty nice out there.” But he dealt with snow this week so the weather felt nice and I was in NYC where it was in the 50s and I didn’t wear a coat when I was out doing meetings in the city!
