I decided not to watch the Super Bowl this year. WHAT??? I know- I’m usually ranting and raving about football. Well… it all started when I found out Trump was attending the game. Ugh. Then, I heard- and I’m not sure if this is really true or not- that they were not putting the usual slogan “End Racism” in the end zone IN DEFERENCE to Trump. Seriously???
Then Mahomes said it was “an honor” to have him there… Kelce said “that’s cool” BUT THEN WHAT ABOUT YOUR GIRLFRIEND, DUDE… and… I just lost my desire to watch the whole thing.
Guess what I did instead- I went to dinner with Birchie! She was back on our side of the state for one more night before flying home, and was more than happy to meet again. We had Mexican food…

…. and then went for a walk. The area was strangely empty… except for when we passed a sports bar and heard the ruckus inside. Oh yeah- there’s a game going on.
We had an early dinner and I got home right before halftime, so I turned on the game. Did everyone else love the halftime show? I had no idea what was going on. It all sounded like a lot of noise to me- but then, earlier in the day I was listening to the Mozart Requiem, so I’m probably not the target audience for this kind of show.
It wasn’t until the next day that I found out the show was designed as a protest (well yes- I did take note of the Black Uncle Sam.) I don’t want to see it again, but I can appreciate what he was trying to do.
I ended up watching a good part of the second half, and well… I have to say I loved it. I used to like Patrick Mahomes, and I still appreciate his work ethic and think he’s an amazing player. But it was deeply satisfying to see him get his Trump-loving ass kicked.
On the subject of small victories, I listened to the Ezra Klein episode that everyone has been talking about, “Don’t Believe Him.” It is GREAT, and only about 15 minutes long- give it a listen if you haven’t already.
So what’s next? College basketball and more Ezra Klein. I think I might be ready to start engaging again…. just a little.
Did you watch the game? What did you think of the halftime show?

Like you, we came in late. We started watching about 10 minutes before half time. We were rooting for the Eagles (Maya was born in Philly) so we were happy with the outcome. Bonus, we never saw Trump. I heard there were going to be Musk sponsored anti-USAID ads, but I didn’t see any, so that may have been left wing paranoia. I’m sometimes susceptible, I’ll admit.
I love that you had another meetup with Birchie! I would take a blogger meetup over any TV, sports or otherwise. I’m glad you had fun!
We did have fun! And I have a friend who watched the whole game and said she didn’t see Trump at all! Did they really not show him? Anyway- the hald I swa was good, including the ads.
You were probably the ONE blogger (other than Lisa) I expected would watch the SuperBowl, Jenny!
Ah well, I’m sure a bloggy meetup was more fun!
I have to find the halftime show on YouTube–I’ve seen some clips and have been reading some explainers, and it sounds brilliant. (Also I love Kendrick and have tickets to his Detroit show in the summer!)
Then you should definitely watch the show, Maya! I know it’s available. And, maybe I should watch it again, knowing what I know now.
Oh the halftime show! Was awesome! The dancing was SO GOOD– we looooooved it. I
I knew everyone was going to say that! I never like the halftime shows and everyone else always raves about them. It’s definitely me.
The guys watched the game while I was in the room, so I guess I watched it via osmosis. They were cheering for the Eagles, so it was really fun. Even Rex got in on the action! I did watch the halftime show because I like Kendrick Lamar, and I thought it was great.
Dinner with Birchie! How fun!
I’m so out of it, I didn’t even know who Lamar was… but then when I read about the show the next day, I did have a memory of some kind of rapper feud… you can see I have no idea what’s going on.
My new standard for superbowl Sunday is to go to FL and have dinner with you. And then not watch the game as usual;-)
Okay, it s a deal. But if the Dolphins or Bears are playing, I’ll have to watch the game : )
I am not a football fan in the least, so I only watched for the commercials, but I will say I was glad the Eagles won because everyone really wanted the Chiefs to win.
I did watch the Puppy Bowl earlier in the day, and that was amazing as always, and fortunately there were no politics involved, just cute animals!
I know- my sister proposed that we watch the Puppy Bowl instead, but I missed it. Maybe next year!
I don’t know K Lamar at all (except his lawsuit with Drake) and have to admit I was not a big fan of the halftime show. We don’t get any of the cool American Superbowl ads, but I did watch most of the game because the kids wanted to. I never saw Trump (or Taylor Swift). I wanted the Eagles to win and I was so relieved it was a blowout because I get stressed watching close sporting events!
Now I kind of wish I had watched the whole thing because I’m curious- did they show Taylor or Trump at all? It seems weird that they didn’t! In the end I think it was a big hullaballoo about nothing.
I like close, exciting games, but not if I’m heavily invested in one team. Then I find it stressful.
I did not watch the game nor the half time show.
Netflix. And packing.
You had your priorities! I don’t think you’re a football person anyway, right?
I, too, am surprised that you didn’t watch the game, but I don’t blame you for prioritizing dinner with Birchie. Sounds fun. I did watch the game, sort of. I was starting to prep a photo book online for one of my tots who went off to kindergarten and left me in May. I’m late on getting my photo book done for him. He was here for 5 years, so there’s lots of photos to go thru. For the second half, I laid on the couch and read The Blue Castle, because I was behind. I enjoyed the commercials. I was happy to see another team win, but I didn’t really care much about the game. We started watching it late, so we fast forwarded thru the half time show.
