walkers walk… but runners fly

Easter Sunday

I hope everyone saw Trump’s Easter message, although hopefully not on Easter (because you wouldn’t want to ruin your day like that). I know so many Christians who voted for him, and I don’t know how they reconcile that. But here’s a fun fact- the church my husband plays at used to be TRUMP’S CHURCH.

I mean, he only attended on Christmas Eve and Easter (because- obviously. Let’s not pretend too much). But my husband played for several services with Trump in attendance. On the Christmas after the 2016 election, the congregation rose to their feet and applauded when Trump walked in (yep- this is where we live, good old Palm Beach County, Florida). The pastor asked everyone to remember that it was a religious service, and that applause is inappropriate. But then the same thing happened on Easter, and after that I think they kicked him out, ha ha! I mean- I don’t know that for a fact. But I’m guessing it got too disruptive to have him there- the security alone must have been a nightmare. Anyway, he no longer attends. Phew.

Just as a reminder, my husband and son are both trumpet players, and most churches have trumpets for Easter Sunday. I was able to watch their services via livestream.

There’s my husband- it probably goes without saying he’s the one with gray hair : )

In case you’re wondering- why didn’t I just GO to the service? The church my husband plays at is about 45 minutes away. He played two services, with a lengthy break in between. And my son was playing at a church in Dallas. He also had two services. In both cases, it was the later service that was live streamed, and that fit in with my schedule perfectly.

Funny thing- in between his two services my son texted me. He said he slept through his alarm, woke up late and had to rush around hysterically to get out the door and to the first service on time. This has never happened to him before, and he was frantic- you can’t miss an Easter Sunday service! He said he managed to slip in just before the service started, about a minute before he had to start playing. When I watched the livestream of the second service, I had to laugh- he did look a little disheveled.

Paul is the tall one on the right!

You can’t tell from this photo, but for one thing he wasn’t wearing a tie. I could just picture him rushing out the door without it. Luckily the music sounded really good, and this was a Baptist church, which was a little more relaxed and laid back. In the end, all was well.

While I watched the live streams, I cooked! I put together the lasagna for dinner, and made this lemon pound cake from Nora Cooks. Later in the afternoon I had a really nice trail run, and then… dinner!

The only cheese I had was Daiya’s “Mexican blend” (oops) which is why the lasagna looks kind of like enchiladas. But it tasted just fine. And- I had to make my pound cake in a bundt pan because my loaf pan has disappeared (???) But it worked- I didn’t have any but my husband and daughter said it was delicious.

It was a nice day, filled with music (from the church services), a nice run and a delicious dinner.

If you attended church on Easter, were there trumpets?

  1. There were zero trumpets at my church but lots of great music. Of course I had to smile “this was a Baptist church, which was a little more relaxed and laid back.” Amen to that! (As a reminder, I’m Baptist :))

I will admit it gives me warm fuzzies that both your husband and Paul were able to contribute to the joyful celebrations at a church.

I honestly don’t know where to start with Trump. I have quite a lot of family that live in the US that I am virtually certain they all voted for him. They are Christians and I simply do not know how anyone can reconcile the two. On the one hand, I could possibly understand if they believe the end justifies the means. But to believe no justification is necessary. To believe that he upholds the values of the Bible and all that Christianity stands to represent is, frankly, appalling. His Easter message – a time that he could have pointed to hope, to Christ, to love – was yet another outpouring of vitriol and hatred and misinformation. I have so much more to say but I’ll leave it there for now…

    1. I thought you were Baptist! The church my husband played at was Episcopal, and it was interesting to see the difference. I’m sad for you that your church had no trumpets- but I’m pretty sure it didn’t ruin your Easter : )
Really- you think your family voted for him? Ugh. HOW can this be happening???

    1. Thank you Sarah! And yes- I’m wondering if Trump’s message made anyone of his Christian supporters uncomfortable at all. Probably not- he can get away with anything.

  2. What a fun way to spend Easter. It’s only going to get better because in a few years your daughter will be getting these gigs, so you’ll have three services to tune into.

We did our family Easter dinner on Saturday night, since the other inlaws had dibs on Sunday. Everyone came to our house. We made brunch foods food for dinner, of course, and we had an adult Easter egg hunt. 10 people and 3 dogs!

    1. Ha, an adult Easter egg hunt! I want one of those.
I don’t know- churches don’t usually have flutes on Easter. I mean it’s possible, but not probable that my daughter will have Easter gigs.

  3. I did not go to church on Easter because I was still at the Grand Canyon, but I did enjoy my last morning there (the 5+ hour drive back to my parents’ house, not so much…).

It honestly makes me sick that so many Christians voted for Trump, when he goes against everything that the Bible teaches! I’m not sure what it’s going to take to get his followers to turn against him…

    1. I know Ashley. I don’t think they ever will turn- whatever Trump says, they believe. He can do no wrong and I just don’t get it.

  4. We do not have trumpets playing at our church. I bet that would be an amazing addition. I’m picturing your son running around to get to the church on time and it’s reminding me of Hugh Grant in the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral. That’s a romcom I haven’t seen in decades, but Curly loves a romcom and I told her we should watch that one next.

I hosted Coach’s folks and his sister, her husband and their two kids for Easter. Our kids were all here minus Tank and Mini. The downside to college. Tank usually comes home, but it’s a long way to go for a short time and he’s soaking up the last few months before he graduates. Anyway, I made a ton of food, and had one slight mishap with one oven not getting turned on. Long story, but it all worked out. It was a brief gathering, because they all drove together and my niece had to race home in order to be there for her ride back to college.

    That cake looks delish.

    1. Yep- the downside to college for sure. Spring break doesn’t sync up with Easter, so it’s hard for them to come home. Your Easter gathering sound huge! I can see why you made a ton of food. I hope you have leftovers so you don’t have to cook for a couple days.

  5. We had a whole brass section and timpany (sp??) at my church service. It was gorgeous and included a singing of Hansel’s Alleluiah from the Messiah. The music program at my church is fantastic. The church is known for its music so it’s been a great home for me (it’s Lutheran). Every Sunday school classroom had a professionally trained musician to teach music to the kids, too. So cool! I love watching the boys sing in church. Paul gets very into it.

Ugh. The whole Trump and Christianity combination is so puzzling. I do not know how anyone can say he upholds Christian values. I grew up Catholic and some of the published views of local priests after Trump was elected is what started me down the path of leaving the church. My parents are devote Catholics and voted for Trump. I think in their view they are voting for the party, not the person and really most of their vote is driven by their views on abortion. I am sure I have mentioned before that I used to identify as a republican but left the party when Trump rose to power. What bugs me the most is that he’s so embraced by most in the Republican Party. He’s not someone they are just tolerating. He is totally their guy. It makes me sick.

    1. YES I KNOW. And I think it is all about abortion for a lot of people, which also makes me laugh. You know Trump couldn’t care less about unborn babies- it’s all a political ploy on the part of the republicans. Well, it’s working!
The music at your church sounds fantastic! The church my husband played at (Episcopal) also had timpani (in addition to the two trumpets, horn, trombone and bass trombone) and the choir is made up of professional singers. Pretty fancy! And the also did the Hallelujah chorus, which I always love to hear.

  6. Yes Trump’s message was all over the Internet. UGH!!!!

My hubby doesn’t go to church and his mom is just too old to go anywhere these days.

Glad everything worked out well for you. Live streaming. What did we do before technology?

    1. I know Darlene! Life has really improved with all the technology we have now (as much as we may complain about it).

  7. I sometimes see recipes for pound cake that is made in a Bundt pan and I get very confused, because isn’t a Bundt pan supposed to be for Bundt cake? But I think anything can go in a Bundt pan. We just got a Bundt pan for the first time last year and it is so satisfying to bake something in the pan and then pop it out, looking so pretty.
We had the VP-elect come to a performance last year and the security was a lot. Rightly so of course, but it was fascinating to me everything we had to do to comply with security measures. It must we wild to live in that kind of a bubble.
There weren’t trumpets at ours, but there was a flute and Indian percussion. Apparently the 8:30am mass was doing a special thing for the Bengali population at our church.

    1. Yes, that is different- flute and Indian percussion. I’ll bet it was pretty cool.
I should have mentioned- I did bake the cake for less time than the recipe said, since it seemed like the batter was more spread out in the bundt pan. I think the recipe said 45 minutes and I did 35.

  8. I didn’t hear trumpets coming out of our church. But we have a Catholic church very near to us and yesterday there was a lot going on there because of the poor Pope. That cake looks lovely!

  9. I had no idea that trumpets were so popular at church! We never had them in ours, but I didn’t attend any of the big churches. I just love that both your husband and your son were doing the same thing in different locations on Easter.

Somehow I missed the whole Trump Easter debacle and I’m not about to look it up now! I stayed mostly offline on Sunday and just had a day to myself, which was much needed. The reason I deconstructed my faith in 2016 was because of Trump and the way Christians were following someone like him. The man didn’t even know how to correctly say 2 Corinthians! He’s not a Christian and his message is NOT the message of Jesus. Our society is so broken. 🙁

    1. Yes, he’s SO not a Christian. Not that I care if someone is or isn’t- but I care if someone is a gigantic hypocrite.

  10. i would have stayed home to cook too. Your dinner looks delicious! I bet they enjoyed it very much.
glad to hear the run went well, ready for the race?! what’s your pre race routine?

    1. Coco, I feel like I’m as ready as I”ll ever be! On the morning of the race I’ll eat a little oatmeal and then do a mobility routine as a warmup. Since it’s not like I’ll be taking off fast out of the gate I don’t need to do any kind of running warmup. It’s definitely different than running a fast marathon!

  11. Hi Jenny!

It’s Jeanie from Marmelade Gypsy and thanks for coming over! It was so much fun connecting with Maya and Lisa — and now I know another blogger who lives right in my own city! It was a fabulous afternoon.

I really loved this post on every level (and yes I read the Easter message and yes, it could ruin a whole day.) Your Easter eggs were so pretty and that dinner looked wonderful. (We had ham and it was fine but to be honest, I would have preferred lasagna or tacos!) The Eastre service photos brought back many memories of my church choir days — a big choir, lots of trumpets and instruments. A huge, glorious sound. Lovely to have two musicians in the family. (I have one — a classical guitarist). Good luck with your run this week!

  12. I’m going to focus on that cake that looks just so luscious!!
I’m not a big baker, so I’m in awe of a good bake–especially a vegan one!

    1. And also–I had to go back and look at Paul’s photo after reading your tie comment, and then I could see what you meant! Good mom eye there!
