walkers walk… but runners fly

Life Stuff

SIGH. We are going through an INTERNET TRAGEDY. We realized we had no internet on Thursday night, called AT&T and they came out promptly (?) on Saturday morning. There was an altercation with the neighbor who wouldn’t let them into her yard, then something about a tree, and finally they said they would come back on MONDAY.

On Monday, we got this message:

Wait. What? Did they say 5-10 hours? NO. It’s DAYS, 5-10 days. Seriously??? Keep in mind that without internet, we can’t watch TV. Also, for whatever reason, we’re not able to use our phones as a hotspot. As a result, I’ve been spending waaaay too much time at Starbucks, drinking tea and using their wifi.

“That poor woman!” (the baristas are probably thinking). “Her house must have burned down.” Nope – house is still there, it’s just useless without wifi. I’m kidding- actually the house is kind of peaceful, and I’m getting a lot of reading done. But I DO need wifi for at least some hours of the day.

Let’s move on from this aggravating situation and talk about the race I’ve been vaguely alluding to. To set the stage: Next year, on March 21st to be exact, I will be turning 60. I’ve had it in my mind for a while that it would be “fun” to run 60 miles on or around my 60th birthday. When I searched for ultra races in Florida next year, I found this.

LOOK AT THE DATE. It’s on my actual birthday! There’s a 100 mile option, or a 33 hour option, where you run as many loops as you can/want to in 33 hours. And it’s right here IN MY COUNTY. I could do the timed option, with the goal of completing 60 miles. It was meant to be.

Since it’s almost a year away, this wouldn’t be my “next” race. I’m sure I’ll find some other fun things between now and then. But this will be the big thing I’m aiming for. I’m excited!

Turning our attention back to the present… May is looking like a nice month for us. We have a couple big things, but for the most part all the school concerts are over. School goes until the end of the month, but testing has already started. This week the kids have AICE tests (AICE is kind of like AP, but different. We also have AP classes). They only had to go if they had a test, so today (Tuesday) my daughter only had to go in the afternoon, and tomorrow she doesn’t have to go at all. This is also my day off from work, and I think it goes without saying that I will be enjoying a good hurkle durkle (ha ha… thanks, Elisabeth!)

How is your month shaping up? Do you have any wifi horror stories?

  1. I would be a wreck without Wi-Fi too!
I can’t hotspot my laptop either, and typing anything longer than a grocery list on my phone makes me twitchy.
Thank goodness for Starbucks! When I was in the US last month, I noticed you get free refills, so at least you don’t go broke while squatting for Wi-Fi.

That 60-miler is like the universe is apologizing for the Wi-Fi outage by handing you the most perfectly timed race ever. 😃

    1. Aha! You’re right Catrina, and I accept the universe’s apology. And you’re right- free refills at Starbucks, free wifi= the best deal ever.

  2. Ugggghhhh the internet outage sounds so frustrating! I hope 5-10 days is a drastic underpromise.

Running 60 miles on your 60th sounds like such a terrific challenge! How cool that the exact race you are looking for is on your actual birthday!

  3. Hells yeah to 60 on your 60th! I’m looking forward to living vicariously through your training.

Gah what the freak AT&T??? Is it just you or are your neighbors down as well? WE NEED YOU TO HAVE INTERNET.

May is an exciting month. Both you and me have a kid graduating from school – high school for us, college for you!

    1. Yep, May is graduation month! And the outage affected several people on our street- not sure how many, but definitely not just us.

  4. That internet situation is the pits! Is it still because of the neighbour? Argh. Well, at least you have an excuse to decamp to Starbucks.

    Hooray for hurkle durkling <3

Also, let's stop for a moment and discuss our respective ideas of "fun". Running SIXTY MILES on my birthday. Um, this year on my birthday I hope to start the day by eating a giant slice of cherry cheesecake. I think that's all I need to say about my motivation for exercise.

My inertia aside, this is awesome and clearly meant to be!!!

    1. Ha ha, that’s why I put “fun” in quotes. I can see how some people wouldn’t choose that way to spend a big birthday (or, any birthday at all.)
My hurkle durkle this morning was soooo nice.

  5. That wi-fi thing is terrible. What about people who work from home and require actual internet services? Ridiculous!
I have never heard a more “Jenny” way of celebrating a milestone birthday! It was meant to be!

    1. I know! People really NEED their internet! It’s definitely affected several houses (not sure how many) on our street. And yes… running a long race is definitely a “Jenny” way to celebrate, lol.

  6. Oh, the internet situation is maddening! I work from home, so obviously I “need” internet, but even if I didn’t, I would WANT it! I really hope they are overestimating and it doesn’t take that long. And they should definitely be crediting your account for the days with no service.

  7. The WiFi situation is so frustrating, hopefully it’s fixed in less than 5-10 days. I don’t know how we ever lived without WiFi but it seems impossible now!

I’m so excited for your big birthday race! I did a trail marathon last year that happened to fall on my birthday and it was the best way to celebrate. This year I’m hoping to plan out a solo 33K route for my 33rd birthday!

I just got back from two (very long) days of volunteering at Cocodona 250. There was a lot of wild weather (snow on Monday and rain yesterday) and not a lot of sleep but I earned a bunch of race credits, supported some very inspiring runners and got to see 15 miles of the course while sweeping!
