walkers walk… but runners fly

Looking Back, Looking Forward…

Hello!  It’s Day 3 of NaBloPoMo, and the perfect moment to look back at Halloween.  This was the first year where I wasn’t called upon to go trick-or-treating with either of my kids, and it was bittersweet.  My son sent me a photo of himself on the way to his college party dressed as Harry Potter, and my daughter went ice skating and then trick-or-treating with friends.  I’m glad they’re both having fun (especially my daughter- 7th grade can be such a non-fun year) but I’m really missing these days:

My son’s best friend was like our second son for a few years there.  Yep… I’m ready for grandkids!!!

My husband and I were left at home to hand out candy, and just to make things more festive I made Halloween pizzas.

The one on the right is supposed to be a jack o’lantern… I think these go in the category of “I tried.”

The funny thing is, it was just me and my husband and he couldn’t care less what the pizzas looked like.  He didn’t care if they were skulls, circles, squares, or in the shape of a Christmas tree.  He just wanted to eat.  The dinner was interrupted about 30 times to answer the door for trick-or-treaters, but I loved it.  (Side note!  All the food I show is totally vegan.  For these pizzas I used Violife vegan cheese, and the jack o’lantern has Beyond sausage- that one was for my husband.  I don’t like sausage, vegan or otherwise.)

And speaking of Christmas trees… I’m so excited.  Christmas is officially popping up everywhere, and I love it.  My apologies to anyone who doesn’t celebrate- as a matter of fact, I think people who don’t celebrate Christmas deserve a GIGANTIC apology from the entire universe.  I mean, how frickin’ annoying would it be to be bombarded by music, decorations and general hype, 24/7, for a holiday you don’t even celebrate.  The apology extends to people who did grow up celebrating Christmas but find the holiday sad, or unpleasant for any reason.  There will be a lot about Christmas on this blog, but I understand that it’s not for everyone.

Having said that… I stopped by Crate and Barrel today for a nice dose of the holiday, and I wasn’t disappointed.

It looks so happy and festive!

I was very proud of myself- I didn’t buy anything.  I just wanted to look. After all, we still have Thanksgiving coming up, and I love Thanksgiving.  Yes, I pretty much love all holidays.

But wait… isn’t this supposed to be a running blog?  Well, yes!  I got in an early and dark run this morning, because I had my third shockwave treatment at the podiatrist right after dropping my daughter at school.

The pain machine. Not festive.

To be honest, I haven’t seen much change in my foot since I started treatments, but this was my third session and the doctor said people really start to see improvements between the third and fourth treatment.  We’ll see about that!  I have more of a shockwave update coming up later in the week.  Meanwhile he confirmed that it’s fine to keep running during treatments, so I have no complaints.

Well, I have to go- time to take down my Halloween decorations and put up Thanksgiving ones!  I’ll be back tomorrow.

Are you excited for the holidays?  Dreading it?  Somewhere in between?

  1. Oh, I can imagine it’s bitter-sweet when the kids grow up and you don’t get to see them dress up and go trick-or-treating, but it sounds like you have some awesome memories and still enjoy the holiday your own way! I love the shape of the pizzas! 🙂

I am not quite ready for Christmas yet (although it is my favorite time of the year), but it’s very sweet of you to apologize to all the people who might not get into the Christmas spirit. It must be annoying indeed to endure that for about 2 months of the year.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the shockwave treatment is successful. It can be hard to be patient with this kind of stuff.

    1. Thank you San! My doctor says he has a 100% success rate with this treatment- I hope I don’t turn out to be that one person who ruins his record!

  2. I love that you made Halloween pizza. It’s a nice touch. I remember when I stayed with my US host family they made witch soup. Which was basically just some soup with letter shaped noodles and veggies. Everyone loved it and it was some tradition they kept from a prior exchange student.
I have to agree with San its really nice of you to apologize for the Christmas propaganda one has to endure when not celebrating. I love it myself but I never though about how people must feel about it when not celebrating.

    1. Witch soup- I wish I had known about that when my kids were little- I could have tricked them into eating more vegetables 🙂
I grew up in a town with a large Jewish population- I think that’s why I’m super aware that not everyone is going to love Christmas!

  3. I used to dread the holidays when I was single, because I had a constant low grade depression from Thanksgiving to New Years. Once I met my husband everything changed because we have a ton of family birthdays in December in addition to the holidays so it’s one continuous party and we get extra time with the kids over Christmas break. Our biggest challenge now is that the boys are too old for toys so we don’t have a lot of gift ideas for them this year.

    1. Yes, I totally know that the holidays can be hard for some people. I’m glad you’re in a good situation now and able to enjoy it! I definitely know that phase when they’re too old for toys- it’s a serious challenge. I know it might be a weird suggestion, but do they like legos? My son still likes legos to this day (and he’s almost 19.) They make a lot of advanced sets for older people. Also, video games… but are they all digital downloads now? Kind of hard to wrap and put under the tree. Good luck!

  4. I am absolutely dreading the holidays. It’s always stressful trying to figure out how to split time between our families and now it’s more uncertain because of the covid situation. I just don’t know if we’ll travel or not and I like to have a plan!

On the other hand, I can’t wait to decorate the house and put up lights. I love how pretty everything is in December.

    1. Yes, I know there can be a lot of stress surrounding the holidays. It sounds like if you could just stay home, you would be happy!

  5. We are not ready for Christmas yet but we love this holidays that we spend with our 2 children (male and female) and their families. We ara again thinking about the gifts for our 4 grandsons that they will find under the Christmas tree.
The Halloween pizza is very nice!

    1. Ha, you are a good friend to compliment my pizzas! I’m definitely not ready for Christmas yet, but I enjoy this time of year where I’m looking forward to it. Glad you enjoy the holiday with your children and grandchildren!
