walkers walk… but runners fly

Midweek Mashup

Oh, hi there!  Is it just me, or does it feel like a weird week?  Maybe it’s because of the time change, or maybe it’s because my daughter has spring break so we’re out of our normal school routine.  Whatever it is, I’m embracing it.  It feels like a slight pause in the middle of regular life, and a pause can be nice.  Here’s what’s going on right now:

Still Reading…

The Choice, a memoir by Edith Eva Eger.  Her story continues to be fascinating.  After being liberated from the nazis, she came to America where- guess what?- life was no picnic either. People were SO MEAN to the immigrants!  It’s heartbreaking- why couldn’t people just be nice?  Of course, no one knew she was an Auschwitz survivor, but that’s just a reminder to always be extra kind to everyone you meet- you never know what they’re going through.  This is an amazing book.

Dreaming about…

A trip this summer.  In The Choice, Edith tells how her family moved from Baltimore- where they were treated terribly- to El Paso, Texas.  She describes El Paso as having a more European feel, and says it was a city welcoming to immigrants.

Until this year, Texas was a state I never thought about visiting.  But now that my son goes to school there, I’m much more interested in it.  Now I’m finding myself googling “Things to do in El Paso” and “Vegan restaurants in El Paso.”  Yes, there are vegan food options, and there’s lots of museums, including a Holocaust museum.  Who knew?

My family has no idea I’m secretly plotting a trip to El Paso, and frankly I doubt it’ll go over well.  After our trip to Austin last summer, my daughter announced she never wants to go to Texas in the summer again.  So… we’ll see.  I can dream though.

Planning…

A St Patrick’s Day dinner.  Every year I make soda bread, and we never like it.  Then when March rolls around again I start seeing recipes for soda bread and think “that sounds good!”  So I’ll probably be making soda bread, ha ha (“live and don’t learn” is one of my mottos.) I’m considering a vegan Irish stew to go with it, and am contemplating drinking a beer.  I LOVE beer, but I rarely drink it anymore.  I would probably enjoy the first three sips, and then feel tipsy and bloated.  Maybe I’ll have an Olipop root beer instead.

Enjoying…

Some extra yoga this week.  My left hip is feeling achy- not sure how that happened.  It didn’t hurt when I ran today (phew) but during the rest of the day it’s letting me know it’s not happy.  So… yoga!  Last week I only did one class, but now that my son is gone and I have my yoga studio back, I’ve been doing yoga every day.  My whole body feels so good after a yoga class.

And finally…

I’m sleeping in tomorrow!  I don’t have work, it’s not a running day, and my daughter doesn’t have school, so I can sleep till 8:00.  Sometimes I have trouble sleeping at night, but I never have trouble sleeping from 6am-8am (the hours I’m usually up and running around.). I’m going to enjoy those two extra hours to the fullest!

How about you?  Does this week feel different to you?

Are you planning a trip this summer?

Any plans for St. Patrick’s Day?

  1. Being extra kind to people because we don’t know what they’re going through is great advice.

Two years ago, we met a 35-year old woman. She was civil, but a bit distant and stand-offish.
Two years later, we met her again. She was a completely different person – outgoing, happy and welcoming.
I then learned that when we first met her, she had just been through a traumatic breakup and was still digesting it.
You never know what people are going through.

    1. Catrina, that is so, so true. And that’s a perfect example. A good reminder to be kind, even when people are off-putting. They may be the ones who need it the most.

  2. I just can’t get into yoga unless I go to a live class and I haven’t done that in a while.

Sleeping in… what’s that? I often have to get up earlier on the weekend for a run!!

After losing a hour of sleep on Sunday, I felt fine… but felt really off Monday and Tuesday… weird.

I love corned beef and soda bread but no, no plans this year.

This summer? We go boating on the weekend. I have a NEW SUP to try. Hope to do more hiking and my job may take to NYC. no vacations.

    1. Your summer sounds really fun even without a specific vacation!
I took live yoga classes years ago, and I want to do it again. Peloton is just so convenient… but I know it would be helpful to get some feedback from a teacher.

  3. Thanks for recommending The Choice. My best friend from college is Jewish, and her maternal grandmother lost a side of her family in the Holocaust. I feel a certain allegiance to her faith, having been friends with her for 30+ years, and just when I think I’ve seen it all, another Holocaust book/show/movie, etc. will show me something else. Ugh. I totally agree with kindness to everyone…I just cannot fathom when people are rude or snarky to others. Not sure what there is to gain from it (other than a “release” from their own problems or frustrations). My week is weird because I’m kind of on house arrest with Max…keeping him immobile is NOT easy, and I can’t go for a run or a walk (outdoors) unless I arrange for someone to babysit him because the hubby’s had evening meetings all week. ( I know, first world probs…)

    1. Okay, that is a weird week! Poor Max… I hope that all ends soon.
The Choice is really riveting, and only the first quarter of it is about her experiences during the war. She had a lot to work through for the whole rest of her life!

  4. Oh, the night before you can sleep in is so INDULGENT, isn’t it? I hope it’s absolutely wonderful.

It’s been a weird week here, too. My husband and I have had a lot of things to do in the evenings, but they are opposite evenings of the other person, so I feel like I haven’t really seen my husband since he got back into town on Sunday!

    1. Thanks- it’s funny you put it like that because it’s really the night before the big sleep-in that’s the best. I did enjoy those two extra hours!

  5. well I am all for sleeping in you totally deserve it! Not a fan of soda bread either ha. It is kind of bland right? I have 2 quick trips to Texas this summer and not sure how I feel about them yet. Sounds very hot and humid! Have a great rest of your week

    1. Ooh! Where in Texas? It will be hot, and part of Texas is humid and part of it is the desert. Either way… heat. I think a “quick” trip is perfect!

  6. This HAS felt like a weird week. We just got home from a little “March Break” (my kiddos are out of school this week) trek to visit family and it’s Thursday and feels like it should be Saturday and I’m tired and can’t tell if it’s from DST or vacation!
So yes…everything is a little topsy turvy. Not in a bad way, but things just feel very out of routine!
I made soda bread once and it was a total flop; I haven’t been brave enough to attempt a repeat…

    1. Yes, having the kids out of school definitely throws everything off- and for you, traveling. It’s nice to have a break but also nice to get back into a routine.

  7. If I sleep to 6, it’s a really good day. But I also go to bed early. I actually generally sleep well.

I understand your daughter’s feelings about TX & Summer, but seriously, I’d it that different from FL in the Summer?

My husband is down with any kind of bread.

Not sure when our next trip is, but we’re in looking around phase. We tend to go to,places off season since my husband doesn’t like crowds.

    1. Texas is about the same as Florida in the summer- but in the summer here we’re usually inside in the AC, not walking around sightseeing. At least Texas in the summer is off season- we would avoid crowds.

  8. I hope you get to go to El Paso this summer and explore Texas! It’s nice that you feel a connection to the state now that your son goes to school there.

I am hoping my family will be able to visit this summer and we can take a little roadtrip. Fingers crossed!

    1. Yes, I hope you can see your family! I know it’s been a long time. I’m hoping to see my sister for the first time in two years.

  9. Even if it’s not this summer, I do hope you can take a trip to El Paso someday soon since you seem to really want to go! I’m sure there are some great vegan restaurants there, too!

I love how you try to make every holiday special in some way! That’s something I know your kids will look back on with fondness.
