walkers walk… but runners fly

October Ultimate Coffee Date!

Hooray!  It’s the first Friday of the month, which means I’m linking up with Coco and Deborah for the Ultimate Coffee Date.  It’s obviously time to get out the Halloween mugs.  Pour yourself a spooky beverage and join me!

The first thing I would tell you over coffee is, tomorrow is my son’s senior recital.

We can’t be there in person but will be able to watch it via livestream.  I’m dealing with a cocktail of emotions here: disbelief that he’s a SENIOR in college, nervous for him (I mean, I’m sure he’s well-prepared and will do well, but a mom has to worry), sad that his time at Baylor is coming to an end, and of course- so, so proud of him.  The baby whose nickname was “Li’l Sumo” is now a MAN.

So what else is on tap for the weekend?  My husband and I are planning a little at-home “Oktoberfest.”  I’m not quite sure what that will entail, other than beer of course.  My husband is very enthusiastic about the beer- “Let’s make it really cold!  We can get a bucket and put all the beers in it with some ice!”  WHOA THERE.  I’m not sure how many beers he plans on drinking, but my limit is probably 1.5.  We’ll have to have something to eat as well- I’m looking at this website with vegan Oktoberfest recipes.

In other news, I got a letter saying that my request to postpone jury duty has been granted.  PHEW!!!  Interestingly, I’ve talked to three people who told me when they get a jury summons, they just throw it away.  They figure since it’s not registered mail, no one can ever prove they got it.  Huh!  Now I’m feeling virtuous about getting out of jury duty the “right” way.  Or, maybe I’m just a fool.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who complimented me on fixing my blog.  Unfortunately I did NOT fix it (yet) and the only way it looks “normal” is if I include lots of photos (to make the post long.) Here’s one of me in my element…

Contacts out, pajamas on, and both cats by my side! This is the life.

Spotted at Michael’s- regretting that I didn’t buy it!

Spotted at Target- didn’t buy, and no regrets. I like popcorn and pumpkin spice, but not together.

What would you tell me over coffee?  Do you have any plans for the weekend?

  1. Congrats to Paul, what a proud moment! You’ll be saving the poster, yes?
And I love the cozy picture of you with the kitties! It’s a very different vibe from the running pix!
I’m headed to Utah for a hiking trip this weekend (we’re on Fall Break) and I’m really looking forward to it… But also, every time I travel without my kids, I’m afraid that something will happen to me and my kids will end up orphans (LOL-sob)

    1. Oh, I’m SO ENVIOUS. Utah is my dream destination- it looks so, so beautiful. But yes- I have that thought when my husband and I travel together, what if something happens (IT WON’T.).
I only have a photo of the poster- but my son has some actual posters at school. I’ll ask him to bring one home for me. Thanks for making me think of that!

  2. Yay for technology problems that can be fixed by adding cat pictures to the end of your posts! And huh it never would have occurred to me to just not answer a jury summons. I feel like I’m the kind of person who would get caught if I didn’t respond – I feel like there would be follow up and yes you can miss one piece of mail but not a lot of pieces of mail. So yay for following the system.

Congrats on Paul’s recital. It’s a Big Deal. I have no words.

Enjoy Oktoberfest! I can’t wait to hear about it.

    1. Thanks Birchie! Yes, I guess problems that can be fixed by adding cat pictures aren’t that severe.
I know- I would also be nervous about ignoring a jury summons. But apparently they really won’t come after you???

  3. Gooooooo Paul! That’s amazing. And wow – the years fly by. From me on the outside looking in it feels impossible that he’s a senior.

Love the fall pictures; you do the season proud 🙂

  4. SENIOR RECITAL?!?! How cool! We are leaning into fall this weekend with apple picking, etc, so that’s our Oktoberfest, I guess. I LOLed at the ice bucket and 1.5 beers.

  5. I also can’t believe your son is a senior already! I’m sure he will blow you away with his recital — I love that photo of him!

I also love the photo of you in your PJs. 😉

You know what’s missing from your weekend plans? Lederhosen!v 😉

    I am planning a low-key weekend ahead of a high-stress work week ….

    1. True, I need some Oktoberest apparel! But I’ll probably just be wearing pajamas, ha ha.
Yay for a low-key weekend- boo for a high-stress work week. I hope you can relax and enjoy the next couple days.

  6. Oh, I would *never* be able to throw out the summons! I would worry so much about getting in trouble for that. Despite my jury duty PTSD, I can’t imagine just ignoring it and hoping for the best! (I’m also a terrible liar, so what would I saw when I was caught??) My mind is blown that you know multiple people who did that. Perhaps it is common? Anyway, I’m glad yours got postponed.

  7. Good luck to Paul, I’m sure he’ll do amazing!

I hope you enjoy your Oktoberfest— my parents are planning one in a few weeks and I’m not a beer drinker but my mom is making a vegan beer cheese with pretzels and I’m all about that! As for the pumpkin spice popcorn, I’ve been intrigued by it because I like other flavors from that brand but not sure if it’s worth trying.

My weekend plans include one last “long” run before my race and getting all packed for my trip next week. I can’t believe it’s almost here!

  8. I love your enthusiasm for Octborerfest! Also a popcorn fan but meh not pumpkin spice on popcorn. The did have a spicy flavor that was good! Is is amazing how fast the kids grow up! How did that senior year sneak up so quickly!>?

  9. I’m such a rule follower that I can’t fathom throwing away a jury summons!! I am glad you got out of it, though!! Hope they don’t come knocking again!

Good luck to Paul! I am sure he will do great but I bet it’s nerve wracking. I am glad you can stream his performance. You must be so very proud!!

It’s going to be summer-like tomorrow so we are going out to a friend’s house that is on a lake for one last summer hang. Phil will help them take their docks out which is a big job. But we are kicking off our weekend with Paul’s first chess club meeting at school today. I love that his school has activities like this as that is more his jam than athletics… he will still try different sports but I think he will be like me and excel more in academic pursuits.

  10. Pumpkin spice…popcorn???? Hard pass! I’m the same way with beer. I pretty much can only drink beer if I’ve had another beverage prior (and am not quite myself, if you know what I mean, LOL). A pic popped up, from a year ago, where Jim handed me his beer “to hold for a minute” and I remember finishing it before he got back (oops).

  11. Good luck to your son. Very exciting.

I would totally buy that popcorn.. glad I didn’t see it.

a 5k and 18 miles on my plate this weekend.

  12. Wow, senior recital – a big milestone. I can imagine you are feeling all the emotions. As a parent of little kids though, I always wonder what adults they’ll become- so very cool you’re at the stage where you get to see. 🙂
I’m just amazed how many “fall” decorations there are in North America- this is NOT a thing in Australia. We of course have Halloween decorations, but not fall specifically. Our countries are so similar in many ways, and different in others.
This weekend includes a shopping trip with me and my Mum – looking forward to it.

  13. Aww, yay for your son!! I’m so glad the internet exists — it makes it easier to still be able to participate/support even if it can’t be in person! This brings back memories — I miss playing piano! <3

The kitties look so content! :]

  14. I love your comfy picture! I think my favorite outfit is sweat pants, or the equivalent. It is only too bad that it is not really kosher for a grown woman to be sporting them outside. I mean, don’t get me wrong, SOME grown women do, but that is not really my style. My grandmother would roll over in her grave! Also the cats, yes please! I love a good lap cat. My gato used to love to sit right next to me, as close as possible, and that was perfect, as I often had a book or computer on my lap (I studied for the CFA for four years)!

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I a fan of pumpkin in its true form, but am not a huge fan of the “natural flavor” variety, as in, the kind that is probably not real pumpkin. Give me pumpkin bread, or pretty much any pumpkin dessert, or pumpkin curry, the kind with the actual vegetable, but please do not give me a PSL or that popcorn. I want real pumpkins to be harmed in the making of the product!

  15. Your son is already a senior? I still remember when you were writing about his first year and driving with him to help him move.

Now, you left me thinking about the jury duty letter. It’s been years since I’ve had to report, but have received letters saying I might have to show up.

  16. Omg how exciting for your son and all of you! Congratulations! I can’t believe he’s a senior either. I still feel like my oldest just graduated and it’s coming up on 2 years. It all goes by so fast.
I last did jury duty when my kids were very young. I recall trying and failing to get out of it. I know I had to get child care. I got to the part where the lawyers questioned me. Thank heavens I was not selected. Enjoy the beer-full Oktoberfest! Haha!
