Well, I finished this book:
I liked it, but didn’t LOVE it. It was interesting, complicated, and weird. In the afterword, Turton explains that he’s set himself the task of writing each of his books in a completely different style and genre (he says the next one will probably be a contemporary thriller.) I liked this one, and I liked The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, so I’ll probably read his next book as well.
Since this is a busy week with visitors in town, I went with some light reading:
It’s kind of weird to describe a book about a woman who may or may not have murdered her best friend as “light,” but it’s easy reading and funny. I’ve only just started it, but I think it will be an enjoyable read for the week.
Let’s talk about EATING! We’ve had some delicious meals lately! Actually, now that I think about it, they were all today. First up was a brunch with Nora’s Just Egg Quiche, bagels, and (not pictured) fruit. And mimosas. JUST KIDDING. I don’t even like mimosas, and I can never understand the concept of boozing it up in the morning. We saved that for later in the day.
Later, my son and I made epic burritos for dinner! He made the “meat” from Impossible ground, and we made lime cilantro rice, refried beans (well, those were from a can), guacamole, mango salsa, and a cabbage slaw. This meal was SO GOOD.
But we didn’t stop there! For dessert I made Nora’s Best Vegan Cheesecake. It came out really well, and everyone loved it.
Since that was a big day of cooking, Wednesday we’re eating out. Pizza party coming up on Thursday!
What are you reading?
Do you like mimosas at brunch?

I don’t drink during the day, or even on non-weekend evenings, but when we are on a beach vacation and it’s all-inclusive, well, all bets are off. I have been known to enjoy a mimosa or two! I had a pineapple one on our last vacation and it was divine.
Actually, a pineapple mimosa sounds good! But I think I would have to take a nap right after brunch.
Your meals look so good, I wanna come over for those burritos!
I don’t really like mimosas because they make me sleepy and that’s not what I want in the morning! I do like to have brunch with drinks every once in awhile but usually wait until closer to noon to have it because it feels weird to drink any earlier than that.
Ashley, you would like the burritos! If you’re ever in South Florida, you’re invited over for dinner.
I wouldn’t say no to a mimosa at brunch but wouldn’t say it’s a drink I love. I am not a big fan of orange juice. It’s fine but if I never had a glass of orange juice again that would be fine too?
The burrito meal looks amazing! Yum!! That is my kind of meal! And brunch sounded delicious too. I am glad you are giving yourself a break and will go out to eat today. It can be a lot of work to make meals for guests. The pizza night sounds great, though! I bet it’s so fun to be together with your sister though. I don’t get to see my younger sister often so when I do see her, it’s such a joyful experience to catch up and talk in person. We are not phone people so we text to stay in touch.
I am reading ‘After Annie’ by Anna Quindlen (author of every last one). It’s about a family whose mom suddenly passes from an aneurysm leaving behind 4 kids ages 13 and under. The oldest kind of becomes a proxy for their mom. It’s very character driven so I don’t know if I would recommend it for you, but I am appreciating it (enjoying it feels weird to say given the heavy topic). I plan to read ‘listen for the lie’. NGS and Stephany raved about the audiobook so I am tempted to listen but I prefer to use my limited listening time for podcasts. But I am tempted to make exception for this book!
I know- I remember one of them (I think it was Engie) especially recommended listening to this one on audio, but I didn’t take her suggestion. Like you, I like to podcasts for my listening time. I can assure you that’s it’s still good in print! And, that Anna Quindlen book- it’s so funny because one of her other books, Every Last One, is one of my favorite books ever, but I’ve read a couple other ones where it feels like not much happens (which is my way of saying, it’s character-driven.) But I’ll bet it’s good because she’s such a good writer.
My sister and I aren’t phone people either (or at least, I’m not) so we keep in touch through text as well. It’s definitely fun to talk face to face!!!
Agreed, I don’t see the value (or purpose) of boozing in the AM…unless I’m in a football stadium parking lot 🙂 Those pineapple mimosas, mentioned above, sound very tasty!
Ha ha, I don’t think i’ve ever boozed it up in a football stadium parking lot in the AM… apparently I’ve been living a sheltered life!
Nom nom! Burrito night looks epic and I can’t wait to hear about pizza night.
Sigh, booze before dinner is so overrated. It’s a nice idea, but then you’re just tired for the rest of the day.
i agree- it sounds fun but then it always backfires.
All the food looks terrific; I bet everyone who was lucky enough to be there enjoyed it!
I’m a big, big fan of Impossible–their “sausage” is really tasty too.
I eat cheese, and cannot believe that cheesecake is vegan–it set so well!
Just an amazing food roundup!
Thank you Maya! The funny thing is, I don’t actually like Impossible meat because it tastes too meaty- I put a different tempeh-based meat on my burritos and everyone else thought I was crazy.
I just finished a really boring on my Kindle and have started a fluffy romance novel to get that bad taste out of my mouth and I’m listening to a Ken Follett audiobook. I’m really loving it!
I haven’t read any Ken Follett in a LONG time-I read a couple of his books years ago and loved them.
I just finished After Annie… it grew on me but is sad. I loved the Mystery Guest by the same author as The Maid… it’s a mystery. And the new Danielle Steele book was pretty good.
I read The Maid but had heard the second book wasn’t as good. But it must be pretty good if you loved it!
Ooooh I love burritos! Yum!
Yes, I am a mimosa fan. I love a cocktail, and if it’s a breakfast cocktail it should have orange juice in it.
I really want to read that Turton book!
So funny — I recently listened to Listen for the Lie, and really enjoyed it and have since recommended it… but I CANNOT REMEMBER ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Your description of it made me do a double take, and now I’m questioning if I really did read it?! (I did; I marked it as read on Goodreads.) That makes me feel kind of bad, but maybe that means I’ll be able to enjoy it again someday.
Ha ha… I’ll write more of a review of it next week, and I’m sure at that point you’ll be able to remember if you read it or not.
what a great spread of food! our family will love the burrito spread. maybe we will try this weekend!
The great thing about burritos is you can customize them- my daughter is pretty picky so she made her own.
Oh, the burrito meal looks delicious. I haven’t had a mimosa in forever, probably because I haven’t been to brunch in forever LOL
San, maybe you need to go to brunch soon and have mimosas! Sounds like you’re due.
You can make me a mimosa any morning, afternoon or evening! 😉 I really do love mimosas with Prosecco or any other wine/champagne. But I never make them :/ I love the food spread!
I read and loved The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle but haven’t read anything else by Stuart Turton. I need to get on that!
I just finished Listen for the Lie and it was SO GOOD. Funny, too! I laughed out loud several times!
Listen for the Lie comes up again and again here in blogosphere. My library doesn’t cary the audio but Since you like the book maybe I do that.
The food looks amazing. I want those burritos please. Yum.
