walkers walk… but runners fly

Reading and Eating

Well, I’m nearing the end of Winter of the World.  There’s a quote on the cover that says “This book is truly epic… The reader will probably wish there was a thousand more pages.”  Well, yes I do!!!  Luckily there’s one more book in the trilogy, Edge of Eternity.  I’ll be starting that one next.

Last week I went to Barnes and Noble to look for some of the books Allison mentioned in her guest post on Engie’s blog. Guess how many they had?  ZERO.  Darn!  Barnes and Noble doesn’t have a very big horror section.

I still had fun though.  I sat in the cafe and read this magazine…

And I found a planner I love!  Well, I love the cover.

The inside might not be quite what I’m looking for, but I love the cat so much (the top of the cat’s head and eyes are peeping up on top of the pages as well) that I might try to make it work.  I decided to think it over a little before I buy it.  (Should you get a planner just because you love the cover?  Probably not.)

Now I’m excited because tomorrow (my day off) I’m going to a used bookstore!  I’ve never been there and didn’t even know it existed until recently, but it’s not far from me.  I hope I walk out with an armful of books.

Okay, eating.  Remember the grand plan of prepping ingredients on Sunday for a week’s worth of bowl dinners?  Well, the last two Sundays I worked.  Not a lot, but just enough that I didn’t ALSO feel like doing meal prep.  Somehow we got through last week anyway.  And, since this Sunday was the start of Pumpkin Palooza, I made my favorite Pumpkin Baked Ziti (recipe from Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Veganomicon.)

Ziti, roasted cauliflower and a salad. And wine! Yum.

My sister and I were commenting how the orange and brown color combination looks so pretty now- but once Thanksgiving is over, it looks drab.  When I take down the fall decorations and put up all the sparkly, colorful Christmas things, I can’t believe how dreary orange and brown look.  But for now, I’m loving it!

Lastly- pumpkin oatmeal for breakfast!  I just make my regular oatmeal, put in a couple dollops of pumpkin, and all the pumpkin spices (don’t forget cloves- very important!)

I’m not quite sure what we’ll have for dinner the rest of the week (leftover ziti will be making an appearance) but we’ll get through it.

Do you like used bookstores?  What are you reading now?

Weekly Rundown- Everything is Awesome!

I don’t want to say this injury is behind me, because that would be tempting fate a little too much.  But let’s just say “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie has been running through my head, and life seems good!  I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown.  Here’s how it all played out… Sunday I walked one mile and ran 3. Everything felt good! Monday I did lower body strength at home, including single leg exercises and squats.  One of the (few) things I’m proud of from my work this summer is the progress I made in the one leg sit-to-stand.  It’s one of the foundation exercises on Sally McRae’s app and also one of the hip stability exercises from Brad Beer’s book.  You start sitting on a chair or bench, and stand up using one leg, then sit back down, stand up again, etc. only on one leg.  When I first started I could only do five reps on each leg- now I can do 36 reps!!!  At least something has improved. I also did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout..  I’m really tired of it by now! Tuesday I walked 3 miles… … and then did a different core workout!  I did Caroline Girvan’s Standing Abs Workout, and I liked it.  At least, I liked doing something different. Wednesday Again, I walked one mile and ran 3.  Still feeling good! Thursday I did my single leg exercises, and another core workout.  This one Engie recommended, MadFit Standing Core Workout..  I liked this one too!  Then I had time for 20 minutes of walking. At night we watched the Dolphins game, which was a complete fiasco.  We lost, and our quarterback got ANOTHER CONCUSSION.  The poor guy will be out for… ever?  The rest of the season?  I feel really bad for him, and now our season is a shambles after only the second game. Friday Gym day!  It was a very squat-focused workout, because I skipped deadlifts.  My low back is nagging at me again, and deadlifts sadly make it worse.  After squats and Bulgarian split squats I did some core (abs and low back machines.) At night I planned to go to our high school football game, but it rained so much that the band couldn’t play (so I didn’t go.)  They did manage to play in the rain and our team won!  This was our homecoming, and last year’s homecoming was completely rained out.  September outdoor events just shouldn’t be a thing in South Florida. Saturday This was a big day- I walked one mile and ran 4!!!  I’m getting there! At night we watched the Baylor game.  FINALLY.  A game where it didn’t rain, no one got injured, and we WON!  At least the football week ended on a high note. Sunday Off!  Sleeping in and waffles will be involved (obviously.) So, it was a good week.  Moving forward, I’m going to cautiously try running every other day.  Running every third day was great to get me back from this injury, but I can’t do that forever! How was your week?  Were there any moments where you sang “Everything is Awesome?” Top photo by Stainless Images on Unsplash

Friday Coffee Date!

Hey, it’s Friday!  Pour yourself a beverage in your favorite fall mug (wait- you do have one, right?) and join me. Let’s talk about the weekend!  Tonight is another high school football game, and I will be there.  The last two weeks have been away games, so I’ve missed going.  But you know what that means- it’s time for Homecoming!  My daughter decided to go to the dance with a group of friends, and we started thinking about what she would wear.  But let’s back up for a moment… The high school concert band uniform is tuxes for the boys and long black dresses for girls.  When my daughter was a freshman last year, she said she would prefer to wear a tux. Now, I wasn’t entirely opposed to this, but I just preferred that she wear a dress… like all the other girls?  I told her that whatever she decided to do was fine, but there’s a reason boys usually wear suits and girls usually wear dresses.  Girls are more curvy, so dresses flatter them more.  My daughter is very curvy, and I thought a tux would just make her look kind of big all over. She decided to wear the dress, and I thought she looked lovely!  Then I was telling my friend about how well I handled that situation, and she thought I was VERY WRONG.  Why, she asked, did it matter how she looked?  Why did I make that the most important thing? Er- good question.  When it was time for New Year’s, my daughter wanted to wear a suit to the party.  I agreed immediately, and she actually looked kind of cute (not that it mattered!) Later I asked how she liked wearing the suit, and she said “I loved it.  I felt really confident.”  Okay then. Back to Homecoming!  My daughter said she wanted to wear a suit, and we got to work on her outfit (I was tasked with finding her some new pants, which was surprisingly hard.) Then yesterday she went to the mall to help her friend find a dress, and came home with… a dress, which she is now wearing to Homecoming. You guys, I can’t keep up!  Girls are so hard!!!  Boys are so. much. easier. Anyway, while my daughter is at the dance on Saturday night, my husband and I will be watching the Baylor game!  I have a fun fall-themed dinner planned, with some new things to sample from Trader Joe’s. One last thing- I’ve submitted my request for postponement of jury duty.  Weirdly, the request had to be submitted in writing, and by that I mean I had to write a letter and mail it through the U.S. postal service.  When was the last time you did that? I was so confused.  I couldn’t even really remember how to do it.  When I printed out my letter, my husband looked at it and said “You didn’t leave room for your signature.”  Oh yeah- I totally forgot.  Then I had to find an envelope and a stamp, and take it to the mailbox… I mean, don’t we have more modern methods of communication nowadays?  Anyway, I hope it gets there, and I hope I get my postponement (actually, I’m hoping they forget all about me, but if worst comes to worst I’ll take a postponement.) That’s it for this week! When was the last time you mailed a letter?  I don’t mean a greeting card or postcard, but like an official letter?   Do you think I was wrong to encourage my daughter to wear a dress?  How much does appearance matter? What are your plans for the weekend? Top photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash

Reading and Eating

I finished Winter of the World, which will from now on be referred to simply as WOW.  It was so, so good, and I’m getting ready to start the third book in the trilogy!  It starts in 1961, where the second book left off. But let’s go back to last week- I had my trip to the used bookstore.  It was everything I hoped it would be (look away, Engie!  I’ve discovered that Engie does NOT like used bookstores!) As I hoped, I did leave with a stack of books. Some classic murder mysteries- I can never resist- and more Ken Follett.  I have no plans to read The Pillars of the Earth anytime soon, but I know I’ll read it eventually, and I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to get a used copy in good condition. Eating!  Once again, I did not do any meal prep on Sunday so we’re limping through the week.  The good news is, I think I’m training my husband and daughter to expect less and less in the dinner department.  I mean- we do eat.  It’s just not fancy. Sunday morning I made gluten-free pumpkin pancakes from Running on Real Food.  First, let’s look at a picture from the website: And here’s, ahem, mine. All that garnish aside, mine look really weird.  But they did taste good!  Chickpea flour is my new favorite flour.  By the way, if you’re making pumpkin baked good this fall, don’t forget the formula to make them really flavorful- double the amount of pumpkin spice, and add a pinch of cloves.  And whatever you do, do NOT forget the salt! What are you reading now? Top photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash

Getting Back on Track

I wrote in Sunday’s post that I’ve been feeling like my life is just a little off track.  Then I looked around my house and realized one of the reasons is that I’ve been half-assing my beloved Pumpkin Palooza.  I had some, but not all, of my fall decorations out, and then a summer-y wreath was lying on the table.  Furthermore, I hadn’t had one special meal or snack to celebrate the start of football season. This was all wrong!  I needed to rectify the situation right away.  I lit a fall candle… …and got out all the rest of my fall decorations while watching the first half of the Dolphins game.  At halftime I put together a little charcuterie board… …and then we watched the Dolphins come from behind to win the game.  Fall is back on track! Let’s move on to running.  SIGH.  So far, my calf seems to be better, but my race plans are in tatters.  Back in May, I signed up for a race on November 9th.  It’s a trail race, and you run as far as you can in a certain amount of time.  I chose the 12 hour option. Hahahahaha.  Even if everything goes perfectly from now on, I’ll have no business running a 12 hour race in two months.  I guess the good news is, it’s a 4.5 mile loop that you run over and over again.  I can go and just run a couple loops.  That would be kind of sad- but maybe less sad than not going at all?  I’ve already paid for the race so if I can run at all, I’ll probably go. Now let’s deal with this jury summons.  I know it’s our civic duty, but I think it’s unfair that it creates more of a financial hardship for some people than others.  Additionally, some people never get called for jury duty, and some people get called all the time!  Luckily I’ve come up with a great solution. My plan is, all registered voters would be required to submit a form every five years, indicating the time they would like to do their jury duty.  That way, people would be able to pick a time that works best with their work schedule, and have time in advance to arrange for childcare, etc. Of course, if everyone chose July of 2027 it would be a fiasco.  But I have solutions for that too!  People who are retired, independently wealthy, or who have a very flexible work schedule could volunteer to be “swing jurors,” willing to be called at any time.  There could be incentives for people who serve in months like December (which I’m guessing would be the least popular)- like if you sit on a jury in December, you’re exempt for the rest of your life. I’ll be submitting my request for a postponement- do you think I should include my detailed plan for an overhaul of the entire system?  Haha, that might get me excused permanently (“Don’t let this woman near the courthouse- she’s obviously a troublemaker!”) Anyway, I’m starting to feel a little better.  As long as I can continue to run and nothing else goes wrong, I think I’m back on track. How do you like my plan?  Would you volunteer to be a “swing juror?” Top photo by Redd F on Unsplash

  1. Whoa–you weren’t joking about going all out for pumpkins :)! The ziti sounds delish…
I’m taking a break before I start _Edge of Eternity_.
The planner you loved reminds me of a notebook my kiddo loves that I found in a bookstore (It’s based on a Miyazaki character–Jiji in Kiki’s Delivery Service.)
    https://www.amazon.com/Kikis-Delivery-Service-Plush-Journal/dp/1452171246/ref=asc_df_1452171246/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=692875362841&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3029264138741062462&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1019499&hvtargid=pla-2281435178098&psc=1&mcid=c434b10af57d3cc998200999e8829725&hvocijid=3029264138741062462-1452171246-&hvexpln=73

    1. That planner is cute! And- I think my daughter might really like it. Maybe I’ll bookmark it as a Christmas present for her.
I’ll probably read one or two short books before starting Edge- but I’ll start it soon. Right now I don’t want Winter of the World to end!

  2. I haven’t been into a real book store for so long. The pleasure of buying on the spot is long gone. I have so many books to read in my kindle now. Currently for non fiction I’m reading life council about friendship, and for fiction I’m ready Stephen King’s short story, you like it darker. I read the first story and like it so I’ll keep going.
I add pumpkin to my oatmeal often but rarely add any spices because I usually add protein power which comes with flavor. next time i’ll add some pumpkin spice, i’m sure it will be so good.

  3. A used bookstore sounds like a fabulous idea! A bit like a library only you get to keep the books as long as you want against a small fee.
Do you have any free mini-libraries near you? You know, the informal ones that pop up on the side of the road? I often look through these, I recently found “The Help” there.

  4. Pumpkin baked ziti sounds so good! It’s nice to have some savory pumpkin options so I will have to try that this fall.

I definitely choose planners based on their covers, and the one you found is really cute!

  5. Yep I see you and I hear you on the meal prep. It’s great when it happens, but I found that too often it was like “yay it’s the weekend! I get to spend hours grocery shopping. And then hours cooking! Wait, where did my weekend go????” But oh my oh my I want to get in on some of that pumpkin pasta action!

For reading I’ve come to the conclusion that I just need to binge the rest of the Linda Castillo books so that I can move on with my life. I have a few other books on hold on Libby, but it’s going to take a while for them to come in.

I love a good used bookstore – have fun and I hope you find your armful of books!

    1. I think Nora has a pumpkin pasta recipe- if I remember correctly, it’s not baked, but instead a creamy sauce. I”ll make that one too this month.
Oh yes, Linda Castillo- it’s only a matter of time before I continue on with that series. The first one was so good!

  6. I rarely go to bookstores since I do not buy books for myself but I like to browse bookstores to get ideas of what to read although my TBR list is already so long that I really do not need to browse and add to it! I don’t love how used bookstores smell, though!!

I’m currently reading “Humor Me” by Cat Shook which is sort of a coming of age story. I was a bit annoyed with the character at first but then she made a better decision at about the halfway point and I’m liking the character much more! This is her sophomore novel.

    1. I love browsing in bookstores, but I have no business buying new books- a used store is the perfect solution for me. This one didn’t have a weird smell, at least I didn’t notice it. Maybe other people would though.

  7. I LOVE used bookstores! The smell! The possibilities! The thought of all the other people who have read these books! The sense of reading as a communal activity. I’m more likely to buy books from a used bookstore.
Our library system runs two used bookstores and I always go there before a trip to pick up booka for me and the kids- that way if something sets lost or destroyed I only out $2 or so. (And then when we are done, we take the books back! I think of it as a book rental system 😅)
There is a used bookstore in DC that is in an old house and it has the funniest signs- things like “Poetry is located in the bathroom.”
I can’t wait to see your book haul.
Currently I’m reading Homegoing and You Dreamed of Empires.

    1. Ha, so you’re treating the library used bookstore kind of like a library! It makes sense- paying $2 is better than paying for a lost library book (which, AHEM, does happen with kids.)

  8. I do not care for used bookstores. The smell, the mold, the sad discarded books! I find them to be a real downer and try to avoid them if possible.

I am not willing to put out fall decorations yet. I was actually a bit confused why you were talking up pumpkin so much and then I remembered that it’s September. I’m obviously in denial about the end of summer.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying The Century Trilogy! Now we can go around evangelizing about them until everyone else reads them.

  9. Engie, I’m trying! Everyone I know is getting pretty tired of hearing about them. And, thanks for stomping on my used bookstore love! Just kidding, but now I’m afraid I’ll see them through your eyes from now on. I can see what you’re saying.
When I lived up north, I hated fall!!! Because I hated winter so much! I would be clinging to every last second of summer if I were you- I get it.

  10. I don’t love bookstores of any sort. The horror, right? But I love libraries. I find bookstores overwhelming because I hate spending money so the thought of being surrounded by books I have to pay to access kinda freaks me out. Is that weird?

I love fall. I love pumpkin-flavoured things (though I rarely use pumpkin in cooking; an issue I need to remedy ASAP). I don’t really decorate much for fall – Christmas is the only holiday I “go all out for” and even that’s pretty boring and basic, but I love nature’s decorations! Bring on the pumpkins and the colourful leaves.

    1. To each his own! I LOVE bookstores, even though really it makes no sense. I should love libraries more- spending money on books when you could get them from the library is stupid. But I just love all the new books, beautifully displayed…. of course the used bookstore wasn’t quite like that! But I loved it as well. I guess I just love books.
Elisabeth, I could envision some pumpkin muffins in your future…

  11. We do have a couple of used bookstores and I tend to look there first when looking for a specific book. That being said -I do like bookstores in general.
The last book I read was ” A Psalm for the Wild-Built” by Becky Chambers. It’s about a monk in a fictional world looking for a purpose and his encounter with a wild Roboter. It’s short and really sweet. probably my favorite read this year.

    1. I’ve heard of the Becky Chambers books but never read any. And, now that I know about this used bookstore I’ll look there more often- much cheaper than buying new books!

  12. I love bookstores too! I like “cute” bookstores though. We have a half priced bookstore fairly near my house (used books) which is very just ok. It’s like in a strip mall, no character, etc. I really only go there for specific circumstances, but it can be a good deal! It’s just not that fun to browse with the big fluorescent lights, etc. We went to this amazing bookstore in Maine that had so much character, wood floors, and older building- I always think of that one. I think it would be so fun to put a great bookstore in our town’s little downtown, complete with super comfy chairs and a coffee shop! But I’m not really the entrepreneur type, lol! And I feel like a small independent bookstore is probably not really where the money’s at these days, either. Ha. But I think it would be a hit in my town! We don’t have any.

  13. OMG, I love your pumpkin bowl! How cute is that?

Yeah, it’s funny how I am so happy to have my fall decorations at now but come mid-November, I will be tired of them and ready for my Christmas decorations!!

Right now, I’m reading The God of the Woods by Liz Moore but not making enough time for it. I really want to spend lots of hours this weekend reading. (In between all the football watching, of course!)

  14. Ooh, what did you get from the used bookstore? I just bought four fairly random ones mail order from a shop in Derbyshire because I know the shop and they are struggling. I think we saved them for at least a while between us!

  15. Pumpkin Oatmeal out of a pumpkin bowl…. could it be any more “pumpkin season”? (Tell me where this quote is from LOL)

I love when books that are so gripping have sequels!
