Things Are Looking Up…

You guys.  I GOT MY CAR BACK!!!  Just look how beautiful it is!

As a reminder, this is how it looked five weeks ago:

Yes, the guy did a great job.  And he kept the cost within his original estimate, so we forgive him for taking four weeks to fix it.  And it was literally in the nick of time- Hurricane Ian is barreling towards Florida, and while it won’t hit us directly, here’s our forecast for the rest of the week:

Yes, torrential rains and a flood watch are not conducive to bike riding.  I’m so happy to have my car back, I’m feeling positively jaunty.  So…. here are some lighthearted topics from the past week.

First up, I received this email from The Paper Store:

What? It’s my half birthday?  Oh… I guess it is!  I don’t usually celebrate my half birthday, but now I’m wondering why not.  In honor of the occasion, I made myself a pumpkin mug cake from Chocolate Covered Katie.

I know it doesn’t look like much, but it was delicious!

Next up.  I’m always grateful when my husband does household chores, but sometimes I have to laugh when he unloads the dishwasher.

In all seriousness, this was his best attempt at stacking the bowls.  I especially love how on the shelf below, there’s ONE lone bowl- and then look how the bowls are stacked on the shelf above.  I doubt he noticed anything wrong with this.  Oh well!

No picture of this last one, unfortunately.  An older woman came in for massage today.  She looked to be around 70, and the most striking thing about her appearance was her bright red lipstick.  “Oh, that’s cheerful,” I thought.  Then when we were in the treatment room I noticed a very strong scent of vanilla.  i mentioned it and she said “Oh yes, that’s me!  I don’t like regular perfume but I love things like vanilla body wash.”  Well, at this point I was really starting to love her.  A 70-year-old woman who wears bright red lipstick and smells like a bakery- you can just tell she knows how to enjoy life!  It put me in a good mood for the rest of the day.

I hope everyone is having a great week!  Thanks as always to Kim and Zenaida for hosting Tuesday Topics!

Have you ever celebrated your half birthday? – We used to celebrate the kids’ half birthdays when they were little because they both have a birthday very close to Christmas.

  1. Your birthday must be so close to Abby’s – she was just mentioning how she and another girl in her youth group (who share the same birthday – March 26th), were excited for another friend who’s birthday is September 26th. It was like this giant celebration of birthday’s + half birthday’s.

I think I only did this once, but one year for one of the kids (can’t even remember which one), I did a half cupcake on their half birthday and lit a candle and we said it was time to practice their candle-blowing skills. It was really fun and whimsical. It would be a fun annual tradition…but it feels a bit late to start this now (and yet another thing to remember).

I’m SO glad you have your car back; while I’m relieved you’re not right in the path of the hurricane, I do hope there is no damage in your area and you’re able to safely get around as needed to work and such. It still looks like an unpleasant week weather-wise.

I LOVE when older people (especially women) are feisty and seem so content in their aging skin and yet also make an effort to love life and take pleasure in the little things (like bright lipstick and fun scents).

Also, I just finished reading NGS’s latest blog post and she used the word “jaunty” and it made me so happy. Imagine my delight to see it AGAIN!

    1. I know, that’s SO FUNNY! When have I ever used the word “jaunty” before??? Such a coincidence.
Yep, Abby’s birthday is close to mine- mine is March 21st. I agree, we have enough on our plates without trying to celebrate everyone’s half birthday. I would never have thought of mine if I hadn’t gotten that email.

    1. I’m pretty sure the hurricane is going to hit the west coast of Florida, which I feel bad about- but it’s good for us. We’ll just get some wind and a lot of rain.

  2. What? Half-birthdays?! HAHA!! That’s hilarious, Jenny!
I guess one good thing about your carless experience is that you now know that you could – if you wanted to – live with only one car. It must feel quite liberating!
I love the vanilla lady! I feel we will hear more from her.

    1. Yes, I did think it was funny when I got that email. I guess they’re really trying to find any reason to get me to spend money!

  3. That lady is admirable! I used to have a Tuesday afternoon seniors’ yoga class, and all my ladies would come decked out in full makeup with cute outfits and their hair done, and I loved them all so much. It’s what I want to do as I age – well, I kind of do that now! Put your lipstick on and let’s go, that’s my motto.

Yay that the car is back!

  4. I have never celebrated my half birthday, but it is close to Valentine’s Day, so maybe I need to start incorporating a celebration to help combat winter blahs! I mean, any excuse to get a celebratory cupcake is a good excuse in my book.

I’m so glad you have your car back! That weather forecast looks nasty and riding around on a bicycle would not be fun!

    1. Ha, we truly got the car back in the nick of time. It rained all day today, and the weather for the next two days looks horrible. And yes- if I were you i would definitely be celebrating anything I could in February.

  5. My half birthday is close to my husband’s birthday, and he jokingly emphasizes his half birthday so I jokingly emphasize mine but we don’t celebrate. I did consider having a half birthday party for Paul in September. His classmates all tend to have extremely low key park birthday parties. The parents bring food and a bday dessert, the kids run around and have fun, and the invitations explicitly say “no gifts.” It’s the best IMO! But his birthday is March 1st which is a horrible time for a park birthday party. So I thought maybe we should just celebrate his half birthday party and enjoy the beautiful weather but then I lost steam and wondered if it would seem weird or if it would confuse Paul. So instead, we’ll just delay his bday party to May 2023 when it is nicer outside. But I did really like the idea of a half birthday party! Will is going to have the same issue w/ a December 3rd party. We don’t do kid parties until they turn 5 (arbitrary rule I made up) so I guess I’ll cross that bridge when we get there!

I’m so glad your car is back. I hope this is the start of a chain of GOOD things!!! I am glad you are avoiding the worst of the storm but I would be dreading the weekend if I lived there because that would mean we’d be trapped inside!

    1. When my daughter was little she understood that she had an “actual” birthday and a “summer” birthday. But I can see how it would be confusing! She’s the one who really gets gypped because her birthday is December 30th- ugh, who wants to celebrate on December 30th? Poor thing.

  6. Yay so glad you got your car back! Hope you don’t have too bad of weather this week. The storm looks pretty bad. My husband says he stopped undoing the dishwasher bc he doesn’t put it away the way I would. So there’s that lol. My son’s half birthday is on my birthday and vice versa so that’s always fun 🙂 Enjoy yours for sure

    1. Oh, that IS fun!!! You’ll never forget your half birthday.
Yes- I’m afraid to complain about the bowl stacking because the dishwasher may never be unloaded again.

    1. Yes, Tampa is supposed to get hit hard! We’re not sure what we’re going to get yet, but schools are canceled for tomorrow. We’ll see.

  7. Our son swapped his flight (originally for Thursday) and safely landed in Des Moines this afternoon. He flew home to go to the Iowa-Michigan game on Saturday. I hope you stay safe and that the rain isn’t as bad as predicted. Our son and oldest daughter both have July birthdays, so we celebrated their half birthdays in January, allowing them to bring treats to school. I guess I just had my half birthday, too 😉

  8. I missed the story about what happened to your car. Glad you have it back. I do not celebrate my half birthday – actually I never thought about it. Mine will be May 20th. Now you gave me something to think about. I think red lipstick is beautiful!

    1. Yeah, I figured some people might have missed the car incident (although I feel like I talked about it incessantly) so that’s why I posted a picture from right after the accident. I crashed into another car (sigh) but luckily no one was hurt!

  9. Ok, but not 50% off on your half birthday?? They really missed the marketing draw on that one! Nope, no half birthday for me. Not even a birthday week or birthday month when it rolls around. Your car really looks great. I don’t notice any fix! What a relief to have it back, especially with that weather heading your way!

  10. I have never heard of such a thing as celebrating half birthdays. Not sure how I feel about it.
That car (4 weeks prior) doesn’t look too good. Apparently I missed what has happened. But glad all is fixed now.

    1. Thank you Tobia! Yes, I like the thought of half birthdays but I’m sure next September I’ll have forgotten all about it.

  11. Haha! Happy Belated Half Birthday! Come to think of it… there’s no reason we shouldn’t celebrate it!
Your 70 year old client reminds me of my aunt-in-law. A few years ago, we travelled with her for a funeral together with other relatives. When we got to the village, a cousin (my age) and this aunt had to share a room. While we plonked into bed without a second’s thought, she was up rolling her hair, doing a face mask, etc. etc., and we thought here is this elderly woman who has completely put our beauty regimen (lack of!) to shame!

    1. Ha, that’s funny! Especially since it was for a funeral (not to be too light-hearted about that.) I mean it’s not usually a glamorous event!

  12. I have a set of this one lone bowl… Target, right? I love those bowls (but yeah, curious how your husband unloaded the dishwasher 🙂

I hope you guys didn’t have too hard of a time with hurricane Ian. Looks like most of Florida got drenched though.
