walkers walk… but runners fly

Wednesday Fun

I know I complain about working on Saturdays, but I do love having Wednesdays off!  This Wednesday, I had to go to the dentist, so no mid-week trail run for me.  Instead, I did a quick early run before taking my daughter to school, then continued on to the dentist.

I had to have a cavity filled, which I always do without novocaine.  At this point you’re probably thinking, “Jenny.  Having a cavity drilled without novocaine does NOT sounds like ‘Wednesday Fun.'”  Ha ha…okay, that wasn’t the fun part of the day. But I will say it also isn’t that bad.  It really doesn’t hurt!  Maybe there’s a little pain, but I don’t think it’s as bad as getting the novocaine shot.  You also don’t walk out of there all numbed-up and drooling.  Anyway…

I left the dentist and the fun started.  I stopped at The Container Store, which I always do this time of year because I love to look at their wrapping paper.

Their stuff is expensive, but of course if I had found something I absolutely loved I would have gotten it (since this is going to be the Best Christmas Ever.)  I ended up not getting anything, but I enjoyed looking.

Next up- Barnes and Noble, where I bought the FIRST GIFT OF CHRISTMAS:

This is for my son’s “book flood.”  I actually had a whole list of books I was interested in, but this was the only one they had!  There’s nothing more frustrating that that- I had money to spend and was ready to walk out of there with a stack of books.  One book does not make a flood!  Well, luckily there’s Amazon.  I was just hoping to look through some of the books in the store- oh well.

Then, on to Trader Joe’s!  After being in such a Christmas-y frame of mind, it was odd to see that Trader Joe’s was all about Thanksgiving, but oh yeah- I have to get ready for THANKSGIVING next week.

Trader Joe’s had everything I wanted, including the cat advent calendar (photo at the top of this post) which we get every year.  The cats love it.  Well, we love it, and they love the treats inside.

I spent $170 at Trader Joe’s… and then got home and realized I had no idea what we’re having for dinner.  Oops.

Next up… nap on the couch with my snuggly cat.

After that I picked up my daughter, and the day morphed into cleaning/cooking/laundry and getting ready for tomorrow.  .But it was a fun Wednesday.

Have you started your Christmas shopping?

Are you ready for Thanksgiving?- Not even close.  But after today I’m ready to feed my son when he gets home on Saturday!

Novocaine- yes or no?

  1. Regarding Novocain, for me it depends on the size of the filling. If it’s small and only going to take a few minutes, then I go without. You’re right, the shots hurt, and I don’t like the numbness after. If it’s going to be awhile, then I get it. I need to have a crown in January, and I’ll definitely be getting Novocain for that!

Christmas shopping – Yes, I’ve started. I went to France with my cousin in September, and I bought some gifts there. And since then, I’ve bought a few items as well. I’d say I’m probably 70% finished.

Thanksgiving, I’m almost ready…still a few things left to buy. We’re hosting this year, but it will only be 8 of us, and everyone chips in, so one person doesn’t have to do it all. Should be fun! Regarding shopping and spending $170 and still no idea what’s for dinner, that’s hilarious. Also, been there, done that, too many times to count.

    1. I’m actually not sure how much wrapping paper I have this year- I know we bought some on sale after Christmas last year. I really have to check before I buy anything.

  2. I have way too much Christmas wrapping paper; I MUST not buy any this year. I’m actually forcing myself to finish what’s already started instead of using the nice, new pretty rolls. I always stock up after Christmas when it’s on sale, but then my husband also found some (at a thrift shop) and bought it at a great price…so I have a flood of wrapping paper!

I AM ready for Thanksgiving…because in Canada it’s over in October and I LOVE the timing. I cannot imagine having to plan for two huge holidays back-to-back like you do in America. I’m sure it’s lovely in many ways, but for me it is only about Christmas at this point (well, once I get beyond the birthday party for my son on Saturday; I am not a birthday party Mom, but here I am about to head into his first “big” one since the pandemic. Wish me luck! I’m sure it will be fun, but I scheduled it for 2.5 hours. What was I thinking? This is not like my daughter’s party where they’ll all go to her room and giggle and entertain themselves. At most it should have been 2 hours. )

And I can 100% relate to the spending oodles on groceries and then having no idea what to eat for supper. Also, grocery shopping is just so much easier than meal-planning to me. I could buy groceries all day, but it is A LOT of work to translate those raw materials into something edible.

    1. Yes, I really wish Thanksgiving were earlier here! It would make much more sense. Ours is definitely too close to Christmas. I guess that’s something we’ll never get changed though.
Good luck with the birthday party!

  3. I would say it depends on the Novocaine. If it’s quick I am for without. I used to feel awful after the numbing as a kid and almost always had a headache when it started wearing off. I had to have a filling taken out because there was a crack in it and a cavity underneath. I almost certainly would not have lasted through that sitting without the Novocaine. It almost took an hour. Apparently German fillings are harder to take out – who knew.
The TJ shopping trip without having something for dinner so could have been me. It seems like it happens all the time (I should start making lists).

    1. That’s funny- my procedure was actually taking out an old filling and replacing it. It was pretty quick so maybe you’re right- German fillings must be hard to get out!

  4. What a bummer that B&N didn’t have all the books you wanted. Ender’s Game is such a good start – I hope your son loves it as much as I do!

I have dental issues and regardless of the outcome at the dental appointment, if I have one in the morning, I will milk it all day that I suffered unduly at the hands of the dentist. I think you should definitely play it up that this was the WORST appointment EVER and you deserve PAMPERING and everyone should take care of you. But maybe that’s just how I do things. 🙂

  5. Spending $170 at TJs and coming home and having no idea what to eat…yep that sounds familiar. We just made our Thanksgiving plans today. We’re doing a big family bash with everyone pitching in so no one has to do too much.

    1. Yes, my husband and son will pitch in (or, I should say they have their assignments for Thanksgiving dinner.) It’ll just be the four of us with a ton of food.

  6. Yeah… I just realized that next Sunday is the first of advent. Lets say I am behind is the biggest understatement. Usually around this time of year I have at least the idea for mom wreath, gathered materials and make it. Since we are hosting a Friendsgiving next week … the first ever – my mind needs to focus on that. Nit that I have. We spontaneously took a trip to IKEA yesterday. The husband needed stuff and I w anted to look at Christmas stuff. I bought some wrapping paper. A few candles but that was about it. I have zero presents as of yet. You are ahead….

  7. It is so easy to spend $$$ at Trader Joe’s! I love that they have a cat advent calendar. That is adorable.

I wonder if they have dog ones… I bet my daughter would like to get advent calendars for all the local dogs.

YAY for buying the first Christmas gift! I bought a couple this week, too — and some have already arrived! Yay!

By the way, you are so badass for getting a cavity drilled without pain medication. I have severe dentist anxiety, and I also think I have a very low pain tolerance, AND I am also very resistant to anesthetic, so the dentist is a nightmare every time.

  8. I love that your cats have an advent calendar. My husband is a HUGE cat person so he would LOVE this. But we do not have our cat with us much anymore. She’s an extremely part time cat. And we get told she weighs too much at appts – which is not surprising since my MIL gives her so many treats. If my MIL knew about an advent calendar for cats, I think she would for sure buy one!

I have most of our holiday shopping done but we buy sooo few gifts. The cousins have a gift exchange, we buy a few things for the boys, and then that is kind of it besides daycare gifts (cash!) and other odds and ends. I sound the grinchiest person but I’m trying to get my kids on board with all the fun experiences of the holiday season – and you can see from my recent post that we have a lot of fun things – The Grinch, cookie decorating, their book advent calendar (which results in a lot of spending – I think I bought 10 picture books this year), a outdoor light show, etc. I know eventually the kids will get more into gifts or understand who buys them for them but I want to try to remain on the low key side of things, especially since my MIL buys them a ridiculous amount of stuff!

I’m firmly team no Novocain! I’ve had dentist who were shocked I could get through the drilling without it but I hate getting Novocain so much!

    1. Yes, I would rather have a little pain from the drilling, than the shot.
My son thinks our cats are too fat, so he’s probably the only one who will frown at the advent calendar. I say they’re “festively plump.”

  9. Oh, a fun day definitely includes a stop at Trader Joe’s for me (I just love shopping there – maybe that’s why I don’t mind grocery shopping day). I also visited the Container Store recently – wow, it’s so fancy. They have great stuff, but I didn’t realize before HOW expensive everything is there.

  10. I must get to Trader Joe’s to get that cat advent calendar! I bought one from Chewy last year that had a little toy for each day, but I looked it up for this year, and all of the toys are the same! Blah. I would much rather a cat treat one, too. They have enough toys, haha.

    1. Yes, I saw one with toys in the pet store- but my cats also have enough toys. They like the treats in the TJs calendar.
