Oh hi there! Welcome to the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) This week looked a little different for me- my legs were asking for a rest, and I obliged. Let’s get into it…
Sunday
I ran a race! (Race recap here.) I ran a couple miles before the race to make it 15 miles for the day.
Monday
Even though I didn’t “race” this race, I was sore today! I must have run harder than I normally do in a long run. I got out for a 2 mile walk, but otherwise this was a rest day.
Tuesday
Another 2 mile walk in the morning, and in the afternoon I went to the gym with my daughter. We did squats and Bulgarian split squats (she wanted help with her form) but my quads were still sore, so I did everything with lighter weights.
Wednesday
I wasn’t sure how my hip/hamstring were doing, so I decided to run on the treadmill at the gym. I figured if anything hurt I could get right off and onto something else… but it was fine! I ran 4 miles. And look at this treadmill- you can set it to go DOWNHILL. This could come in handy if I’m ever training for a hilly race (since there are no actual hills in South Florida.)
I finished with some work on the abs machines.
Thursday
In the morning I did the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout.. At night… I went to the gym to run. I know, that’s weird! Our gym has a room with cardio equipment where they play movies, and tonight it was a Star Wars movie. My daughter and her friend wanted to go and check it out.
I didn’t actually watch the movie- the treadmills in the “theater” were limited and I wanted to leave them for someone who did want to watch. I ran 4 miles on a regular treadmill- I had my podcasts to listen to.
I also did RDLs with my daughter. We really focused on form, watching ourselves in the mirror and concentrating on activating the right muscles. It was good for me to review! (Side note- my chiropractor, who also has a “sensitive” low back, told me he never does squats and deadlifts on the same day. Duly noted!)
Friday
My upper body needed a little attention, so I did Caroline Givan’s arm and shoulder workout followed by her 4×4 Lower Abs Workout..
Saturday
5 mile run! I’m still a little wary of my hip/hamstring situation, but this run felt pretty good.

Sunday
On tap for today… sleeping late! I didn’t have a great week of sleep, so I really need a later wakeup today. I’m moving my long runs back to Wednesdays, and I have to be ready to hit it hard next week.
Top photo is from the postcard Elisabeth sent me!
Would you run on a treadmill while watching a movie? – I might try it another time. They show a different movie every day!

That’s interesting about the movie and the treadmill. Tempting. But nope for me.
Love to see you outside with no snow.
My legs were feeling it until Thursday.
Yes, I would say my legs started to feel normal by Thursday. No snow here! Ever.
I hate treadmills so much that I don’t even think a movie would make it appealing to run on one!
I bet you were extra sore on Monday since you logged a lot of miles on the road, which is a lot harder on your body than running on trails! You had a solid week of workouts though! Mine was pretty lackluster since it was an off week with travel and sick family members. I did do a fast walk at an uphill setting on a treadmill at the hotel on Wednesday morning. It wasn’t 12/3/30 – instead I used a lower incline and walked at a faster pace. Yesterday I got out for a nice long walk although it was colder than I was expecting so I probably should’ve done it later in the day. I’ll get out for another long walk today.
I like those uphill treadmill walks- I need to add some into my training. And- I hope you get some of the warmer temps this week. Sounds like it’s been miserable up there lately.
So glad your legs are doing OK!
What a cool concept for a gym to offer!
I’ve never tried a tread that can go dowhill!
I’ve heard of downhill treadmills, but never run on one. My new gym apparently has a little of everything.
A downhill treadmill! That is fancy. I love “take your treadmill to the movies night”. Yes I have watched many movies and TV shows on the treadmill, and the right movie or show makes the time fly by.
We’re heading into a warmer spell so it just might be possible to get a few outdoor workouts next week!
I’ve heard all about this big warmup coming your way! I hope it doesn’t mean it’s going to be super hot here again (but it probably does, sigh.)
Congrats again on your race! I am sure it was fun to hang with Darlene. When I was more motivated for training for longer races, I did watch movies and run on the treadmill. It definitely helped! Glad you are recovering smartly after your race.
Thanks Deborah! My legs were definitely telling me it was a recovery week.
Jenny, I’m absolutely loving all the gym time with your daughter you’re getting… what a cool thing to bond over, and so on brand for you <3
I don't even know if I could run on a treadmill in a darkened room with a movie playing, I feel like I might lose my balance or something?
Actually, I had that same thought. Once I get going on the treadmill I’m fine, but in the beginning I always have a little fear that I’ll stumble or do something weird and fall off. I’m guessing that once I got used to looking at the movie screen, I would be fine. I’ll have to try it sometime.
It sounds like you recovered well after your race that wasn’t really a race for you!
I’ve never seen a treadmill that goes downhill but that would be useful. Except my biggest issue with downhills is how rocky and technical they are (at least on the trails here) which slows me down, and practicing on a smooth treadmill wouldn’t really help me get faster. But for hilly road races, it would be great!
I finally signed up for my next race, a 50K, but it isn’t until late September but I do have a couple “runventures” I’d like to do this spring/summer so I have to start ramping up my long runs for that. The longest I’ve done since my race last month has been 11 miles.
Yeah, that’s a good point- the downhills I encounter in races are technical, and that’s why I’m afraid to run them. So a smooth treadmill wouldn’t really help.I guess it would help if I were training for Boston, HAHAHAHAHA…. definitely not doing that.
I’m curious about these “runventures!”
Two things that might (heavy emphasis “might”) get me to reconsider treadmill running are the downhill setting and the big movie screen. I have hills in my area (not as many as my previous town, though), but I can see the value in having that setting as an option for those who need more realistic hill training. And, if I had a giant screen to distract me (as opposed to my phone or even a TV screen), that could be a game changer. Looks like your recovery week worked its magic!
Yeah they’re doing everything possible to make treadmill running appealing! One of these days I’ll watch a movie and report back.
I don’t like to watch anything when I’m on the TM. I’ve tried it, but I much prefer music to watching something. I read once somewhere that runners should be focused on the workout to get the maximum benefit. I guess if you’re distracted, watching a show and just going through the motions, you don’t get as much out of it? I don’t know if that’s true, but it makes sense to me!
Off to read your race recap!!! Oh, and we don’t do squats and DLs on the same day at my gym either.
Okay, good to know- I’ve usually done tham on the same day because it seems like if I’m at the gym, I should just do it all. But I won’t from now on. i think if you’re getting in a real workout on the treadmill- which I do like to do, I always say treadmills and speedwork go together beautifully- you wouldn’t want to watch something. But if you’re doing easy miles, watching something is probably fine.
How cool about treadmill running while watching a movie! I’ve never heard about such a thing. But I can imagine it can be good – I watch concerts on YouTube while rowing. It’s a good distraction from the boredom! But rowing is more monotonous – what Wendy said really makes sense for running.
How good for you and your daughter to train together and help each other with form like that.
Yes, it’s REALLY helpful for me to try and teach someone- I have to think through what I’m doing. I guess that’s why they say you should always have some better, equal to, and worse than yourself- all three are helpful.
I never enjoyed watching TV while running on a treadmill. I WISH it helped the time pass for me. Also, what do they expect you to do? Run for the full 3 hours of a Star Wars movie? But I don’t want to leave before it’s done…?? Cool concept, though. And downhill treadmills? I’ve never heard of such of thing but that makes so much sense!
I’m so glad you took a picture of the postcard 🙂 It really did make me smile and think of you immediately!!! (Of course it doesn’t specify, but I have insider knowledge that it’s an Earl Grey tea bag, of course!)
It’s obviously Earl Grey! : )
I don’t know- my daughter’s friend had already seen that movie several times so she was happy to jump in wherever and then leave before the end. I guess if you (tragically) had to do a long run inside, you could pass the time by watching a movie.
I love the movie idea. Working out while engrossed in a movie sounds so fun. That health club has a sweet set up. I do not ride the bike for very long, so I doubt I would last to the halfway point of the movie, but it does sound fun and if I liked the movie , I would give it a try.
Actually, I would rather ride a bike and watch a movie- the bike is SO boring to me. Maybe next time I have to ride the bike, I’ll try the movie option.
Am I the only one who gets motion sick on a treadmill? I see people reading or watching tv on treadmills and ellipticals and I just cannot do that without getting woozy!
I’m pretty sure I couldn’t read! And now that you mention it- I actually have never tried watching anything. I always listen to a podcast or music. Hmm, I’m going to have to try this at some point and see!
You got in a LOT.
I hate the treadmill, but I would be tempted to do it if a movie was involved. It has more of a community feel than watching something on the little screen of the machine or on your phone or iPad. How fun.
so cool to have TM on a “movie” set. I would put a trail race there to run, I always find it inspiring to see trail ultra runners enduring the struggle.
glad to hear you’ve recovered well and fast.
Going downhill on a treadmill sounds a bit alarming, did you give it a go? I’d be worried I’d crash into the front but I suppose it helps you learn to control your descent!
Sounds like a full and fun week! Sleeping late is always a nice thing to look forward to!
Well done on the race / long run! How fun to connect with Darlene!
