walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Best and Worst Edition

Hi there! I’ll warn you right now that there was no running this week! There wasn’t a lot of activity in general, for that matter. But that doesn’t stop me for linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Rundown. In lieu of lots of running and gym photos, I have some awards to give out this week. Let’s get started!

Monday

Okay, I actually don’t feel THAT bad. I have a normal amount of post-race soreness, but once I get going, I’m okay. The only thing that is not okay are both big toenails- no photos (because I wouldn’t do that to you) but they really hurt. The award for “Best Shoes of the Week” goes to…

Aaaaah.

I even considered wearing them to work, but ultimately decided I wanted more support. But by the end of the workday my toes were throbbing, and crocs came on.

Tuesday

“Best Post Race Experience”… I got a 90 minute massage. I told the therapist that my whole body was sore, I didn’t want anything deep, just medium pressure all over. I was in HEAVEN.

Wednesday

Okay, let’s try this cycling thing! I went to the gym and did 30 minutes on the bike. Winner of “Worst Photo of the Week” award goes to…

What is even going on here.

Thursday

Okay, time for a walk! I felt pretty good, but once I got going I could feel residual soreness in my quads. And guess who else chimed in- my left hamstring. It was the first time my hamstring hurt since the race! I guess running 50 miles didn’t cure it after all, darn.

Winner of “Most Tiring Two Mile Walk Ever.”

At night we had my daughter’s jazz band concert! It was outdoors…

… and my husband and I had the best seats in the house, right across the street at a Mexican restaurant. We could hear the band perfectly, and enjoyed some adult beverages.

Beer, chips and guac should be served at every concert!

Friday

Winner of the “Most Disorganized Day” award. My daughter wasn’t going to school. Oh wait- she was. Wait again- she’s going to go late. Oh and also the internet is out. What? What is going on? I ended up with no exercise at all, and guess what- I’m not training for anything so it didn’t matter.

Saturday

A special shoutout to our next door neighbor- she gets the “Biggest Jerk in the World” award. The internet outage affected several houses, and was traced to a problem in her backyard- BUT SHE WOULDN’T LET AT&T IN TO FIX IT. They had to call the police.  The issue is still not fixed (apparently it involves a tree?) Thanks to Starbucks for providing the wifi to make this post possible!

In the afternoon, I had a really nice 45 minute walk.

This actually felt pretty good!

Sunday

On tap for today- sleeping in. Waffles. In the afternoon- gym with my daughter! Not quite sure what I’ll be doing there, but it won’t be running. I’m not quite ready yet. But… I do have my eye on another race. It took me a few days, but then I was back on Ultra Signup, perusing the possibilities. More details to come!

How was your week? Any “best” or “worst” moments?

  1. I’m torn between the massage and the mountain of guac for best of the week. This week definitely had a lot of bests.

Hopefully your toes will be back to normal soon, your hamstring will take a chill, and your neighbor will get it together.

    1. I think the neighbor is pretty hopeless, but my toes are getting better! The hamstring- we’ll see. I’ll probably be back at my chiro next week for some aggressive treatments.
Yep- you definitely picked out the two highlights of the week!

  2. I think I remember you listening to the concert from the Mexican restaurant last year! That is an excellent place to listen!

Wow that neighbor is something else. What in the world. What a terrible person!!

Let’s see, best part of my week was book club on Friday which was at a restaurant 2 blocks from my house. Worst was that Paul had a stomach ache so he stayed home on Wednesday which threw off my day.

    1. Yes, the concert/Mexican restaurant is now an annual tradition! And, I think the neighbor has, shall we say, some mental health issues. She’s really difficult.
Ugh- I was hoping for a month with no illnesses for you and Paul already stayed home from school! I hope it was minor and he’s back to normal now.

  3. A great recovery week, Jenny! Especially the concert with chips and drinks. That’s my kind of self-care!

I am so curious what is going on with your neighbor! Why the failure to allow AT&T in to address the wifi issue?!?! So weird!

Let’s see. Worst night of sleep award for Friday night, and runner up for last night. BOO. I feel so draggy already today and the day has barely started.

    1. Yes, beer definitely counts as self care! And- this neighbor woman is super paranoid. When she eventually did let them in, she insisted on videotaping them the whole time.
VERY sorry to hear about your sleep woes! I know what that feels like, and it’s not fun.

  4. Ooh love the beers, chips and guac and outdoor concert!! This seems like the perfect post-race week- your movement all seems very soothing and gentle and just right. And of course you’re looking at your next race! 😉 Looking forward to hearing what it is….

    1. Thanks Kai! I was thinking about you, because I requested the guac to be “medium” spicy. I thought “Kae would not approve!!!”

  5. Genius award definitely goes to you and your husband for scouting out and securing the best seats in the house for your daughter’s concert!

I’m looking forward to seeing what race you’re eyeing next. You mentioned “ultra” signup so I’m guessing it’s not just any ole short and skimpy race. BTW, I saw on Facebook where a guy had just completed his 100th 100-mile or longer race at last weekend’s Skunk Ape Ultra.

    1. Yep, that was my race! I heard about that guy and probably saw him, but I don’t know offhand which one he was. Pretty cool, right???

  6. Wow, what a weirdo your neighbour is. I can only imagine she’s got some kind of illegal operation going on in there. Or she’s just a see you next Tuesday!
I wondered how your body was feeling this week! The massage sounds divine, so does the guac.

    1. Well, I’ve been thinking my neighbor was just a little crazy and a lot paranoid, but I like your theory- she’s running an illegal operation! It all fits together now.

  7. The chips & guac and outdoor concert sound like a great way to spend an evening!

After my 100K attempt where I ended up finishing with 52 miles because of my feet, I ordered a pair of fuzzy Crocs sandals to wear to work because I tried wearing sneakers but it was too painful and it was still too cold (since it was January) to wear my usual Teva sandals. Crocs for the win after ultras!

I can’t wait to hear about your next race plans! It’s like a rite of passage to sign up for your next ultra a few days after your previous one hahaha!

    1. Crocs are seriously the best. I want to wear these everywhere (my daughter disapproves, but I don’t care!)
Yep, I have a race picked out, but it’s not for a while. I’m sure I’ll throw something else in there as well- details coming up!

  8. Okay that neighbor does sound like the worst! How is that even allowed? I can’t believe the police had to get involved. Glad you’re feeling alright a week later – and of course thinking about the next event!

    1. Thanks Melissa! This neighbor is extremely paranoid and didn’t want anyone in her yard. She has… issues.

  9. I love your outdoor concert seating — brilliant!

WTF with your neighbor? And the police had to come? That’s serious drama.

We were curious when Verizon started marking our front yard a few weeks ago — in a line from the street to our backyard — we don’t have Verizon and it’s new to our area — My husband went out to ask what was going on and the guy was asleep in the truck??? Whenever he woke up he left without doing anything more to our yard ….

Glad you aren’t too beat up after your ultra. Hopefully the hamstring is just a bit tired.

    1. Well, AT&T is still working on our internet! Apparently there’s a tree involved and they’re going to dig a whole new line… they should be working on it today. Hopefully wifi tonight! Grr.

  10. Glad to see you are taking the time to really recover before heading out for a run again. A massage is always a great idea! I bet it’s nice to be on the other side of things for a change. Have a great week ahead

    1. Thanks Deborah! And, yes- just lying down on the massage table feels luxurious to me,! It feels good to be the recipient.

  11. Now those concert seats sound awesome! (As do the refreshments). What is up with people (aka, your neighbor) being so unwilling to be part of the solution rather than just the problem? I’m glad your body is healing and recovering…hoping the left hammy follows suit.

    1. Thanks Kim! I think the hamstring is going to need some assistance- I’ll be seeing my sports chiropractor this week.

  12. I feel like you had a band event for your daughter in the same place last year? It’s ringing familiar bells in my brain. Regardless – what a great view of the concert!

I LOVE my Crocs. Definitely comfortable footwear after such an arduous race.

Ugh. I’m so sorry to hear about the neighbour situation. How frustrating…for everyone 🙁 Hope the internet issues are all sorted ASAP.

    1. Yes, this concert is a yearly event! I”ll be sad if they decide to move it, because the location (right across from the Mexiacn restaurant) is ideal.
Internet is STILL down and I’m getting a little…. irritated. AT&T will be out today, supposedly to dig a new line. Whatever, just get it fixed!

  13. Best seats in the house… across the street… lol
I like your Crocs, and am wondering if that aqua/teal blue is your favorite color? (It’s mine!!)

  14. Also, your neighbor sounds crummy.
But your massage sounds like perfection. I hope your waffles were great and that you found your next ultra project.
(I learned the term “ultra” from you!)

    1. Ha, “crummy” is one word for her! I”ll try using that instead of other words I was thinking of.

  15. After yesterday’s 22 mile extravaganza (we walked, didn’t run), my feet are so unhappy and I have a big toenail that sounds like yours. Who knew walking could take such a toll? I’m sadly taking the day off from strength training. Monday is lower body day and I don’t think my legs would appreciate the box jumps that are programmed in the workout.

Your neighbor is a jerk! Is she a jerk all the time or just in this instance? WTH. Reminds me of something George said on Seinfeld: “We live in a SOCIETY!”

  16. Oh gosh. Your poor toes. What’s with your neighbor? Rude. I don’t get people sometimes.

My best of the week is easy: Mini is home. Plus an uneventful trip to Appleton for travel ball. Plus Curly had a D2 college phone call that went well.

Worst of the week: My sleep was messed up last week. Something was happening with my gut even though I eat the same damn thing and take my meds religiously. But, I snapped out of it late Friday afternoon and was able to take a long nap.

Hooray for watching the concert from a place that served adult beverages. I love an outdoor concert experience, but you def nailed it with the option to load up on drinks and snacks.

  17. Your neighbor is a jerk! How rude!

Love the outside jazz concert. We have our spring concert tomorrow night and then we are done. We skipped out on States at UF this year – it’s so $$$$ for the bus, and we just don’t have the money. Bummer, but what can you do.

I’m sure your body was happy to have the rest and time for recovery!

  18. I LOVE that you get snacks and beer during the concerts. All concerts, recitals, etc. would be much improved (says the person with no kids) if that were standard. 🙂
I hope you’re feeling back to normal by now!
