walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Between the Storms

Oh, hi there!  Thanks for stopping by the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!)  It was a good week- read on for details…

Monday

I started the week with a 3 mile run…

…followed by the Caroline Girvan deadbug workout.

Tuesday

This was a strength day at home- hip stability exercises, upper body strength focused on back, and a MadFit standing core workout..

Wednesday

“Long” run!  8 miles at my old favorite trail.  The last time I was here was before my race in February.

I forgot how much I love this trail.  We may not have mountains or woods, but I like to call this trail “Florida-beautiful.”

I was really happy with how well my calf held up in spite of the fact that this is a sandy trail.  But, I was a little alarmed at how hard eight miles felt!  Maybe it was the weather- I’m not complaining, mind you, but I’ll just mention that it was hot AF.  Or, maybe I’m just out of shape.  This was the first long-ish run I’ve done since May.  Well, I’ll just keep grinding away.

Thursday

Leg day at the gym!  Squats, deadlifts, and abs.

The usual.

Friday

I knew I was going to run two days in a row- for the first time since May- so I kept this run short.  2 miles…

Spooky running photo!

…followed by another MadFit standing core workout. and then hip stability exercises.

Saturday

It was a dark and stormy morning! Actually, it was just dark at first.  I ran 4 miles, and in the last mile the rain started.  Luckily no lightning though!

Still raining when I finished, so all I have is a photo of my sodden shoes.

I’m loving this schedule of a long run in the middle of the week, and Sundays off.  I finished this run, congratulated myself on a solid week, went to work, and then came home and hunkered down for the weekend.

What?  Some people go out on Saturday night?  Don’t be ridiculous!!!  We had plenty of entertainment right in our living room.  First up was my son’s senior recital.

This was a big day for him, and while we couldn’t be there in person, we were able to livestream the concert.  Other friends and relatives around the country were able to watch as well.

He played beautifully!

After that excitement, we watched the Baylor game.  Arg!  Can we ever WIN???  Oh well- at least we have the Dolphins tomorrow (Oh.  Wait… sigh.)

Sunday

On tap- sleeping in!  Waffles… football… the usual Sunday activities.  And- we have ANOTHER hurricane headed to Florida.  It’s predicted to hit Tampa, which is the last thing they need.  We’re forecasted to get a lot of rain.  I don’t want to wish away any of this time, but we’ll all be happy when hurricane season is OVER.

How was your week?

Do you like to sleep in on weekends, or do you keep to your regular schedule? – I know you’re supposed to stick to the same schedule every day, but there’s no way I’m getting up at 5:30 if I don’t have to!

  1. Nice job on that 8 mile trail run! What is it about 8 miles? I love that distance. Your trail is beautiful.

I can’t believe another hurricane is going to hit Tampa. One of our former neighbors, who lives in Seminole, lost everything. Another storm is just unimaginable.

    1. I know Wendy. It seems too cruel! You never know- these storms can change course quickly. But it’s probably going to make landfall somewhere in Florida.

  2. Nice to make it back to an old favorite trail. 8 miles was always a milestone of a distance for me. I loved having that as a base. Seems far away right now but so good when you get back to it. Fingers crossed for Florida this week that things are not as bad with the upcoming storm

    1. Yes, eight miles is definitely getting into “long-ish” territory! It’s a nice distance.
Fingers crossed- maybe this one won’t be as bad as forecasted.

  3. That’s great that so many were able to tune in for Paul’s recital! I’m so glad it went well! I bet you guys were such proud parents!

I’m so happy that your calf is doing well! Phew! I did not fit in much exercise this week. Just a 3 mile run on Tuesday and 5 yesterday. I hope I can get back to 3-4 workouts/week soon. But this is a tough stage of life and it doesn’t help that I can’t do much strength training since my flare is still bothering me… womp womp.

I get up around 5:50-6:15 depending on whether I am going into the office and whether I am blow drying my hair. On the weekend I tend to wake up around 6:30 unless taco wakes me up earlier. So my wake up time is pretty consistent. But I am not getting up crazy early! I wish I had the motivation to get up at 5 to workout but I am so tired as is, I can’t bring myself to get up earlier.

    1. I know Lisa- I HATE getting up in the “5s.” We had a day off of school this week, Thursday, and I got to sleep until 6:30. Anything with a 6 is much more civilized.
You’re doing well with your runs- even if you only run twice like that, you’re still keeping yourself in shape, and will be able to jump back into it when your schedule allows. SUCH a bummer about your hand- this has been going on way too long.

  4. Yay for 8!!! And yay for running two days in a row!!! I think you will “snap back” very quickly.

Grrrr to hurricane season. Let’s hope that the predictions are wrong and that it leaves Tampa (and you) alone.

I sleep in a bit later on weekends, but usually not much later. I get up around 6:30 during the week, and yesterday I slept in until 7 and today I woke up at 6, though I stayed in bed until 6:30. There have been times in my life when I’ve had to get up between 5-6 during the week to fit in my workouts and yes I guarantee that I did not wake up that early on weekends.

    1. I just can’t imagine waking up in the dark if I don’t absolutely have to! 6:30 is a civilized time.
i haven’t actually checked the weather today- maybe the hurricane has changed course? Let’s hope so.

  5. I keep the same schedule… but I never get up that early – 6:00 everyday. My cats do wake me up earlier. I never run in the dark either.

Great news bout your calf… does that mean you are running the trail race?

    1. Yes, right now I’m planning on running it. I mean… I won’t be running that far. It’s a twelve hour race (eye roll) and I’ll just run as much as I can 15-20 miles?. We’ll see.

  6. I haven’t run 8 miles in ages — it’s a big leap from the shorter runs you’ve been doing, so YAY that it went well.

I used to be adamant about not sleeping in on the weekends, but I’ve been treating myself to lazing in bed until … 6:30. 😉

My mother-in-law is in Bradenton and found a hotel in Tallahassee to evacuate too ….

    1. Well, I’m glad your MIL will be safe! It’s a pain to have to evacuate though.
I did a 6 mile trail run about ten days ago- so eight wasn’t TOO much of a leap. At least that’s what I told myself!

  7. Awww, so exciting about your son’s senior recital! Too bad you couldn’t be there, but thank goodness for technology to allow you to still see the whole thing.

I usually stay up later on the weekends, but I often still wake up fairly early. During the week I get up about 5:15, and on the weekends it’s not uncommon for me to just naturally wake up in the early 6:00s. But, now and then, especially if I went to bed extra late, I’ll sleep in until like 7. Yesterday I somehow slept until 8! It was unheard of!!! I guess Nashville wore me out, haha! (Many times the boys have things in the morning- or before, I used to have to drive Ethan to work often at 7 am…. but now that he can drive, if he has an early shift, he just gets up and goes! Hallelujah. Haha.)

    1. I’m pretty sure if livestreaming weren’t an option, we would have made the trip to Texas to see his recital. But it would have been really hard, so I’m glad we could see it this way!
I’m not surprised you slept till 8 yesterday- travel is tiring!

  8. I’m glad your 8 mile run felt good, at least calf-wise! Feel free to complain about the heat because I will too — I was supposed to do my last “long” run before my race yesterday (8-10 miles) but spent the morning at 2 Verizon stores getting my phone working again and by the time I would have been able to start my run, it would have been 100 degrees. So I’m gonna try again today with an earlier start! Hurricanes are definitely worse than heat though, so hopefully Florida stays safe!

I almost always sleep in on weekends, and in the summer that just means I usually suffer in the heat on my long runs, but I can’t see myself getting up at 5 am every day if I don’t have to — I’m not naturally a morning person and prefer to wake up around 7!

    1. Really? You didn’t want to run in 100 degree heat? Ha. I hope you were able to get that run in today in cool (ish) weather. What is your next race?

  9. It has been hot, especially mid week! I actually abandoned my long run 3 miles in yesterday (lightning) but did it today and weather was slightly better (and no lightning). Our standards are low, lol.

    1. Yes, lightning is pretty much my only dealbreaker. I’ll run in heat, humidity, rain, wind… today was actually a decent morning for a long run- overcast is good!

  10. Go you! Those trails ARE all beautiful.
Isn’t it amazing that we can livestream stuff from our far-away kids now? I know social media has its pitfalls, but man, technology has made it easier to have my kids five and fourteen hours away.
I sleep in on the weekends. I have chronic sleep issues and getting up early is always torture for me. I’m not sleeping in quite as much lately, which is good.
I complain ceaselessly about hot weather, and I’m in Canada so we’re not even close to Florida-hot.

  11. Okay Allison, definitely do not move to Florida! And, I agree- we’ve been able to watch all my son’s concerts via livestream, and it makes it much easier to be so far away from him.

  12. I should keep a regular schedule on the weekends because it makes Monday morning hit hard, but I sleep in. And take regular naps. And don’t eat as well as I should. You only live once, I say!

We did get up on Saturday at our regular time, though, because we both had to do a work thing. This only happens a few times throughout the year, so I don’t get grumpy about it, but it meant poor Hannah had yet another walk in the pitch black. Poor thing. She doesn’t see the sun much these days!

    1. Engie, I could have written that exact first paragraph of yours. Sleeping in on weekends… naps… eating… check, check, check. Instead of beating myself up I’m adopting your YOLO attitude.
I’m with Hannah- I hate these dark early morning runs, and it’s even dark when we leave for school now… yuck.

  13. I’d LOVE to sleep-in once in awhile, but my body seldom honors that wish, LOL. I had a long day, yesterday, and a very late night…and I still woke up around 5:00. Sorry about the ISU game last night, but it is exciting that the Cyclones are undefeated (says this Iowa Hawkeye). Great job on the 8-miler! That may be m distance of choice next weekend as I taper for the half marathon on the 20th.

  14. Sometimes I”ll wake up around 5:30 but think “nope! It’s Sunday” and go back to sleep for a few hours. My body likes that!
You just enjoy your undefeated Cyclones over there!

  15. Sounds like you had a great week! I love that you got out for a long trail run!
And how fun that you were able to see AND hear your son perform! 🙂

I love sleeping in on the weekends but it’s not happening right now… I am looking forward to when marathon training is over and the weekends are mine again LOL

    1. Yes, sometimes my schedule just works out that I have to do my long runs on Sundays. Then I sometimes get up even earlier than I do on weekdays! When that happens, I wonder if I’m crazy. But we have to get those runs in, right?

  16. Yay for the run and I’m glad you were able to get back out to your favourite trail.
I’m so glad Paul’s concert went well <3
I do NOT have a good schedule. I sleep in when I can, and wake up early when I have to. I don't lose any sleep (pun very much intended) over keeping a strict routine. Since my husband is often jetlagged, our sleep schedules vary more than the norm anyway. I do the best I can and assume more is better whenever I can squeeze in a few extra hours (or a nap!).

  17. Sorry about the new storm, very scary. Hope you’re OK in it. Lovely to see you getting up to 8 miles, that is a funny distance and always seems quite far to me where then 10 etc aren’t too bad. I had a phase during training for … something … where I’d run my long run on a Thursday as that’s my friend Claire’s day off. But it did get in the way of work a bit! It was nice having the weekend off. But now I’d be glad of the puff in my lungs to do anything as I haul my way back from Covid.

  18. solid progress Jenny, so happy for you! Finger crosses the calf issue is behind you.
I stick to the same schedule everyday not by choice though, even on vacation, I am waking up the same time because i’m so used to it.

  19. It’s nice to see you back on your favorite trail! I felt the same way after yesterday’s bike ride… It seemed a whole lot more difficult than it did two years ago.

How wonderful to be able to livestream your son’s concert when you weren’t able to be there in person.

Stay safe with the impending hurricane!
