walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Between the Years

It’s the last Weekly Rundown of 2023!  The week between Christmas and New Year’s sometimes feels kind of “blah” to me, but this year I’m enjoying it.  Our weather has been cooler than normal (yay!) my son is still home (yay!) and although I do have to work, my daughter is away on a band trip so everything feels… easier. I also took an extra day off exercise because I’m getting ready for two big runs.  Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting!  Let’s see how this week played out.

Monday

Christmas Day-off!  I thought I might do a short run in the afternoon, but instead I took two naps.  No regrets!  It was a really nice day.

Tuesday

4 mile run, followed by obligatory core work (dead bugs and planks.) This was the start of our week of incredible weather- down to the 50s every morning.

Oooh… 50s and cloudy! This felt good.

Wednesday

This would have been a great day for the gym, but it was also the day my daughter left for Rome, and all I could muster the mental energy for was another 4 mile run.

Running is easy. Lifting weights is hard.

Thursday

Okay, the gym!  I pushed and pulled the sled, did squats and deadlifts, then finished with the leg curl and leg extension machine.  I’m still having a nagging pain in my right knee- I need to read the “Knees Over Toes guy” book I got for Christmas!

Friday

Another 4 mile run, followed by core.

Another gorgeous, cool morning. Are we still in Florida???

Saturday

Off, other than mobility (this is the routine I do every day) and stretching.

Yesterday I shared that I asked my daughter to simply send us photos from Rome if she didn’t feel like texting, and she’s proceeded to send the worst photos ever.  Here’s another beauty:

Ah… I see she ate something with ketchup…

I would be wondering if she even made it to Italy, but luckily the chaperones are posting pictures from Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, the Pantheon… I can catch glimpses of her pink hair so I know she’s there!  I’m not sure if she took me very literally and thought this was what I meant by “send photos” (she is a very literal person) of if she knows these are terrible and is chuckling evilly to herself.

Sunday

On tap- Long Run #1!!!  Long Run #2 coming up Monday morning.  I told my husband and son all I’m doing for the next two days is running, reading on the couch under a blanket, eating, and sleeping.  My husband said “Oh, all your favorite things!” Yes!  Eliminate the fluff!  There will be none of this “going to work” or “cooking dinner.”  Pare it down to the essentials.

Are you celebrating tonight? – I’ll be living my dream of staying home and reading on New Year’s Eve.

Happy New Year!

  1. Happy new year! I am glad the weather is cooperating for your long runs! Cool weather makes such a huge difference!

I had a good week of workouts. I ran on Christmas morning, did a CG workout on Tuesday when I was off and another CG workout on Friday but that one was a HIIT every minute on the minute workout and it could not be over with soon enough!! There were 3 blocks with 3 moves and when a block was done I thought, surely the next one can’t be worse. And then it was. Thanks, Caroline. Today I ran 4 miles again and I will hopefully fit a strength workout in tomorrow morning. We are going to the children’s museum and then out to my MIL’s for lunch afterwards. We usually play a dice game in the afternoon on Christmas but we decided to do it on NYE instead. We will be home early and I will observe my usual early bedtime!

Your daughter’s pics… omg. I am sure she is snickering and thinking, ‘well she said to send pictures…’ I’m glad the chaperones are posting lots of photos for you to enjoy!

    1. Yay! I’m glad you were able to get in so many workouts! Yes, there have been many CG workouts where I was cursing her name.
Hope you have a fun day, and an early bedtime sounds like the perfect way to kick off 2024 : )

  2. Have a great run and a Happy New Year! I hope the knee settles down.

I think your daughter gets to the end of the day & thinks oh yeah, gotta take a photo & just grabs whatever is there. Or is really camera shy. 🙂

    1. Yeah, I think my daughter just might not be into taking photos- unlike us bloggers who feel the need to document everything!

    1. The knee is fine while I’m running… but I feel it when I’m walking so it’s making me nervous.
      Happy New Year, Wendy!

  3. Enjoy your perfectly restful time with your book and your blanket! You’ve earned it!

Isn’t that eveyones goal? “When in Italy, eat ketchup!” LOL

    Here’s to a healthy and fit 2024!

    1. Your night is bigger than mine- I’m not going out at all (and I’m perfectly fine with that.) I hope you enjoy it.

  4. Your daughter just cracks me up with her photos! I am sure she is having a blast-how could she not?! Hope your long run went well today. Enjoy your relaxing night tonight! Happy new year’s Jenny

    1. Thank you Deborah! Long run #1 is done, and went mostly well (there’s always a glitch, right?) Happy New Year to you as well!

  5. Your daughter is KILLING ME with these photos. Maybe next time you could clarify “pictures of people, preferably you, standing in front of things that make it clear you’re in Italy.” But, honestly, I am so amused by these photos that maybe you shouldn’t clarify! Maybe she’s just trying to do a day-in-the-life series on the sly!

    1. I think I probably did have to clarify what I meant by “photos.” It’s funny what you would think is obvious, but isn’t obvious to her.

  6. I am enjoying your daughter’s photos! I do hope she’s having fun with them.

I have given in to the post-holiday period, and enjoying the lack of a schedule or to-do list!

  7. I am celebrating tonight! We have houseguests and they are so much fun. We have champagne in the fridge and I have cake in the oven! What could be better?
I hope your daughter is having a great time in Italy, eating Italian ketchup and everything! Lol!

    1. Thank you Kim! I may be sound asleep as everyone else is ringing in 2024… you guys can celebrate and tell me all about it.

  8. Your daughter’s pictures from Italy are just epic; I’ve literally LOL-ed! We celebrate at home with a fun dinner and dessert and usually a movie and a game. My guy stays up (but he does on non-New Year’s nights, too, but I’ve found it’s just not worth it to me. I need my sleep! Lil Momma is talking a big game about staying up late, but I am hoping to talk her into 10pm (which is super late for her) and having some normalcy bring us into 2024. Enjoy your reading, Jenny, and take care of that knee!

    1. Thank you Lindsay! Yes… for the last several years I’ve wanted to go to bed early but stayed up till midnight because of the kids. Maybe this will be my year!

    1. Ha, hope you achieve your goal! In our neighborhood there’s a crazy amount of fireworks going off at midnight… so even if I do go to sleep early I’ll be rudely awakened. That’s okay- I don’t want to be a New Year’s Grinch.

  9. Those pictures are killing me; I want to see them all! The ketchup packet might be even more hilarious than the random person walking by. Really. This is priceless.

We do nothing on NYE. I really need to start a tradition; every year I say that and never do. This year my husband is sick, so staying home is really the only option anyway…but I have so little motivation to be up late or out of my PJs. Most years we cook something special for supper but this year I have literally nothing planned. Maybe some reading?

    1. Elisabeth, I’m already in my pjs and it’s 5 pm. I may have to change briefly because my son and I are thinking of getting subs for dinner (which would require me going to the store.). Hope John feels better soon- Happy New Year!

  10. Ha! That ketchup picture. I did get a few good pictures when my daughter went to Europe, but it does seem like I take x10 more pictures than she does! Wow, a trip to Europe for the band?? That sounds amazing! I’ve been MIA for a few weeks… what it the performance? Concert band?
My husband threw his back out this week (so glad it didn’t happen on our ski trip!!) so it’s been very low key around here. I have been staying up far too late watching TV, so I guess I’ll be all set to watch the ball drop tonight!

    1. Ugh! Well, my husband sprained his ankle so he’s been pretty cranky. I hope yours feels better soon.
The band did have a short concert performance, but the main event is, they’re marching in the New Year’s Day parade tomorrow morning. The band goes once every four years, so everyone gets a chance to go once in high school.
Have fun watching the ball drop! Not sure if I’ll be awake to see it or not.

      1. Our high school had Disney World as their big event (every 4 years), but many years ago they did go to London to perform for New Years Day. I can’t even imagine how crazy that would have been to chaperone that trip! But wow, it would have been really cool to go. I hope your daughter’s trip is great!

  11. Haha your daughter’s photos of her Rome trip are classic! It feels like she’s sending them ironically like she knows they’re ridiculous and that’s why she’s taking them!

I wrapped up the year with a run on my favorite little mountain and then I’m going out this afternoon to a nearby tiki bar with my parents. I like going out on NYE but being home well before it gets crazy so this should be an ideal plan! Hope you enjoy your B2B long runs!

  12. Yes, I think that’s the perfect plan. I definitely wouldn’t want to be out driving around late tonight. Of course, I’m old so going out at all doesn’t really entice me. Enjoy your time with your parents!!!

  13. OMG, my son sends the same kind of pictures! What is with these kids????

Your NYE plans sound perfect. We are doing the same. We leave for the Keys on Tuesday, so I’m trying to get all caught up.

  14. I love your daughter’s sense of humour! At least you know she’s alive! 🙂
We spent our NYE in bed – I detest celebrating stuff “on command”. I slept a solid 10 hours which at my age sounds much better than partying, ha!
Enjoy your long run no. 2 today. I’m doing intervals, 9 x 450m on the track.

  15. Ha! your daughter’s pic…too funny. we are heading to Italy in March with my sister, her two kids, her husband, and my dad! Can’t wait. We’ll be doing Rome and Amalfi coast.

50’s and cloudy! Sounds like London 🙂 Great job on your fitness this week and the big runs!! Well done.

  16. Haha, your daughter really is too funny… that pic! LOL

Sounds like you just kept going “between the years”. Way to show up for yourself.
