walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Bulletproof

Well, the universe decided to throw me a curveball this week (although, in retrospect I should have seen it coming). I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown (thanks, ladies!) Let’s just see what happened…

Monday

First day of school! I’ve learned over the years to keep the first morning of school as simple as possible, so I didn’t run. But! I decided to run after work instead!

This was… not a great idea. The heat index was probably around 100 degrees. I put ice in my hat and bra, which helped at first but by the last couple miles I was seriously overheated. Unfortunately, that was not the biggest issue.

My left hip, which had been “niggling” at me, became downright cranky- irritated to the point where it was unpleasant to run. ARG! This is the same side as the hamstring that plagued me for months. I started to get upset about it, and then I thought, “No! This is completely under my control! I have to work hard to MAKE THIS HIP BULLETPROOF.”

Tuesday

I started the morning with Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, and then hit all my hip stability exercises. I haven’t been doing them often enough, but I will from now on!

Wednesday

I had planned a longer run for this day, but decided to take it to the Stairmaster instead. 75 minutes of climbing! This was hard, but probably not as hard as running in the heat.

Did it.

Thursday

Same as Tuesday- CG deadbug workout, hip stability exercises, and also added an upper body workout. At night…FOOTBALL!

First halftime show of the year!

It was hot, muggy, and crowded. The other team brought about a zillion fans and they infiltrated our side of the stadium, which made me cranky! I think I liked it better before we were state champions.

…but the sunset was beautiful!

Friday

Leg day at the gym! Here I am, looking strong (?) at the squat bar.

Saturday

Let’s try running! 4 miles of… semi-pain free running. My hip didn’t hurt- I could feel a little irritation, but it was better than Monday. I take that lingering irritation as a gentle reminder not to slack off on my exercises again.

Hooray! Running > Stairmaster.

Sunday

On tap… hip exercises, of course! I also have to buckle down and take my CEU classes to renew my massage license. Some of them are interesting, and some are tedious- required classes that we take every two years, forever and ever. Here’s a sample test question from my required Ethics class:

Am I supposed to take this seriously???

How was your week? Who do you think the founding father of ethics was?- I think the correct answer was supposed to be “Hippocrates” but I passed the test anyway.

Tuesday Topics and FIGS!

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. Ouch, I’m so sorry about your hip. So annoying!
WTF about that ethics class???!! 😵 Who do they think it’s for?!

We’re experiencing some Florida style heat for a few weeks. A few days into our holiday, Italy got a new heatwave in the form of an ”anticiclone africano” and for a day or two we were up to 35-37C. Now we have 30-33C most days. I’m not hating it but need to stay on top of hydration, electrolytes, having ways to cool down etc. Hiking is the best, with the shade of the forest.

    1. Oh, shade makes all the difference. It’s extra cruel here because we have almost no shade. I’m envious- I want to be hiking in an Italian forest!

  2. Noooo!! Not your hip, Jenny!! I hope the exercises help stabilize things.

I think you’re supposed to make 50% of the answers to a multiple choice question obviously wrong–and I like the choices the test writer made! (I think your choice is the correct one–I’d have picked the same one too, anyway!)

    1. Well, they did a good job of providing “obviously wrong” answers! I hope the rest of the tests are this amusing- taking these classes over and over again gets really boring.

  3. Don’t mind me, I’m just stuck back on the fact your spent 75 minutes on the stairmaster. I am gobsmacked. You have tenacity I can only dream of my friend.
Hope the hip continues to improve!

  4. Ugh! I hope renewed diligence with the hip exercises makes your hip happy! I can’t fathom 75 min on the stair climber.

I’m so glad the state bar I am licensed in doesn’t require CLE but I get a lot any from speaking and attending conferences.

    1. Ugh, I’m so tired of these classes! But- I’m taking one today that I think will be more interesting (not the same old required classes that I’ve taken ten times now)
I think rest and the exercises will do the trick on my hip. Fingers crossed!

  5. Omg DJT as a choice for the father of ethics! Lolololol. I guess the test designer has a sense of humor. Those are some tough questions. Ethics are impeotant but is it important to know who the father of ethics is? Um no. Not for a masseuse or most people!!

I am sorry your hip is acting up. I hope you get it back to a pain free state! But 75 min on a stair climber. Omg!! I could not do that!!

I was in NY for part of the week for work. It was a good trip overall and will be my only trip this week since my trip the last week of the month got rescheduled. Woo hoo! Fall is going to be travel heavy but future Lisa will have to deal with that while summer Lisa enjoys being home the last week while the kids are at my parents!!

    1. Okay, glad Summer Lisa is having a good week! And I agree- ethics is important, but do we really need to learn about Socrates? IS THAT RELEVANT???

  6. Good luck with your hip too! Hopefully taking it easy and doing some hip exercises will help and get you back running soon. You know I’m going through something similar right now and I hate it!

  7. Well, that had me stumped, I was SURE the founding father of ethics were either a or c.
WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THAT.
Anyway. Glad you figured out your hip issues – that’s no fun. It feels like you get one thing solved (digestion, hammie) and then something else pops up. Well, that’s the running life, I guess! As we age we have to be so careful about mobility and stability and all that stuff that doesn’t come up when we are young!
I am impressed that you did 75 minutes on the stairmaster. Yeeeeesh. You do look strong at the squat rack!

  8. Interesting that they have you take a test on ethics! I suppose there are a few unethical massage therapists out there…for those clients who want the happy ending, lol. Have you ever had any inappropriate requests? Or clients?

I hope your hip niggle niggles itself away! I swear, being an aging runner is like playing Wack-a-Mole. No matter how much maintenance I do, something has to act up. That hip adductor pain yesterday? So random…

    1. Yes, that’s a good way to describe it- something else is always waiting to flare up. And, to answer your question- I think every massage therapist has dealt with inappropriate clients at some point- but luckily it doesn’t happen often.

  9. My hip issue comes and goes (it’s more in the hip vicinity…TFL?). I seldom feel anything when I’m running, but the achyness shows up several hours post-run. Biking REALLY helps stretch out the muscle, and I felt awesome after my long ride yesterday. I hope your discomfort takes a hike!

  10. Is it weird that I wish my apartment gym had a stairmaster? I haven’t been feeling the treadmill lately to get in extra elevation/power hiking practice but I think I would enjoy doing that on the stairmaster more!

I hope your hip improves. Just gotta keep doing those exercises! Way to go on running in that heat on Monday though! It was actually pleasant for my 16 mile long run yesterday — we had a brief cooldown so the high was only in the mid-80s where I was running and there were big puffy clouds that blocked some of the sun so I didn’t feel like I was being baked! But unfortunately, the heat is far from over.

    1. Yes, if I can’t run, the stairmaster is my cross training of choice. Sally McRae also recommends it to get some practice with elevation. Sadly smaller gyms don’t usually have them. Well- you can put the treadmill on a big incline and hike away!
Mid 80s is cool for you! But yes- the heat is far from over. Sigh.

  11. STOP IT WITH THAT QUESTION!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME????

I would be sending very hostile emails to the test company. Then again, maybe it’s meant to weed out people who should be in client-facing positions.

We had our first game on Friday but it was away, and our band didn’t travel with the team. We also lost. Our first home game is next week. We will be serving dinner to the band kids, which is my favorite thing to do.

Your hip! We have got to get that under control! Seriously!

    1. Yes, our band doesn’t travel to away games unless it’s a playoff. Next week is an away game for us, boo.
I’ll relay your message to my hip! Thanks : )

  12. Lol thanks for the reminder that I need to get started on my CPA CE. I’m paraphrasing of course, but the ethics test will usually have a question like “is it OK to steal?” followed by “how many years can you get in jail for stealing?” So subtle. For tests where the subject is super boring, I have resorted to just answering at random and changing my answers until I pass the test.

Here’s to Project Bulletproof Hip. I’m looking forward to getting the extreme summer heat outta here.

  13. Yes, I’ll be doing a lot of guessing on these test answers! I mean… why not. You get as many chancea as you want to pass- I don’t think anyone cares.

  14. Football! I can imagine how hot that game was, but how fun to see the marching band again. Did your school win?? My son just went out to lunch with his former high school band director. My son got a text from him out of the blue so it was nice that they were able to meet up. The band director said he missed my son and his friends “energy” at band practice! Sorry your hip is being wonky. Do you walk on the stair machine or go faster than that? I saw a lady doing a faster “trot” on it which impressed me! I think I would trip trying to go that fast.

    1. Hahahaha! I do NOT “trot” on the stairmaster!!! I go at a faster walking pace, and that’s hard enough.
Our team did not win! Somehow we were playing a very big team, not from our district, nationally ranked #7. We’ve heard that they’re throwing in some games like that his year- but it doesn’t count against us in the standing since it wasn’t a district game.

  15. Oh Jenny, I’m sorry to hear that your hip is now bothering you. Hopefully giving it a little TLC and buckling down on your hip exercises will help.

I hope your daughter and husband are off to a great start in their school year!

    1. My daughter is off to a great start- not so sure about my husband. But he’ll get there.
My hip is already feeling better… I just have to stay vigilant.

  16. I’ve saved the Deadbug workout – fun fact, I’ve started doing Caroline Girvan workouts and I am hooked. Hooray. I haven’t come across the Deadbug one yet, so I’m glad you linked it. I hope your hip continues to improve. Be careful running in that heat – that kind of heat can wreak havoc on your body. 75 minutes on a stairs machine sounds like a lot. Why am I not surprised thought?

I’ve not run in probably about 3 weeks and my ‘bruised’ feeling of my spine is no better. Hmm. I’m so annoyed, and I’m doing my exercises. Last week was one of the busy types – lots of good things happening, but it was a lot. I’ve ramped up my walking four miles to daily (when I can). I’d been running every other day per Coach’s request and it didn’t dawn on me until recently that since I was not running – I could do that daily without getting in trouble with my PT husband.

Um, no idea who the father of ethics was – prob not Donald though. That test is whack. What on earth?

    1. Caroline Girvan is great- I should do more of her workouts. She has a hip thrust once that’s a killer, but so effective.
I’m sorry your back issue hasn’t improved! Have you had an xray? A stress fracture would probably show up by now. At least you can walk- and 4 miles of walking is a lot (it takes a long time, compared to running!)

  17. I’m doing some PT on my bad leg and every time I go I think about you rehabbing your foot and leg and tell myself that I can do it. You’re my inspiration!

  18. I’m glad your hip issues seemed to hopefully be short lived and already on the upswing!! I’m with the others- 75 min on the stairmaster?! omg. Also with the others on WHAT is up with that question?!? Totally bizarre!! Happy back to school to you! It’s always kind of bittersweet when summer ends, but life does often feel easier to navigate when we have the structure of schools, routines, etc! I think I’d probably feel a lot different if I didn’t have to work in the summer. My mom was a teacher and I LOVED the summers with her home. I do NOT really enjoy juggling work + kids off, though it’s much easier now that they’re older. Wonder if the hospital would go for a “summers off for nurses” schedule? hehehe.

  19. Hippocratic oath so that’s what would think. But seriously Trump was a choice.

Sorry about the hip. I hope the exercises help.

  20. Sousaphones!!!

That course looks deadly. I have to re-certificate as a Leader in Running Fitness every three or so years – there’s a horrible safeguarding course which you can see is all based on vile things that people have done, and a really long and tedious first aid course where I disagree with an answer in one of the sections so always have to re-do it to get my 100% score!
