walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Everything is Awesome!

I don’t want to say this injury is behind me, because that would be tempting fate a little too much.  But let’s just say “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie has been running through my head, and life seems good!  I’m linking up as always with Kim and Deborah for this Weekly Rundown.  Here’s how it all played out…

Sunday

I walked one mile and ran 3. Everything felt good!

Monday

I did lower body strength at home, including single leg exercises and squats.  One of the (few) things I’m proud of from my work this summer is the progress I made in the one leg sit-to-stand.  It’s one of the foundation exercises on Sally McRae’s app and also one of the hip stability exercises from Brad Beer’s book.  You start sitting on a chair or bench, and stand up using one leg, then sit back down, stand up again, etc. only on one leg.  When I first started I could only do five reps on each leg- now I can do 36 reps!!!  At least something has improved.

I also did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout..  I’m really tired of it by now!

Tuesday

I walked 3 miles…

… and then did a different core workout!  I did Caroline Girvan’s Standing Abs Workout, and I liked it.  At least, I liked doing something different.

Wednesday

Again, I walked one mile and ran 3.  Still feeling good!

Thursday

I did my single leg exercises, and another core workout.  This one Engie recommended, MadFit Standing Core Workout..  I liked this one too!  Then I had time for 20 minutes of walking.

At night we watched the Dolphins game, which was a complete fiasco.  We lost, and our quarterback got ANOTHER CONCUSSION.  The poor guy will be out for… ever?  The rest of the season?  I feel really bad for him, and now our season is a shambles after only the second game.

Friday

Gym day!  It was a very squat-focused workout, because I skipped deadlifts.  My low back is nagging at me again, and deadlifts sadly make it worse.  After squats and Bulgarian split squats I did some core (abs and low back machines.)

At night I planned to go to our high school football game, but it rained so much that the band couldn’t play (so I didn’t go.)  They did manage to play in the rain and our team won!  This was our homecoming, and last year’s homecoming was completely rained out.  September outdoor events just shouldn’t be a thing in South Florida.

Saturday

This was a big day- I walked one mile and ran 4!!!  I’m getting there!

At night we watched the Baylor game.  FINALLY.  A game where it didn’t rain, no one got injured, and we WON!  At least the football week ended on a high note.

Sunday

Off!  Sleeping in and waffles will be involved (obviously.)

So, it was a good week.  Moving forward, I’m going to cautiously try running every other day.  Running every third day was great to get me back from this injury, but I can’t do that forever!

How was your week?  Were there any moments where you sang “Everything is Awesome?”

  1. YAY!!! Cautiously optimistic for you, how wonderful it will be to be back to running all you want without pain or injury! ENJOY THOSE WAFFLES AND THOSE RUNS.

Question: Who takes your running pics? Your husband? I like seeing them, you look so strong.

Note: I feel like my wording on my comment on the last post could have been better. I said that you made a mistake, and I should have said, I really liked your friend’s perspective. I know I have given similar advice to my daughter, and my intention was always to support her.

    1. No offense taken, Julie! I appreciate your perspective. To answer your question- I take m own running pictures. If you really look closely, you will see there are three or four places where these photos occur- these are places at the end of my run where I can prop my phone, like fire hydrants. Then I take a video, and a screen shot from those.

  2. Nice job, Jenny!! So glad for you!
Those one-legged sit-to-stands and then sit down again are a very effective workout! Thanks for the reminder, I need to start doing them again!

  3. Yay for pain free running! I am so happy to hear this! I was sorry to hear about your QB getting another concussion. We were watching the game where he got the other bad concussion… that was so scary. This guy has been through a lot and I worry about the long term impacts of multiple concussions… 🙁

My week was really hard. It was a really intense week between travel and so dang many meetings. But my 10 mile race went great yesterday! My pace was lower than I had expected. I was nervous about the race since I felt so tired that morning after an intense week! I am glad the race is behind me. Now I can just kind of take it easier and do a shorter long run of 5-6 on the weekend.

    1. Yay! I want to hear more about your race! Very glad it went well. Yes- Tua has had three concussions in the past two years. People are calling for him to quit football because of the long-term impacts. Poor guy.

  4. So happy for you.

Everything is not awesome but greatly improved or I’m getting used to pain.

    The weather has been wonderful.

    1. I know it’s not really funny but I’m laughing at your comment, “I’m getting used to pain.” Maybe I just need to get more used to pain. Anyway I’m glad it’s getting better and you’re having good weather!

  5. YES! YES! YES! 3 is better than 2 and 4… is better than 3!
You’re racking them up and improving…. and I’m feeling inspired to get in a sweaty run myself today!
    Happy Sunday, Jenny!

    1. Thank you Maya- I just took a nap on the couch with my cat. It doesn’t get much better than that! Hope you were able to run today.

  6. Hooray!! So glad to hear everything is awesome (ha and now that song is in my head). I’m still injured so everything is ..not awesome here. But I’m trying to make the most of it and start weight training a few times a week while i can’t run. So things could be worse! Can’t wait to get back out there!

    1. I know Melissa- you are keeping incredibly active in spite of your injury. Think how strong you’ll be when you’re able to run again!

    1. I’ve discovered the key- standing core classes have to include dumbbells. Otherwise I feel like they don’t do anything.

  7. YAYYY!!!! I’m glad to hear your running is feeling better! We were trying to do those single leg sit/stands. I could do them (albeit a bit awkwardly), but Jim couldn’t, LOL. I told him it might be one of those things that “guys can’t do,” ha!

  8. Yay so glad to see you are returning to pain free running! I feel like the standing core exercises don’t hit my core enough-I am probably doing them wrong lol or I just like the ones on my back better for engagement

    1. Well- I don’t think the standing core workouts will ever be as good as deadbugs. But these are pretty good, and because you use dumbbells it worked my arms as well.

  9. Thank you for the ear worm! Now I”m singing that in my head!

I am so glad you seem to be feeling better. I am cautiously optimistic with you!

The whole Tua thing makes me so angry. He has his whole life ahead of him. I realize this is his dream and his passion, but he is not going to be alive to enjoy anything if he keeps this up. 🙁 This is why football is so hard to watch for me!

    1. I agree Jenn- it can be hard to watch. Especially the high school games- every time a kid gets tackled I imagine it’s my own son. Ugh.

  10. I’m so happy for you that running is feeling awesome again and I hope that continues!

I really like standing core classes, there’s one I take often on the Nike Training Club app that’s geared towards runners and it’s less than 10 minutes so it’s easy to squeeze in!

  11. It’s SO FUNNY you mention this song. I sing it regularly in the mornings to pump the kids up for school (they’re usually not impressed). One day this week my son was eating breakfast when I came out of my room in the morning and he was listening to an audiobook on noise-cancelling headphones. I pulled one headphone off his ear and starting singing: Everything is awesome, everything is cool when you’re part of a team. It got a chuckle and smile out of him.

And this is so, so awesome that you’re running pain free. Can’t wait to follow along as you ramp back up into more consistent running.
Too bad about the rain-out for homecoming and the Dolphins quarterback. I guess everything can’t be awesome?

    1. Yes, I guess every single thing actually isn’t awesome. And, I can just imagine my daughter’s reaction if I sang that song in the morning. She would not be impressed.

  12. So glad it’s progressing well! what a journey! hope you are on the other side now. will try those core workouts.
when I have a good run, I feel like everything is awesome which is awesome. 🙂

  13. Such great news! I hope everything continues in this direction. Everything is Awesome really should be the theme music for runners when all is going well! It’s such a good mood boost 🙂 Bummer about the rain especially on homecoming weekend! Hope the kids still had fun.

  14. Great news Jenny! Happy to see you out running again. And I feel you on the dead bug workout. I’m so tired of the music, ha! But it really is effective…

  15. That’s great news that your running has been going well!

You know I just did some single-legged stand up sit downs after reading about them. 😉 Thanks for the reminder. I’ll add them back into my routine.

  16. I have been singing that song ever since I saw this post’s title yesterday 😛 seriously, so happy things are moving in the right direction for you! I have been doing some single-leg work in PT (along with toe yoga and all this ankle stuff) and it really does remind me how important balance is, haha sigh wobble

  17. I love the song “Everything Is Awesome.” Such a bop! And yay for having such a successful week of workouts! I will have to try that Girvan standing abs workout.

Football has so many ups and downs! Argh! Why do we put ourselves through this?!

  18. Oh, I am so glad things are looking up and your calf is being calm. Great news, Jenny.
I also think it’s amazing that you can do all the one leg sit-to-stands… practice makes perfect!!
