walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Getting There

Hooray! After two weeks of feeling pretty horrible, I finally started to feel like my old self this week. I wasn’t exactly killing it in my workouts,  but the spark is starting to come back. Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown! Here we go…

Sunday

Since I missed so much work while I was sick, I decided to work on Sunday. I knew I was feeling better when I opted to get up early and run outside- 3 hot miles before work.

Monday

“Never miss a Monday” is NOT one of my mottos! It had been a week since I had a day off, so this was a rest day.

Tuesday

Leg day at the gym! I did my usual squats, glute press machine, and added hip thrusts to the mix. I ended this with core and side planks with leg lifts.

Wednesday

4 lovely air conditioned miles on the treadmill at the gym! I ended this run with some core work.

Thursday

In the morning I did the Caroline Girvan dead bug workout, and after work I went to the gym for upper body. Bench press, overhead press, rows, and reverse flys. I really pushed myself, working to failure on most exercises (not benchpress, obviously- I’m not getting pinned under the bar!)

Resting between sets.

Friday

4 miles on the treadmill- and I added some tempo intervals! Trying to figure out my tempo pace was pretty challenging- I can’t say I nailed it, but it was a start- the start of my “summer of speed”??? I followed the run with some core, and side planks with leg lifts.

Saturday

Core, and hip stability exercises. Wow, those are boring- but I need them. I feel like my hips are getting stronger!

Sunday

On tap- “long” run outside! I’m planning 5 miles, and I’m bringing icy cold water in my hydration vest. I’ll get out nice and early and hopefully the heat won’t kill me.

How was your week? Were most of your workouts inside or outside?

It’s time for Tuesday Topics, which I host with Jenn from Runs With Pugs. This week’s topic: What does “springing forward”

  1. Whoop! Nothing like coming back after being sidelined. I’ve been more than happy to keep all of my weekday cardio indoors. I’m finishing the hiking challenge this weekend, and the two routes on my schedule (one done today and one left for tomorrow) are both in the woods and shaded, so the weather really doesn’t matter.

Let’s hear it for the treadmill, AC, and ice!

    1. Treadmill, AC, ice… and shade. Shade helps tremendously! I hope your hike today was fun, and now you’re done with the challenge! You’ll have to come up with a new one.

  2. I’m so glad to hear that you are feeling better! You had a great week of workouts, especially those TM runs inside. There’s no shame in that! As you probably know, we’ve had Florida-like heat and humidity for the past couple of weeks. Seriously, you can keep it!

  3. Yay, so glad you’re feeling more like yourself again, Jenny! That spark coming back is everything. I love how you’re easing in but still getting solid work done. Here’s to a strong, sweaty “summer of speed”! 🔥💪

  4. I’m glad you are feeling better!! I ran on Wednesday before we went to the airport but that is it for formal workouts. I pushed a 40 lb 4yo around Chicago so considered that my workout each day!! I am going for a run this morning and it will be unpleasant due to humidity. And I am really tired as we had to get up at 12:30 for a tornado warning. It was looking back so we brought the kids down to the basement which is something we have never had to do! We just got high winds and could tuck them back into bed at 1 but I did not need that wake up! I will definitely nap today!!

    1. Yes- I saw that in your blog post- oof. I hope you had a decent run and I hope you got an amazing nap today!

  5. Yay for feeling better!

This was a week for indoor workouts, but it was decent enough for one outdoor run with Scooby. Now it’s so humid though.

    1. Yes, I had an outdoor run this morning- luckily it was overcast so I was saved from heatstroke. I guess it was hot everywhere this week!

  6. Lol, I will only do chest press with dumbbells, specifically because I am terrified of being trapped under the bar! Since I work out so early in the morning, no one would be around to help me. My older son was just telling me that at his gym a guy did get stuck doing decline press (or maybe incline press, I don’t know) and he had to help him get the weight off, like 250 pounds or something. THIS IS MY FEAR. Not that I’m in danger of ever lifting 250 pounds but still.
I’m glad you’re feeling better! In answer to your question, my workouts are always inside, unless you count dog walks, which I do not (so slow! So long! soooo slooowwww).

    1. Ha, yes- I think if I had to have someone rescue me from under the bar, I would never be able to show my face in the gym again. Especially since I’m not QUITE (ahem) lifting 250 pounds.

  7. The mobility and stability exercises are boring but they really do work and keep me feeling better too. Glad you had a much better week! Good call on the AC run in the gym. Just too hot

  8. You are back! Sounds like a solid week of workouts and runs and hopefully you can continue with that this week.

Most of my runs were outside but I had two short treadmill “doubles” midweek (2 miles each) just to work on power hiking and catch up on my favorite podcast, Your Diet Sucks. Yesterday I went up to the mountains for my very slow long run and I was very grateful it was only in the mid-70s because the 13.6 miles with 3,000 feet of elevation gain was enough of a strugglefest without the desert heat! My biggest struggle on summer long runs is eating enough — around mile 7 I couldn’t really choke down anything anymore so I relied on the liquid calories in my water for the rest, but it was a long time to go without eating anything and I’m sure I would have felt better if I had kept eating every 30 minutes!

    1. What liquid calories do you use? I love the Tailwind with caffeine. I agree- it’s hard to eat when it’s so hot. Mid-70s sounds amazing… 3000 feet of elevation gain does not. My body wouldn’t know what to do with that!

      1. I do Tailwind (watermelon flavor) or Gnarly (cherry cola flavor). I heard Tailwind is coming out with a new flavor for the summer so I’m curious to see what it’ll be!

  9. You made a really strong comeback! It’s hard being down and not feeling well, but it’s how we recover that matters!

Keep it going! But take it easy! You don’t want any setbacks!

All my runs were outside and the gym was inside. And that worked out ok. It’s ridiculously hot, but what can you do?

    1. I know- all we can do it get out there EARLY. And, carrying water today really made a big difference. I used to not do that for a 5 mile run, but I’m going to from now on.

  10. You have such great willpower and resilience, Jenny.

I had an up and down week. Thankfully, I’m ending up. I think it was a mixture of so many feelings about so many things WHILE I was PMSing. Thankfully, I’m feeling more like normal the last few days.

I didn’t exercise much at all last week, but I’m looking forward to getting into a routine with it over the summer again. And in October I’ll do the walking club again!

    1. Well, I’m glad you’re ending “up.” And, summer is just starting for you. I hope you get into a summer routine that you love.

  11. Wow, you’re back and at it aren’t you! I ran a few days inside this week because of the heat and then really enjoyed getting back out there when it was only in the 80s in the morning. It was still hot (For me) but so much better than inside!

    1. I agree- running inside is great, but then it also feels good to get outside again. I had a hot outside run this morning but it was fun.

  12. I’m glad you’re feeling better. I’m wondering if I need to be doing more (or at least SOME) hip stability work. Those exercises are SO boring, and it’s really easy to skip (or simply forget) doing them.

    1. Yes, it feels really hard to fit them in. Everything else feels more important… but I think I really need them.

  13. It was hot… Florida hot so I skipped a few runs… I don’t use the treadmill… ever!

Glad to hear that you are feeling better.

The summer of speed is a good motto. Can I steal it?

  14. Welcome back! You seem to be in good form! Working to failure is such a good feeling, isn’t it?
I think I’m going to start doing the side plank with a leg lift, and I’ll definitely do it while we’re in Italy. I realised it must be good for my hips, and it’s such a good (almost) all-in-one exercise.
I had a good week back after our trip to Sweden but I was so out of energy after poor sleep, travelling etc so my performance has been quite subpar. But I enjoyed some good squats. I’ll be back to the weekly rundown on Sunday.

    1. I hope your trip was fun! Everyone needs a break sometimes- I don’t think you’ll have much problem getting back into your normal workouts. And yes- the side planks with leg lifts are great.

  15. My workouts were entirely indoors because we’ve been having some Florida-like heat and humidity. I have managed to get the dog out for her usual 1-1.5 mile morning walk, but that’s about it for me outside! I wouldn’t mind the heat, but that humidity gets me every time.

  16. Sounds like things are progressing nicely for you this week! Glad to hear you are feeling back to normal. You do get a lot of use out of your gym membership which is great! I hope to hit my gym twice a week and any more than that is kinda rare.

  17. Mondays are often my rest day too! Its just a day of the week, clearly you don’t need to workout just b/c the calendar says Monday when you need rest 🙂

Glad you are feeing better. Well done on that gym time!
