walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- I Ran a Race!

Hello!  It’s Sunday so of course I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Rundown.  I’m also joining San and our fearless and creative NaBLoPoMo Crew for 30 posts, one for each day of November.

The week started with some aches and pains, and ended with a race!  In between, there was very little running.

If you remember, last week my sleep was terrible, I had a mysterious pain in my hip, AND, my foot hurt.  Believe it or not, I don’t mention every single ache and pain on this blog.  Between work and working out, there’s always something.  The outside of my foot had been hurting after every trail run, and I deduced that it was probably from my trail shoes.  I hoped that a lot of rest would heal it up before my race on Saturday.  Let’s see how that worked out…

Monday

Leg day at the gym!  I did this more out of fear than anything else.  I didn’t get to the gym last week, and I knew if I took TWO weeks off, I’d be so sore I wouldn’t be able to sit down the next time I went.

Squats, deadlifts, abs, and hip stability exercises.

Tuesday

Sigh.  Instead of running, I did this:

Oh, YOU again.

40 long minutes.  I don’t like the stairclimber, but I like the endorphins I get from it- ALMOST like running.  I followed this up with the abs machines.

Wednesday

In the morning I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, then spent the rest of the day grieving my loss of faith in humanity.  I was going to wait one more day, but in the afternoon I decided a run would be just the thing.

3 miles, and nothing hurt.  Victory!

Thursday

I did this MadFit standing abs and arms workout.  I’ve really been neglecting upper body lately!  And I did my hip stability exercises.

Friday

I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, and that was it.

Saturday

Race day!  This was a race in the same state park where I ran the Dunes 50K two years ago.  Luckily no dunes in this one- we ran a a 4.3 mile loop on a trail over and over again.

I ran 27 miles!  Well.  According to my Garmin.  My official mileage was 25.8, but let’s not quibble.  Let’s just say I ran an ultra and call it a day, ha ha.  Part of the discrepancy is due to the fact that I took a wrong turn TWICE and went off course (more details coming in the race recap tomorrow!)

Given the fact that my training for this event was sub-par- my longest run was 15 miles- I’m very happy with 27.  That’s somewhere between my conservative prediction, and what I was thinking in my wildest dreams (if the weather was great-it wasn’t- and if I were feeling amazing, I had toyed with the idea of running 50K.) Anyway, I’ll happily take 27 miles (or, 25.8- whatever.)

I ran this race in my road shoes.  It was a little dicey at times, but I think it was a good call, because my foot was fine.  Next on the agenda: finding new trail shoes.

Sunday

On tap- oh, maybe a little 10 mile run.  JUST KIDDING.  I will obviously be taking today off.  I’ll sleep in, eat waffles and enjoy some football.

How was your week?  Do you have any races coming up?

    1. you had 12 hours to run as many loops as you wanted. Obviously I tapped out early. When I was home napping on the couch I thought “There are still people out there running!” I’m hoping to do it next year and go further.

  1. Congrats, Jenny! That’s amazing – both race time and Garmin time!! With the build up bumps in the road you experienced, it’s amazing that you were able to do so much on the day! I hope you catch some rest today and enjoy those waffles!

    1. Oh yes, I’m getting plenty of rest. I slept for over eight hours and now I’m thinking of taking a little nap, ha. Thank you for the kind words!

  2. Whoa! You ran way farther than I thought you might! That is some serious mileage! I am glad the race went well overall!

Since I was off for a couple of days, I ran more than usual. I ran 6 miles Wed, 3 on Wed and 4 yesterday. I was thinking I would run today but it’s raining and I’m not a run in the rain kind of person unless I am seriously training for something. And I’m not – just a 10k on Thanksgiving which doesn’t require real training!

    1. I’ll run in the rain- but it’s usually so warm here that it feels good. My husband is like you- he hates rainy runs. So, you ARE training for a race, a 10k on Thanksgiving. But since you recently ran a 10 mile race, you’re already trained for this one.

    1. Yes- I said 20 miles but that was my low prediction. Privately I was hoping to go much further than that. Recap coming tomorrow.

  3. WOOHOOOO 27!!!! I have never ran more than 26.2 (well, I guess the watch says like 26.4 or whatever but you know what i mean!!!) AMAZING!! I’m so glad you were able to have a good day.

    1. Thank you SHU! And, you definitely could have run more than 26.2- at the end of your marathon you could have gone a little more. But why would you want to, ha ha.

  4. 27 miles!! Well done, Jenny! That’s more than I expected!
How you managed to go off course TWICE in a loop race sounds intriguing 🤣
    Can’t wait for the details!

    1. I know Catrina- I went off course twice in the SAME PLACE. And I almost did it again the third time. I felt like an idiot, until I found out other people did it too.

  5. Jenny!!!! 27 miles!!!! Look at you goooooooooooooo!!!!! That’s more than a marathon! I thought you’d be conservative and tap out at 10…
I feel so proud like you’re my kid :)!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, going for a run on Wednesday was the perfect decision <3

  6. So happy for you!!!!!!!!!!

That is amazing that you only ran 15 miles and were able to stretch it to 27!!

    Bring on that 50 miler!!

  7. Congrats Jenny! What an accomplishment! I’m not sure how you go off course on a loop course, but that is something I would do, lol. I’m glad it went so well for you!

  8. Congrats on 27 miles — that’s a lot, especially for going up to 15 in training! And it definitely counts as an ultra, my trail marathon in July was actually 27.5 miles on my watch so I consider it as one of my ultra finishes. I can’t wait to hear more in your recap!

My week was…not great for obvious reasons, but as far as running goes, it was really good. I got in a few longer than usual weekday runs and then my race sweep route was half marathon distance (well, it was actually 12.7 miles but I couldn’t leave it that close to a half marathon so I dropped all the flags and ribbons I picked up along the course at the aid station and ran the last little bit to get to 13.1 hahaha) so I ended the week with 44 miles, which is the most I’ve had since mid September!

    1. I would have done that too, I’m pretty sure! Sounds like you had a great running week- and that’s important. No matter what else happens, we still have running.

  9. Go you!! That’s a big number of miles to rack up! Well done. I had to laugh at your comment about it’s “always something”. Right? I could be here all day listing what seemed out of whack each day for me. 😆 But yay on us getting back out there and getting it done. I will use you for inspiration on my gym workouts. My PT said I should not fear the Smith Machine. I’m going to give it a try (and blame him if I hurt myself. Hahaha!).

    1. Actually the Smith machine is great, and you probably won’t hurt yourself. I should get back to it myself. And yes, if I listed every ache and pain (my wrist, my thumb, my low back) it would be insane.

  10. Wow, you ran a marathon+ !!! That’s AMAZING. I hope your waffles today tasted amazing, and that you have good luck shopping for trail shoes.

    1. Thanks Julie! My waffles were delicious, and I haven’t started the tail shoe shopping yet- hmm, maybe that’s what I’ll do on Wednesday when I’m off work!

  11. Congratulations!! I’m glad everything cooperated for your race! 27 miles is amazing!

Good look on the new shoe quest!

And on coping with the rest of the week’s news.

    1. Thank you Engie! I’m not sure this one will be as exciting- running a 4.3 mile loop might sound monotonous. But I tried!

  12. You ran an ultra!!!! I’m so proud of you! I love it!

I hope to run a turkey trot in two weeks, but we will see. I’m not super excited about it, but I also can’t imagine missing it, either.

  13. Yay Jenny! I got behind on fully reading posts this weekend but I had peeked in to see how you did! You’re amazing!! SO happy to hear that it went well! Now off to read the official recaps… 🙂

  14. I am not a big fan of the Stairmaster either, but I do like the occasional stationary bike, because I can read – so maybe I should give the stairs a go. Since I got my new phone, I realized that my old phone tracked my distance differently than my new iPhone. So, I’ve not been running 4.5 miles every other day? What now?
