First of all, a HUGE thank you to everyone who commented on my last post. The comment section was a treasure trove of positivity and wisdom. “You are the expert in you,” “Keep the main thing the main thing,” and “We can do all the things, just not all at once” were among the incredible comments. Marcia said her mantra for the later miles of a marathon is “More than enough.” I love it.
So obviously from now on I’ll be doing everything perfectly and not second-guessing myself, right? Ha ha… we’ll see about that. I did have a good week, though. Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown. Here’s how it all played out.
Sunday
Leg day at the gym! I proceeded VERY cautiously after hurting my quad during squats the week before. I started with hex bar deadlifts…
Everything felt good, so I did some Bulgarian split squats and leg presses (no squats!) I eased into both of those very carefully, and didn’t go quite as heavy as I thought I could. Nothing hurt, and I considered it a success. But then…
Monday
I woke up with my quad hurting again- WHAT THE…??? Nothing hurt at the gym yesterday… did I injure it while I was sleeping? At any rate, I now know that I can run with a sore quad (just add it to the list of things that hurt but don’t affect my running) so I didn’t freak out.
4 mile run.
Tuesday
Upper body day at the gym! Good workout. Didn’t hurt myself in any way.
Wednesday
It was a “short” long run week, so I did 10 miles on the trail close to me. Since it was a continuous run with no “aid station” stops, I used my un-favorite double bottle hydration vest- but this time it didn’t bother me. Everything about this run felt great.
And I realized that I ran almost an entire minute per mile faster than when I run on the sandy trail. So there’s “trail slow” and there’s “sand slow.” And of course, “road slow.” Ha ha… I’m pretty sure my legs don’t know the meaning of the word “sprint” right now.
Thursday
3 mile run- everything felt good.
Friday
I had to decide what to do about lower body strength this week. Rather than risk hurting my quad AGAIN, I opted to do a Caroline Girvan Iron Series workout, Day #8, hamstrings and glutes. I was not looking forward to this, because I knew it would be a lot of hip thrusts… but I did it, and followed it up with some core work.
Saturday
Part of me wondered if I would wake up with my quad hurting, which would be baffling. But no… everything felt fine (my glutes were a little sore, though!)
I did a 4 mile run. I don’t usually run on Saturdays, and ended up with the rare opportunity to run with my husband! That was fun.
And later, an exciting night of basketball! Ahem.
The bad news is both Florida teams lost. Ugh, FAU! What a heartbreaking way to lose. At least UM eased us into it gradually. But looking on the bright side, I’ll get a better night’s sleep on Monday. That is going to be a late game, and now I don’t have to stay up for the whole thing. You have to take the good with the bad!
Sunday
Day off! Now I’m glad I did that Caroline Girvan workout on Friday, so I could sleep in and relax today. On Wednesday I have my last and longest long run before my race. Last night I had anxiety dreams about this run; in one of them, I was frantically rifling through the freezer looking for my Uncrustables, and it turned out my husband had thrown them away because he didn’t think they were healthy enough. I was really upset because I’m planning to try them out as fuel. Ha, luckily it was just a dream. I will have my Uncrustables on Wednesday!
How was your week? Did you watch the Final Four?
Do you ever run with your spouse?

Nope. My hubby doesn’t run. Sounds like run.
You are more than ready.
Can’t wait for your race.
Thank you Darlene! It’s less than three weeks away now- I also can’t wait, I wish it were next weekend so I could get it done!
Fun not run lol.
Glad you are feeling more positive. You’ve totally got this! I used to occasionally run with the Caveman but he’s like a sweat sprinkler and he’d often get ahead of me and I’d get pissed off, so our runs together stopped. He doesn’t run at all anymore. I was thinking it’d be an all FL final but then yikes. So disappointing.
Oh, it would have been so fun to have both FL teams in the final… oh well.
Luckily my husband and I run at around the same pace, although in a race I usually beat him (which I have to admit feels kind of good, ha ha.)
I am so glad you are feeling better about things. We can really get into our own heads sometimes! I also had fun running w my husband last week but not sure that will happen again anytime soon.
Yes, it was funny when I saw on your post today you ran with your husband this week too! I hope he’s still training for his Father’s Day 5k.
I’m glad you’re feeling better about things. Sounds like maybe you should ease up on your leg workout at the gym until after the race, especially since you’ve discovered you can do other leg workouts without residual pain. You’ve got this!
My husband and I ran many training miles and marathons together until his knee said no more running! Now we cycle together!
I was SO BUMMED that FAU lost in that last second. What a heartbreaker! After leading much of the game by as much as 10 points, my lady Hokies had a bad 4th quarter and lost. 🙁
Yes, it was such a terrible way to lose, so disappointing! I know your Hokies lost as well- I’m going to be watching this afternoon and rooting for Iowa (in honor of Kim.)
I’m definitely easing up on the leg workouts, which is hard for me. I have to remind myself that I can do it AFTER the race! Just not now.
I’m glad to see things are going well, your quad isn’t disturbing your running, you seem to have found and settle with a training regimen, and you seem to be in good form for the race. More than enough is a good phrase to use here. For now, lighter maintenance work on your legs in the gym is definitely enough! I agree that there’s so much training information out there that it’s overwhelming and at some point we just need to decide on something and stick to it.
I’ve done some running with my husband and it’s really enjoyable. But we’re not in sync since he can run more than I can. Now obviously it won’t happen for a while.
Thank you, Suzanne! You basically summed everything up right there.
I hope that eventually you can run with your husband again!
So glad to hear that things are going well and you’re a little better. You’re in a good place for race day! My husband used to run with me – but since kids, it’s just me that fits in the time. Though he did decide to run a half marathon last year without really any training (he did a few long runs leading up to it, but only one a week and just a few weeks), but we rarely run together anymore. Maybe someday we’ll both be back running together!
It is VERY hard for both spouses to run together when you have little kids- I remember those days.
LOL on your dream. My husband would never throw away my food — but he might eat my uncrustables!
Yay on your good 10 mile run — and great that your double barrel pack didn’t both you — did the shirt make a difference?
You will be well-prepared for your race!
I don’t know why the pack didn’t bother me this time- I wore the same shirt!
I’ll admit that I haven’t been paying close attention to the NCAA basketball tournament this year but I know there have been several surprises, especially in the first round!
S0 glad that you had a great 10 mile run!
Thank you Kim! And, there have been some exciting games in the tournament.
I have run with my husband before, but he is a lot faster than me and we both find it a very frustrating experience. Now we always exercise separately. I sometimes feel like we should have a sign-up sheet for the room where our weights and bench are because we sometimes both want to be in there at the same time and that room is not big enough for both of us!
I’m getting so excited for you for your big race. It’s so sooooooon!!
I’m getting excited too- but now I feel like time has slowed down to a crawl. I wish the 22nd were tomorrow and I could just run it!
It sounds like you’re in a good headspace for your upcoming race! I like it. I also like it when my glutes hurt after a strength session. It makes me feel powerful and ready to take on a tough run. I mean, that’s why we do this, right?
My hubs doesn’t run at all! I actually like running alone, so I guess it all works out.
I like running alone too- that’s one of the reasons why my husband and I don’t run together (in addition to being on different schedules.)
I love running with my husband! He’s definitely faster, so I always feel like I’m holding him back, but it’s still great and he’s so content to run slower to be with me. He has started back to outdoor runs, so I suppose it’s time for me to start running again. Sigh. I’ve actually really enjoyed NOT running this winter. I hated treadmill running last year and decided I can just be an April – November runner. But now I’m dreading getting started!
That is such a hilarious dream (I mean, mostly hilarious because it didn’t happen – it would have been enraging if that had actually happened). I’ve had some really weird dreams – bordering on nightmares – and it is SUCH a relief to wake up.
Yes, it is hard to get started again! Just do run/walk intervals and you’ll be fine. And yes, if my husband really did throw away my fuel I’d be furious.
Good to hear that you’re feeling better about things! I’m glad your 10 miler went well. And, how fun to run with your husband. I run off and on with my husband – currently on as he’s running my May race with me.
Ooh, that sounds fun- a race with your husband. Do you actually stay together in the race? My husband and I usually don’t.
Awww, look at you two running! How nice! I used to run with my husband, but haven’t done it in a long time. He has actually paced me an several marathons, including when we ran Boston together and my Boston qualifiers! But it’s a slower pace for him and it seemed to not work out so well for his hip. We are supposed to run Chicago together this year, so we’ll see how that goes! I’m glad your quad didn’t bother you after the gym. I would be nervous to be lifting like that when any niggles start happening. I’m so prone to injuries right now! Love to hear you had a great run (“everything about this run felt great”). I so hope to get back to saying things like that!! Great workouts this week!
Thanks Lisa! I know- it can be hard to run slower than your normal pace. But, I hope you and your husband run Chicago together- that would be so much fun.
Well a big YAY on the successful 10-miler! My Cherry Blossom 10-miler left me feeling really good as well. Todays championship game- not so much. 🙁 I’m h G lad you’re able to run without the quad being a factor.
I thought about you! While we were watching the game my husband kept saying “Both teams are so good!” And would say, “Well, it IS the championship game!” I enjoyed it even though Iowa lost.
A dream where you can’t get at your fuel?! Scary! I used to run with my husband a bit but he can go faster than me / I can go further than him so it didn’t ever work out that well. He got shin splints a few times and gave up, so now he just feeds me / holds my bag for races, etc.: a lot better. Glad you managed to avoid antagonising the quad with those last bits of lower body.
Yes, my husband wouldn’t even consider running a 50k! He’s run a couple marathons but I think he’s done with that- now the furthest he’ll go is a half.
I was bummed that both teams lost. But yes. Now I don’t have to watch any more basketball (I hate basketball lol). I’m proud of both teams though. They really did an amazing job.
What is going on with that quad? Ugh! That’s so frustrating!
Yes, both teams really did great- final four is amazing! And, someone has to lose (I just wish it weren’t FAU.)
LOL, neither you nor your husband look happy on that run! Glad that things seem to be working out & hurray for a great 10 miler.
That was a funny dream about the uncrustables (my husband would take them to eat himself, LOL!). And no, I don’t run with my husband. He has trouble walking more than a mile, sigh.
That’s funny because we did actually enjoy that run! Somehow it’s hard to get a good running picture. I’m lucky if I’m not scowling horriby.
