walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Sick and Tired

Oookay. Let me just start by saying that up until two weeks ago, I hadn’t been sick in a LONG time. Like, I went around saying reckless things like “I never get sick.” THEN, I got pink eye, accompanied by a cold (which I now think was probably Covid). I had laryngitis, a horrible headache, sore throat, nausea (probably from the post nasal drip), and some serious fatigue. These didn’t happen all at once, but rather trickled in, one after the other. There was always something or other that kept me feeling crappy for a second week. But, I wasn’t bedridden, so workouts did occur, such as they were. I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Rundown. Here we go…

Monday

Great news- my pink eye is gone and I can put in my contacts! PHEW! But now I have a pounding headache. I got out anyway for a 3 mile run.

The heat and humidity are making me angry.

Tuesday

I took my aching head to the gym for leg day! I did my usual focus on squats, and I also had a sad realization- the Bulgarian split squats are irritating my hamstring, so I have to avoid those for now.

Wednesday

It was my day off, so I opted to sleep in and run on the treadmill. The heat is making me extremely tired so I wanted to avoid it anyway. Even in the AC, this run was HARD. I ran slowly and took walking breaks, but it was 4 miles of huffing and puffing. Oof.

Thursday

Yesterday’s run left me so tired, I decided to get a little more sleep and take it fairly easy today. I did the Caroline Girvan dead bug workout, and my hip stability exercises. Sleeping in felt good.

Friday

Let’s try this again. 3 miles on the treadmill, and I felt a little better than Wednesday. I followed this with some core work, and side planks with leg lifts, which seemed harder than usual. Was it because I had just run, or am I getting weaker? Hrumph.

Saturday

Upper body workout at home. Shoulder press, lateral raises, rows, and my usual altercation with the pull up bar.

Sunday

Sore throat is gone… headache is gone… I have a little more energy. I’m feeling cautiously optimistic- so much so that I’m going to try a run outside.

I think I said the same thing LAST Sunday- I’m hoping next week is a better week!

How was your week? When was the last time you were sick?

Is it hot where you are?

  1. Man whatever you have sounds awful. If that is the new Covid I do not want to get it. I’m impressed with how much you worked out despite how bad you felt. Summer colds are the worst because it is just not the season for runny noses and coughs. I hate when I get colds in the summer. I hope this is your last summer bug and you feel great moving forward.

    1. Thank you Noemi! Yeah, you definitely don’t want to get whatever I had! Hopefully i’ll be immune to everything for a while after this.

  2. sorry to hear you’ve been sick and tired. it’s not fun and not having energy makes one feel weak right?
I have been feeling low grade fatigue for almost a month but finally feeling better. Be gentle with oneself does not come easy but I tried.

    1. I’m glad you’re feeling better, Coco! Yes, it’s really not fun not having energy. It does make me feel weak and I don’t like that!

  3. Maybe your illness is making you feel weak? I’m glad that you’re listening to your body and not pushing too hard. I’m seeing a ‘weird’ summer cold going around, which I suspect is that new Covid variant. I’m glad you are on the mend!

I can’t do Bulgarian split squats right now because of my knee, so I was given a variant: single leg squats to a box that had my knees at 90 degrees. My back leg was in a kickstand position. It was surprisingly effective–I felt those! Dare I say more than when I do Bulgarians, because i wasn’t so concerned about my balance. i did these unweighted, but you could certainly hold dumbbells.

    1. Hmm! I’ll try it! Thanks. And… this was definitely not a normal cold. It had a weird variation to it, which is one of the things that makes me think it was Covid.

  4. Knock on wood. I can’t remember being sick. But my hubby is now.

You are so active even when you are sick. I would do nothing.

Hope you are on the mend.

    1. If I do nothing, I feel even WORSE. Yes, you also seem like someone who doesn’t get sick. Stay away from your husband! I hope he feels better soon.

  5. Been there. I know the feeling of getting a few sniffles and then not being able to catch a break and getting illness after illness that pretty much sidelines you from normal life for a while.

With that said, I’ve been riding a wave of good luck. The last time I remember being sick was last fall. My husband on the other hand, just went through The Cold From Hell that lasted for weeks and he’s still feeling a little off for workouts. But I’m not sitting back and feeling smug because I know that my time will come.

    1. No- do not feel smug! Smugness will come back to bite you. But it does sound like you avoided whatever your husband has, so that’s good!

  6. Talking about getting sick or not is one of those things I’m going to just avoid saying out loud so as to not tempt the fates. lol! But I am so glad you seem to be on the upward swing finally! You’re going to have a great week this week, I know it!!

    1. Thank you Kae! That’s what I’m thinking too. Nothing special has to happen, but if I feel like my old self, the whole week will be amazing.

  7. I hope you’re really over this sickness now — sounds horrible.

I agree with Wendy, I bet your feeling weak was related to being ill.

I don’t want to jinx myself by thinking back to the last time I was really sick—maybe the last time I had Covid a few winters ago?

Foreshadowing the post I’m working on for runfessions — is the A/C at your gym strong enough to make it comfortable to run? Or maybe you’re the wrong person to ask since you’re acclimated to Florida running!

    1. Oh, the AC at our gym is top notch! As a matter of fact, if I’m not running I feel a little cold in there- which is as it should be.

  8. I hope you’re well and truly over your sickness now Jenny. Impressed at how much you worked out despite feeling crappy for so much of the week. Two weeks is a long time not to feel normal… I wish a better week for you.

    1. Thank you Maya! Yes, two weeks is a long time… I’m starting to forget what “normal” feels like. Hopefully I’ll find out soon.

  9. Oof that was a nasty bug! Yikes! I get sick fairly often since I am around young, germy kids and have a suppressed immune system. I had a few bugs that leveled me this spring but I tested negative for flu and Covid so I don’t know what I had. Will had a nasty, productive cough right now but is otherwise fine. He gets the worst coughs.

It is very very hot here. We set a record high of 96 yesterday and a record low of 80. And it was very humid. I ran 5.5 miles yesterday morning and thought of you! I felt slow and my body was working way harder than usual but I got it done! Now we have more rain headed our way and that’s the forecast for Chicago, too. Will and I will be there Wed-Sat. I am hoping it’s just scattered showers.

    1. Well- rain might cool things down. I know Chicago is super hot right now too.
Yes, it sounds like you had Florida weather for your run! I ran outside today and felt a little better- but you’re still running farther than me right now.

  10. You have had a rough few weeks. Sometimes we just have to give ourselves more rest than we would like to heal and recover. Hope you are over the worst of it and feeling back to yourself this week. The extreme heat does not help at all! Thus, why summer is my 4th favorite 🙂

    1. Deborah, I am right there with you (although summer was NOT my 4th favorite when I lived up north. Times have changed.) And yes- I don’t want to rest, but sometimes our bodies just need it.

  11. I hope you’re feeling even better, and today’s run is a success! I typically don’t seem to ever get sick either. I did have a 2-3 day weird cold (of sorts?) last summer, but it may have been allergies since it was in August. I don’t usually have allergy issues anymore (five years of allergy shots several years ago), but once in awhile I do have very mild symptoms during peak times.

    1. I don’t have allergies- but I’m almost afraid to say that. There’s a first time for everything!

  12. I’m impressed by how much you were able to keep up your workout routine, even if it was modified, while you were sick! Hopefully that is behind you now and you’ll feel better this week.

It IS hot where I am, but such is life in Arizona from May – October! It got up to 117 on Thursday and has been gradually going down since then, and today the high is “only” in the upper 90s which feels amazing compared to what we’ve been having lately. Maybe I’ll have to wear a sweater for these “chilly” temps hahaha!

    1. Omg 117. We do NOT see those temps here, but I remember that kind of heat from being in Texas. I’ll be back in Texas in a few weeks… can’t wait. Sigh.

  13. Hoping you are resting up right now from a Sunday run! I hope you are feeling better. Sounds like a rough week or two for you 🙁 It’s been a sweaty week here in Ohio and the temps are just getting higher. I might might stick with my treadmill this upcoming week! Bike riding has been pretty good though, although still a bit toasty for that too.
Fingers crossed you have a better week!

    1. Thank you Lisa! I’m very optimistic now- I think I’m past the worst of it, and starting to feel a little more like my normal self.

  14. Oh my gosh Jenny- I’ve had a long, drawn out sickness too the last couple of weeks, after not being sick for months! Not bad enough to be properly bedridden but enough to affect energy and enjoyment of life. Boo! Glad you’re improving and I am too. Good on you for continuing to work out during this time. I’ve got to get back into things this week.

    1. It sounds similar to my situation! Ugh!!! Well- sounds like we’re both getting better. I had to keep reminding myself, these things don’t last forever!

  15. Hope you start feeling better this week – sounds like you’re headed in that direction. It’s supposed to be very hot this week in Virginia, but what do I care, I’m in southern Utah where it will be really hot, but with low humidity.

    1. UTAH!!! I’ll bet it’s so, so beautiful! I want to hear all about it, with photos! And yes- at least it won’t be humid. Have fun!

  16. Oh gosh. When I saw the title of this post I was going to ask if you thought it was Covid.

I do hope you’re feeling better. The last time I got sick was over almost two years ago. I will get allergies and migraines that knock me on my butt, but not really any viruses or infections, for which I am incredibly grateful.

    Your kitty is so cute.

And it’s hot. Stupid hot. It just drains my will to do anything.

  17. Ugh. This sounds awful, Jenny.

I do feel like people who don’t get sick very often (my husband!) get UBER sick when it strikes. He misses most of the colds/flu bugs, but when he gets something he is completely and utterly down for the count.

I get sick periodically, but not usually very badly. The worst in recent memory was almost exactly 2 years ago when I had a truly horrific stomach bug where I couldn’t stop throwing up for days. Of course my husband was away, and he actually had to call in “backup” from a friend.

  18. It stinks so much when your health isn’t at its best! I really hope that you woke up this morning feeling much better and the weak ahead is a great one.

  19. 117?! HA, I can’t even imagine what that feels like. It was in the 90s this weekend and “feels like” was above 100 but ouch. I’m sorry about your past few weeks – hope your Sunday run went well and you’re feelin better!

  20. I had my first cold in a while in May, which is not the worst except I get THE WORST cough every time. I was better for a couple of weeks and then the wildfire smoke set off the cough again and then I got a UTI and now I am sick with a fever – we gathered often while we were away so possibly Covid. I am OVER IT. Also, lifting weights with a headache? I think I would die. I have been mostly bedridden but got some yoga in.
