walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Thanksgiving Recovery Week

Hello!  Thanks for stopping by for the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah.  It was kind of a weird week- I didn’t exactly feel ill, but I also didn’t feel well.  I’m pretty sure it was “Thanksgiving-itis”- I needed time to recover from that holiday.  But, there were plenty of workouts, as always.  Here’s how it all went down….

Sunday

Trail run- 20 miles the hard way.  I didn’t sleep well Saturday night; my stomach was not happy, and I was up multiple times to use the bathroom (TMI?  Sorry…) I considered postponing this run, but then I thought, what if this happens the night before my race?  I’m not going to DNS the race, so I might as well do this run.

It actually wasn’t that bad… for the first 17 miles.  I got started just as the sun was rising (see top photo- I love my trail!) but by the end, the “feels like” temperature was 88 degrees, and I felt it.  But I got it done!

Monday

I did my usual post-long run walk one mile, run 3 miles.  In the past I always took a day off after my long runs, but I’m trying to get my legs used to running the next day.  I have big back-to-back long runs coming up (more on that later.)

Tuesday

Strength at home.  Runner’s Touch, work on the pull up bar, overhead press with dumbbells, dead bugs and plank.  I know I’m always blathering on about Runner’s Touch, but I love that exercise so much.  It involves strength and balance, and I do it without shoes on so it works the muscles in my feet and ankles, as well as glutes and hamstrings.

Wednesday

WOOHOO!  Our “Florida cold” front came through, and it was 54 degrees for this 4 mile run, which felt amazing.

It felt weird to have long sleeves on though- my elbows were sweaty.

Thursday

Still in the 50s!  3 mile run followed by planks, dead bugs, and more Runner’s Touch.

Back to my normal tank top.

Friday

Gym day!  When I got there, someone was using MY SLED.  This has never happened before- I figure people use it in my absence because sometimes it’s loaded with different weights (and even that baffles and disconcerts me a little.) Not only was it being used, but it was being used by a GROUP, and they were all taking turns.  What?

I started off with squats and deadlifts, and then finally my sled was free.  But the group had it loaded with an extra 45 pound plate.  I usually have two 45 pound plates on, and they had three.  I thought, “If they can do it, I can do it!  After all, I am a SLED EXPERT.”  Well… it was way harder, but I could do it, and it felt exhilarating to have an extra challenge.  Just goes to show- sometimes it really pays off to push yourself (or, have others push you.)

I finished up with leg curls, leg extensions (still working on that knee) and abs.  Great workout!

Saturday

5 mile run before work.  Ahem.  My legs were very sore.  And, our heat is back- but that’s normal.  It never stays cold down here for long.

At night I watched FSU win!  Baylor’s season was disappointing (to say the least) but luckily we have FSU to console us.

Sunday

OFF!!!  Sleeping late, waffles, Dolphins game, and the first round of my holiday baking extravaganza.

I sat down with my calendar to figure out my long run schedule.  I’m leading up to back-to-back long runs on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (rare consecutive days off work for me- I also have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off, but strangely I don’t want to do back-to-backs on those days.). ANYWAY, it works out perfectly for me to alternate Sundays and Wednesdays until then- in other words, about ten days between each long run.  So next long run will be Wednesday!  Let’s all beg the running gods for cool weather.

How was your week?  Did you need to recover from Thanksgiving?

Was your weather seasonal this week? – Ours was about normal for this time of year.  December could be 55 or 85- you never know.

  1. Well you know how our week was… NOT good. But Taco was well enough to go back to school on Friday! I did a CG lower body workout yesterday morning and OMG I was sore. It was hard to walk up the stairs! My legs were dead. I am hoping to get another CG workout in today. I decided I am going to focus on those workouts and let running take a back seat for awhile. It’s been nicer here lately but it’s still chilly and I don’t love running in the cold.

Oh and Paul started to run a fever in the late afternoon and is now sick – I’m guessing with the virus Taco had? Hopefully it’s more short lived because I fly out to Chicago on Tuesday for my last trip of the year.

    1. Oh NO. Poor Paul ( and poor you.) I hope he gets over it quickly.
Oh yes, those CG workouts will wreck you! If you focus on those, you’ll be in good shape. And then you’ll be able to pick running back up when you’re ready.

  2. It took me a few days to recover from Thanksgiving as well! Way to push through your long run. You are right, you never know how you will feel on race day so good practice. Those runs in the 50’s are a gift for you all down there! Don’t they feel good?!

  3. Back to back long runs are so fun! I am actually not joking, as I really love the feeling of being totally depleted but still strong, if that makes sense. I am not as big of a fan of running the days/week after a race, although I know that is good too, to get a shake out run in. However, since I ran a race the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I took the following week off, except for a couple of walks/hikes, and it was good. I am feeling back to being strong a week later and am ready to get outside!

  4. Yay for cooler weather – too bad it didn’t fall on your long run day. Tuesday was really cold and blustery here and I had to move my outdoor bike ride to Thursday.

Well done on pulling/pushing the extra weight on the sled, but please be careful with adding too much weight too quickly. That could be a recipe for injury.

    1. I think adding extra weight on the sled is a little safer than, say, if I suddenly increased my squat weight by 50%- that really would be a recipe for disaster. I think it shows I really wasn’t challenging myself enough on the sled to begin with.

  5. As you may have seen, I did a couple runs this week! 3 miles total each, with walk breaks. Haha! I can’t imagine running 20 miles right now, or back to back long runs, etc. It’s weird, because though I was never a hard core runner like you are, but I DID run a marathon once… so at one point in my life I was able to run 26.2 miles without stopping! (I did not walk during my marathon.) That blows my mind. I guess it shows what the body can do with time and proper training! Right now even 1-2 miles without stopping feels very hard! It snowed here today, so this reminds me also partly why I got out of running. It’s complicated in a cold weather state! Some real bad asses get out there in the snow, but I am not a fan of potentially slipping and falling and breaking my face!

    1. Yay for your solid 20 miler! That’s fantastic!

I like to do that runner’s touch exercise too, usually as part of my pre-run warm-up.

We had a blast of cold mid-week—don’t into the 20s!—but we’re back in the mid-50s.

    2. Yes- it really is amazing how your body adapts to training. 3 miles feels hard right now, but if you trained (I’m not saying you want to, but IF) you could run a marathon. Our bodies are incredible.
I grew up in the midwest so I did a lot of snowy, cold runs! Of course I was younger then- now I would probably be a lot more cautious. Slipping on the ice and breaking a bone does not sound appealing.

    3. Okay I just replied to your comment under Coco’s comment… I’m really mixing things up in this comment section this morning!

  6. My thanksgiving was low key. And our weather was great until today. But it’s a rest day. Hooray.

My friend whom I’m visiting next weekend strained her ankle during a Florida Ragnar. Boo.

    1. Oh no- was she supposed to run the 15k with you? I feel bad for her but I hope it doesn’t ruin your trip at all!

  7. We had a cold blast, but then it got warmer—and foggy this weekend!

Yay on your solid 20 miler. That’s awesome. I do that runner’s touch exercise too, usually as part of my pre-run warm-up.

    Happy baking next weekend!

  8. I’m sure your cool mornings felt great! There’s plenty of cold weather here! But it’s not even as cold as it normally is. Nice work on the 20 miler!

  9. Although that long run was tough, you were smart to take it on despite the rough night of sleep. You’re so right, we never know what Race Day will bring us, so this was a great trial run of a potentially bad scenario.

  10. Look what you started! You made using the sled cool so everyone wants to do it now.

It got really cold here finally. I’m not saying that I wanted it, but at least it’s something to not have the first cold snap until the last week in November. It’s mild again this weekend.

  11. Our weather has been all over the place lately (pouring rain at the moment, thankfully not 2 ft of snow like 4 years ago) — glad that you got at least some breaks from the heat. Except your long run. What’s up with that?

I’ll bet your legs were sore after that workout!

I feel pretty much back to normal now, and I never really felt sick either — just suddenly really wiped out. So weird. Glad to be feeling better til the next time.

  12. Ooh a day off with waffles AND holiday baking? count me in! I love holiday baking and can’t wait to get fully into the holiday spirit soon. I’m out of town this week but hoping to get fully into baking/holiday mode when I return. Nice job with your runs this week! Love that it could be 55 or 85 lol. In CLE it could be 10 or 50 in Nov. so I’m just glad when it’s more than 30.

  13. that’s a lot of running. I had a great run this weekend, probably since Chicago. hitting double digit for the first time felt good.
I’m intrigued by your runner’s touch routine. how long does it take you to perform the routine? I need some quick strength an mobility on days that I need to rush to the office.

  14. Ugh, those long runs. You really have to schedule them and then what if it doesn’t work with your (life) schedule? Sigh. But I am sure you figure it out – as always 🙂 It’s nice you got some relief from the heat this week. Mid 50s is nice running weather. The CIM came through my neighborhood today and they had such luck with weather this year. I remember, last year it was so cold, today was in the mid 50s

  15. Great job on another strong 20 miler! Crazy that you still have feels like temps near 90 in December, but actually we’re almost gonna hit 80 here this week so the weather is all over the place.

I’m still in my “off season” until January. I’m running but not pressuring myself to hit a certain mileage. I did an 11 mile run this weekend which felt long enough for now, and still somehow got almost 41 miles for the week! I am doing a challenge between now and Christmas called Merry Vertmas where I’m trying to get as much elevation gain as possible so it’s fun to focus more on climbing than getting in more miles. Last year I reached Everest in the challenge (29,000 feet) and I’m not sure I’ll hit that this year but I’ll try!

  16. People on your sled!! How dare they?!

I have been struggling to find energy to workout, but I’m pushing myself to do at least some low-key yoga or low-impact cardio. Maybe soon I’ll feel like more weight lifting? The everlasting darkness is clearly getting to me.

  17. Go Jenny.

And I agree with NGS. People using your sled? I think they should be banned from the gym henceforth forthwith – haha.

It SNOWED where I live today. Like… alot. There is a snow day at school and it actually deserves the cancellation. That said, now that I don’t have my old (quasi-stressful job) to contend with, I’m settling in to just…hang out with the kids. I have always been in essence a SAHM, and today I really feel like I can sink into that role a bit more than normal. Plus, the snow is gorgeous and my husband is home so HE can shovel.

Yay for some cool weather. And all the gold stars for that long run.

  18. I love putting my training plan into my calendar! I’ve to nothing right now though 🙁 Training won’t start until January for my half. 54 degrees is a wonderful temperature. It is different to see you in long sleeves for sure! Way to crush that *heavier* sled!
