walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- That Was Weird…

What a week!  We thought we were getting a hurricane, and ended up with tornadoes.  Because the hurricane itself didn’t hit us that badly, most people in our area had little to no damage- except for those in the path of the tornadoes, where there was utter destruction.  Luckily we were in the first category, but everyone is left with the feeling, “What just happened?”  But of course… there were still workouts.  Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting.  Here we go…

Monday

It was a rainy day.  In the morning I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, and saved my run for later in the day.  I thought I might go to the gym and run on the treadmill, but there was no thunder or lightning, so I ran 3 miles outside.

Tuesday

I started the day with this 30 Minute Pilates Core Workout..  OUCH.  It was hard!  Followed it up with hip stability exercises, and that was it for the morning.  Later in the day we got news that schools would be closed Wednesday-Thursday because of Milton.

Wednesday

Hmmm!  I had a 10 mile run planned.  But there’s a hurricane coming.  Should I run on the treadmill?  Milton is still out in the Gulf of Mexico and isn’t due to make landfall on the west coast of Florida till night.  The weather seemed fine, so I decided to run outside.  Instead of going to my nearby trail (which is on the edge of the Everglades) I decided to stick to streets closer to home.  I was thinking it would be safer, in case of lightning.

Once again, I was a little dismayed how hard 10 miles felt.  I thought about cutting it short, but instead did my trick of running 30 seconds/walking 30 seconds until I felt better, and ended up doing the whole distance.

Hmmm, the wind is picking up (FORESHADOWING…)

I went inside, took a shower and when I got out we had a tornado warning.  WHAT?   We turned on the TV and saw that a tornado was passing just to the west of us (you know, like where my Everglades trail is!) It was moving north, so didn’t affect us directly.  But several tornadoes went through our county and wreaked havoc, as tornadoes do.

Lesson learned- take the weather seriously.  The outer bands of Milton spawned around 20 tornadoes throughout the state that day.

Thursday

Milton moved through overnight, causing some gusty winds but not much else.  We awoke to a beautiful, breezy Thursday!  Since we all thought the weather was going to be terrible, work was canceled for the day and I slept in.  But later in the day I decided to go for a run.  I had new shoes!

The Altra Experience Flow- confusingly, these are the old FWD Experience. The new name is definitely better.

I just ran 2 miles, then did a MadFit standing core workout.  Then we got word that schools would be closed AGAIN on Friday.  So many people in our county lost power in the tornadoes, and they were still going through every school to make sure there was no damage.

Friday

Okay, I’m so confused.  What day is it, anyway?  My daughter was home, but I had work (side note- it’s SUCH A RELIEF when your kids are old enough to stay home alone.  When they’re little, these school closures are brutal.). I went to the gym for leg day!

Squats, deadlifts, abs- the usual.

Saturday

4 mile run before work.  I don’t know what’s up with this hazy photo.  It was a beautiful day!  Milton blew in some cooler, dryer air.  Not actually cool or dry- but coolER and dryER.  The end is in sight.

Sunday

On tap- sleeping in and watching the Chicago Marathon!  Then in the afternoon I’m hoping to put up my outdoor Halloween decorations.  I’m cautiously optimistic that we will have no more storms, so it’s time for outdoor decs!

These storms are always scary.  Luckily everyone in our Florida blogging community made it through unscathed.  Our real life friends are all fine, although my daughter’s band director had a tornado go through his neighborhood!  He had damage to his house, but it’s still standing and, most important, he and his family are all fine.  PHEW.

Did you have a “normal” week?- I’m trying to remember what that feels like.

Are you getting fall weather?

For years, I’ve been adamant about NOT starting Christmas festivities until after Thanksgiving.  However, lately I’ve been re-thinking that.  Today

  1. I am so glad you are safe.
We had to cut our vacation short to fly home to prepare. There is so awful flooding south of us and plenty of people lost power but we came through unscathed this time. So stressful.

Kids are out of school Wednesday through Monday and our band comp was cancelled in Orlando.

Look at you, getting in those 10 miles! Amazing!

    1. Thanks Jenn! Yeah, we had a lot of school activities canceled, and the kids are off until Tuesday. Ugh! Glad you’re okay. Let’s hope this is the last one (for this season!)

  2. I’m happy to hear that you and your family are safe. Congrats on getting those running miles and gym visits in despite the weather, and good job on heeding the weather forecasts and keeping your runs closer to home.

    1. Well, it was just a lot of luck that I missed those tornadoes- no one forecasted that. But yes, the important thing is, we’re all safe!

  3. I’m so glad Milton — and its tornadoes — spared you.

I did not have a normal week, but I had nice weather everywhere I went.

    10 miles IS hard!

  4. It’s weird to say, but yes this past week was normal. Back in August we had a really bad storm that caused a lot of flooding. Our neighborhood is uphill, so there was no damage but there were a few sections of our town where there was a lot of damage from flooding. No one has flood insurance up here, since it’s not something that’s expected to happen. It was something that was isolated to our area while the rest of the world was “normal”. Normal is good!

When life hands you lemons make lemonade – do you like running in the rain? I always loved it.

The thing with weather is that there are so many false alarms that if we took every alert seriously we’d miss out on a lot of stuff. That’s why when stuff gets real it catches a lot of people off guard.

    1. True- sometimes you have to take a chance with the weather. And no one was predicting tornadoes (at least at that point.) Sometimes it’s just completely random.
I DO like running in the rain! Especially in Florida, where the alternative is sweltering heat. I’ll take the rain any day.

  5. Isn’t it crazy how one area is totally fine and then utter destruction so close by? glad to hear that you are all safe. Florida really had a rough few weeks! Nice work on the 1o miler! Have fun decorating today

  6. I’m so glad you are safe and I hope no further storms impact Florida! I am glad the other bloggers are ok, too!

I am glad you were able to get your 10 mile run in. That is a LONG run and it’s crazy how fast we lose that kind of endurance!

I guess it was a normal week although we had so many doctor appointments plus a hair appointment for me so that kind of threw things off. Now I won’t have a normal week where I am not traveling until election week! This week Paul and I go to DC to visit my sister which I am so excited about! I started to get a sore throat yesterday so just hope I can fight off whatever I may be coming down with! But I napped for 2 hours yesterday and got to sleep in until 7 today so all this extra rest should help.

    1. Oh, I hope you get over this quickly and feel good for your trip- that sounds really fun, traveling with Paul. When you said you’re traveling every week till election week I got a jolt of anxiety- it’s coming up SOON. Gulp. I’m scared, I’m excited, I just want it to be over.

  7. I’m so glad you and your family are ok (and as is your house)! Tornadoes are so terrifying, much less on top of the stress of a hurricane.

I love the color of your new shoes! I’ve never worn Altras. Congrats on keeping moving with so many moving parts this week!

    1. Thank you Lindsay! And I also like the color of the shoes- in the past I always ended up with white in that shoe. I was glad they had a nice color for once.

  8. I love the bright new shoes and the 10-miler for you, Jenny. Look at you showing Milton who’s the boss.

We’re having cooler temps and nice fall weather (not cold yet!) and I made banana-pumpkin bread and pumpkin soup yesterday. Hmm, I wonder if I was inspired by anyone? 😉

You are so right about school closures when you have older kids… School closures felt more like a treat and less like a last-minute scramble once my older one was old enough to be in charge of the little sibs.

  9. I’m glad you were safe & spared any destruction, but what a crazy couple of weeks! As you know, my week was far from normal with all my painting, but it was worth it. Nice job on that 10-miler!

  10. What a week for you! Again, I’m so glad you were safe. But how scary about your Everglades trail and the tornado. Weather warnings should always be taken seriously!
Your new shoes look great! How are you doing with zero drop now? Or are these low drop? And – I’ve been trying to follow your blog during my time away but I’m still not sure – is your calf back to normal now?

    1. My calf seems to be all better! And these shoes are low drop. I want to try zero drop again at some point, but coming off a calf injury doesn’t seem like the right time.

  11. I did have a normal week, but there was that whole northern lights thing when everyone in my town got to see gorgeous sights and Hannah and I saw nothing (whomp whomp). Fortunately the hurricane/tornado situation didn’t impact our weather. It is getting chilly and I might have to put my sandals away for the season soon. I had to break out my heated vest this afternoon!

    1. Yes, I saw that on Elisabeth’s blog! It looks gorgeous. I know it’s not funny, but I’m laughing a little bit about everyone seeing them except for you and Hannah. Oh well- you don’t need northern lights anyway!

  12. What a crazy time to be in Florida. I’m so glad you emerged unscathed and look at all those runs you fit in!
Here’s hoping this week feels far more mundane and I’m wishing you clear skies and cool temperatures!

  13. What a wild weather week for you! I’m glad you and your family and home are safe, but having the tornadoes come so close to your usual trails must have been kinda scary.

We are still 10+ degrees above average here with temps still in the low 100s but I’m hoping the forecast will hold because it’s supposed to be in the 70s with a chance for rain this coming weekend. I’m ready for fall vibes!

  14. What a crazy week for you! We didn’t see much coverage of the storm while in Europe so I’m happy to hear you are doing well! I didn’t realize the schools had closed for so many days. Yikes on the tornado going past the band director’s house!! I hope your upcoming week has no weather issues 🙂

  15. Jenny, that near-miss with the tornado sounds too close for comfort! I’m glad you got done with your run before it hit! And so relieved that you and your loved ones made it through the hurricanes okay.

  16. Wow, I am so glad you are alright. These storms are so scary – and a tornado amidst it all?! Thank goodness you got in your run and were home in time. Hopefully you are DONE with these storms!

  17. What is normal? I forgot.

I bought those shoes in purple. Not sure I like them. They seem heavier and stiffer than the previous version.

I just thought how hard 13 was. How can I do twice that????
