Welcome to the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) This week was a good one, and I’m loving all the daylight in the mornings (what’s that you say? Daylight Saving Time? DANG IT.) Here’s how it all went down…
Sunday
This day started off lazily (I slept till 9 am!!!) but in the afternoon I did a lower body strength workout. Hip stability exercises, squats, and RDLs. I said I wasn’t going to do squats and RDLs on the same day, but I wasn’t using my heaviest weights on these so I figured it was okay.
Monday
4 mile run! No school today, so I was able to sleep in a little and run entirely in the daylight, woohoo!
Tuesday
In the morning I did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout; after work I did an upper body workout at the gym.

Wednesday
17 mile trail run!!!
This run got hard in the last few miles. It was hot, and I didn’t fuel enough. But- live and learn! I finished the miles I set out to do.
Thursday
Very slow and easy 3 mile run. My quads were a little sore, but I was happy that overall I felt pretty good.

I followed this run with a little bit of core- crunches and planks. I kind of forgot about planks- I haven’t done them in a long time.
Friday
I cued up Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout again, and then got out the pull up bar. I fully accept the fact that I’ll never be able to do an unassisted pull up- I’ve tried and failed at this too many times. BUT, my daughter has been working with the pull up bar, and she’s inspired me. I’m working on negatives and assisted pull ups with a band.
Saturday
5 mile run! It was 60 degrees and this run felt great.
After work I had planned to go to the gym with my daughter, but she has a cold and is prioritizing rest (she has a very busy week ahead.) Instead I did a lower body strength workout at home, with squats and hip stability exercises.
Sunday
OFF! Sleeping in as late as possible… waffles… college basketball… reading.
No complaints this week! My low back has been feeling good. My hamstring nagged at me a little, but my long run felt good and I recovered well from it. I’m feeling optimistic that I’ll be able to do my 50 mile race at the end of April IF NOTHING ELSE GOES WRONG. We’ll see what happens!
How was your week?
Can you do an unassisted pull up?

I came close once but … nope! Annabel can do several though! Super impressive to me!
Really? Annabel can do several pull ups??? That is impressive!
I’m sure I can’t do a pull up. lol.
Great news on the 17 mile run.
You are going to rock that 5 miler.
Thanks Darlene- I have quite a bit to go before I make it to the start line, but I’m hopeful!
Lol I can’t do an assisted pull up let alone an unassisted one. I continue to do pull up bar hangs every once in a while. Even if I never do a pull up there is no harm in improving my grip strength and I can tell that it’s good for my posture.
If you’re dropping 17 miles after all of the setbacks that you’ve had then 50 miles will be yours for the taking at the end of April!
Well, thanks for the vote of confidence! And- even if I never do a real pull up, I’m still stronger when I’m working with the pull up bar (doing negatives, etc.) So it’s a good thing.
OK, I’m knocing on wood for you on that last point!
I think a 17 mile run is supposed to be hard at the end — great that you were able to get it done!
True- 17 miles probably never really feels “easy!”
I can’t do an unassisted pull up and can’t imagine that I ever will! I’ve never been able to do one. I just don’t have the upper body strength it requires. I’m glad you had a great week of workouts with no random pains or issues!
We started off rough with Will getting a stomach bug, but I added on a high note with Paul’s birthday. He had an absolutely wonderful day and we had an awesome day together on Friday at the mall of America! We also went for a run this week. It was hard! And it was really awkward with my hand in the splint so I think I’m going to wait until I’m out of the splint to run again, but it was nice to get out there for one short run.
I can’t wait to hear all about Paul’s birthday and your day at the mall! I’ll bet it was really fun.
You have a few more weeks and you’re out of the splint, right? Just in time for spring- you’ll be able to get out and run in nicer weather.
What a great week! I have never done an unassisted pull-up. When I did a CrossFit-like boot camp for 10 years, I was terrified of any pull-up! But, it was such a confidence boost as I got stronger and moved to different bands.
There are lots of pull ups in Cross Fit, right? You probably did get pretty strong. Even doing them assisted with a band requires a lot of strength.
Glad to see you are feeling strong going into your last month of training for your race. Fingers crossed for you. There was a small window of time about 15 years ago where I could do pull ups and I did feel like a rockstar. Ah memories
Deborah, I wonder if you could do them now? Sometimes things like that don’t go away. You should try sometime! AND- I have almost TWO months till my race, not one. Don’t scare me.
Did I know you had a 50 mile race? I don’t think I knew that! HOW DID I MISS THIS, JENNY!!! I’m sure you’ll do great, although I just fainted a little at the thought of 50 miles. Pack your rain jacket just in case! Why do I feel so out of it, I feel like I missed everything in just a week!
Ugh, why must we change time. I feel like I just adjusted from the three hour time difference in Cancun, now we have to shift time next weekend. WHY WHY WHY.
I know Nicole- does anyone REALLY want to move the clocks ahead???
I definitely mentioned the race at some point, but I haven’t been talking about it a lot. It’s at the end of April.
I can’t wait to hear about your vacation!
17 miles is great, and you still have lots of time before your race to continue building! And it’s good that all your other runs and workouts went well too! I just decided this week that I want to go to the Grand Canyon over a 3-day weekend I have in mid-April, so now I’m basically training for that, so I had a 14 mile long run with 2400 feet of elevation gain this weekend to start preparing. It’s only going to be a 15-20 mile route but will have a lot of elevation gain but I love those kinds of trails so I’m excited to be training for something again, even if it’s just a solo runventure.
I don’t think I’ve ever attempted a pull-up, but now I’m curious about trying an assisted one. But my upper body is pretty weak so I really have my doubts, but maybe something to work towards!
I’m so happy to read that you felt good all week long, Jenny! Yes, yes, yes!!
I had a busy week, but got a lot of walks in as well… and yes, I can do an unassisted pullup.
Bonus: I did a workout called “How to Strike a Nazi” lol. They better not mess with me.
I tried for a while years ago to do pull-ups and never could. But once I join my new gym I’m looking forward to hanging off the bars and strettttccccchhhhhing! Well done on the 17, I think you’ll get there just fine!
How great that your lower back hasn’t been bothering you recently! And it seems like a good thing that your hammie mostly behaved and felt good after your long run.
Nope, I can no longer do an unassisted pull-up. I used to work on that as a priority, but haven’t done them in years. I do have an assist band that I should get back out and use some.
Glad you see to be feeling better@! Congrats on the 17-miler. And not feeling too sore after — that’s a good sign! Fingers crossed that next month’s race will happen!
As you know, I, too, struggle with an unassisted pull-up. I keep saying I’ll never get one, yet here I go, trying again. It’s the lats that we have to strengthen. I do negatives, I do assisted, yep, I do it all. When will it happen? lol
Nice job getting that 17 miler done! And yay for feeling good!
Wow, well done with that long run. And I’m so glad that your body is feeling good! I haven’t yet tried a pull-up. I tried a deadhang on Friday and failed, as in only being able to hand 2-3 seconds. But that was a few hours after my exhausting gym session. I should try again when I’m fresh and my muscles are happy and energetic.
Nice job on those 17 miles! Pull-ups? I attempted doing those back in November (their was a pull-up challenge following a trail race, in hopes of knocking time off of ones finish time). Ugh, I think I did one, maybe two, and both were ugly! Honestly, I’m a-okay with that. I can do many, many other fitness things that others may shun …like 100 stair flights, some with weights (just for one example, LOL).
I got to run three times outside last week. Woot woot! Felt great. A 5 mile run in 60 degree weather sounds just right. I do not think I can do an unassisted pullup. I haven’t tried, but I have no interest in embarrassing myself. I’m still in awe of the 50 mile run. Yikes that makes me shudder.
Amazing week! It’s so awesome to see you running these longer distances!
I hope your daughter is feeling better.
And no. I cannot do an unassisted pull-up. it’s just not happening.
I am confident that you will be ready for that 50 miler too! I hope your daughter is feeling well this week. My daughter was sick last weekend. Glad she was close by at college so I could bring her some OTC meds to help her out! It’s nice to be needed still 🙂
