Christmas Fun

Hello, and welcome to Day TWENTY NINE of NaBloPoMo!  Whoa… we’re almost done.  Last week was a super fun and busy week.  I love the transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and we started to transform the house on Friday.  All the fall decorations are put away and Christmas is up!

You know those posts where someone gives you a “home tour” of all their Christmas decorations, and it’s really elegant and color coordinated?  Well, this is not one of those posts.  I’m severely challenged when it comes to decorating, and our Christmas style could be characterized as “haphazardly fun.”  Here’s our tree:

Funny that the uneven tinsel didn’t bother me until I saw it in the picture! I fixed it later.

Under the tree is the official “first present of Christmas,” – by the time this is published, that present will be at the post office, being whisked to my Secret Santa recipient.  How exciting!

The cats have their own tree because… well.  Not sure if there’s any reason I could give that would actually make sense.  But here it is:

If you look closely, you can see they have their Trader Joe’s advent calendar- we’ll start it on Wednesday!

For the picture, Charlotte and Muffin’s stockings were laid by the tree… but actually right now they’re hung near the rest of the stockings.

Now, in case you’re starting to think, “This woman is crazy!  Why all the fuss about her cats?” I’ll show you the bathroom:

Oh wait. This probably does not make me look more sane.

The living room shelves hold a holiday mishmosh of Lego gingerbread houses, photos of the kids with Santa, nutcrackers, and here’s the oldest thing I own:

My mom put up this little wax Nativity scene as far back as I can remember- so I would guess it’s from the 1960s.  Unfortunately Joseph melted a little- again, as far back as I can remember he was like that- so he has to lean against something.  Given that Joseph has been partially melted for fifty years, it’s incredible that the rest of the pieces are intact.

I haven’t put up the outdoor lights yet, and there are still some indoor decorations to put up.  Every year I make a Christmas card display, using Command hooks to string lights on one wall, and clipping cards to the lights.  No need to put that up yet, because so far we only have one card.  I’ll continue to decorate as the month goes on.

I love how pretty and bright the house looks with the decorations up!

Do you decorate for Christmas?

How do you feel about outdoor lights and decorations? – I don’t enjoy putting them up, but I love how they look once I do it!

  1. I love your tree! And the bathroom is my kind of crazy. So fun! I also love that the cats have their own stuff. My tree and decor is going up today. The outside stuff I leave to the Caveman, although I’m not holding out much hope. He told me this morning he wants to throw out our lawn reindeer. Those are fighting words!

    1. Yes, the reason I do the outdoor lights is if I left it up to my husband, nothing would get done. He’s happy once the lights are up (I mean, once I put the lights up) but he really doesn’t care enough to do it himself.

  2. I saw the picture of the cats Christmas tree and saw the advent calendar and thought “No, it couldn’t possibly be…a cat advent calendar?” and then I scrolled down and IT WAS. That is hilarious and cute and just the funniest thing ever.

Also, I have never met another soul who changed out their shower curtain. You get all the brownie points for dedication!!!

We don’t actually do any outdoor decorations yet because our house has been a renovation zone for 2 of the past 4 Christmases, but I do put our main tree in front of the front window so hopefully that counts for a bit of something?! Right now we have staging (new siding goes up once the rain finally clears – we’ve had weeks of bad weather now) and a mud bog out our front door, so I feel like I get another pass this year for not decorating outside!

    1. Yes, you can be excused for not decorating outside! i kind of wish I had a good excuse, ha ha.
The cat advent calendar is really fun. Obviously the cats have no idea what’s going on, other than they get treats every day in December!

  3. We have not started decorating for Christmas yet, but I hope to get the tree up next weekend. We do some outside lights on our porch around four pillars, do a tree, and hang cards up around one of our doorframes, but that’s all the decorating that we do. I’m also super impressed with the fact that you change your shower curtain – that’s intense dedication!!

    1. Ha ha… that shower curtain is kind of a pain to do. That’s one of the reasons I decorate as early as possible- if I’m going to go to all the trouble, i want to enjoy it for a long time!

  4. Oh wow – a cat advent calendar! We have been unable to find any advent calendars (for humans 😁) in our town. I figured they are stuck in shipping somewhere! My Christmas tree is quite sparse. My family gives up on the decorations far sooner then I would like, and they think I’m a control freak if I try to decorate it more. So, it is what it is. I really like your family heirloom. Very nostalgic!

    1. That’s weird about the advent calendars! I’ve seen so many of them around here. The only one we own of course is the one for the cats, ha ha. Oh, and I always seem to be the one to finish decorating the tree- everyone else gets tired halfway through.

  5. The Advent Calendar for Cats is too beautiful! We have home “full” of cats and that could be the perfect gift for them!!!!
Here we use to decorate house, garden and tree on Dec. 8th. Of course our cats love to climb the Christmas tree.

    1. I can’t believe our cats have never tried to climb the Christmas tree! They get into everything else. I’m sure one of these days we’ll get a big surprise.

    1. Ha ha… our decorations definitely have “personality!” We won’t be featured in any magazines but that’s okay. We have personality.

  6. I love all of your decorations so much! I also love that your cats have their own tree. That’s adorable.

I was thinking that I need to start buying stuff to decorate my bathroom for Christmas, so if you’re not sane, I am not either! Hahaha.

    1. Ha ha, the bathroom decorations are super fun. So is the cat advent calendar! One of my cats knows what’s inside it now and sits near it meowing.
