walkers walk… but runners fly

New and Improved Weekend Vibes

Happy Weekend! I’m writing this post on Friday night. After I finished work today I 1) took a nap, 2) did some teenage chauffeuring duties, 3) made my way through an Iron Series workout (lunges and step ups- ouch) and ate dinner. No one else in the family was home, so after dinner I took a page from Kae’s book and cleaned the house!

I mean- the house is not pristine. But I cleaned the kitchen, did laundry, changed sheets, and just generally tidied up so it’s not terrible going into the weekend. I think Kae may be on to something here!

I also made a batch of “Graduation Crack” (aka Christmas Crack)…

For the kids only- I don’t touch this!

My daughter has been living it up, going to all sorts of graduation festivities- and she’s not even a senior. But her boyfriend graduated, so she’s attending parties with him.

Today someone asked me when my daughter is done with school. GREAT question- I think that depends on who you ask. The school district seems to think the last day is May 29th, but my daughter assures me that they’re “not doing anything” and therefore she only needs to go for certain periods, or not at all.

I’ve talked to her friend’s mom, and we can’t decide if this is correct, or if the kids are gaslighting us. I guess we’ll find out when we get their grades! Gulp. Meanwhile, end-of-school vibes are going strong around here.

Tomorrow morning I work, which I have mixed feelings about. On the one hand, no one wants to work on Saturday morning. BUT- I’ll be done at 1:30, I’ll come home to a nice, clean, EMPTY house (my husband will be working and my daughter will be out at yet another party) and I’ll feel completely justified in being as lazy as I want. I’m thinking a long nap and some reading time. Eventually I’ll go for a run, and then get myself Chipotle for dinner. I call that a pretty great Saturday.

What are you up to this weekend?

Do you want to jump on the “clean the house on Friday night” bandwagon? – It’s weirdly fun!

  1. what a great idea to clean the house to have it ready for your return tomorrow and chill.
i don’t clean the house but i do the tidy up when it’s almost unbeareable, especially over the weekend when we don’t have the lady. it gives me a sense of accomplishment more than it should.
today is another day of swim competition and we fly out tomorrow 4:30am to have a normal sunday at home.

    1. Ah, “I don’t clean the house.” LIFE GOALS! Seriously, I can imagine you giving it a nice cleaning on weekends, probably much better than what I do.

  2. Friday night means collapse and ignore reality here! Saturday morning is my cleaning/laundry time. I’ve had the routine for many years, and it means even if I miss a Saturday, the bathrooms stay pretty clean until I can get yo them. But then, I’m up early on Saturday anyways.
I just want to snuggle in on Sylvie.
PS- what kind of open campus does your daughter attend? Gosh, that would never fly here.

    1. I KNOW. When I was in high school, the attendance policy was much more strict. Now, the absences are reported but don’t seem to count against them in any way. It’s really strange.

  3. I cannot wrap my mind around school being done already! Our kids still have about a month left. But I am a ok with that! Your daughter has so much freedom to come and go at school. Mine was so strict. Like we could not leave for lunch even. And I feel like we were busy right up to the final day with finals prep and such. I feel bad for teachers of teens during that final month because everyone is so checked out – including the teachers!

    1. Yes, my high school was not like this! We absolutely weren’t allowed to leave campus, and unexcused absences were a big deal. I’m surprised this school is so lax.

  4. Friday night cleaning sounds like a great way to go into the weekend. When I was in grad school I did something similar with grocery shopping – Friday at 8 pm there was nobody in the store. Saturday it was packed all day, so I went on Friday evenings. Now I shamelessly take advantage of Walmart delivery pass and basically have our groceries all delivered, except for Flashfood purchases which are very quick trips in to customer service. It was 39$ for the year for me to never have to wrangle 4 kids in a grocery store. I miss browsing the aisles some but it also is definitely a money saving technique as it’s a lot harder to impulse buy. Sorry, that was a lot about grocery shopping 🤣

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    1. I would pay a lot more than $39 not to have to take kids to the grocery store!!! I wish these services had been available when my kids were little- especially my daughter. She was a nightmare in the store.

  5. Yes, but she’s a rising senior so she needs to join as many senior activities as she can so that she’s prepared for next year!

Back in my day there was no skipping class in high school, but I feel like it was different for the boys. Maybe there were things that they didn’t tell us, but they both graduated so they did enough of the right things.

My preferred house cleaning day is Thursday, so it’s the same spirit as the Friday house clean, just one day earlier so that Friday night can be fully lazy. The idea is that the house is in its best condition when folks are home the most.

Woo hoo for solo Jenny time!!! What’s your go-to Chipotle order?

    1. Ooh, here’s my Chipotle order: a bowl with brown rice, sofritas (tofu “meat”), fajita vegetables, medium salsa, pico, guac and lettuce. I learned the hard way that beans AND tofu is too much, so I just get the tofu. It is SO GOOD.

  6. Yesssss I did a Friday night clean the other week and it was very pleasing to have a clean house over the weekend. Alas, yesterday I simply looked at the accumulated stuff and sighed. I looooooove that caramelly chocolatey Saltine stuff. YUM.

    1. Ha, I can just picture myself completely forgetting how much I enjoyed it this week, and blowing it off (and never cleaning on Friday night again.) We’ll see!
I know, the Crack. I absolutely cannot take one bite, or I would eat the whole thing.

  7. The last day of school for the district I work for is next Thursday so it’s coming up fast! Unfortunately I work all year long but the summers feel more chill and there will be less traffic on the roads which is really nice.

Your weather must still be “cool” enough that you can run after work! Not here — we were in the 100s earlier this week and have dipped back into the 90s but it’s definitely morning run weather. I noticed a huge difference in the temps from the week before my race, it was still in the upper 50s when I was running at 7 am, and this week it was already in the 70s by then!

    1. I’m in the middle of listening to Sally McRae’s Cocodona recap- she was talking about how surprisingly cool it was for the first day.
It’s been around 90 here in the afternoon, but somehow, magically, I’ve been able to run. Not sure what’s up with that, but I’m enjoying it for now.

  8. Big believer in the Friday Cleaning here. When we were working and the kids were little, I used to set a 20 minute timer right after school on Friday and we’d clean the house in a frenzy. Everyone pitched in, they knew it was only for 20 minutes, and then they could get on with their lives. It’s surprising how much you can get done!

I don’t ever get Chipotle, and I have no idea why. There’s one fairly close to our house, and it would be perfect for Rick and me. He could get all the meat he wants, and I can go veg. NOTE TO SELF!

    1. Yes!!! Get Chipotle! Their pinto beans are so delicious, and they also have a tofu “meat” option which is flavorful and spicy. Plus.. guac. Yum.
I love the 20 minute timer idea. Yes, you can get a lot done in 20 minutes, especially if there are several people cleaning!

  9. I love Nance’s idea of setting a timer and everyone pitching in. Genius. Since I work from home, I can clean whenever, so I never do it on weekends. I prefer to get paid to clean, meaning, do it during slow periods of my work day, and NOT do it on my ‘me time’. I know this doesn’t work for most folks.

I haven’t had chipotle in ages. My husband cooks on Saturdays, and has decided he’s not cooking tonight, so just ordered take out. Fine by me, as long as I don’t have to cook, I’m good with it. I’m having a southwestern salad. YUM.

  10. Yes, your method of cleaning wouldn’t work for me- I’m envious of people who work from home! I can see how you’d be motivated to clean during the workday and reserve your time off for more pleasant things.
I hope you enjoyed your salad!
