walkers walk… but runners fly

The Great Mug Tour

The other day, Tobia gave us a tour of her notebook collection.  I think she said she has 37 notebooks, all filled with lists, drawings, business details, and random ideas.  She loves her notebooks!

It got me thinking about the things I collect, and I realized I derive an insane amount of pleasure from my mugs.  So much so that I have pictures on my phone of most of my mugs, as well as pictures of Starbucks cups from various seasons.  Maybe it’s because I drink the same thing everyday- Earl Grey tea (did you know the bergamot in earl grey is a natural anti-depressant?) so I like to vary the vessel holding it.  Here I present you with my favorites…starting with the “everyday” mugs.

This one was a gift from my sister.  My cat Charlotte has really big eyes, and my sister thought she resembles the cat on this mug.

Charlotte! You’re on a mug!

Moving along.  My son is currently a freshman at Baylor University in Texas.  No, he’s not into sports and he didn’t choose the school because it’s in Texas.  He chose it because they have a great music school, and he wanted to study with the trumpet teacher there.  I drove him to school in August, and saying goodbye to him was one of the saddest moments of my life.  But all is well!  He’s doing great and will be home for Thanksgiving.  I bought this mug to remind me of that mother-son road trip.

Okay, let’s get to the fun stuff- holiday mugs!!!  Here’s the best fall mug ever, once again a gift from my sister.

Yes.  I am the Crazy Pumpkin Lady.  Every fall I get extremely excited to put out my pumpkin decorations and start making all the pumpkin foods.  The fun thing is, my sister has the same mug so we text each other pictures of our fall breakfasts with the mug.  She’s the Almost-as-Crazy Pumpkin Lady.

This next simple and unassuming mug is currently my second-favorite for fall.  I got it a couple years ago at Pier 1- boy, am I sad that store has closed!  They had the best stuff.

Obviously, everyone needs a Halloween mug (right?)  This was a random find- I was at the mall, walked through Macy’s because I was looking for a bathroom, and saw a display of Halloween items.  I love the little spider on this one.

This is yet another fall mug that for some reason I’m been neglecting lately- must start using it more before the season is over!

And here’s my Thanksgiving mug!  I generally only take this out the week of Thanksgiving.  Yes, I realize it’s a little strange to have a mug that sits in my cabinet 51 weeks out of the year.  Once again, I found it at Pier 1- it was super cheap on clearance and I couldn’t resist.

I think we’re all mugged-out for now, so I’ll do part two of this post later in the month.  My Christmas mugs deserve their own post, and besides they’re hidden away right now.  My husband clearly does not understand mug etiquette, and I’ve caught him drinking out of Christmas mugs in the middle of the summer.  No, no, no!  Christmas mugs are not allowed until the day after Thanksgiving!  Sheesh.  Everyone knows that.

Thanks for joining me for Day 9 of NaBloPoMo!  In case anyone is wondering what mugs have to do with running, tomorrow’s post will be more running-related.  In the meantime, stay hydrated (and caffeinated!)

Do you love mugs?  Or do you not care what you drink out of?

Coffee, or tea?  – Always Earl Grey!  I don’t like coffee.

Don’t Want To…

Do you ever have a morning where your alarm goes off and you’re like… “Nope!”  That’s the way I felt this morning.  There was nothing

  1. I have a small collection of mugs that I adore. Most of them are from my single days when I needed a lot of mugs because it took a long time to fill up the dishwasher. Now I keep them because they make me happy. I think I’m going to have to borrow this idea for a post.

I’m Team Coffee but I’ve learned from experience that I don’t sleep well if I have more than one cup, so I limit myself to one cup a day. The size of the “one cup” varies though;-) I occasionally drink tea in the afternoons if I want something warm.

  2. One of my husband’s for real pet peeves is mismatched mugs. He absolutely hates it. So, of course, my mom and sister send me mugs on a regular basis as gifts. I generally use the same mug every day (it’s the “It’s leviOsa, not leviosA” mug you saw) because it’s Hermione, of course, but also because it’s huge and holds 20 ounces of fluid.

I miss Pier 1, too. It was always a great place to find gifts for people. I guess World Market will have to fill that hole now.

    1. World Market is also great but we don’t have one near us- darn.
I really do love your Hermione mug- and I like larger mugs that hold 20 oz. too.

  3. You, Jenny, are a person of my own heart … I am a HUGE mug addict (hence the Secret Santa (Mug) Swap LOL). I have a huge collection and always “need” more… I show my mugs regularly on Instagram.

Are you partial to a certain style/size? It looks like you have a big variety of shapes and sizes. For me, it’s all about the size and feel – I can’t really describe it. Maybe I’ll have to think about this a little more. I definitely should share some of my favorite mugs sometime this month! I also absolutely agree that seasonal mugs CANNOT – I repeat, CANNOT – be used year-round. Sheeesh, I need to have a word with your husband 😉

    1. Yes! Do a mug post!
Mine don’t have to be a specific size or shape, but they do have to fit comfortably in my hand. Some mugs are beautiful, but too heavy. And in general I’m partial to larger mugs (but not heavy!)

  4. I love this! I too collect mugs and it drives my husband crazy. My current favorites include that new Ice Age Trail mug and my Wisconsin Badgers mug. I just love drinking coffee from a mug that has a sentiment attached to it!

  5. I love this. Nothing makes a day brighter (or cup of tea/coffee taste better) than drinking from a good mug. I love mugs. But I am also a minimalist at heart, so I tend to downsize them regularly!
I’m super pumped to participate in San’s Secret Santa Mug Exchange!

Also, I have always loved Earl Grey – no idea about the natural benefits of the bergamot. Makes me doubly happy that I had a giant mug of it yesterday at my favourite cafe. I’ve been on a big Chai kick lately since I ran out of Earl Grey. I need to fix that stat.

    1. Yes, I’m excited about the mug exchange as well! I guess mugs are popular. And yes- you need more Earl Grey! Chai is good too though.

  6. MUGS!!! I love mugs!!!
Right now I am sitting here with a mug of black tea with a spot of milk. The mug is HUGE and I got it from – you guessed it – my sister. I use it every day.
I can only resist buying ALL THE MUGS because we have limited space.
I only drink tea as well – in a very strict order in the morning: green tea, black tea, then chai.
Looking forward to your next mug post, Jenny!

    1. Ha ha, you do have a strict tea schedule! Yes, we really don’t have a lot of space either- otherwise I would definitely have more mugs than I already own!

  7. I love all of your mugs! Especially the cat mug. 🙂 And yes, Christmas mugs can only be used during Christmastime. Haha.

I wish I had more room for more mugs. Or maybe I just need to invest in some shelves to hold more of my mugs since one shelf in a cabinet just isn’t cutting it!

  8. Also tea, I don’t like coffee either. Except I drink many different kinds of tea!

I started collecting mugs from my travels even before I started running. I have a TX mug, too (which one of my cats knocked over and it has no handle but I like just holding it without the handle anyway). The TX mug also reminds me of my parents in better days — they were visiting when I bought that mug.

I’ve written a few post about my mugs, too! I have no holiday mugs, though. I had a Hannukah one my parents gave me, but I didn’t like it so donated it a long time ago.

    Yours are very cute!

  9. I love that you shared your collection after I opened my drawer for you. Those mugs are fun. I can totally understand that you need certain mugs for certain festivities. I don’t have fancy mugs now its more clean and minimalistic in my house now. But I need to have a big mug for my tea. I just hate when it is such a small cup that you run to the kitchen every 10 minutes. Most important thing is a big one. I didn’t know the bergamot in Earl gray has that effect. I usually have a coffee followed by an earl grey with a dash of milk in the mornings. Looking forward to your Christmas collection.
