walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Blah.

Well, it’s Sunday again so I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah as usual for the Weekly Rundown!  I’m also joining San and fourteen other bloggers for NaBloPoMo– 30 blog posts for the 30 days of November.  In addition, San is hosting her annual Secret Santa Mug Swap. Head over to her page before November 17th if you want to participate!

Let’s talk about the week.  My daughter described it as “the worst week ever.”  I wouldn’t go quite that far, but it was pretty frustrating.  Here’s how it went:

Sunday

Instead of a long run, I just ran 5 miles and hightailed it home to watch the NYC Marathon.  It was a pleasant run and a pleasant day… nothing special.

Monday

I’m still working my way through Caroline Girvan’s Iron Series on YouTube.  You may remember a couple weeks ago, I hurt a mystery muscle around my ribs/back/side and had to skip Day #14, which was a full body strength workout.  Well, that muscle still hurts but I’m forging ahead anyway, so I went back to complete that workout.

Tuesday

No school because of election day.  I ran 4 miles, then did my plyometrics and Planksgiving.  Hahahahaha…. who am I kidding.  I’m totally not doing any kind of planking challenge- I keep forgetting.  I think I did a plank three times this week.  Oh well!

In the afternoon we got the news that due to Hurricane Nicole, school would be canceled for Wednesday and Thursday.  This canceled what probably would have been the two best days of the whole year for my daughter- she was supposed to have a big field trip, AND a rehearsal and performance for a county-wide jazz band.  Lots of tears and anger around here.

Wednesday

Well, we obviously have a major storm heading our way so I better get a run in while I can!  Another 4 mile run, then home for a gloomy, rainy day.

Thursday

Oh guess what- the storm didn’t hit us after all!  I started the day with Caroline Girvan Day #19 (continuing where I left off before I went back to make up Day #14) which was another full body strength workout.

I left a sullen and disappointed daughter at home while I went to work… where I discovered all my clients had canceled because they thought there was going to be a hurricane.  I was in a really bad mood- until I realized how ridiculous it was to be upset that a hurricane DIDN’T hit us.  We’re LUCKY.  Our house is intact and we didn’t lose our power.  Onward!

Friday

Don’t ask me why, in our red, red state, our kids aren’t off for Veteran’s Day.  It makes no sense, but I’ve learned not to question these things.  I’m all for honoring our veterans- but I’m glad they had school.  We had to get back to normal.

I did a 3 mile run, followed by plyometrics and my “poor man’s Planksgiving.”

Saturday

OFF!

Sunday

On tap for today- a much needed trail run.  Two weeks ago I went 10.5 so I’ll run 11 or 12… we’ll see.  I was hoping some cooler air would blow in after our “storm” but so far it’s still warm and muggy here.  Whatever!  I just need to run.

This was a really blah week, with a lot of gloomy weather and canceled events.  The two strength workouts I did were good, but it seems like it’s taking me forever to work my way through this series (there are 30 workouts and I’m now on #20.) I’m liking Caroline Girvan, but I have something planned next, which I’ll talk about soon (ooh!  Suspense!)

How was your week?  Were you affected by Nicole?  Are you having colder weather? (Please send some our way!)

  1. Ugh. Just…ugh.
What a crummy week. And even though there are huge silver linings (namely, Nicole didn’t do any damage in your area) – it is still a HUGE bummer. I’m so sorry for your daughter (and vicariously, you) for the major disappointments. I know she has to wait until APRIL for the band event and the field trip is not going to get rescheduled (?), so that’s HUGE. And I would have been so, so frustrated by the cancellation of clients – again, understandable given the potential forecast, but also so, so frustrating).

I’m really hoping next week is looking better and brighter for you, my friend!

My week was okay – lots of sickness, which went relatively smoothly on my end to deal with, but I realized two things yesterday after being cooped up inside the majority of the last week:
    1) I get restless when I don’t fit in a good, long, hard outside workout at least once a week. I’ve mostly just done my 1 km walk outside, since I’ve been home solo. I can tell my body is restless; also, food doesn’t taste as good because I’m just not as hungry since I haven’t been moving enough. Demerit to me for not using the treadmill, but Friday was 20 degrees and sunny and I was trapped inside with two sick kids and I just couldn’t bear the thought of using the treadmill on a day like that.
    2) I seriously had these temporary lapses when – since we’d been home so much – it felt like we were in another pandemic lockdown. We had A LOT of those in Nova Scotia, including last year around Christmas. I realized it wasn’t actually because of COVID we were home so long, but it gave me this weird set of “flashbacks” almost and I honestly felt claustrophobic in those moments and cannot believe we did…like almost a year (in total – with all the lockdowns) of being stuck at home.

    1. Oh yes, and your area was VERY strict with the lockdowns! I can see why this week gave you flashbacks.
It seems like a lot of people had challenging circumstances this week- definitely not just me! Next week will be better.

  2. Crummy weather? Not too much until the end of the week. It was really warm here and even though it wasn’t normal, it sure felt good. But those 32 degree temps sure felt jarring! We had snow and rain at my son’s rugby game in Indiana (lake effect) but none here, thankfully. Tell your daughter to blame her misfortune on the full moon last week. It always works for me! I had an absolutely terrible week at work and an RA flare. So there you go.

    1. Yes, your week sounded very challenging! I guess I should stop complaining. Okay, we’ll try to blame it all on the full moon.

  3. No Nicole (or her dram or effects), but our weather drastically “cooled off” once Thursday afternoon arrived. We also had some snow flurries as a result, but nothing made iff to to the ground (other than frost). Sorry to hear about your tough week!

  4. I am so glad you did not get hit w the hurricane. We got all the rain and it was torrential here but obviously not hurricane just annoying. When you are 14, everything is annoying right!? Hope you get that nice long run in today and have a better week ahead

  5. Oooh suspense!!!!

Nicole came through on Friday which meant buckets of rain and then the off switch on warmth. We’ve got winter wonderland style snow falling but it’s not sticking yet (note to self – must get snow tires installed). I’d be happy to trade that in for something warmer!

    1. Wow, you have snow! I like the idea of that… but I wouldn’t want to be there. I guess I’ll take our warm, muggy weather.

  6. I’m glad you didn’t get hit with the hurricane, but feel bad for your daughter!

I don’t think I’ve ever had off for Veteran’s Day, work or school…or for election day! Don’t worry, Dustin and I did our part and mailed in our ballots from London weeks ago!

Great job with your strength training! Now is the time for me to check out your program since my marathon is done and I should use this time for some serious strength! You’re my inspiration!

    1. I’m SO mad because we forgot to arrange for our son to vote by absentee ballot (although things were pretty hopeless down here anyway.) We won’t make that mistake for the next election!
I’ll be interested to hear if you like Caroline- she definitely has a following.

  7. LOL on your poor man’s planksgiving. Sorry about the gloomy weather and needless cancellations, but hopefully you feel better now that things are clearing up and getting back to normal.

We no longer get Veterans Day as a holiday because they gave in and made Black Friday a day off for everyone. My husband had off though.

    1. So Black Friday is more important than Veteran’s Day? If I were a veteran I might be kind of mad about that. Although seriously… it would be nice to have the day after Thanksgiving off.

  8. Oh that all sounds so disruptive and frustrating! And for nothing! I always feel so bad for the kids when they miss school events that they were really looking forward to.

Hoping that this week is much kinder to you all.

I am not sure we had any effects from Nicole at all, but we did get rain Friday and now have snow… but that’s kind of par for the course for November here anyway.

    1. This should be a good week… and then the schools are closed for a week for Thanksgiving! My daughter gets very bored at home- but having my son home should help.

  9. Oh I’m so sorry for your daughter. I know how hard they work toward those events and it absolutely sucks to have them cancelled. I am glad though that you missed out on Nicole. I too wondered why Veterans Day was not a day off school here. Seems like it should be to me. It’s icy cold here now but I cannot complain. Having it be 76 degrees and sunny most of the week was amazing.

  10. Unfortunately yes to the cooler weather. But it does make for some pretty good running weather!

Wow, no school on election day? I remember being in school as people voted in our school . . . oh how times have changed. Hugs to you & your daughter.

I hope you have a delightful trail run today! I thought it might be blah for me with the leaves gone but I still enjoyed it. I also enjoyed NOT running long, LOL!

    1. Yes, we have no school because some of the schools are used for voting. If I had to guess, I’d say they can’t have voting while the students are in school because of the strict security measures. Very different from when we were kids!
It looks like you have great running weather! I’m envious… but soon it will be way too cold for me up there.

  11. No Nicole, fortunately, but we did get cold front that seems to have officially brought the end to our second summer. All the leaves are off the trees, there’s frost in the morning, and we spotted some flurries last night.

Seems like a good week of working out, though, despite your poor man’s Planksgiving. If it makes you feel better, doing planks three times a week is better than my “only when they are absolutely required in yoga” routine!

  12. Besides some much needed rain we have glorious California fall weather with the most beautiful sunsets. I really can’t complain. My week was a good one. Work was good, kids are happy there is not really much to say about it.

  13. Blah sounds about right, though all of your running sounds great! I haven’t been doing any strength training lately, just walking the dog for a couple of miles in the mornings before work. I need to change that. Thanks for the motivation!

  14. We had rain on Thursday from Nicole, but not as much as expected – most of it went west of us.

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve pretty much forgotten Planksgiving as well. I’ll think of it when I’m not working out, then totally forget about it when I should. LOL

  15. That’s a really frustrating week. We don’t have the type of weather that you need to stay home (no snow and no tropical storms), so we’re pretty fortunate.

I have to get onto my strength training. While we’re away from our neighbourhood I’ll be missing my KX pilates classes, which I’ve been using for strength training. I’m much more consistent if it’s classes, not trying to do it on my own.

    1. Hmm, interesting! I grew up near Chicago, so we had snow days. And we also had “cold” days where it was too cold to go to school (fun times.) The thought of living somewhere without any extreme weather is intriguing.

  16. Winter has arrived here… It was in the 20/30s this weekend and it’s snowing now. Chances are it will warm up a bit and the snow may melt but not anytime soon. Womp womp. But at least it’s pretty outside?

Last week was another rough week for workouts. I ran Monday with my neighbor and did a lower body workout in the hotel on Tuesday and then that was it until I ran yesterday. So November isn’t any better than October was. But hopefully I’ll have a healthy stretch ahead!

I’ll be curious to see what you are doing next!

    1. BRR! Well… at least your boys can play in the snow. My kids have let me know how disappointed they are to have grown up without snow (sigh.)
Don’t worry… even with the amount of exercise you feel like you’re NOT getting, you’re probably still doing more than the average population. A time will come- hopefully soon- when you can be more consistent. You’re doing just fine.

  17. The suspense!! I’m curious what you have planned next. My next move is to get a new gym membership. I am just not motivated to do weights at home! That does stink about the school stuff being canceled. I’m not sure my kids will ever know but I always tried so hard to make sure they wouldn’t miss out on anything (with appointments or travel). It’s tough when you have control, but super frustrating when you don’t have a choice!

    1. Okay Lisa I’ll give you a hint… you and I have the same idea.
My daughter has a real “thing” about not missing school, and as a matter of fact has a perfect attendance record for all of middle school (and she’s now in her third year.) Of course if school is canceled that’s one thing (but she’s mad about it) but if school is open she HAS to be there. Don’t even ask me how we got through Covid this way… she really hasn’t been sick.

  18. That is frustrating, I’m sorry! We came back from sunny Spain on Saturday to rain rain rain, no big storms, we’re fine, but it’s a bit of a downer, esp for husband, who has actual Seasonal Affective Disorder.

  19. OMG. So you get Election Day but not Veterans Day! That’s crazy. We don’t get Election Day, and our schools closed just for Thursday AND we got smacked. Not like Ian, but lots of erosion and damage at the beach. So sad.

I hope your daughter gets her fun activities rescheduled. I’m not getting excited for anything anymore. I’m tired of being disappointed.

    1. Yes, I was wondering how badly you got hit! One of my daughter’s events was rescheduled for April (?) and one can’t be rescheduled at all. You’re right- at this point having things canceled has become the norm.

  20. That’s so interesting that schools are closed for election day in your area! They are open here. I wish it was a national holiday, although it wouldn’t help the people who REALLY need the flexibility around voting times, like those who work shift jobs. But still. It would be something!

It’s been SO GLOOMY here since Nicole. And now the cold weather has arrived and I am living for it!

    1. Yes, it got a little cooler here as well- YAY! The schools have always been closed for election day here because some of them are voting locations.
