walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Not the Usual Week!

Hello!!! This was a fun week, as it was our annual trip to Tampa, where my daughter played in the All State band. I also had an unusual “long cardio” sessio at the gymn. When we left off last week I was worried about some pain in my calf, so I babied it a little this week (as far as running went). Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown. Here’s how it all played out…

Monday

I was still being cautious of my calf, so I did a short lower body strength workout and 30 minutes on the elliptical.

Tuesday

I did my favorite Caroline Girvan deadbug workout, and an upper body strength workout.

Wednesday

This would have been a long trail run, but I was afraid to stress my calf that much. Instead, I did a FOUR HOUR cardio session in the gym. It broke down like this: one hour on the bike, one hour on the elliptical, 45 minutes running on the treadmill, 30 minutes back on the bike, and the last 45 minutes running on the treadmill. NO CALF PAIN!

Woohoo!

As you can see, I’m using KT tape as a precaution. I don’t really know if it does anything, but it can’t hurt.

In the afternoon, we drove to Tampa and checked into our hotel.

Thursday

So much walking! My daughter was rehearsing in the convention center, which was about a mile from our hotel. I walked over five miles back and forth- and my calf was still fine.

Friday

I had a GREAT strength session in the hotel gym. A really thorough upper body workout, all my hip stability exercises, and planks.

I realized- the reason I enjoyed this so much was that I had the gym to myself until the very end, when one other woman came in. So much better than working out at EOS, which is always crowded.

Saturday

Running! 4 miles with no pain. This run was on the treadmill in the hotel gym because of the weather (COLD) and also our location, which was right downtown. Not ideal for running.

I followed this run with squats- as heavy as I could do with dumbbells- and planks.

My daughter’s concert was in the afternoon, and my husband had to stay to see a student perform in a concert at night. THEN, driving home- ouch. It’s a long drive late at night.

Sunday

Sleeping in, obviously! Laundry… shopping… and getting ready for the Bears game!

Coming up soon… further adventures in Tampa.

How was your week?

Are you watching football this weekend?

  1. Good to hear the calf pain went away as the week went on! Sounds like you did the right thing. I used to use KT tape quite a bit for my aches but haven’t used it in a long time. It really does work though!
It is a luxury to have a gym (mostly) to yourself. Even better that the gym had good equipment.
I know this is late, but congrats on your son’s engagement!! That is so exciting.

  2. Unusual is good! I didn’t realize that you drove down right after your gym blitz – that was a long day!

Good job on not hurting, Calf! Now just keep it up!

    1. Thanks Coco! Yes, I didn’t even realize how much other people cramp my style in the gym until I had this gym all to myself. I need a better home gym situation.

  3. So glad your calf is behaving! I was going to say that looks like a nice hotel gym.
I honestly don’t think I’d be as dedicated to working out if I had to cope with a crowded gym.

    1. Yes, the crowded gym is a real deterrent! I don’t know what to do about it- maybe try to work out at a different time? But I think my gym is almost always crowded.

  4. Glad to hear the calf seems to be feeling okay – even with all the activity! Holy moly FOUR HOUR cardio session? And then normal activities the next day like it’s no big deal! Hoping you continue to feel alright and enjoy that hotel gym!

  5. I am glad your calf is feeling better! I hope that continues to be the case! You had a great week of workouts even with all the disruptions to your schedule!

I had a good week of workouts and did a couple of CG strength + some OTF. I’ll go to OTF today and tomorrow. I’m really loving the CG iron series after doing her fuel series, which had so many burpees! I prefer iron!!

I was supposed to go to Boston this week but a few meetings canceled so we canceled the trip. I was not sad about that! My fun event of the week was going to something called ‘luminescence’ at a Basilica in Minneapolis. It’s a light show with an orchestra and choir. It was gorgeous and such a peaceful experience!

    1. Oh good- you didn’t have to travel! It sounds like a really nice week. Yes, I really like the Iron Series. I can’t do burpees- it would kill my wrists.
      That concert/light show sounds amazing!

  6. Sounds like a great week for you! I’m so glad your calf is feeling better. That 4 hour workout is crazy, lol. But you got it done and pain-free at that.

    Have a good week!

    1. Thank you Wendy! I did feel a little crazy, ha, but I had to get something done. Hopefully next week I’ll be out on the trail!

  7. 4 hours of gym cardio, wow! Glad it worked out for you and your calf! Hopefully you can get back to more runs outside again.

I finished my 60K very early this morning! It took several hours longer than expected due to the terrain which was rocky and relentless which really slowed me down. My feet are incredibly sore but I’m just happy for a finish!

    1. CONGRATULATIONS! A 60k with rocky terrain sounds REALLY hard- I don’t have experience with that kind of trail. I hope you have tomorrow off so you can relax and recover.

  8. It is always welcome to have the hotel gym to yourself. Since our Eagles flamed out, we are not Bears fans for our soon to be son in law and daughter. Glad to hear your calf is starting to feel better. Have a great week ahead

    1. Thank you Deborah! I’m assuming that was “we are NOW Bears fans” because they live in Chicago, right? We can all root for them together!

  9. First and most importantly, yay on your calf not giving you any pain last week. I hope it continues to stay healthy. Like you said, the tape isn’t hurting and maybe that’s what has helped.

It sounds like you had a fun trip to Tampa and it’s great that the hotel had a good gym. Now you understand why I love my basement gym so much – I always workout alone!

    1. Oh yes- I’m VERY envious. I would seriously be much more into strength training if I could do it alone in a home gym.

  10. I’m glad the calf is feeling better! Wow, that’s an intense four hours of cardio! At least you were able to mix it up with a variety of workouts I think the longest I’ve ever gone on the elliptical is (maybe?) 45 minutes. The bike, though, well that’s another story, LOL.

    1. I’m not sure I could have done an entire 4 hours on just one thing without going insane. Mixing it up was the key. I think I could go longer on the elliptical than I could on the bike, but hopefully I won’t be called upon to test that theory.

  11. 4 hours in the gym? Wow.

    Good news about the calf.

    Hope it stays pain free.

Snow and sickness here. A very boring weekend.

    1. Yuck, snow and sickness is a bad combo. Or, maybe it’s good, you can be sick while the weather is bad. I hope you feel better soon!

  12. Four hours in the gym. Whoa! But glad the calf behaved. Hope Tampa was fun for all of you, especially your daughter.

  13. Great week, Jenny, and that’s such good news about your calf! How nice to have the gym to yourself. That’s the best! Your dumbbell rows look great. Nice with a good selection of equipment in a hotel gym!
There’s been a decent week here, I just wish we could ever get back into the all-Irish variable weather instead of cold all the time.

    1. It’s funny Susanne, because the first set I filmed and didn’t love my form. So I did it again and they looked better on the second set! I guess I should video myself on a regular basis to check form.

  14. Jenny, it’s cold and snowy here so a lot of my exercise has been shoveling. As a matter of fact, I shoveled this morning AND IT’S SNOWING AGAIN. That’s okay. My shoulders need the work.

I’m glad your calf is cooperating. I can’t wait to see if it holds up next week!

    1. Ha, me too! I have high hopes. I know it’s been super cold up there- I follow the weather in that area because of my sister and son. Shoveling is good cardio, and strength training!

  15. I am watching football this weekend. I am a Niners fan, so yesterday was not pretty for me. But, it happens. Watching the Bears game now, but being from Cali, I feel like I should support the Rams. 🙂 But, no strong feelings on this one. I am so impressed by your cardio session! Working has not been something I’ve prioritized for quite a while and it is hard to shift that gear back into forward motion. I swam competitively for over two decades and often worked out multiple times in a day. So, I know how good it feels, but I feel like intertia is really hard to overcome! Glad you are doing it and maybe I will get inspired!

  16. Still impressed by your 4 hour workout! I hope the care you are giving your calf pays off and there are no injuries in your future.

I don’t care about football, which is a good thing because even I know that it would have been fun to have the 49ers in the Super Bowl at Levi Stadium.

  17. Can’t wait to hear about your trip! We will be in Tampa in November, and I’m excited to enjoy some of the sights. How far is it for you?

I’m so glad to hear that your calf is holding up with all that cardio! that’s a huge win!

  18. Woah, a 4-hour gym session. Dang, that’s dedication, Jenny. Nice work! And I do think the KTape helps, or at least doesn’t hurt 😉
I hope your calf keeps behaving!

I had a strong week – felt really good through all my workouts! When does that ever happen? I’ll take it.
