walkers walk… but runners fly

A Demerit, and Two Gold Stars

I’ve mentioned that as soon as I get into my house, I put on pajamas (my “daytime” pajamas, not to be confused with the pajamas I sleep in at night). On Friday evening, I had to pick my daughter up from her friend’s house. Since I didn’t plan to get out of the car, I didn’t bother to change out of my pajamas.

Well. As I was driving, I realized I desperately needed gas. Oh well- I can pump gas in my pajamas. I mean, it’s dark, no one will really notice. But when I got to the gas station, all the pumps were CASH ONLY, which meant… I had to go inside to pay. Crap!

I tried to act confident, as if this were a fashion choice rather than a horrible mistake. My daughter said “I guess anything can look good if you wear it with confidence.” Really? I looked good? I doubt it.

Double demerit that it was Halloween pajamas on November 7th.

Anyway! As Gretchen Rubin would say, take us up with a gold star! First, I’m giving myself a gold star for going through the Christmas wrapping paper.

Before
And after!

It was one of those nagging tasks that really didn’t take long, once I got started.

A bonus gold star goes to the cats! There was SO MUCH DRAMA when Foxy first came to live with us- and now look at them:

And here they are again- Muffin kept getting annoyed that Foxy was putting his feet on her, but not annoyed enough to leave.

Even Charlotte is tolerating the situation!

She’ll tolerate just about anything when dinner is about to be served.

Do you have any recent wardrobe demerits?

Have you done any Christmas prep yet?

Why Am I Doing This?

Hey there! I haven’t had a Deep Thoughts post in a while, and I know how much everyone has been

  1. Actually, Jenny, the moment I saw the name of today’s blog post, I was like, “I know exactly which author you quoted from when you used the term ‘demerits’ and ‘gold stars'”. Indeed, you went on to identify her in your 4th paragraph.
I do not recall any wardrobe demerits this year.
I’m actually not sure which things I do count as Christmas prep. I’m certainly not going through the Christmas wrapping paper. I make things with 3D Printers and give them as gifts to others all year round. But I don’t need to wrap them in any wrapping paper before I hand them to the other person. There are still opportunities for me to make the most out of the rest of this year so that it does not look to me like a wasted year, but I’m not sure how that’s related to Christmas prep. During the time period that is actually between Dec 24 and Jan 1, there will be one thing that I do always need to plan for, yes. If you’d like to know what that is, Jenny, I can tell you more.

    1. Well, I am intrigued about this mystery thing to plan for! Please share if you’d like.
i know not everyone wraps presents, and honestly it is kind of wasteful. We really don’t use wrapping paper except at Christmas- which is why my wrapping paper was in such disarray, it’s been sitting there for ten months.

      1. What I’ll actually plan for my holidays from Dec 24 to Jan 1 is that I’ll need to always count how many days are left for this holiday. When there are just 2 days left in this holiday, I’ll need to make the transition from holiday mode to work mode. Failure at this transition is basically not an option. So that’s what I do need to plan for.
Indeed, I count how many days are left in a holiday by preparing some paper debris and throwing 1 piece of paper debris into the garbage bin per day. The number of paper debris that is left represents the number of days left in this holiday. I prepare for those paper debris after Dec 20 as opposed to in November.

  2. What a nice sight, to see cats coexisting! I knew Foxy would win Muffin over. Muffin is a surprise bonus!
No Christmas prep- I will ignore that until after Thanksgiving. We are trying to think of an experience gift, as my husband has finally acknowledged that our kids have enough stuff. Probably won’t happen- he has a little kid need to see presents under the tree.

    1. Ha, I have that same little kid need, I have to admit. Christmas should have lots of presents under the tree. I agree it does get harder as the kids get older, and they definitely do get some “experience” gifts as well.

  3. Your kitties are so cute! How wonderful that they are getting along — or at least tolerating one another.

Your pajama story cracked me up. I am sure it’s not the first time someone has walked into the gas station wearing Halloween pajamas. It pleases me greatly that you and I share the habit of changing into daytime pajamas the instant we get home, and that we have daytime pajamas and sleeping pajamas. I would wear pajamas 100% of the time if it were socially acceptable.

    1. Well apparently I’m getting closer and closer to that 100%! Good thing I have to go out to work 9and definitely CAN’T wear pajamas for that), otherwise I might not ever put on regular pants again.

  4. I think you deserve ALL THE GOLD STARS for prioritizing comfort and I need to get some daytime jammies soon. I think it’s genius.

I actually enjoy the dark evenings, what I hate is the dark + cold combo. If it was dark and warm I would be in Heaven. But now the vehicle is frigid and anytime I have to leave the house in the evening I feel very grumpy about it.

I have done very little Christmas prep, BUT my daughter has taken it upon herself to start decorating the house so whether I was ready or not, the decorations are coming 😉

    1. Good thing you have Belle! My house is currently decorated for Thanksgiving, with little Christmas things here and there.
      You definitely need daytime pajamas!

  5. Way to go kitties! Gold stars for everyone!

My biggest wardrobe demerit was back when we first got Doggo which was before we had a fence. Anytime that she went out, we had to go out, and sometimes she would just want a quick outing in the backyard and sometimes she would walk up and down the street sniffing everything for 20 minutes. Because it was spring, our backyard was very muddy, so the only footwear choice was a big ol’ pair of mud boots. In the mornings I would be wearing my PJs and the boots, and there were many days when we would end up pacing around in the street for a good long while. I’m sure I was quite the sight.

    1. Ha ha… I knew exactly where you were going with that story. When my kids were little I definitely had situations like that, where I thought we were just going out the the driveway for a moment, and then ended up traipsing all over the neighborhood, dressed completely inappropriately.

  6. Hahaha I love that you have daytime pajamas and nighttime pajamas. Prior to the picture, I was thinking like yoga pants or sweatpants, but no, those jack o’ lanterns truly are pajamas!!! Probably no one noticed anyway, but it’s a great story (post idea: fashion show of daytime versus nighttime pajamas).
Glad your kitties are getting along! And what a smart idea to organize the wrapping paper in such a way!

    1. Ooh… that could be a blog post. Especially since I was just going through the Christmas bins and spotted my beloved Christmas (daytime) pajamas!
Yes- ironically my nighttime pajamas are more plain, and you wouldn’t immediately think they were pajamas. I obviously make no sense.

  7. I didn’t know you had daytime pajamas, but that’s kind of genius. Loved the kitten pictures, and definitely gold star to you for doing some holiday inventory. I was just listening to the Deck the Halls episode of Happier and thinking I should do some of the tasks.

    1. I listened to that episode too! And I also went through my bins and got out my Christmas cards. I already feel more on track this year than previous years.

  8. So, I live in a university town and seeing people pump gas or go into a grocery store in pajamas is really just normal here. I had a wardrobe-related demerit on Friday night when my daughter and I went to see a musical in the city. The parking garage is a 4 minute walk from the theatre and she runs so hot that I didn’t want her to be uncomfortable in the tiny seats, so we did not wear coats. For the last 3 shows we saw, we just did out walk and walked right in! Of course, that was not the case this time… there was a delay, we ended up standing in line outside for 30 minutes, I may have been shivering haha! Lesson learned, for sure.

    1. Ack! That’s a temperature/wardrobe demerit, and it sounds VERY uncomfortable.
Hmm. Maybe if someone were partially blind, they would think I was a teenager getting gas. Well- that would have worked if I hadn’t had to go inside. Whatever!

  9. I think clothing standards have changed so much since the pandemic that your pj pants probably didn’t attract much attention! I wouldn’t have been thrilled to go into a store in pjs but needs must, right? I mean I see teens/tweens in pjs in public all the time so the rules have really changed!

The only Christmas prep I’ve done is to start a wish list for the boys. It is very hard to come up with ideas for bday and Christmas gifts for Taco, though. I know you can relate w/ kids w/ December birthdays. We are also trying to plan his bday party. At 5, the kids get their first friend party. It’s such a terrible time of year to host a party w/ our weather being cold and unpredictable. Once he has a more established friend circle, we are definitely moving to a half birthday celebration like you’ve done! I will be putting our tree up this coming weekend, though! Hurrah!!

  10. Big demerit for me is that I am procrastinating on buying new leggings for the season and have now THREE TIMES worn leggings to school that have holes in them. I am supposed to be a professional! Oh, well. You are not alone in wardrobe errors.

  11. I had to read the pj’s part out loud to my husband, it was just so funny! I haven’t had a wardrobe booboo lately, but my son did. He had his 2 grandchildren at a park when his grandson pointed out a big hole in Derek’s jeans. Derek knew there was a little hole by a back pocket, but apparently it had expanded into a BIG hole, showing all the moms at the park his bright red boxers!
Kudos for the sorting! I just went through all the Christmas totes, sorting them for what to keep and what to take to my booths. What a job.

  13. HALLOWEEN PAJAMAS. Rest assured, you would have been goals if I had seen you. I also put on pajamas when I get home, which are not even pajamas, which would be kind of cool, but just really slobby clothes. I would rather go in to pay for gas in actual pajamas.

  14. LOL LOL LOL the jammies. OF COURSE you had to go in! I picked Dorothy up in my actual PJs (showered with wet ahir), and it would have been TRAGIC to have to go inside the dance studio like that!

  15. The pajama story is great! I’ve pulled up to gas stations before that have signs that you have to pay inside and I will just go drive to another station, I HATE going inside to pay that much haha, even wearing regular clothes.

I’m glad the cats are getting along! It makes things so much easier when everyone is comfortable around each other. Back in 2020, my parents, me, my dog, my sister and her dog were all living in the same house after my sister and her dog moved to AZ from Colorado and the dogs were not loving each other at first, but now they’re best friends!

  16. Flannel pj bottoms are totally accepted in my neck of the woods. I think high schoolers practically live in them. I’ve driven people places and then had to stop for something in my jammies and I was not the least bit worried about it. I think the Halloween pj bottoms are perfect for a fall morning. Nope. No where near ready to get Christmas stuff out. I was thinking this morning that before I drag out Christmas stuff I really want to get my house organized. Um, Gumby is still sprawled out on the living floor (not really visible from the main living spaces) in the living room corner after our early Oct tailgate. I need to roll him back up and store him in his bag.

  17. so great that you kids are getting along! ours are not and have no expectation they will.
I haven’t even thought about wrappers, first I need to have ideas for gifts. Please share if you have.

  18. It wouldn’t even have registered as a wardrobe demerit over here, Jenny. All the cool kids seem to be in their PJs a lot–esp. at the store.
(Maybe NOT their Halloween PJs, but they’d probably think that was edgy…)
What did Angie think? Did she offer to go inside and pay for you?

  19. To make you feel better, I see people roll into Starbucks at, like, 10:30 on a Saturday in their pajamas, so it’s not as unusual as you might think!

I’m ALWAYS worried I am going to run into a situation where I have to get out of the car, so it’s rare for me to wear pajamas (or worse, go bra-less) when I’m doing something where I wouldn’t need to get out of the car. Ha!

Yay for organizing the Christmas wrapping paper! I don’t wrap TOO many presents, so I usually only need to buy 2-3 tubes every year, and I try to get something fresh and new every year.

  20. HA! A classic.
I picked up the husband form a business trip at the translation and then his colleges wanted to get a drink and me to go along. I also figured I didnt need to get out of the car so I wasn’t wearing bra and some very old unflattering jeans. Sigh…

I actually stocked up on Christmas paper on Friday. I had one roll of wrapping paper left in my stash. Yeah me for using what I had but aloe yeah me for getting something new in time.
