walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Back At It

Helloooo! Welcome to the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah (thanks, ladies!) I had some good workouts this week, but my lower back woes continue. Here’s how it all played out…

Sunday

4 mile run! This run was apparently uneventful, because I can’t remember anything about it.

Monday

Labor Day! I had to work, but there was no school so I could sleep later. I did my hip stability exercises, and after work went for a 45 minute walk.

Tuesday

Today was, ahem, a senior skip day, so my daughter did not go to school. The good thing about that was, I could get out for my run earlier so I went to my favorite (but slightly farther away) trail. 10 miles, and the earlier start plus some cloud cover made it slightly easier than usual.

At night- Adriene’s yoga for lower back pain.

Wednesday

Oof. This morning I discovered a nail in my tire. LUCKILY, my daughter’s boyfriend was able to patch it! But by the time he got done, it was getting hot and I lost my motivation to run outside. I went to the gym and ran 4 miles on the treadmill. THEN…

Since I was there I did leg press! My low back is not feeling good, so leg press is replacing back squats for now.

At night… yoga for lower back pain again.

Thursday

I did an upper body strength workout at home, and in the middle of it I realized my low back feels TERRIBLE! Hey, you know what I haven’t done in a while- dead bugs!!! I pulled up Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout. That should fix my back.

At night, we had a high school football game. We won against a very competitive team, and also got a beautiful sunset.

Right at the end of halftime, which is why it looks like nothing is happening.

Friday

This might be a shocking surprise, but sitting in the bleachers did not help my back one bit! In the morning I did my hip stability exercises, and after work ran 5 miles. Yes- it was extremely hot, but I brought water in my hydration vest.

At night- Adriene’s yoga for runners. My back feels like crap.

Saturday

My daughter was re-taking her SATs, and I had to drop her off before work, so I didn’t do any workouts. The truth is, my back is having an extra-special deluxe episode. The pain is somehow going up into my mid back and down into my glutes simultaneously. Weirdly, I can run and walk, but any kind of weight lifting aggravates it. I need a trip to the chiropractor!

Sunday

On tap… running, yoga, ice, Advil. And football! First Dolphins game of the season! All will be well.

How was your week?

Do you ever go to a chiropractor for adjustments?- I do, when my back gets really bad.

Sometimes people ask me if I ever get nervous running on trails by myself. The answer is, “not usually.” But

Day of Reading

As I’ve mentioned, I made my colonoscopy prep day into a “mini-reading retreat.” It worked out GREAT. I read everything

  1. Oh I have had that kind of low back pain– HATE IT. Hope it resolves for you soon. It was 90-degrees in Peoria last weekend, and Ben and Jack and I ran together, and I HATED IT. I cannot even wait for cooler weather (but I will miss the sun).

  2. Yay on the football win and gorgeous sunset!

Ugh on the back pain. It sounds like rest and Advil are the right approach. Glad it’s not interfering with running.

    1. Yes, if it were interfering with running I would have been at the chiropractor weeks ago. For some reason if I can still run, I dont consider it a serious problem- but now I really need to do something about it.

  3. I hate your back is hurting again! I hate to say it but it sounds like it could be SI joint related. I’ve been dealing with that as well and it’s not fun. I hope you figure it out though and it gets better! Back pain and glute/ hip pain are the worst.

    1. Thanks Melodie! I think it is in my SI joint, but it’s also the muscles in my lower back. I’m going to put the ice on my SI joint- that should help.

      1. That’s what mine eventually did as well! I noticed in all of a sudden couldn’t do certain upper body moves without my back hurting. It’s so very frustrating!

  4. Wow, a senior skip day this early in the year? That is wild! We did not have any skip days when I was a senior!

I’m seeing a chiro currently for pain in my hip. I had surgery in this hip 10 years ago to repair a labral tear but it’s bugging me again. The adjustments seem to be helping, though!

    1. I remember we had a “senior ditch day” but it was almost at the end of the year. I think the teachers are a little disgruntled about a skip day this early. I guess the kids just wanted a four day weekend ; )
I know my chiropractor has helped me in the past- I just need to make the appointment and get there. I’ll try for this week!

  5. Ooh that back pain does not sound good at all! Hope you can figure out what is aggravating it. Could it be sleeping or pillow related?

    1. That’s a good guess, but I don’t think so because it usually feels better after a night’s sleep. I mean, temporarily better- once I get up and start to move around it feels bad again.

  6. Wow, that back pain sounds awful! I hope you get it under control soon! Yeah you for doing the leg press. That is definitely a benefit of skipping on the outdoor run. Hope your daughter’s SATs went well

  7. Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that your back is causing you problems and hope that you can figure out what’s causing it quickly. I saw a chiropractor a few times when my back was acting up. She really helped a lot. I hope you can get some relief when you see yours.

    That halftime sunset is gorgeous!

    1. Yes, my chiropractor has adjusted my low back in the past and it really helped. I was hoping to take care of it myself because it’s kind of a pain to get to him, but I obviously have to make it a priority.

  8. Senior skip day? I just don’t get it- school’s barely started and routines just getting started. Your school district baffles me.
I hope she did well with her SAT.
I haven’t been walking at all; if you can exercise with a sore back, I have no excuse. I’ll try harder this week.

    1. The school district baffles me as well- but I’m pretty sure this was a student-led thing and the teachers grudgingly went along with it. It is VERY early for a skip day, and my husband was grumbling about it. I told him to take it up with the president of the senior class (I mean- I have no idea who comes up with these things, actually).

  9. I’m so sorry that your back is getting worse! Maybe once you get it adjusted and it feels better, you could have someone watch your form when you are lifting weights and/or doing squats. You shouldn’t have back pain with squats if you are lifting with your glutes and hamstrings; you might be using your back more than you realize! I hope you get it sorted out.

  10. Ooh, I’m so sorry about your lower back. That must be so disturbing. I know lifting weights isn’t your favourite thing to do but you also know how important it is! Yes you should go see someone for help. I’m glad running is pain free! And good for you to have the leg press – at least you can keep your legs strong while the back is bad.

  11. Sorry about your back pain. That is so frustrating and annoying. Hopefully it resolves soon. I am not a big chiropractor fan but I have found one helpful when I was pregnant and then again postpartum and I could literally see one leg was a couple inches longer than the other. I, conversely, had a chiropractor make my back hurt way worse after “fixing it” when I was postpartum another time. Therapeutic massage is something I find MUCH more helpful usually but I’m guessing you’re well aware of the benefits of that 😉

Hope you have a wonderful week!

  12. Oh bummer on the back pain! I’ve had intermittent hip discomfort in recent months. Ironically, it feels fine when I run, but walking is another story. Yeah, go try to figure that out, LOL! I hope you get some relief from your chiro!

  13. I have found that as soon as I stop being vigilant about yoga (especially downward dogs and twists), my back gets totally messed up. *sigh* CONSTANT VIGILANCE. I wish I could say that I don’t quote Mad-Eye Moody nearly every day, but I do.

  14. Sorry about the back pain! But you still got in some good runs and workouts! Hopefully the yoga will help.

I think our senior skip day was towards the end of the year, and I don’t remember if I participated or not. Kinda crazy to have one so early in the year!

  15. I used to go to chiropractor in Jakarta but not in brasilia. it’s not a thing here and I find my physio can fix my back issues with acupunture, manual manipulation, so I didn’t look for chiropractor anymore as it always makes me wonder if it’s safe or not, especially cracking my neck.
hope you get to the bottom of things and get it fixed. back pain is super annoying.

  16. Ugh! I’m sorry about your back! I hate that for you! I’ve never been to a chiro… the cracking freaks me out (even though I know they use the table now, but still).

That is a beautiful sunset for sure!

Ahhh. senior skip day! I feel like they had one once a month. Although I’m sure it was just the kids trying to get out of school.

Not a great day for the Dolphins, but the Hurricanes did awesome.

  17. That sunset is stunning. If the game was going on, I think the sunset would’ve warranted them to stop the game to enjoy it. Bah ha ha. Can you imagine?

I do not ever go to a chiropractor. I’m married to a physical therapist. He fixes people, so they don’t need to keep having adjustments. 😉 Have you ever tried PT?

  18. Ugh well you know I have chronic back issues too which have been actually quite well controlled overall, but I actually tried RUNNING a little the other day and immediately noticed back pain (like while running)… seemed like it did not like the jarring! And then I went to a soccer game and sat in bleachers for 90+ minutes and it did not like that either. Boo. I am so happy overall my back has been pretty good, but it’s annoying that it’s never *actually* totally gone. Oh, and then I went and walked around a golf course to watch Asher in a tournament yesterday – like the slow walking with a lot of just standing…- and my back hated that too! Good idea to use the leg press. I don’t find that bothers my back at all. Squats DEFINITELY do.

Also, yay for football season! How fun to go to all the high school games. We never do but I feel like maybe I should go to the east vs west rivalry here in town which is coming up…. Granted I don’t have a kid in the band OR on the team, lol!
