Hey you guys- I had a pretty great week with back-to-back long runs, and I can say THE HAY IS IN THE BARN! My race is two weeks away, so all my long runs are done. Now all I have to do is keep myself in shape and in one piece until March 21st. Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown. Let’s get into it!
Monday
I started the day with Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout, followed by a 4 mile run. Later in the day- hip stability exercises.

Tuesday
Hmm. I did another Caroline Girvan abs workout. That was good, and I had an upper body strength workout planned, which for various reasons did not happen (I would live to regret this!)
Wednesday
Last long trail run! This will be my last time on the trail for a while. By the time my race is over, it will be almost summer, and this trail is awful in the summer (way overgrown and buggy). There were some highs and lows, but overall I felt good. The heat bothered me at the end (it got up to 83 degrees) but my race will most likely be hot, so I just sucked it up. I finished with 26 miles!

At night I did Adriene’s yoga for lower back pain. i really love the stretch for the hip flexors in this video!
Thursday
In the morning I did Adriene’s morning hip release. Then I went to work, and after work it was straight to the gym for long run #2. I got on the treadmill, and after surviving the first few moments of bitter complaining from my legs and low back (“WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? WE DON’T WANT TO DO THIS! STOP RIGHT NOW!!!”) I actually started to feel pretty good. SO good, in fact, that when I got to my goal of 10 miles I didn’t want to stop. So I added on one more mile to make it 11, and I still felt like I could have kept going, but decided better safe than sorry, and called it a day. Total running for the two days=37 miles.

Friday
I was thinking of doing a much-needed upper body strength workout, but my Garmin kept insisting that my stress levels were higher than normal. Oh, very well- I’ll do yoga instead! I did Adriene’s yoga for tired legs, and really enjoyed it- it was just what I needed.
Saturday
I opted to sleep in, then after work got out for a 4 mile run.

Once again, I had an upper body workout planned, and once again it didn’t happen.
Sunday
I’m super happy with all the running this week! However, I did almost no strength training. Oops. On tap for today- hip stability and upper body workout. Seriously- I have to do it!!!
Are you happy about the time change? – I’ll spend the whole day grumbling about it. I hate the dark mornings!
Are you getting excited for spring? – No. Not ready for the hot weather yet!!!

Wow- great runs!
I do not like the time change- I prefer standard time. I am a morning person, so early light preferred! And spring is here in illinois- we had two days of thunderstorms, one cold and eindy, and today’s supposed to be nice and sunny. Love the variety! We needed the rain anyhow- aa very dry winter in this area.
Have fun with your prep for the bog birthday rum!
Thank you! I also prefer more light in the mornings, so I’m already looking forward to falling back again. Oh well…
Glad you’re having some nice weather!
Well done Jenny, that is an awesome block of training in the bag. We don’t change time until the start of April and we will be going the other way, although I don’t mind it being darker in the morning.
I think the start of April would be a better time to spring ahead (if we have to do it.) I DO mind it being darker in the morning, but somehow I’ll survive (as I always do!)
Way to go on back to back long runs! And it’s great you felt good enough to run longer on Thursday! And all the gold stars for a double digit run on the treadmill!
I hate the time change. But I also hate falling back. This is so silly. But at least with the spring time change we don’t have to manipulate the boys’ bedtimes. They will have some sleepy days ahead but will bounce back quickly. I am going to a 7:30 class this am and am shocked that I woke up without my alarm at 6:30/feels like 5:30 feeling rested!
Well that’s good- you adjusted to the time change immediately. I agree it’s easier to spring forward with little kids. I’m just mad about the dark mornings- it was so nice having some daylight! Sigh.
Let’s just say I did not “spring” forward this morning. I had to drag myself out of bed at 7!
The hay IS in the barn and you’ve got this! Honestly, I’d keep my strength workouts light for the next two weeks too, but keep up with the mobility work. But whatever — you’ve got this!
Yes, I’ll keep the strength workouts light- but I do have to do them! I can’t just stop for two weeks. Oh, and I dragged myself out of bed at 8:30, lol.
I’m excited to see grass. But still lots of snow around.
I have one week until a half and another a week after.
So we’ll be running in the same day. Right now our forecast is cold and rainy.
Can’t wait to hear how well you do.
I haven’t been running in the morning so I’m excited about more daylight after work.
I know, our races are the same day. The forecast for Asheville is cold and rainy? It seems like it should be warmer than that! It will aomost definitely be hot here on March 21st, which I’m not looking forward to.
I think I would be more excited about springing ahead if I didn’t live in Florida! Or, more excited about spring in general.
That barn is full of hay! Now you just have to get through the Drama phase (aka the taper) when everything is going to feel wrong.
I’m excited for spring because I’m in a different climate, so for me it means the end of snow and ice for a while. I sure did enjoy breaking up the monotony of winter by coming down south for a bit each month. I don’t want the dark mornings either, but I’ll take them as a bump in the road toward longer days.
Ha ha yes, I wonder what body part will decide to break this time? Or more accurately, which body part will my brain try to convince me is broken.
If I lived up north I would be thrilled right now. So… I’m happy for you guys! We’re in for a loooooong hot summer here.
You know I love a barn! Whoo hoo!
I dont’ mind the darker mornings… at least I can get my whole run in before the sun comes up. It takes a few days to adjust, but we already had a lovely beach walk this morning, so I’m motivated.
How funny. No strength at the gym for you, but I went twice!
Yes that’s true- I skipped the gym this week but you made up for it (what? It doesn’t work like that? Oh…)
Another reason I’m glad I live in AZ – no time change! Though our sunrises are noticeably earlier now, I’m seeing them as I’m driving to the trails and not while I’m running, which makes me a little sad as I enjoy getting to see the sunrise during my run and in a couple months, the sun will be rising in the 5 am hour and I am NOT running that early! I do enjoy more daylight hours though.
You are definitely ready for your big race! I didn’t do a B2B long run but I did turn my planned 16 miler yesterday into 19 miles and got an unexpected 30K PR so I’m pretty happy with that. It was likely the last cooler long run until next fall/winter though, as it was only in the mid 60s, and 80s are back next weekend.
Yep, our heat is back as well. After a cooler than normal winter, I heard that we’re going to be warmer than normal this month (arrrrg!)
I’m trying to imagine what it would be like to not switch the clocks. I don’t think I would like a 5 am sunrise in the summer. Obviously I’m just going to complain no matter what, so I might as well just accept the time change here.
You had a great week! So impressive.
Today is lower body (leg strength) for me, which is my least favorite. I like upper body much more. I dislike the time change, but I went to bed super early last night (9pm, which was more like 10pm with the time change) and woke up at 8am, so a great 10 hours. One night last week I woke up at 2am and couldn’t get back to sleep, so it’s really nice to get a great night of sleep once in awhile.
Spring – I like spring because everything is green here, and the flowers are blooming, all of that. I dread it getting hot though. Bah! It’s not humid like where you are, and we get cool days from San Francisco fog seeping over the hills, but man, I hate when it gets above 90.
Yes- temps above 90 are super uncomfortable. That’s kind of where we hover for the entire summer, with high humidity thrown in (yuck).
I’m envious of your 10 hours of sleep! I have to get myself into bed earlier.
The hay IS in the barn! Things are getting so real! I’m not a fan of time changes. The dogs are off, my kid is off, the clock in my car is off haha! We even have some of the “heat” up here with temps looking to be in the 50*s and 60*s this week; I sure hope that gets rid of the rest of this snow so the puppy can run in the yard again! PS: at least you had the intention to strength train?
Hahaha… well I don’t think good intentions count for much. And, I really shouldn’t complain about the time change because I don’t have little kids anymore. And the cats are thrilled to see us an hour earlier in the mornings!
Oh wow, you seem to be in such great form!! There will be time for strength training after your race.
Your trail looks so nice but I can imagine it gets buggy and unpleasant in the summer. I miss trails so much at this time of the year. It’s likely way too muddy and wet on our trails right now, especially after this ultra-rainy winter. But I’m super excited for spring and absolutely can’t wait!
I would be excited for spring if I were you! For us, summer is the time when it’s hard to be outside, and that gets depressing.
I definitely plan to focus on strength training for a nice block of time after my race. I’ve really been doing the bare minimum lately, and I know I need more.
What a great productive week. you got this! Love the trail pics. I had a hard time getting up this morning – my daughter was up in the middle of the night sick, and then my youngest got up at 6:30 (or 7:30 with the new time). Oof! I at least got in a long run to wake me up. I know the next few days will be rough with the time change, but I’m ready for spring to be here!
Ouch- I would be tired if I were you! I hope your daughter is okay.
Yes, after we get adjusted to the time change all will be well- we’ll have daylight in the mornings again soon.
Great work on this training cycle! I’m so impressed with your mileage. I wouldn’t sweat it about missing the strength workouts-you’ll be just fine without them this week.
I don’t like the time change–it’s finally light out in the morning, and now it’s dark again….
I KNOW. WHY do we want dark mornings??? Who decided all this, anyway? Obviously someone who doesn’t have to get up early.
Woohoo! This was a solid week with impressive running. You are so ready for your race! I bet that feels great. Now bubble wrap yourself and don’t do anything crazy.
Haha… the bubble wrap is on. No craziness allowed.
Wow great job on your long run! Looks like you are in a fab place for your big race. Rough wake up for use this morning with an early flight
Oh, ouch- an early flight on the start of DST! That’s a rough way to start. But, soon you will be skiing in a beautiful location and all will be well!
I forgot to adjust the time on my alarm (an old school clock radio, LOL), but actually woke up almost a hour “early.” I didn’t realize the forgotten time change until I checked my phone and saw the spring-ahead time. It’s good thing I’m an early riser! I’m not a fan of the darker mornings, but they won’t last long! The extended daylight after work will be fabulous, though 😉
Ha, yes you are lucky you’re an early riser! Nowadays just about everyone wakes up with an alarm that adjusts itself for the time change, like my Garmin.
Whoo-hoo! I was somehow not familiar with ‘the hay is in the barn’ as an expression, but it really says it all.
It is just this week feeling like winter will not last forever, thank all the gods. I haven’t done the dead bug workout since I was in the ER, I have just been stretching and doing gentle yoga, but I think I might give it a go this week.
Yes, there are signs of spring- which is a good thing up north, not so much in Florida.
Happy bugging!
Way to go, Jenny! 37 miles over two days and feeling like you could have kept going on the second runs sounds like a good sign!
To answer your questions: I am thrilled about the time change (I don’t mind the dark morning at all and LOVE that it’s light longer in the evening) and I’m super excited for spring after the winter we’ve had.
Grr. These dark mornings are putting me in a bad mood! But… it won’t last forever. The days are getting longer.
UGH. HATE THE TIME CHANGE. Hate running in the dark.
Yep it sucks!!! Whose idea was this anyway???
