When Jenn asked me to cohost the Tuesday Topic linkup, I’m pretty sure she thought I would stick to the topics a LITTLE better, or at least keep the posts fitness-related. So I’ll start by answering this week’s topic prompt (before I go wildly off-topic): What are you most thankful for in your fitness life or journey?
I’m thankful for a lot of things, but most thankful that I’m able to do what I love. I know a lot of people who- through no fault of their own- are not able to move their bodies as they would like. People who have been in accidents, or have a chronic illness, who can’t get out and go for a run or walk. I don’t take my good health for granted!
Guess what else I’m thankful for? My relationship with my daughter. It has really improved lately, and it’s all because I changed my attitude. I realized I was pushing back on things that I really didn’t need to push on. One example is the school dress code.
Angie frequently leaves for school in outfits that don’t comply with the dress code. For a while, I felt like it was my parental duty to argue with her about this. Then I realized- the school isn’t contacting me, or asking me to do anything. This is between her and the school administration. Most days, she gets away with her outfit. If they don’t care, why should I? A couple times she had to go to the lost and found to “borrow” a sweatshirt to wear over her skimpy top. Again- this is all on her.
I’ve been noticing lately that there are a lot of things I feel like I’m supposed to care about- but when I really think about it, I don’t actually care. There are so many things that just aren’t worth arguing about.
Now that we argue less, I’ve been able to enjoy my time with Angie, and I realize I’ll really miss her when she goes to college next year. This makes me sad, but it would be even sadder if she left home, and I was only able to appreciate our time together in retrospect. I’m well aware that these are, in fact, the good old days.
It makes me laugh to think that I once pushed back hard on the piercings (septum- ugh, but what does it really matter?) and hair color. Why was it important to me that my daughter look “normal?” Now it seems incredibly silly.
Oh! The new hair color? As a reminder, here was the OLD color…

And now… voila!

She wanted something dramatic and different, but now she feels like this is too “boring.” I see some purple or pink highlights coming in the near future!
