Ah, it feels good to be home! As much fun as vacations are, it always feels good to sleep in your own bed, right? While we were in Austin I couldn’t figure out how the bed was so uncomfortable at night, yet when I lay down for an afternoon nap I would sink blissfully into the soft mattress, and could have slept for hours on end. A mystery! Anyway, here’s a few things from my week so far…
I can’t say I exactly missed it while I was away, but it felt good to do a pool run this morning! I listened to this Running Rogue podcast episode, “The Do’s and Don’t’s of Cross Training.”
It was exciting to be in Austin, where Chris McClung lives, runs, coaches, and hosts the Running Rogue podcast! Every time I saw someone running I would exclaim “Maybe it’s Chris McClung!” Strangely, my kids did not find this amusing, interesting or even tolerable. It turns out (as Chris explains in this episode) that he’s been sick with Covid, in spite of being vaccinated. His case is mild, and he credits the vaccine for that and urges anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated to do so. Hmm, so that’s why I didn’t see him out running!
Hellah Sidibe on the Rich Roll podcast
Ahhhhh! This episode was so good! Hellah Sidibe talks about his recent run across the country and FOUR YEAR RUN STREAK. Yes! On the day the podcast was recorded, he was on day 1500 of his streak- and every one of those runs was done outside. Just the logistics of that alone is mind boggling- what if you get sick, or there’s a blizzard? He even traveled to Australia and worked his flights out so that he didn’t miss a day of his streak. Best of all, he seems like the nicest, most fun person in the world. And I love that his YouTube channel is called “HellahGood.”
One incredible place we ate while in Austin was Rebel Cheese, a plant-based deli and restaurant where they make all sorts of absolutely delicious vegan cheeses. We ate brunch there on our last day, and bought four different cheeses, fancy mustard, and jam to bring home with us. Today we had this vegan charcuterie board to chase away the post-vacation blues. So good… the vegan cheeses we got were brie, smoked cheddar, pepper jack, and ash chevre. What a huge treat!
For you streakers, what’s the longest you’ve done? I’ve never done a run streak but I might someday-I like the thought of it! I don’t think I’ll aim for four years though.
Are you worried about getting Covid even after getting the vaccine? – I’m so fatigued from worrying about everything over the past year and a half that I’ve given up- I’ve stopped being concerned.

That charcuterie board, Jenny!!! It looks amazing.
When I used to be vegan we bought those plant-based cheeses as well. They were good! Here in Switzerland, they were expensive, though – more than real cheese. How were the prices in Austin?
A four-year streak is mind-boggling! I admire everyone who can do that, it takes a lot of organizing and discipline (not my strengths…)
Yes, I agree- on top of the physical part of it, just the logistics of scheduling would be mind-boggling. I will say that I don’t think he has a 9-5 job though- I think right now he’s making a living through sponsorship and his YouTube channel- that probably helps.
Oh, the vegan cheese was expensive in Austin! We loved it, but it’s probably a good thing we don’t live there.
Agree, I am DONE with worrying about COVID until such time as there is a reason to worry. From what I’m hearing COVID would most likely be a mild illness for us since we’re all vaccinated.
I enjoy reading about run streaks but I don’t think I would ever do one. I feel like I benefit from my rest days. I don’t miss very many workouts, but when I do there’s a reason, such as I don’t feel well, something hurts, or sometime outside of running came up. I just don’t have anything to prove with a streak.
Welcome home!
My favorite schedule is to run six days a week, and I do like that rest day. Maybe a streak is one of those things I like to imagine but will never actually do.
No I’m tired about worrying about COVID-19. Once I got the vaccine, I felt safe.
Nope, never done a streak. I don’t want to feel like I HAVE to run. I think after awhile it would feel that way. I have a hard time fitting in 3-4 times a week.
I definitely need to branch out on my podcasts. I’ve been on an Ali on the run rut.
Ali has some GREAT guests- I like her show, but also have my other favorites. Like you, I stopped worrying once I got the vaccine. My feeling was, what’s the point of getting the vaccine if you don’t think it’s going to work?
We had to pack our masks for our vacation (driving today!) and it seems like such a drag to even put them on again, let alone have to wear them for a few minutes. I guess the national parks still require masks on shuttle buses and in shops. I haven’t even thought much at all about COVID around here since they lifted the mask mandate.
Yes, we had to wear them in the airport and on the plane- seemed so weird to have them on again.
The vegan cheeses look delicious.
I got the vaccine and, at the moment, I don’t worry.
Never done a streak, now I run every other day and when I was younger my schedule was 4 days for week running, 2 days swimming and 1 day of total rest.
Funny, I had that same run/swim schedule when I was younger! I had a lot of success with that- maybe I should go back to it. Swimming is just so inconvenient these days!
That charcuterie board looks yummy – glad you were able to find a vegan version.
That’s so weird about the bed in the hotel room being comfy for naps, but not at night. I agree, no matter how much fun you have on vacation, it’s always good to be home!
I think that’s one of the great things about vacations- you appreciate your home even more when it’s over!
