Whew. What a week! The car saga finally ended, I made a pretty big change in my workouts, and oh yes… there was a storm! Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the weekly rundown… let’s get right into it.
Sunday
Sunday seems like seven weeks ago instead of seven days. It was a low-key day, and I did Marcia’s Cardio Barre Workout.
Monday
Big day! In the morning I did a 3 mile run and a core class on Peloton.
Then in the afternoon…
WE GOT MY CAR BACK. They guy did such a beautiful job, even had it detailed, and kept within his original estimate (when does that ever happen???) We were so happy, we forgave him for taking four weeks to fix it.
Tuesday
I decided to mix things up and, instead of doing a Peloton workout, I did Day 1 of Caroline Girvan’s Iron Series on Youtube. This was a lower body dumbbell workout and it was HARD.
And then… happy, happy day! I drove off to work in my own car, and my husband drove to work IN HIS CAR instead of riding his bike! Good thing, because it rained all day. We knew there was a major storm coming, and when I checked the weather I saw this:
We’re on the southeast coast of Florida, below the cone of danger in this model. But you never know with a hurricane- it can change course at the last minute. Either way, we were expecting heavy rains and winds. Knowing that my Wednesday run wasn’t going to happen, I got out for a quick 3 mile run after work.
Wednesday
I feel really bad saying this, but while the west coast of Florida was being pummeled by Ian, we enjoyed a cozy day at home. School was canceled and both my husband’s and my work was closed (although it was my day off anyway.) We slept late on this windy, rainy day, made waffles, and watched the hurricane coverage on TV.
We’ve been through many hurricanes- had trees come down, lost our power, screened porched ripped apart, tiles blown off the roof… but this time we were the lucky ones. Since Ian made landfall on the west coast, our area was affected minimally. Even in our worst hurricanes we’ve never experienced devastation like we’re seeing from Ian. The scenes from Ft. Myers are terrible! I can’t imagine how long it’s going to take to rebuild the area- those poor people.
Workout-wise, in the afternoon I did Day #2 of Caroline Girvan, which was upper body, and another killer.
Thursday
School was canceled again, but all we had was a nice, breezy day. I got out early for a 4 mile run.
Friday
It was with great trepidation that I approached Day #3 of Caroline Girvan, because I knew how hard the first two were, and also I had previewed this the night before. It was a glutes workout, and…. OUCH. It was so hard, I thought I wasn’t going to make it through the finisher. But I did, barely.
I’ve decided to continue on with Caroline’s Iron Series. It’s 30 workouts, and I think you’re supposed to do five a week. But my goal is to do three a week, and run four times. In light of this decision, I decided to quit Peloton. I explained my reasoning in the last post, but basically I was just doing the same strength classes over and over again, and I needed a change of pace. I’ll definitely write more about the Caroline Girvan program as I go on with it!
Saturday
I got out early for a 5 mile run, and it felt AMAZING! Once again I don’t mean to sound too cheerful, but the aftermath of Ian brought slightly cooler weather. (This is definitely a bonus for all the people over on the west coast who have no power and therefore, no AC- at least it isn’t sweltering.) It wasn’t cold- but 70 felt pretty good. I know we still have hot weather ahead of us, but it was a hint of fall. There’s hope!
Sunday
On tap for today… Day #4 of Caroline Girvan, which is a full body strength workout.
So it was a week! I didn’t do a long run, but was happy with the runs I did. And I was really happy with the strength workouts- I felt like I pushed myself more than usual. And… it’s October- time to put up the Halloween decorations!
Is your area being affected by Ian?
Who else has done Caroline Girvan workouts?
Do you decorate for Halloween?

So glad to read that you all are ok down there. Things really do look awful in parts of the state. Never hurts to mix things up workout wise. Let us know how that new program goes. I guess we can still be friends if you ditch Peloton-Denis will miss you. Have a great week ahead
I’m sure Denis misses me terribly!!! But he’s been missing me for a while now, since I haven’t been doing yoga. Honestly if I were still doing yoga I probably would have kept Peloton- I really like Denis’s classes. Hopefully I can get back to it at some point.
I’m so glad you were spared from Ian! I have many friends who’ve moved down there and I can’t imagine what they are going through right now. Enjoy your more temperate weather!
Ugh, if your friends are in the Ft. Myers area they are not having a lot of fun right now! Even if their homes weren’t destroyed, they’re probably without power, which is unpleasant.
Overall it sounds like you had a decent week! Ian avoided your area, and you had some great workouts! And, your runs went well! Oh, and the car 🙂 I’m eager to hear more about your new workout program…nothing wrong with venturing down a new path 🙂
I’ll write more about the program when I get further into it. Just like with everything else, there will be some pros and cons, I’m sure.
You are allowed to be happy, even when others are suffering — as long as you’re aware of the suffering, of course, which you are. Unfortunately there’s nothing you could have done to change their circumstances.
Sounds like you actually had a great week and you were long overdue for one, so yes, I am happy for you!
Thanks Judy! I still feel a little bad, but you’re right- there’s nothing I could have done to change what happened.
It’s great to hear you did not sustain damage from Ian. A friend of mine bought a water-front home in Ft Meyers about a year ago and it’s essentially gone. So sad for those that were affected. My older daughter is still in Miami enjoying perfect weather. It’s nuts. Glad you’re enjoying CG! Hooray for having your car back too!
Yes… every once in a while we think “wouldn’t it be great to live right by the beach?” NO, IT WOULDN’T! And yes… the weather over here on the east coast had been very pleasant, post-Ian. Go figure.
We’ve got a rainy weekend from Ian, and we had some wind Friday night, but it’s died down a lot on its way north.
I’m glad you’re liking the new strength program. It’s good to mix things up!
I know Ian is still making its way up the east coast. I’m imagining it’s just a lot of rain by now.
Excellent! I’m glad that you were spared from the hurricane. Have fun with Caroline! I’m headed into the last week of Iron.
I want to hear your final thoughts when you’re done. And what are you planning on doing next?
Yay for getting your car back and loving the workmanship! Good for you for getting those runs in when you could. We had lots of rain back home over the weekend, but we’re in Maine and the remnants of Ian stayed south of us.
Our son and d-i-l (and Pablo) evacuated to Charlotte, NC and returned home to the Tampa area yesterday. Luckily, their house was just fine. Their wedding was last November in Fort Myers and while watching the hurricane coverage on TV we saw several of the restaurants we visited then with water half way up their doors now. We drove to Fort Myers Beach while there and couldn’t believe the damage we saw on TV.
Yes, originally Ian was supposed to hit Tampa but it sounds like they were spared, which is good for your son and DIL. It must be weird to see places you know in Ft. Myers on the news, being flooded by the storm.
So glad that you were safe from the storm. And hooray for the car saga to be over!
Oh yes… I can’t even describe how nice it is to have my car again!!!
I don’t decorate for Halloween, aside from a single set of mini lights that I have Halloween (pumpkin) covers for; we do eventually usually carve a pumpkin. How lame, I know! I love Christmas decorations, but am not a big fan of storing things…so I just haven’t gotten in the habit of decorating for any other holiday outside of Christmas.
Congrats on the great runs. Ouch – the strength training sounds intense and difficult, but profitable!
Ha, it’s funny you mentioned storage because we definitely have storage issues. Houses in Florida don’t have basements, and we also don’t have a usable attic. As I was taking out the Halloween decorations today I was struggling to put other things away and I thought “We have too much stuff!” When you consider I also have a box for Easter and a box for July 4th… my holiday decorations are definitely taking up a lot of space.
I’m so glad you were safe from Ian. And this new strength program sounds intense, I’ll have to check it out! Post-Amsterdam, I could use a new kick in the butt.
Yes, definitely save it for post-Amsterdam!
I wondered if you would be affected by the hurricane! How devastating Ian and Fiona have been! I can hardly imagine.
Yes, and hurricane season isn’t over! We have to make it through another month… fingers crossed.
Good for you for trying out Caroline’s workouts! I did one of the leg workouts and couldn’t run for days because my legs were so sore! LOL In light of that, I usually just search for her videos that are 20 mins or less. I have tried a few of the “series” and I thought it was too repetitive. I find it really hard to keep motivated and on track when the exercises are repetitive. My favorites are the arms that have “no repeats” in the descriptions. I also really like the holiday ones she put out for the holidays (they have bows on the pictures!). It’s also fun to see her outfits. The outfits have really changed a lot since the early days! And… I really like the ways she has the timers on the videos (the countdown and previews are really good!).
That’s scary that you’ve had hurricanes in your area! We had a tornado hit a town close to us many years ago. It was horrible. A lady who worked out my kid’s daycare was killed along with her son and husband when their house was hit. The son was the same age as my son. Only her daughter survived. So so sad. It was really a freak kind of a thing because we aren’t really in an area that is likely for tornados. I’m glad you were all safe!!
Oh, Caroline has holiday videos??? Good to know!
I think tornadoes are scarier than hurricanes. You get plenty of warning for a hurricane and if you take proper precautions, you’ll be fine. Tornadoes basically come out of nowhere and can kill you. That is a very sad story about the family who was killed. That poor daughter! What an awful thing.
I’m glad the hurricane avoided you and that you’re out of the danger zone.
We decorated for Halloween last night! We put orange and purple rope lights around the four pillars on our front porch. We put up a lighted spiderweb on our front picture window, some spooky orange candles in two of our windows upstairs, and a hand-stitched owl my sister made for us that says “BOO” in our front entryway. We also have a Halloween-themed night light and I wore my Halloween scarf on Saturday. Spooky season is here!!
Ooh, I’m impressed! I put up some indoor decorations but haven’t done the outside yet. Not that I do a lot- orange and purple lights in the bushes and some ghosts and skulls in the palm trees. I’ll get them up this week!
I am so happy that you’re part of Florida was okay during the hurricane. Seeing all the images coming out of Florida was so sad and heartbreaking. Thankfully people that I know in Florida were okay – some just lost power for about a day or two, but no home damage.
So happy that you now have your car back, and it looks beautiful!
Yes, we were SO LUCKY! The scenes from the west coast are terrible.
I’m glad you’re ok. We got three days off school (but A had 4 days off because he got pinkeye), and downtown St. Augustine flooded. For us, it was just some rainy, windy days. I am heartbroken for the Gulf Coast. it’s awful.
Our kids got two days off, but last week was also Rosh Hoshona so they had Monday off as well- and then tomorrow is Yom kippur, another day off! Yes, we got a lot of wind and rain- and actually a couple tornadoes, but not too close to us (luckily!)
I am so glad you guys were not affected by Ian (I’ve seen the images from Fort Meyers though and they’re awful. So much devastation!).
