walkers walk… but runners fly

Friday Coffee Date

As you can see, I don’t ONLY drink out of my Crazy Pumpkin Lady mug in the fall. No, no, no… I have a whole collection of fall and Halloween mugs! Why are mugs so fun (is it only me???) Anyway…

Yesterday I mentioned I went to Barnes and Noble. I returned my book with the missing pages (grr) and browsed around happily. I had fun looking at the calendars. We use an old fashioned wall calendar in our kitchen every year, and while I’m not quite ready to buy a new one right now, I admired the selection. They had SIX cat calendars! And, a calendar of “Disappointing Affirmations” that made me think of Engie (Engie did not like my Kleenex boxes with the positive sayings on them).

Back of the calendar, showing each month…

I’m not going to get this calendar- I’ll probably end up with a cat one- but I especially like “You are exactly where you’re supposed to be… (because you make terrible decisions).” Hee hee!

I also had fun looking at the advent calendars! Once again, I thought of Engie…

Tiny books!

Should I get an advent calendar this year? A couple years ago I got a reading-themed advent calendar and it was really fun. And every year I get one for the cats (with little treats each day). I’m still trying to decide if I should get one for myself…

If we were having coffee together, we could talk about weekend plans! We have a high school football game tonight. The weather forecast shows rain, but that’s true for every day this month. We have learned to forge ahead optimistically, in spite of the forecast.

Saturday I’ll work all day, and it’s usually a hard day. But then I enjoy coming home and taking a nap, getting takeout, and settling down on the couch for the rest of the evening. Sunday… will be Sunday-ish. But, there’s no school on Monday because of Yom Kippur. I still have work, but I can sleep a little later and enjoy the holiday vibes vicariously.

Do you have any fun weekend plans?

Do you get an advent calendar for yourself, your kids and/or your pets? Any good recommendations for this year?

Day of Reading

As I’ve mentioned, I made my colonoscopy prep day into a “mini-reading retreat.” It worked out GREAT. I read everything

  1. Okay, Jenny, no lie, I would LOVE that calendar. It is AMAZING and everything I want in my office supplies. I’m so happy you’re wandering around the world thinking about me and disappointing affirmations!

Of course I buy myself an advent calendar every year. This year I special ordered one from the UK and I’m just waiting for it to appear like magic at my house sometime soonish! Yay! We also do our puzzle advent calendar every year. I think we’ve had it for two or three years now. It’s really a nice little quiet time at the end of the day.

    1. It was like you were right there at the bookstore with me! And- I’m very curious to find out what advent calendar you’re getting.

  2. That calendar with the disappointing affirmations is hilarious. Only, I would want one per day, not just one per month.
About those mini-books: do they have a mini-text inside? Could you actually read the book (with a magnifying glass, I suppose)? They are super-cute!

    1. True- the affirmation would get less funny as you looked at it day after day, for 30 days on end. And I’m not sure but I doubt you could read the mini books. Here’s an idea though- they should put a teeny tiny one sentence summary of the book on the inside! That would be fun.

  3. I’m all about focusing on the positives and potentials but I kind of love that calendar! It’s fun and real! It’s good to make fun of life’s misery sometimes.
I do have interesting weekend plans! My husband is going to somewhere in the middle of nowhere to play in a charity gig with some people, and I wasn’t invited so to continue on the realness road, instead of going with him to listen I’m saying no, I know I’m mediocre and don’t need to have it rubbed in even more by sitting in that audience, and btw there’s a fun guitar festival going on in our hometown so I’m going there to enjoy listening to some great bands and also enjoy some good photoshoots.

      1. They aren’t, I’m just slightly pissed off about it (even if I shouldn’t, they simply wanted a fiddle player) and try to to make myself feel better about it by enjoying myself elsewhere.

  4. That calendar is hilarious. I wouldn’t want it on my wall (I can default to the negative without any outside help!) but I really do feel like there is something out there for everyone.

I’m drinking coffee out of my new mug right now and it makes me so happy! *Happy sigh*

I don’t usually get advent calendars for myself, but I always get them for the kids. There would be a revolt if I didn’t. But we just do the standard chocolate (though two years for his birthday—late November—my son has been given LEGO Advent calendars by friends).

I GOT A MINI BOOK FROM ENGIE. ANNE OF GREEN GABLES!!!!

    1. I know! Funny that we both mentioned Engie and mini books in our posts today. Also, we used to do the Lego advent calendars when my son was younger- those were great.

  5. I’m going to see if I can find a disappointing affirmations day to day calendar. I need that for my office. I often get one with classic arts or Pearls before Swines comic.
Homecoming is tonight, so I’ll drop him off at 730 and collect him about 10 pm.. Band is a cruel mistress.

    1. Our football game has been canceled due to INCESSANT RAIN, SOB. And… I’m going to look for that day to day calendar… heh heh.

  6. That calendar is amazing!
I buy the guys Lindor calendars every year, and I bought myself an After Eight one, but I found it was not as exciting as I had hoped. So instead last year I bought myself little treats that I loved, a whole assortment of them, and then had one every day! I have a puzzle Advent calendar, which features dogs in Santa hats. I love it.
You can never have too many mugs, I say! (my husband disagrees and thinks we have reached Mug Saturation Point)

    1. My husband would also say we’ve reached MSP, but somehow I keep managing to find spaces for them! And, you made your own “advent calendar”- I love it.

  7. That calendar is great! I follow the Disappointing Affirmations account on Instagram so they post things like that all the time and it’s hilarious.

You should definitely get yourself an Advent calendar! I have one that I’ve had since I was a kid with little ornaments I hang up on a mini tree, and I always got my dog a treat one from Trader Joe’s that she loved. The mini book one is so cute!

I’m jealous you don’t have school in your district on Monday. We don’t get off for that, but it will be a short week for me anyway since my race is next weekend so I’m taking off Thursday through the following Tuesday!

    1. Trader Joes is where I usually get the cat advent calendar from. I think there was one or two years where I didn’t get there in time, and had to get an inferior product from the pet store.
Good luck on your race!!!! That’s exciting.

  8. That calendar of affirmations is funny! I made a Shutterfly calendar with photos of the boys for our family and my MIL. It’s pretty easy to do and brings us so much joy. My mom makes one with pics of all the grandkids and that goes in Paul’s room.

We have a wooden Advent calendar with little drawers. I tend to put m&ms in each drawer for the boys. Some years I put slips of paper in that say “pick a present” and they’d unwrap something from a bag of gifts. One year it was little cars, another year it was holiday themed books. We haven’t done that in awhile because we don’t need more STUFF. This year I might put together a list of fun/special things to do and have them pick from the list. We’ll see how ambitious I feel come December.

Our weekend is rather full! The boys have haircuts Sat morning and I’m hoping to sneak in a library visit before them. Then Paul has a soccer game at 11. Phil is golfing in a charity tourney that am so I’ll be managing the chaos on my own. Then we are going to this truck event at a local school where they have all kinds of trucks (firetrucks, snow plows, ambulances, police cars, etc) and the kids can crawl inside them. That night we have a bday party for a friend’s son who is turning 13. Sunday I’ll do OTF, the boys have Sunday school, and we have ANOTHER birthday party, this time for a daughter of Phil’s friend. It’s A LOT. But you know from reading my blog that it’s best to be busy…

    1. Wow. That is a lot. Even if you spread Saturday into two days, it would still feel like a lot to me. But I do remember those days with small kids- busy is good.
I’ll be wanting to hear what you come up with for the boys’ advent calendar!

  9. That calendar is inspired. I love stuff like that.

Do I need an advent calendar? I’ve never had one. As kids, we always used to make Christmas calendars–the month of December up until Christmas–so we could cross off each day and feel closer to the holiday. Now, I avoid thinking about Christmas and all the prep, planning, and whatnot, but it’s almost impossible. I already saw two different Christmas-themed commercials IN AUGUST. Why can’t they leave me alone?!

    1. Ha ha… I haven’t seen Christmas commercials yet. I mean I love the holidays but that is TOO SOON (I have seen Christmas merch in some stores- I just look the other way, for now). I love Christmas, but somehow end up feeling completely overwhelmed every December. This year I’m determined to get more done in November (which is the same thing I say every year, sigh!)

  10. I love that calendar!! It would make me smile everyday.
I’m Jewish so no on the advent calendar. And it’s too early for Christmas in the store… not even Halloween.

I’m getting my COVID and flu shots this weekend. There’s also a book sale at our library. Of course a run… maybe boating.

    1. A book sale sounds fun! The shots, not so much- but if I remember correctly you never have a reaction to them, right? I hope you can get out on the boat. It’s hard to imagine that right now because it’s been raining all day here.

  11. So, I have had the Disappointing Affirmations calendar for multiple years and it never fails to make me laugh. I don’t know if that speaks to my humor or mindset, but… We also love advent calendars and consider them earlier Christmas presents; my daughter gets a chocolates one, my Mr gets a snack mix one, and I get us all the Taskmaster game one that we play all December long. This weekend, I am meal prepping, reading, and hopefully going for a walk in the woods before the rain hits.

    1. Am I the only one who hasn’t heard of Disappointing Affirmations? Here I was thinking it was a new thing, and everyone else seems to know all about it. And, now I’m getting more and more inspired to get myself an Advent calendar.

  12. The calendar of disappointing affirmations sounds like a hoot! I don’t usually get a wall calendar but I might need to go in search of that one. I love advent calendars but stopped buying them as my kids got older…why? I don’t know – there’s such great variety. You’ve inspired me to consider starting this tradition again.

    1. There are so many great advent calendars, with tea, puzzles, jewelry, cosmetics… definitely lots of things for adults. And, apparently Disappointing Affirmations makes other products like daily calendars, sticker books, pencils and more. WHO KNEW???

  13. I vote for getting yourself an advent calendar. It’s seasonal, it’s fun, and if the cats get one then you should definitely have one.

I’m finally home after traveling kind of a lot in the past month, so the weekend is going to be mostly me catching up with adulting, lying around on the couch, and hopefully getting out and hiking with Doggo.

  14. I love that disappointing affirmation calendar! Hilarious!

I usually get some kind of advent calendar. I think it’s fun to have a countdown.

I’m working all weekend! Lots of puppy and kitty clients!

  15. I love the disappointing affirmation calendar, but I want it to be a desk calendar with a different message every day.

I had a busy week, and am hoping for a lazy weekend to do nothing. We just got home from our walk and I’m trying to motivate myself to do some strength exercises. Maybe I’ll do some shoulder presses and chest presses, those are my favorites.

  16. We also have a wall calendar in the kitchen, and I am big on Advent calendars. I have one with a mini-puzzle a day, which is fun but hard to find a surface to set up amidst the Christmas chaos. I’ll have to go to Barnes + Noble and start browsing.

  17. Ooh, this post reminded me that I need to start researching for advent calendars! Maybe that’s what I will due during football on Sunday. 🙂 I learned the hard way that you have to get them EARLY. I try to purchase an advent calendar for myself every year. I did the same reading one as you. I’ve done a beauty one but ended up with way too many products I didn’t need. Last year, I did a chocolate one but it just recycled the same chocolates every 3-4 days. (Boring.) I need to think hard about the type of advent calendar I want this year!
