walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Ice and Rain

Oh hi there! When we left off last week, I was battling a very sore low back. This week I went into a very aggressive “FIX THIS PROBLEM NOW” mode. My method: move as much as possible in ways that don’t cause pain, and avoid all activities that hurt. Luckily, I could still run and walk and I did one or the other every day. I avoided all lower body strength workouts, and also, sadly, yoga (just to be on the safe side). Let’s just see how it all worked out! Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown.

Sunday

4 mile run! My back felt fine while I was running.

The rest of the day was taken up with grocery shopping, food prep, football watching, and napping, obviously.

Monday

My low back feels much better! Unfortunately the issue has moved firmly and painfully into my SI joint. I did an upper body strength workout, carefully designed so that I could do everything either sitting or lying down, in order to take as much stress off my back as possible. I also did Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout.

Later in the day I got out for a 30 minute walk, and I iced my SI joint several times over the course of the day.

Tuesday

10 mile long run! It was on the more boring trails in a nearby park. This was a difficult run- I forgot my salt pills and my stomach felt awful. The one positive thing was, my SI joint didn’t hurt at all. I don’t even know how that’s possible, because everything else I do hurts it. The running gods are smiling on me!

Thank you, running gods!

For the rest of the day- more icing that SI joint.

Wednesday

In the morning- Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout. Later in the day, a 45 minute walk. Again, icing the SI joint whenever possible.

Thursday

Hey, guess what- it feels a little better! After work I ran 5 miles on the treadmill, with some speedwork thrown in.

More ice.

Friday

Another upper body strength workout, again doing everything sitting or lying down. And, Caroline Girvan deadbugs.

We were supposed to have a high school football game, but it rained all day and the game was canceled. Sob! My daughter and I went to the gym and I walked for 45 minutes on the treadmill.

Very sad to miss that football game.

Saturday

5 mile run before work!

Then it was a long day at work, At night- takeout! Football! Reading! All my favorite things.

Sunday

On tap for today- running.

So, my plan is working! I would say my back/SI joint is at least 50% better. I’m confident that if I continue on this track, the whole thing will be resolved soon.

How was your week? Did you have any weather snafus? Are you battling any injuries?

Day of Reading

As I’ve mentioned, I made my colonoscopy prep day into a “mini-reading retreat.” It worked out GREAT. I read everything

  1. that’s great news although also strange, no? I am glad your plan is working out so far.
I’m looking forward to the steam room today after some easy swim. the water feels good on sore muscles.

    1. It is strange, because the last time I had an SI joint issue I couldn’t run at all. This time I think it was caused by strength training, and it definitely helped to avoid it.

  2. C’mon weather! It had all week to rain and it had to pick game time? Boo!

I’ve got my fingers crossed for your SI joint to do the final 50% and get 1005 better.

  3. I’m sorry to hear about your SI joint! Adriene has a yoga for pelvic health workout if you’re interested; just saying. Glad you were able to run without pain. And rain, you say? We need an ark right now…

    1. Yes, I have heard about your rain! And, maybe this week I’ll try Adriene’s workout. I was avoiding yoga this week, but I think I may be ready again.

  4. Sorry your back is bothering you so much. Sounds like you are managing it well and hope you continue to improve. Way to work around it and get it done this week

  5. Wait…no yoga? Yoga is the cure all for me when my back hurts. I feel like the deadbugs would make everything worse for me! It’s crazy how different bodies are.

    1. Yes, I’ve been doing yoga faithfully and I think it helps my low back. But the SI think seemed like a new and different issue, and I was just trying to keep things stable down there. The deadbugs definitely helped- but I want to get back to yoga as well.

  6. I’m impressed that you can do deadbugs when you have lower back pain. They are great for core fitness, but they make my lower back hurt.

I’m glad you’re mostly better and sorry that it rained so much! Come to California. It’s dry dry dry, which means also not humid. Of course, everything is all dried out, so there’s that to consider.

    1. Deadbugs always help my back! I need to keep doing them regularly.
No humidity sounds really good. It’s rainy and steamy here. Definitely not dried out!

  7. I hope your back continues to feel better. That is such a difficult area to navigate “around” when there’s even the slightest bit of discomfort. AS for the weather….UGH! Too. Much. Rain. ‘Nuff said!

  8. That’s great news that your SI joint and back in general are feeling better. It sounds like you’re on the right track in getting it back to 100%. Enjoy your day of watching football! Will the high school game be rescheduled?

    1. They did reschedule it, but it was on Saturday morning- the band didn’t go and I had to work. But! We have another game this week… fingers crossed.

  9. I’m glad it doesn’t hurt to run! Hopefully your SI improves and everything else stops hurting.

We got a lot of rain for here earlier this week, and it’s just rained a lot this whole summer, so some of the trails I run are now very overgrown because of it, and harder to navigate! I’ve had to find some alternatives where I can still see the trail. I’m also worried about not being able to see a rattlesnake on the trail because of all the plant life haha! But I’ve never seen the desert so lush before!

    1. Oh, I wonder what my trail will be like- I’m planning on going to my favorite trail on Tuesday. It’s hard when it’s overgrown because I can’t see what I’m stepping on and I’m afraid I’m going to trip. But at least I don’t have to worry about rattlesnakes, YIKES.

  10. Oh, I’m so glad you’re feeling better! That’s great news.
The weather has been all over the place here with a lot of rain, and yesterday it was suddenly like summer again. I don’t mind!

  11. It rained here on Friday but we badly needed it! It drizzled on Saturday, too, so Paul’s soccer game was canceled since the fields were flooded. Phil was still able to golf on Saturday morning as planned, though. He left early so I had to go a CG workout instead of going to OTF.

Gosh it’s always something isn’t it? One thing hurts, and then it moves to another place. What in the world!

    1. Yes I know!!! The good news is, the pain seems to move so it’s not like everything hurts at the same time.
The thing I hate about the rain is when plans have to be canceled. Our homecoming game is this this week, and we have a history of having that game rained out- so fingers crossed.

    1. That’s a great question- I blame the strength training I was doing, but I’m still not sure why it happened.
I guess your boating got rained out today??? Is it raining EVERYWHERE?

  12. Boo on the sore back! Do you need a new mattress maybe? I’m so glad we upgrade the mattress in our camper because I used to get a sore back every time we camped. Our new one is so comfortable and I’ve had zero back pain with it!
That’s a bummer the football game got rained out. Hopefully the homecoming game will have perfect weather! It’s probably due for it this year, right??

  13. Oh no, back pain is awful… but it’s true that it’s good to move around and not “be still” for too long with back pain, so I am happy to hear you were able to run and otherwise pretty much “work around it”.

Uh, and then you got rain. September here in Northern California is very pleasant, sunny, not humid, a little cooler and so far no rain.

  14. I was like “ICE???” What do you mean? It’s still so hot! I’m so sorry you’re having to ice an injury! That stinks!
And the rain has been pretty wild. Also, the lightning. Not cool.

Every time I read your post, I think “I wonder how our HS football team is doing,” and then promptly forget. I have to figure that out!

  15. We have had some persistent rain and it’s pleasant but only for a LIMITED time. I do not need day in and day out of rain and grey skies and blah. I’m glad that your SI joint decided to cooperate??? Bodies are weird! And wonderful, I hasten to add.

  16. Oof the back issue- here’s hoping it continues to improve. My low back hurt so much in the middle of the night when I tried to get up to pee, that I could not get out of bed. I sorta half fell/stumbled and my back felt fine this morning – weird.

It rained all day Saturday in chicago while coach and I were in Omaha. More water in the basement, womp womp. Coach is in (heated) conversation with the roofers who he thinks messed up the gutters. Grrr
