walkers walk… but runners fly

New Day, New Shoes!

Happy Wednesday!  It’s been quite a week around here so far.  As the saying goes, “You’re only ever as happy as your unhappiest child.”  On Monday both my kids were sad- for unrelated reasons- and even my cat wasn’t feeling well (cats definitely count as children!) I felt that I deserved some serious retail therapy on Tuesday.  But first, this happened…

An early morning pool run!  Last week I ran a few more miles than planned, so I decided to give my legs (and foot) a little break.  We have a pool (it’s a Florida thing) but it’s too expensive to heat, so this is the first time I’ve been in it this year.  I have a flotation device and “run” in the deep end.  It’s really not so bad… every once in a while.

And then… a trip to “Disneyland,” aka the running shoe store!

Ahhhhh… I feel better already!

I’ve only found a few shoes that I like, because I need so much room in the toebox- I practically need clown shoes.  I tried on a few pairs just for fun, but in the end bought the same shoes I already own- the New Balance 880s.  Extra-wide!

While I was there I tried On shoes.  (ha ha… that was a weird sentence.  I don’t mean “I tried on shoes” but I tried “ON” shoes.) They were comfortable, but kind of odd feeling.  I don’t think I’d like them for running, but they’re so cute!  Since I now wear running shoes all the time, I’m contemplating splurging on a pair of On just for everyday use.

And then some treats!!!

They had my favorite gel ever, the Hammer espresso flavor.  I’ve never had a gel not agree with me, but Hammer is my favorite, and the espresso is delicious with a nice shot of caffeine.  My husband likes the Gu’s better, and then I also just had to try a new flavor.  Cola Gu?  Bring it on!

I also got some Nuun.  I used Nuun all the time last summer, but recently my husband bought LMNT.  It seems like it’s on everyone’s podcast these days, but… I don’t like it.  It’s so salty (which I guess is the point) but it made me nauseous.  So I’m happy to have my Nuun back!

Nope.

Today is a new day!  The tides have turned (as they always do) and everyone feels much better, including the cat.  I love that first run in new shoes.  Life is good.

Anyone run in Ons?  How about LMNT?  Anyone tried it and liked it?

    1. Thank you Deborah! Yes, pool running is pretty appealing in the summer! I just don’t like it when I HAVE to do it, like i’ve had injuries where I was confined to pool running- that gets really old.

  1. Hooray for new shoes. I need a wide toe box. All the cute shoes don’t work.

I love gels too. That reminds me I need to get more for my upcoming half.

    1. Yep, if the nighttime temperatures dip down into the 50s and 60s, the pool is freezing! Now is my time to use it.

  2. New shoes are a treat! I got a new pair for my birthday, and it’s been fun playing with them. I even swapped out the laces for prettier ones. I used to love Gu, but in recent years my tummy betrays me if I use it. I don’t know if the formula changed or if my tummy did, but there’s great distress about an hour after the finish line 🙁

    1. Gu’s really aren’t my favorite- they’re kind of thick and… frosting-like? But like I said, I can eat them and they don’t bother me.

  3. YAY for new shoes! I always end up buying the same pair I already have as well!

I have just used Nuun for the first time and I am very happy with it. I’ve never heard of LMNT… I’ll look out for it, just in case I like the salty taste.

Oh, and did you know that Roger Federer is a co-owner of the Swiss ON company? Now you NEED to buy the shoes. 😉

  4. I just tried LMNT with a free sample pack from the No Meat Athlete podcast, and I LOVE IT!!!! I love salty (I’m a mid-race pickle juice kinda girl), but unfortunately, it’s too pricy for me. I wanted to order some, but it was $130 per order!! Granted, you got a ton in an order, but I can’t afford to spend that much at one time for electrolytes! I wish they would make it so you could order smaller boxes.

And yay for new shoes! I think I’m getting some new ones tomorrow. My current pair have 500 miles on them, so it’s time! I’ve been running in Hoka Challengers for the past few years, and I love them. I haven’t tried ON shoes, but I’ve been curious.

    1. Well, I was thinking of trying LMNT again in the summer when I’ll really be sweating a ton, but not if it’s that expensive! I think my husband must have gotten a free sample pack or something. I’ll probably just stick to my Nuun.
My second pair of shoes is Hoka Clifton and I really like those. I’m probably due for a new pair of those as well- another trip to the running shoe store!
