walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Ups and Downs

Oh, the drama!  Anyone who has a senior in high school at this time of year knows what I mean.  It was a stressful week, but all will be resolved soon!  Meanwhile, I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Rundown.  Let’s get to it!

Monday

Day off.  I love my day off.

Tuesday

5 mile trail run.  I preceded this run with squats and deadlifts- not my preferred order, but that’s just the way my schedule works.  Weirdly, doing lower body strength before a run has been working pretty well for me.  I wouldn’t do it before speedwork or a long run, but for a shorter run like this it seems to work just fine.  Oh, on this trail run I saw another runner with a hydration pack…*foreshadowing- this would have been nice to have on my Sunday run*

Love this trail!

Wednesday

3 mile run, followed by pull-ups.  As I mentioned earlier this week, I had to get this all done early because I had a mammogram scheduled.  Luckily the mammogram (and ultrasound) showed that everything is fine, so I can forget about my breasts completely for another year- er, I MEAN I can start doing monthly self-exams.  Yes, that’s what I meant.

Thursday

Day off of running.  I did some bodyweight lower body strength and the “ten down” pushup workout.  I mentioned this on my birthday, but today I did it in a much more structured way.  First off, I did all tricep pushups.  I call them that, but my son informs me that it’s really just pushups with correct form.  None of this placing your hands wide!  That would be too easy.

You start with a set of ten and work your way down- set of nine, set of eight, etc. with one minute rest between sets.  On the last one I went extremely slowly and held the down position for a count of ten.  Well, that doesn’t sound so hard does it?

HA!

I was so sore the next day. My shoulders were sore, my arms were sore, and the muscles all around my ribs were sore.  As a matter of fact, three days later I still have some lingering soreness.  My son said “now you can do eleven down!”  What???  Can’t I just stick with ten down for now???  Sheesh.

Friday

3 mile run.  None of this grueling and ridiculous strength work- just an easy, pleasant run.

Ha ha… you can’t tell it was easy and pleasant from the look on my face, but it was!

Saturday

A 3 mile run followed by Runner’s Touch exercise..  This was also a pretty easy day, and it was a good thing considering what was coming up the next day…

Sunday

Ah, a nice ten mile trail run.  OR SO I THOUGHT.  This run was another adventure.  First off, right near the beginning I saw a deer!  Maybe that doesn’t sound too exciting, but it’s the first time I’ve seen one in this area.

Okay, not the greatest picture. But (s)he was more cooperative than my wild pig friend! At least I had time to get my phone out this time.

Then… I got lost.  I’ve had really good luck with exploring these trails and always coming out in a familiar place, and today my luck ran out.  I took a chance on a trail that, after a couple miles, became un-runnable…

Er… this can’t be right…

I had to turn around and it added several miles onto my run.  To be honest, there was a brief couple of moments where I wasn’t sure exactly where I was, and I also tripped over a root and FELL.  Luckily just had a few scrapes.  So… it was hot.  I was thirsty.  My wounds were stinging.  And I realized I was going to run about 13 miles instead of 10.  But you know what?  It was awesome!!!  Maybe I didn’t feel awesome every step of the way, and at the end I had to pull out some mental tricks to get me through it.  Here’s where having some water would have been nice!  But it was an experience, and luckily my foot held up well.

Calling the form police! What is that heel doing about to strike way in front of me???

To be clear, I had hidden a water bottle the night before around the five-mile point.  So I didn’t run with NO water- that would be crazy!  It was 81 degrees when I finished (why did it feel like 101?)  A few gulps of water at five miles didn’t quite cut it for this run.  But I survived and am hydrating happily now.

Ever inadvertently run way farther than you intended?  –I guess three miles isn’t really that much.  It could have been worse!

Hope everyone had a great week!

Oh boy- I read an intense book this week! Birchwood Pie recommended this, and I don’t know whether to thank her or demand an apology.

  1. It’s been a while since I got lost on a run or ran longer than planned. But it’s happened! These days I stay close to home. That heat sounds tough! As much as I am looking forward to warmer weather I know those hot runs are so tough.

  2. I haven’t gotten lost on a run in a while, but I have either over or underestimated the distance it would take me to get back home which is never fun, lol.

    1. Ha ha, it’s also not fun when you have a houseful of people wondering where you are! They know me well by now though.

  3. I’m glad you made it back safely That sounds like the kind of run that is stressful in the moment but fun in retrospect. I learned from Peloton that my wide-armed push-ups were not the real deal. They draw a distinction between regular push-ups with your arms positioned like the ^ of an arrow (when your at the lowest) and tricep push ups with your arms ||.

I do hope the HS drama/saga ends happily. It is such a stressful time.

    1. Yeah, when I got home my son pointed out that I ran a half-marathon. I definitely didn’t RACE a half-marathon though- my miles towards the end were pretty slow.

  4. It has been a long time since I have gotten lost on a run. I always carry water even in the winter time. I used to do a belt now a backpack which I love. I can’t do lower body strength before running I would die out there

  5. Haha, I ‘get lost’ on the trails all the time. Happily, I should add. My husband always adds on more time to the time I tell him I’ll be back. Hence the name of my blog, lol. Glad your fall didn’t hurt too badly and it sure sounds like an exciting adventure to me!

My strength coach and I were just talking about running after lifting; I always have those great runs on Fridays and I think it’s because I lifted heavy the day before. It doesn’t make sense but it really seems to work for me.

  6. Its been awhile since I’ve been lost on a run, as I know the lake paths in Minneapolis so well. But sometimes I don’t plan correctly and end up with more mileage than needed! 13 instead of 10 on a run long run is pretty significant. One gulp of water isn’t enough at all!

    Great week of running!

  7. Usually I end up walking back to my car way longer than I’d planned — either in the cold or heat, naturally. I’m glad you ultimately enjoyed that run!

Even though seeing deer isn’t that unusual here, it’s not common place & it always seems special.

Triceps pushups are NOT normal pushups. Now try it in 3 leg dog (one leg is raised, hands are in a diamond). At least for me, when I did that video I was sore for days!

  8. Umm, I don’t think I’ve even been lost on a run. Oh wow 13 miles instead of 10. Yikes! Glad it all worked out though. That is GREAT news about the mammogram and ultrasound. Do you always get both?

    1. I always get both because my breast tissue is dense so they can’t see everything from the mammogram alone. My question is, can’t I just get the ultrasound? I’m going to ask my doctor next time.

  9. I’m tired reading about your strength training.

Ugh on your trail run. I’m pretty cautious on trails. But I only walk. I would get lost. Glad you are safe.

Still cold off and on here. In the summer I loop my runs because I plant water.

    1. Yes, in the summer I usually run a big loop that passes several parks with water fountains. Last summer the parks were closed and it really messed everything up!

  10. Sounds like a little more adventure than you bargained for, but I’m glad it all ended well. It’s been many years since I’ve gotten lost on a run but I remember it vividly. We were in Pinehurst NC and I had a 13 miler on tap as part of Boston Marathon training. When I’d run 15 miles, and was still nowhere near “back” I called my hubby to come get me. Way to go on the strength training!

    1. Ha ha, that’s a good story. The problem on my run is that there was no way to call anyone to come get me where I was! However, it sounds like you were lost in an unfamiliar city- what did we do before cell phones???

  11. I always get so excited when I see a deer (or any animal!!) on the trail! And I get lost all the time! Hahaha, even on trails I’m very familiar with. It’s always an adventure! I recently got lost on a trail during a 25K race and ended up running something more like 30K. Oops. I blame the Fireball shot I took at the aid station. 😉

  12. Oh, no! I’ve never gotten lost, but I’ve miscalculated and had to go extra. whoops.

I hope everything sorts itself out. I don’t have a high schooler but I can just imagine the drama to come. Ugh.

  13. I got lost on a run once- I meant to run 5 but didn’t take the turn I needed and ended up doing the entire 8 mile loop! Oops! At least I was in a park meant for runners and bikers and there were water stations every 2 miles so I had plenty of hydration.

That push up challenge sounds tough! I can barely do 20 push ups before I want to chop my arms off haha!

    1. Are you doing 20 in a row? Because I’m not sure I could make it through that! The good thing about this workout is that you have lots of breaks.
