walkers walk… but runners fly

Reading, Watching, and Gratuitous Pumpkin Spice

Yesterday, Stephany talked about her reading habits. She tracked her reading for a week, and shared all the stats. The thing I found most interesting was that she’ll read in small increments- ten minutes, then a break, then another 10-20 minutes, then another break… and it all adds up to over an hour of reading per day.

My reading is the complete opposite! I love having a looooong time to really sink into a book. If I sat down to read for ten minutes, I’m afraid I would forget what I was doing and burn my dinner or be late for work.

As I mentioned, today I had to get new tires. I wasn’t sad about that, because I was able to walk over to a Starbucks and read for over an hour.

I got my “special” drink, the one I get if I don’t want a plain old Earl Grey. A London Fog is Earl Grey, milk (I get almond milk) and vanilla (I get one pump of the sugar-free vanilla syrup). I really enjoyed my reading time, finished my book and started a new one…

I love Sophie Hannah.

Let’s talk about TV watching. In a recent post, I mentioned that our antenna broke and we couldn’t get our local channels. Nance recommended the Mohu Leaf antenna. We got one, and it works GREAT! Thank you, Nance! Bring on the preseason football! Oh, and here’s where my husband positioned the antenna:

Um…

This is on the living room wall and one of the first things you see when you walk in our front door. When I complained, my husband seemed surprised- “Oh, you don’t want it there?” I’m pretty sure we can find a better place, but right now we’re just so happy to have our channels back, the antenna has not been moved.

Anyway! I went to Sprouts today and was delighted to see this display:

So much orange!

I bought this:

I’ll put it in my tea. Not Earl Grey- that would be gross. When I use a fancy creamer I just drink black tea.

Do you like to read for long periods or in short bursts?

Have you had any pumpkin spice yet?

  1. Oh, I can see how that shelf was like made especially for you!
Pumpkin spice as far as I understand, translates to Christmas spices over here. I save all that until December. Then I usually sprinkle a mix of cardamom, cinnamon and ground cloves on top of my coffee.

    1. I would say pumpkin spice is probably a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. MMM. I’m craving it while I’m typing that out- I think I need to start making pumpkin oatmeal for breakfast!

  2. what a treat that creamer! I wish we have it here.
I like to read an hour or so each sitting but I don’t get to do that much lately. will be on flight today so that will be my opportunity. I’m packing steamed kabocha as flight lunch together with tofu. so for me, pumpkin all year round.

    1. Okay, now you just have to sprinkle some spices on that kabocha to make it “fall-ish!” And… I love plane flights because I get to read for hours.

  3. Ooooooh I’m gonna have to go to Sprouts I guess to check out their fall offerings! It feels so early, yet by this point in the summer I’m also over it and can’t wait for fall even though we don’t get fall weather until November usually.

    1. Yep, that’s a good way of putting it. I’m over it, tired of the heat, humidity and incessant sunshine. We won’t get decent weather till November, but until then I’m going to pretend it’s fall.

  4. I read in both long periods and short bursts! I always read while I eat lunch, which is only about ten minutes or so. I always keep a book in my bag if I have an appointment or something, so I can read while I wait. But I also like to have a stretch of an hour or more just to read (usually in the afternoon or evening).

    1. That’s true- I’ll bring a book with me if I’m going somewhere I’ll have to wait. I guess it’s just in my house that I don’t read in short bursts.

  5. omg I can’t wait to go to TJs and buy ALL THE PUMPKIN THINGS for our annual Festival of Pumpkin Lunch (well, I just named it that!)! I usually try to wait until October but it sounds like things are coming out early this year so maybe we’ll aim for mid-Sept!!!!

    1. I tried to look it up, but couldn’t get an exact date for TJs pumpkin products coming out. It sounds like they should be out by mid-September. If I find out more I’ll let you know!

  6. Oh yay! I’m so glad you got the Leaf and that it works for you. We’re able to hide ours up in the attic–Rick made a hole in a closet and we threaded it up through there and tacked it onto the wall. It’s been awesome.

Like you, I prefer to cozy up someplace and dedicate huge stretches of time to Reading. Getting lost in a book is one of my purest Pleasures, and I have always read this way even since childhood. Yesterday, I lounged on the patio and did nothing but read and listen to my little pond waterfall for the afternoon.

The term Pumpkin Spice has always bemused me–why not call it Pumpkin Pie Spice? Pumpkins are not spicy in any way by themselves. BTW–have you ever tried adding spices to your coffee brew basket? I do that all the time, and I can highly recommend Penzey’s Pie Spice (far more aptly named!).

  7. We have a somewhat similar antenna, but it just sits on our tv stands. It doesn’t seem to need to be hung on a wall. So you could see if that would work for you guys? I’m glad you have tv access sorted out ahead of the start of the NFL season!

I read both in small spurts and for longer stretches. I read on my kindle and have the kindle ap on my phone. That allows me to read in little snippets if I am waiting in line or something like that.

  8. I have had pumpkin spice cold brew at Starbucks and also bought their creamer.

The only time I read for long periods in on the lake, on a train or plane… so is only an hour before bed.

  9. Hooray for a new antenna and for pumpkin spice! I’m not a huge pumpkin spice in anything but pumpkin pie person, but I LOVE pumpkin pie. I also think it’s the breakfast food of champions.

My reading habits tend to be pretty chopped mostly because I have small kids and it’s rare to get a chunk of time. It does impact my comprehension and enjoyment some I find, but it’s better than waiting for the elusive and probation-existent long reading stretch and then just never reading. Not letting perfect be enemy of the good etc.

  10. I’m SO GLAD the antennae worked for you! And like you, I would not want it where yours currently is.

I love that you love pumpkin spice season! And yeah, in Earl Grey tea it would be gross.
