walkers walk… but runners fly

Tuesday Topics- The Blogging Community

Hey guys! I’m excited to join Jenn in hosting Tuesday Topics! Today is a free topic, and I figured it would be a good time to talk about what I love about our blogging community. I only have to mention an issue I’m having, and my comment section is full of advice. Here are three recent scenarios where commenters really made a difference in my life:

A couple weeks ago, I talked about my low back pain. This is an issue that comes and goes for me. Sometimes it’s merely annoying and sometimes it’s REALLY painful. Last spring I suffered with an aching low back for months, and finally found relief from chiropractic adjustments.

The thing is… my insurance doesn’t cover it, and it’s also just kind of a pain to make the time to get to the chiro (and it usually takes several treatments to do the job). Wendy recommended that I try a Yoga With Adriene video.

Well! It really, really helped! Sometimes I still feel a little pain, but it’s absolutely manageable, and I can tell that yoga needs to be a regular part of my life. I now have a tool to fix this problem, thanks to a blogger comment.

Last week, I mentioned that I just can’t find the motivation to do upper body strength. In my comment section, Birchie had a great suggestion- pick ONE move and do it regularly.

This is brilliant because, as they say, the best workout is the one you’ll actually do. I’ve picked overhead press with dumbbells as my move. It’s perfect because, unlike bench press or rows where I need to go to the gym, I can make this “heavy” just using the dumbbells I have at home. Eventually the hope is that I’ll expand on this, but just doing this is so much better than nothing. It’s a compound lift that works multiple muscles, and… I’m actually doing it.

On a non-fitness related front, you’ll remember my cat Muffin was sick a couple weeks ago. She stopped eating and we were SO worried about her. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong, but as the days went by we were starting to panic- it’s dangerous for cats to go too long without eating.

I got LOTS of great advice in my comments (in addition to ideas from my sister, who was frantically googling solutions for me). I ended up combining a couple different ideas. I got some chicken broth, but Muffin still wouldn’t eat it. Then I tried dipping my finger in the broth and letting her lick it off. She did do that, and it seemed like that was the turning point. We moved on from there to me dipping my finger into chicken baby food and letting her lick that off, and the next day she started eating the baby food on her own. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO COMMENTED on my sick cat posts!

I’m better now!

Have you gotten any great life advice lately?

Why Am I Doing This?

Hey there! I haven’t had a Deep Thoughts post in a while, and I know how much everyone has been

  1. So glad Muffin is doing better!
I have only ignored advice I’d been given lately, and I had to tell the person that she was right and I should have listened to her. My daughter told me to go to urgent care after I had my recent fall, and I didn’t, and now I will have a very interesting scar instead of a discrete one because I didn’t get stitches/staples. (Luckily it’s mostly hidden by my hair.) In my defense, I didn’t realize it was a big cut until many hours after it happened ( hidden by hair).

I’m glad you were wise to take good advice when given!

    1. Well- if it makes you feel any better, I probably wouldn’t have gone to urgent care either. I always think I can take care of everything by myself. But- this must have been quite a fall! I’m glad you’re okay (other than the “interesting” scar).

  2. Congrats on joining Jenn as a host for Tuesday Topics! Somehow I totally missed that Zenaida stepped down, excited to see the Jenn + Jenny team in action!

I love how you highlighted the power of our blogging community. I think the last person who gave me advice was actually YOU – about my cranky hamstring! I always find the comment section to be the absolute best part of a blog – so many gems of advice tucked in there.

  3. I agree with you about the great blogging community we have here. I have been blogging for 12 years! Through that time, I’ve made some really good friends and met many of them IRL. The best part about that is there is no awkwardness–it feels as if we’ve been friends for years, which we have!

Excited for you to be hosting this linkup with Jenn!

    1. Thanks Wendy! I always find it interesting when I meet bloggers IRL- part of me feels like I’m meeting a celebrity. It’s fun to see screen people come to life!

  4. Love these examples! I get great advice from bloggers all the time. Most recently, I was frustrated with the messy state of my kid’s room. A bunch of people suggested I have my daughter start doing her own laundry and I cannot tell you what a relief that has been!

  5. You’re welcome. She asked me to co-host and I said you’d be better!!
Jenn and Jenny – both live on Florida. A match made in heaven.

I’ve been blogging since the day I started running. I think about quitting because it does take up time but as you said, if you need advice and encouragement, other bloggers rally.

    1. Do not quit blogging!!!! We would miss you. And- I’m not sure if I’ll be a “better” host, but it sounds like you’re not looking to expand your blogging duties.

  6. Good to see you co-host this link-up! I never join because most of it is running-related and haven’t known there are weeks with a free topic. I might join next time it’s a free topic! I thought of joining today but my post got SOO long. Anyway, great to see you as a host!
Overhead press is a great exercise if you have to choose one. And you don’t need a lot of weight to make it hard and heavy either.

I totally agree about the blogging community, and this one in the fitness sphere is fantastic. So much support and encouragement!

    1. Suzanne- please join the linkup as often as you want! The last Tuesday of the month is always a free topic, but you can write on whatever topic you want- the topics are just there as a loose guide.

  7. glad to hear your cats are getting better. our fighting situation just got worse over the weekend, blood included. sigh… we have to “permanently” separate them.
I love bloggers community, it’s finding people with “weird” interests in common and who cares about each other even though we haven’t officially met.

    1. Oh no, really??? Well- your place is pretty big. Does it work okay to separate the cats? Why can’t they just get along???
Yes to the weird! My IRL friends and acquaintances don’t even know I have a blog. And they would be bored stiff if I tried to talk on and on about books, cats and running.

  8. I haven’t blogged in about 5 years and I do miss it, but I know it took up a lot of time and I don’t know if I want to commit to that right now, but the community aspect is so nice!

I got some great advice from a fellow runner during my ultra last weekend. I told him about my DNF at my 100K because of extremely sore feet and how I need to figure that out for my 125 miler in May, and he says at a certain point, the foot soreness doesn’t get any better or worse, you just gotta push through it. So I’m hoping that can help me go further!

    1. I get why you don’t want to put the time into a blog- BUT I’m also kind of mad that you aren’t doing it. You have such interesting things to talk about! Every time you run a race I’m thinking “darn, I wish I could read a race recap!” Anyway…
Have you listened to Sally McRae’s podcast episodes about her foot issues? She had some epic problems and still finished Cocodona. I’ve heard that too- foot soreness isn’t something you “fix” but instead learn to live with. Ugh. That sounds depressing.

      1. I haven’t listened to that episode yet but I need to now!

I did start a blog earlier this year and posted a few times but then it kinda fell by the wayside but maybe I need to bring it back just to have a place for race recaps…

  9. Yay blogging community! We all start with an audience of zero, and it grows from there. I love it when the comment section takes off and becomes better than the original post. Lots of good stuff out here!

  10. Yay for blogging! And congrats on being a host!

It’s crazy to think that five years ago I had NO BLOGGING friends, and now I spend so much time engaging in incredibly meaningful ways with bloggers. It blows my mind.

I am forever grateful I found my way into this particular blogging niche. I get so much great advice and it’s also wonderful to share the joys of life together, too.

  11. I love this about blogging. Also, that I sometimes get good advice from reading other people’s blogs, and their comment sections.

Daily yoga has made such a big difference for my back pain. As in, ‘what back pain?’ Occasionally I will have a twinge, but mostly it is well managed now, which I LOVE. Now if I could get this stupid plantar fasciitis to go away…
