walkers walk… but runners fly

Wednesday Weirdness

Oh hi there! Let’s get the weirdness started with a book I just finished:

This was a unique spin on a classic murder mystery. It was recommended by Meredith on Currently Reading podcast, and she compared it to Anthony Horowitz’s mysteries. The unusual thing about this book is that the author regularly breaks the fourth wall, addressing the reader directly, talking about classic murder tropes and the history of the genre.

I liked it! It was a good mystery with lots of promise, and I liked the asides from the author… UNTIL THE END. This was the third time in one month where I had to google “What happened at the end of…” What is going on? Are super confusing endings a new fad???

Anyway… the ending made a lot of people angry. I had to think about it for a little, but I decided I liked it. It was definitely not what I expected, and that’s something… right?

Moving along. Muffin seems to have recovered completely from her illness, although she still can’t meow (that’s kind of weird, right?) As a matter of fact, she’s recovered so much that she seems to think she’s owed a week’s worth of meals that she missed, and is begging for food constantly. Actually, we were kind of hoping this would set off a weight loss journey for her. Now- we never, ever fat shame the cats, but let’s just say Muffin could live off the fat of the land for quite a while.

Ahem

She’s perfect exactly the way she is, but for health reasons it would be good if she lost just a little weight.

Let’s talk about my daughter, Angie. I have a new nickname for her- she and her friends are very amused that in a show they watch, there’s a character named “Angie Fierce.” That is SO FUNNY, and well, it’s perfect. I mean, if the character were named “Angie Sweet” well… let’s just say it wouldn’t fit at all.

Anyway, Angie Fierce has grown out her bleach and color-damaged hair, and is ready to start all over again with hot pink.

Sigh!

She’s lived with plain old brown long enough, I guess. Not sure if the hair will be dyed before or after Homecoming, which is this weekend. Updates to come!

Anything weird going on with you lately?

Why Am I Doing This?

Hey there! I haven’t had a Deep Thoughts post in a while, and I know how much everyone has been

  1. I am here for Weird Things Wednesday. Good luck to Ms Muffin as she embarks on her “what if there were more of me to love?” campaign. Doggo is doing a ton better, but with dogs it’s critical to keep them on a bland diet until they’re 100% recovered from tummy trouble,

I like the pink! It’s a great color for Angie Fierce!

    1. What if there were more of me to love… hee hee! So you’re saying we should just embrace it. Okay!
Glad Doggo is better… hope she is 100% soon!

  2. I love that your daughter is fiercely herself! What a great color – I wish I were brave enough to try something fun and fierce like that.

So glad Muffin is doing better! And look at that beautiful soft tummy!!!

I downloaded that book before I finished reading your post.

      1. So I *just* started listening to the book yesterday but the “author addressing the reader” thing is so off putting! I wonder if it’s better read with my eyes.

  3. That pink is bright! I think it will look great. I went through a phase where I wanted to be a cool person with colored hair but I hate drawing attention to myself and so I dyed only the underside of my hair…green. I know. I am glad I tried it but don’t think I will ever be a cool person with colored hair. I am glad your daughter has the spunk and bravery to go all in; good for her.

I am not sure that I would like that book as I kind of want the ending to be clear, BUT I don’t mind a little bit of intrigue or a plot twist; I just don’t want to be confused (mystified = yes, lost = no).

    1. At her age I would have hated to draw attention to myself… now I care less and less, but just wouldn’t go to all the trouble of dying my hair. I guess I’ve reached the “I don’t really care” phase of life.
Yeah, the ending… I was definitely mystified AND lost, then I read some reviews and was able to clarify what I thought happened.

    1. Nicole, this is DEFINITELY not a book for you… I would say it’s barely for people who love mysteries, and you don’t even fall into that category.

  4. Pink hair is fun! I have never been brave enough to color my hair anything wild but I always admire people who do. My manager at work, who’s in her 60s, had her hair dyed purple for a long time, up until just a few months ago!

Glad Muffin is doing better! It’s funny how pets can go from being under the weather to right back to their old selves and demanding food.

    1. Ha! Maybe when I enter my 60s I’ll color my hair purple. It would be… a leap for me, and my friends and family would think I lost my mind. We’ll see!
Yes- food is a great motivator. Muffin, Foxy and Charlotte might hiss at each other, but when it’s time to eat they all come together at the food bowls. And, yes Muffin is right back to her large appetite. That didn’t take long!

  5. A friend just had her hair dyed with highlights of bright pink and it looks soooo nice. (Her mother consistently dyes her hair purple.) Not for me, but I can appreciate the aesthetic!
Yay for Muffin feeling better!!! What a relief.

    1. Yes! Muffin is good= life is good. And- I’m hoping my daughter will just go with highlights this time. i think that would look good!

  6. My daughter did some of that bright hair stuff when she was in middle school. Blue and bright pink, it looked great. But UGH, the damage it did to her hair, the bleaching and stripping it of color first. It took years to grow that out. BUT IT DID GROW OUT, and it was her hair, and I think it’s best to say yes whenever you can to kids. There are so many things we’re NOT going to let them do, they need a win.

I’m glad Muffin is feeling better.

    1. Yes, I agree. Weird hair doesn’t really matter. The reason she took a couple years to grow out her hair is that she did have a lot of damage- it’s the bleach that’s so bad. But it’s her hair, and as you said, it does grow out.

  7. The new nickname made me chuckle. It reminds me of a woman who drove Ed home from Irish dancing when he was in 1st grade. I thanked her and she said IT’S FINE, HE’S SO MATURE. That was not a fitting way to describe him, IMO. Lad and I called him mature for fun for weeks and it would always reduce us to giggles. I’m glad Muffin is feeling better. It is so weird that she still can’t meow.

My weirdness is that I haven’t done laundry in days and I just went into the laundry room and there’s a smallish pile. There are only 3 kids living here so it makes sense, but it feels weird.

  8. Oh, Muffin! I also have a cat who is a bit, shall we say, FLUFFY and every vet visit, they try to give me options to help her lose weight but none of it works, lol.

I would love to do pink hair at some point! One of my friends was dying her ends pink for a while, but she eventually stopped. It’ll look great on your daughter, I’m sure!

  9. I’m a big fan of weird things, but not confusing endings in books. I need closure. I need to know what, why, where, when!
    Muffin is adorable!
Oh, wow, on the hot pink hair — that will be fun, for sure. I’ve not heard of Angie Fierce, but I recall Beyonce’s nickname back in the day was Sasha Fierce.
    Or, did I dream that?

  10. I’d love pink hair – I’m waiting to go a bit greyer so I can get colour to show up in my hair, as it’s really dark still. I did have stripes bleached into it and dyed orange for the Birmingham Marathon a few years ago, as orange and black are our club colours!
