walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- Hamstring Reset

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by the Weekly Rundown, hosted as always by Kim and Deborah. I ended last week with a very cranky hamstring- this is an issue I know VERY well, and I was pretty sure it just needed a short break from running. There were plenty other activities, and also some much-needed naps in this busy week. Let’s get into it!

Monday

I started the day with Caroline Girvan’s deadbug workout and then headed to the gym for leg day. The good thing about having a recurring hamstring issue is that I know exactly what I need to do. Things that hurt it include: stretching, and any strength work where the hamstring is elongated, like lunges or split squats. Things that help- back squats and all of my hip stability exercises.

Tuesday

I slept HORRIBLY! Luckily, there was no school because of Rosh Hashanah, so when my alarm went off I got up, fed the cats, and then went back to bed for two hours.

After work I went to the gym for 45 long minutes on the Stairmaster (which also helps my hamstring). I failed to get a photo, but that’s okay- Stairmaster photos are boring. Here’s a picture of Foxy instead:

Wednesday

I started the day with the CG deadbug workout again, and a little bit of upper body strength. After work I got in a 3 mile walk.

Thursday

Back to the gym for leg day #2! I’m really working hard on my squats so my daughter doesn’t get TOO much stronger than me.

At night it was our homecoming game! It rained in the afternoon, so I knew the field would be too wet for the band. But, the evening was clear and our team won 53-0.

The band getting ready to play their halftime show on the track.

Fun night- but I got to bed way too late.

Friday

Finally- let’s try running! I did 3 miles and the hamstring felt good. See, I knew it just needed a little rest.

At night- homecoming dance! My daughter went with a group of friends…

She’s the one on the left- weird to see her with brown hair! It will be pink soon…

… and it was another late night for me, as the kids came over to our house afterwards. I’m feeling very melancholy because I realized… I only have one homecoming left. Nooooooo…..

Saturday

Okay, seriously- I need sleep. I slept in as much as I could before work, and then took a nap afterwards. But I had to do SOMETHING today, so I fit in a short upper body strength workout before dinner.

Sunday

On tap for today- 5 mile run (long run has been moved to Wednesday). And then- we’re going to a Marlins game! They’re playing the Mets and our friends are huge Mets fans. They invited us to go with them to the game- the question is, will they play or will it be rained out? Fingers crossed!

In other news…starting Tuesday, I’ll be joining Jenn in hosting Tuesday Topics! This Tuesday is a free topic, so write about anything you like! I’ll probably be rambling about cats, books, football, pumpkins… you know, the usual. Join us for a fun linkup!

Why Am I Doing This?

Hey there! I haven’t had a Deep Thoughts post in a while, and I know how much everyone has been

  1. It seems that we are both dealing with recurrent issues, you hamstring, me my knee. I took 2 days off to give it a break. will try LR today, but keep it on the shorter side just to be cautious. I also didn’t do much strength this week as I will out of town for two days and crazy work. but will resume it next week.
please talk about your cats! how do you feed them?

    1. Oh, the cat feeding is a little complicated! I’ll talk about it in an upcoming post.
Good luck with the knee- I ran 5 miles today and my hamstring felt good, so I’m hopeful!

    1. Ugh, the Mets lost. But it was fun going to a game anyway.
I can tell you right now, three cats is more work but it’s worth it!

    1. Thanks Coco! And, those are my favorite black cat pajama pants. The game was fun- I haven’t been to a baseball game in a long time.

  2. I hope your run went well today and you can get your long run in this week! Sometimes rest (or switching to other activities) really is best!

I will now be taking the week off running after finishing my 50K yesterday (it was actually almost 33 miles because of course it had to run long)! The day started out beautiful but I was about halfway through when the storms started — I got hailed on and there was a lot of lightning and honestly I was kinda scared for a bit there. It cleared up after a couple of miles and the rest of the day it was dry and the sun came back out. But then there was some mud to contend with and a really technical descent a few miles from the finish so I was ready to be done! I’m really glad I finished though even though it took a couple hours longer than I thought it would, but it was a pretty tough course.

    1. Thanks Kim! I feel like I’ve thought about this hamstring more than any of my other body parts combined. It’s definitely my weak link. But right now it feels good.

  3. As soon as I saw the title of this post and I’ll link up, I know it was your post. I’m sorry you’re having recurring issues. As you know I’m also having some recurring hip issues, but I did go for a 1 mi run this morning and it felt okay! Maybe not seriously running for 4 weeks is finally helping? I don’t want to jinx it though. Nice job with all the dead bug workouts and as always you’re lifting at the gym.

    1. Yes, I saw that you ran a little this week! Ugh, hips and hamstring are SO complicated. It sounds like everything you’ve done is sure to help your hip (laying off running but doing tons of strength and walking.) I hope it’s better and you can do more running this week!

  4. I’m so glad you have the hamstring thing figured out! Last week, my left SI joint started talking to me, and I knew it was because my left glute wasn’t firing (lazy ass syndrome). So I’m back to work with banded side steps, clamshells, and bicycles. I don’t know if we should be proud of ourselves or not…

I know that momma melancholy feeling well! Enjoy every moment with your daughter!

Yay for the Tuesday link up! I’ve got my book reviews loaded up and ready to roll!

    1. Yay! I’m excited for your book reviews.
What is the deal with out lazy asses??? I’m pretty sure my hamstring issue stems from muscle imbalances. I feel like I’m constantly doing prehab and rehab, sigh.

  5. Wait. The field can handle young men whaling on one another, but not the marching band glide stepping? I do not understand priorities.

I love that we got a Foxy sighting. What an adorable baby. I want to squeeze him.

    1. Hee hee- he is such a cutie! And, I think it’s more for the band’s sake than the sake of the field. I guess they don’t want muddy shoes and uniforms and people slipping around with their instruments?

  6. I love how you’re already decked out in Halloween jammies and socks!

I have added dead bug back into my workout routine after not doing them for a few years. Thanks for the reminder!

Looking forward to having you co-host the Tuesday Topics linkup with Jenn!

  7. Aww, I know what you mean- 1 Homecoming left! E has never been really “into” Homecoming so I don’t feel a huge sense of pre-nostalgia on this one really, but it’s still weird to think about. I’m already feeling like, ahhh soccer season is over half around already and then he’ll only have 1 season left to play next year! Assuming he doesn’t end up playing in college, this is IT?! After all these years of watching little kids run around on the soccer field, we will have reached the end point?! It’s crazy.

  8. 53-0! Wow. There should have been zero tension in the stands about it being a nail-biter at the end.

Loved that picture of Foxy all nestled in with you looking cozy and festive <3

  9. Awww, field too wet for the band to play on it? Bummer. Did they have a routine which needed to be switched to a standing performance instead? We are going to a high school game next week to see the band and cheer on the team. The field at our high school gets flooded at least once a year when the rain is heavy. Sadly it’s been very dry so no flooded field yet this year! Glad you are taking care of the hammy and it’s responding well. I hope that continues!
Was your daughter’s brown hair just for homecoming and pink is the norm? I saw on FB that girls in our area get together for makeup (which is typical) but they are all dressed in matching lounge sets like it’s a pre-wedding makeup & hair session. And they are holding flower bouquets for pictures instead of wrist corsages. That’s the latest trends here!

  10. Love your daughter’s look! Hope she had fun!

We were away on Friday and we got our butts handed to us. Our starting quarterback broke his wrist, so who knows how the season will go. Sad because it’s his senior year and it’s the first year he actually got to start (despite being world’s better than the QB who had the job before him).

    Can’t wait for tomorrow!

  11. Halloween pjs! Kitty! Love your daughter’s dress and tights, and the others.
53-0. Oof. Sounds like a baseball game my mom was mad about a while ago. Her team bounced back, fortunately.
