walkers walk… but runners fly

Weekly Rundown- In the Groove

When we left off last week, the Caroline Girvan Iron Series was absolutely kicking my ass- but this week I’ve settled into it. The workouts are still making me sore, but in a reasonable, not debilitating, way. Sprinkle in some runs and some yoga, and it was a good week! Thanks as always to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly Rundown… here we go!

Sunday

Last week I switched around some of the Iron Series workouts, so today I had to go back and do Day #3, glutes. Oof!

Monday

In the morning I got out for a 3.5 mile run.

Later on I did Adriene’s yoga for low back pain.

Tuesday

In the morning I did Adriene’s yoga for hip mobility, and later in the day I did Iron Series Day #4, which was a full body workout- this was intense!

Wednesday

In the morning I went to the gym, where I ran 3 miles on the treadmill and finished with some abs. I really outdid myself with the photo this time…

Later on I did Adriene’s yoga for psoas. This was excellent- I need to do this one more often.

Thursday

In the morning I did yoga for low back pain. Now that I’m doing more strength training, my low back is acting up. I really need the yoga!

Later in the day I did Iron Series Day #6- quads. Ouch. But I’m happy to say that that I’m all caught up and can continue the series in the correct order from now on.

Friday

In the morning- yoga for low back pain again. Later I did Iron Series #7, shoulders and triceps. Boy, are my triceps weak. And then…

PROM! My daughter and her boyfriend went to prom! They left early to go take photos with some friends, but I insisted on getting some pictures in our yard first.

Faces blurred at my daughter’s insistence… sigh.

Later, I was their chauffeur to and from an after party. Luckily (for me) the party got shut down at 1:30. They had fun- but not TOO MUCH fun if you know what I mean- and it could have been a much later night. I was lucky.

Saturday

Oof. Not surprisingly, I was tired but I had to go to work. After work, and a hefty nap, I got out for a 4 mile run.

I’m starting to miss running longer distances! I listened to the latest episode of Sally McRae’s podcast and remembered how much fun it is to be training for a race. Hmmm….

Sunday

On tap for today- Iron Series Day #8. I’m on a roll!

Are you training for a race right now?

If you went to your prom, was your color scheme black and purple? (Ha- probably not!)

  1. I know what you mean about missing longer runs! For so long I was doing a long run every sunday. Now I’m just walking and testing out my hip with shorter runs. I really hope that I’ll get a diagnosis and it’s not so bad and I’ll be back at it soon. I have learned out the faces, but I love the dress your daughter’s wearing! And her hair. OMG I would have loved that hair when I was her age!

    1. Yes, I would have loved that hair as well. She complains about it though! She wants straight hair, SIGH.
I have my fingers crossed on your hip diagnosis- hopefully something they can identify and fix quickly!

  2. I know I need to train for something to have excuse for long runs, anything double digits! My next race is half marathon in end of august so I can keep structure training, and maybe in June switch to marathon training for NYC.
I never went to prom, It is not a thing in Argentina, but my daughters probably will. I am guessing turquoise blue for Sofia.

    1. Yes, I need a race so I can start doing longer runs again! And, I can picture Sofia in turquoise. I think it’s a beautiful color that looks good on just about anyone.

  3. Oh, she looks lovely! The color scheme looks great- the purple hair c suits her! And he date dressed in black too- a perfect pair! I wore pale pink to my prom- very traditional and boring. I used the dress for Halloween a few years later- at least I got my moneus worth out of it.
I’m trying to walk more- not training for anything, but I know I’ll feel better if I stop being a lump. Good luck getting into a good rhythm for exercise!

    1. Yes, luckily her boyfriend also likes black. The purple flowers were his idea.
Elisabeth’s walking club is probably inspiring you!

  4. I didn’t go to prom, but I LOVE the purple and black!!!!!

My husband wore a black suit and black shirt at our wedding with a white tie and I loved it!

  5. It sounds like your recovery is going well! Yay for the yoga!

Your daughter’s hair and dress are beautiful! And yes, I did go to prom with my boyfriend in high school. It was at a place in Rockford called the ‘Wagon Wheel’ resort, and we had to take school buses and spend the night. I hated it. I don’t know why we did it again the second time. It wasn’t all that much fun, and I’m not an all-nighter kind of person. The picnic the next day was my favorite part!

    1. I’m laughing because “Wagon Wheel” doesn’t sound like a very luxurious place for prom. Also, you HAD to go on a school bus and spend the night??? Seems like a weird setup. I guess they were trying to cut down on DUIs and other shenanigans.

  6. I did go to the prom. No color scheme back then.

Your daughter’s hair? Are you jealous?

Anyway you need to pick a race.

I’m always running. Not necessarily training. Two 10 milers in a few weeks.

My lower back is sore today. Boo.

    1. I wouldn’t dye my hair dark purple, but I AM very jealous of her thick, curly hair. Guess what- she doesn’t like it. She wants straight hair, but every time she tries to straighten it, it doesn’t work for some reason or other. So then she complains.
Try yoga!!! Yoga with Adriene for low back pain. You never know, it could help.

  7. Angie looks great! I am glad she had a good time and that you didn’t have to pick her up TOO late! I would be tired, too, if I was you!! One year I wore a black dress and the other year I wore a red one! I loved prom so much, especially my junior year. Senior year was less great as I had broken up with my boyfriend earlier that year and was still not over it so I had a hard time seeing him at prom with his new girlfriend. Oh teen drama!

I am glad you are adjusting to the CG workouts and can do them in order now! I am planning to do #16 shortly before we head to another birthday party this am!

    1. Aw, I’m feeling sorry for senior year Lisa! Yes, that teen drama is hard. Interesting that you did not go “pastel prom” either year!

  8. The prom pic is beautiful! I love the purple, and black is always so classy & chic. Although I don’t have another big race until the end of May (which really isn’t that far off…yikes), I’m not craving long runs, LOL. I love the long-distance races, but the training not so much.

    1. I like long runs, but not in the summer heat. That’s the main thing that’s making me hesitate to sign up for a fall race… we’ll see.

  9. Your kiddo’s dress is gorgeous. And now I’m seeing that the ultimate style tool is to match your flowers to your hair. I know you’re looking for fashion ideas for the wedding…

Congrats on a solid week of Iron! It’s no joke.

    1. Ha ha. I’m pretty sure I can’t pull off dyed hair for the wedding, or at any time. And this is why my daughter thinks I’m boring….

  10. I love your daughter’s hair! I wish I were brave enough to do a fun color like that but I’m sure it would be hard to get that color out of my hair if I wanted to change it.

I always look forward to having some time off long runs after a race, at least like a month or so. I just started tapering for my big race which is just over 2 weeks out now (eek!) and the next race I’m signed up for after that isn’t until the end of September so I can take the rest of May and some of June to just run for fun before kicking off training for that!

    1. Ashley, if you have dark hair then you would have to bleach your hair first. The color my daughter uses is semi-permanent, which means it washes out eventually. But then she’s still left with bleached hair, so she puts another color on it… probably not something you want to get into.
In Sally’s episode she talks about doing a training camp for Cocodona. Enjoy your taper!

  11. Nice job sticking to your plan and enjoying the non-training cycle grove, but I hear you on missing your long training runs.

No boomers didn’t have black and purple for their prom color schemes. LOL Your daughter and her date look fantastic in their matching color combo.

    1. Well, I’m Gen X (just barely) and as far as I know, we didn’t wear black and purple to prom either. But of course I didn’t go to prom so I don’t know for sure!

  12. Cute room picks. When I went junior year- it was a few hours before the dance so I wore my older sisters’ dress. Pink gunnie sac. Spelling? Sax? Not sure how he managed a pink tie but he did.

I’m doing a Caroline Girvan series rn. I can’t remember which one. I’ll have to check tomorrow. I think tomorrow is my last one in this series. I sometimes do them out of order too. I always skip the push up classes- I can do push ups but an entire class? Bugs my wrists.

    1. Ernie, I CANNOT DO pushups either- they absolutely kill my wrists. There were some pushups in one of the earlier workouts in this series, and I did them with my hands on a dumbbell instead of flat on the floor (does that make sense???) It wasn’t ideal, and I would never do an entire pushup class.
Wait- you only decided a few hours before prom that you were going? I need more of a story on this.

  13. The black and purple looks great!! I love the coordinating items. One year my dress was actually black and white! Looking back this is not a surprise for me because I still love black and grey for daily wear. The funny thing was that the prom queen wore the same dress that I did. It was like showing up and a super model had the same outfit. I looked OK in it, but not “prom queen” good! haha
That’s cool you were the chaperone. I’m glad they were safe!!
Yay on advancing to “normal soreness” in your workouts too!

  14. I love your daughter’s date and the purple hair with coordinating flowers! I don’t know if she is goth at all, but it’s giving me goth vibes in ALL THE BEST WAYS.

I forgot about that psoas yoga, I should do that one again, it was great.

I wore a tuxedo to my prom. I felt VERY cool. Want to see a picture? https://jellyjules.com/what-about-prom/
My date was 6’3”, so him sitting was a good idea.

    1. I meant to say I love your daughter’s *DRESS*, but wrote date because I was thinking about the flowers. Nice job date!

  15. Your daughter’s prom dress is so cool – like something from Beetlejuice! I like the colour combination black/purple.
Good work mixing the strength training and running this week, and I’m glad you’re going into the “normal soreness” phase.
I’m going to check out some of Adrienne’s yoga moves for the lower back and hips this week. I’m 100% determined to solve the problem I have with my right glute/whatever it is. I noticed recently that my left hip is much stiffer than the right, so loosening up the hips could certainly help, along with some piriformis exercises.

  16. Oh… your daughter looks gorgeous! I love the black and purple! I just love fancy dresses in general and I always love seeing the prom and homecoming pictures.

I’m laughing at you missing the longer distances. You’ll be back to another ultra soon!
Great week, and I love that you are prioritizing strength and yoga and stretching for optimal results!
